      I work in house as well and it's far less stressful than working private and less billable hours 😃 and pretty much come in whenever I want. I'm so jelly about the copius snacks y'all get we don't even get coffee but can't have it all I suppose.

    why do companies nowadays use open floor office settings? I am a true introvert, highly sensitive to sounds/smells/motion/light; I feel horrible working in such spaces. Give me my 'old-fashioned' cubicle and I'll work harder and feel better at the end of the day as well.

Go to the gym @130-3p, pick up food after then eat. Take a nap for an hr then get ready for work. Weekends are very different, since I work Sunday through Thursday night, Fridays I usually take a long drive and come back home Sunday around lunch time. This weekend I’m staying in Palm Springs California for 2 days.

    in our country our day of work starts at 7:45 - 12:30 pm then 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm. but this only applies on the government, while the private sector usually starts at about 7:30 am if im not mistaken and ends at 5 pm. its amazing for you sharing this video! btw, are you like a ‘Legal Advisor’ in a company?

    I am an undergrad and thinking about law school after graduation. I have been searching and prospects for lawyers do not look so good. You being in the field, do you think that the demand is good? is a law degree valuable?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      it depends what kind of lawyer you want to become. honestly, it's not that huge of a demand and the competition is pretty high but it also depends where you want to practice (California and New York are harder to get jobs). I've heard a lot of people have trouble finding jobs after graduation.

      Do not borrow 150K to go to a TTT (look it up if you don't know what it is) DO NOT go if you can't get in at least top 50. If you really want to go, try applying again the second year, maybe with a better LSAT. No amount of free snack is worth borrowing for a degree that doesn't pay and the only way to get paid in law is to work at a decent firm. After a few years at a firm you can probably get an in-house job that pays about half of first year firm salary.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      mm I see what you mean, but at what cost? law firm life is definitely not good for work/life balance. I would rather make less but not work crazy hours.

    • @BrittanyTran

      you can study anything you want, most people do political science or psychology, communication etc. but it doesn't matter because then you go to law school to study the law.

    thanks for sharing but I felt like you didn't differentiate it at all from any other person who lives in New York. I was expecting to see specifically what a lawyer's work is like in NY, and I understand that you obviously can't share confidential information, but there was no information at all except that you sometimes have a quiet booth for phone calls. Just some constructive criticism

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      yeah, the purpose of the video wasn't really to get into the legal profession more so than just showing what a typical work day is like for me (and I happen to be a lawyer that works in New York). Hi, I don't usually leave comments on anything but I have to thank you for this video. Four years ago I clicked on this exact video and, for reasons I do not entirely understand, I suddenly became interested in this career when, up until this point, I was floundering around without any interest in a single profession. It was probably the schedule and amenities more than anything, but this kickstarted my research into becoming a lawyer. I had previously assumed this profession had a hellish work-life balance and, although sometimes it can, I'm happy to report that this was the right decision. I applied and got into law school two years later, and I will be finishing my second year this spring. I was so frightened that I would never find an area of work that I resonated with, but I finally found it. I know you might not have been expecting this sort of response from a day-in-the-life vlog, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

    I’m a startup lawyer also. First worked on east coast, now Midwest in-house then firm. It is definitely a different experience and can be innovative in how you structure your work day. It is not always glamorous if the company is very early stage with limited resources, or if you are working remotely. It can also be challenging (good or bad) picking work attire as a female, when everyone around is casual. One thing I would say is make sure you get enough Vitamin D and K2 (supplements and grassfed yogurt or milk) since you are inside most of the day and away from windows with sunlight.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it is difficult to pick work attire when there are so many people in jeans and tennis shoes. I am taking vitamin D supplements because of the lack of sun! Are you enjoying life at a firm after being in house? It always seems so crazy to me.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm, I'm planning to do a video about applying/getting into law school. I don't personally think it matters where you go to undergrad or law school as long as you are able to pass the bar exam and make connections. I do think it matters where you go in terms of location (if you want to practice in California, probably better to go to a california school). in addition, if you want to practice in a certain area of California it's probably better to go to school there.

    It’s 9:22am and I’m still at home. Not feeling well so I texted my work’s Whatsapp group saying that I’ll be in late. I’m a researcher in a university.
    I usually reach the office at 7:45am (otherwise it is impossible to get a parking), but technically my hours start from 10am to 6:30pm. I also routinely go for a short 15 mins walk with a colleague after lunch. It’s good for our mental health

    I am currently studying at a law school in the UK so graduating/the education system to become a lawyer is somewhat different. I personally would prefer to be an in house lawyer for a company, I would just like to ask what are your daily tasks? I know it would change day to day but are there certain tasks you repeat daily?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it depends on what your responsibilities are for the company you work for. since it's just me and my boss my day to day differs because it's whatever the company needs assistance on. I would say that 50% of my work is reviewing contracts (both vendor and customers) and then a lot of the other work is dealing with employment issues. So a lot of contract drafting, negotiating and redlining each day.

      Brittany Tran Hello Britanny! Mind if I ask if you plan on engaging in litigation practice in the future? It seems like this in-house lawyer lifestyle is good by I wonder if you did ever consider litigation.
      Im planning on taking the California Bar by the way, so a video about that would be great! On a side note, my girlfriend is taking the NY Bar so that got me thinking if ill just take the NY Bar too. Im inclined to take the CA Bar since i think i will love the weather there compared to NY :p

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi! I do not plan on doing litigation in the future. It's just not for me and I don't enjoy going to court, haha. I prefer transactional law. I will definitely be doing a video on the California bar. I would suggest taking it where you think you'll end up practicing. Both bar exams are difficult, I can't imagine taking more than one bar but if you really want to move to New York to be with your girlfriend go for it! Or you can try to find jobs that dont require state specific bar exams (federal, immigration, in house...).
