Best thing is how light they are . I put larger dogs on mine which are nice on the stump in heavy bark. They do need a suspension kit or they feel like the mounts are all broken. I also put a foam filter on it to give it more air.
Thankyou! I actually have a pretty simple set up. ( The GO PRO Hero 8 ) and a head band. Its all I ever really need ...and if I need a tripod ( for standing and talking videos) I just cut of a sapling at whatever height I want it and set the camera on that. I just bought a Go Pro 9 ...only because they wont sell the 8s anymore...I will be curious to see how it does...sure it will be fine.
Those are great saws I love mine,I put west coast dawgs and suspension kit on mine and a bark box with an Eagan foam air filter, the max flow air filters are great as well if you decide to make any changes changes to it,the stock air filtration system is not good in my opinion but thats really the only drawback i have personally
I'm with you on the west coast dawgs and perhaps a max flow... not sure about the suspension kit...what does that add ? Heard of it...just not sure if its something I should try🤔
@norcaltimberfaller1943 it comes with a stronger spring and stiffer bushings,it just makes it feel a little stiffer vs being floppy as some folks say, alot of people running longer bars seem to feel it makes the saw feel better and a little more stable
Thank you for the great videos. The power to weight is great on 500i for sure, I sure don’t like their fuel and oil caps though, horrible design and always leak. Significantly more expensive than husky, especially after buying the after market parts to make it “usable”, at least in our area. Look forward to more reviews and videos. Stay safe, God bless.
I believe that screw is for the cylinder cover & I think a maxflow is definitely in your future,if it weren’t for maxflow oiled filters I wouldn’t be running Stihls. I sure appreciate your channel and falling skills! The camera doesn’t really show the difficult terrain you have to deal with. The cutting I did in Ca was on S.P.I . Land around Chester, never got to cut on the coast, I got sent to Arcata but was too late.
No air injection on these so that the air flow over the cylinder is maximized. These saws get hot especially with the stock muffler. Nice video Mr. Leeper.
THE HALF TURN ON THE LOCKING CAP FOR THE COVER IS FINE BUT TO RELY ON THAT TO ALSO SECURE THE FILTER WITH AN ADEQUATE SEAL SEEMS LIKE CUTTING CORNERS..
@@norcaltimberfaller1943 SOUNDS LIKE A DECENT POWERSAW ( NOT SURE WHY I SAY POWERSAW -- I NEVER DO --TILL LISTENING TO WEST COAST FELLERS )I'M STILL IN NEANDERTHAL TIMES WITH THE 3 SERIES TIME SOON TO POWER UP TO AT LEAST A 400 SERIES. DAMN SAW WON'T QUIT THOUGH..
Been a long time since I ran a 461...I used to run all Stihls many years ago... this is the first one I have bought in a long time. One of the guys I work with always runs 461 s and loves them
I'm a timber cutter in Australia and I love 461's, we have about 6 of them and 2 500i's, I always pick up a 461 before a 500, wouldn't even look at a 661, there's nothing you can fall with a 66 that you can't with a 46, even the 462's aren't as good
Definitely recommend the Maxflo, if your not going to run that then the ring of grease you do is a good idea and the little washer/grommet on the air filter cover connector double up on those, running 2 helps make a better seal, I found that to be a weak point also.
Well.. the 500 is a strong saw for its size... The 592 has more stumping power... but it's a bigger saw overall.. so it should have massive stumping power( the 592)
585 and 592 are not on a proven chassis, the 500i is, having years of background as a ts500i cutoff saw which is a very rough environment for any internal combustion engine
Crazy how much money them saws are they should have a great air filter system on them… imo ya shouldn’t have to spend more money on a filter system to make sure ya aren’t sucking in stuff 🤷🏼♂️ it’s a nice saw tho
How does it feel compared to the husky smoothness wise/vibration? I tried one and it felt tougher than the 572 for sure but maybe I should try it again. Smoothness is the most important thing for me running saws.
It is a little rougher then the husky... but not bad overall.. I look for the same thing( operator friendly) it has a good feel and balance to it in my opinion...
Yeah I figured smoothness was a big deal for you as well, thanks for the input. I guess the big question is, you converting over or sticking with the husky? I’m surprised Husky hasn’t come out with something to compete yet.
Good question...I think for now I will just keep the 500i as my primary mid range saw, and use the Husky 592 on the bigger stumping projects. That seems to be working well in the stand I am currently in....
I put a Exile Perfornace muffler front and dawgs and a Redbear vstack base and a angled air filter, way more power but it is far loader. I have a 28 and it suits most needs.
@@norcaltimberfaller1943yes I agree with Scott. I’d look into the red beard set up. Max flows still let quite a bit of fines through. They do have good power and great throttle response, but in my personal opinion they are far to expensive and need to many upgrades. Clutch covers on them are pretty much useless too. But the power to weight ratio is the best there is in stock form. So I guess it’s just what a guy likes. Good review man.
I put maxflo and bark box on mine. Two years of heavy burned timber and it runs like a champ. My fav.
Yes ... thinking maxflow is the way to go here... thanks for the comment!
NIce Dan, great saw it wont disapoint, I was a huge husky saw guy, just bought a MS661 Magnum fantastic!
Glad the 661 is working out for you👍
Thanks for sharing. !
Your welcome!

Thanks! Those are good suggestions 👍
Yeah it's impressive. You hand file with square file or square grinder?
I really like Hotsawz101
I use a square grinder
Yet another beautiful video. What camera do you use, and what's your setup? Your audio quality is on the top shelf.

Thanks for the input! Yes the power and weight are great...but as everyone has been pointing out...they sure missed it on some of the simple details.

Yes... I think max flow makes sense... really don't like the stock...anyways.. thanks for the comment, glad you are enjoying the channel.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely be taking all these comments into consideration and seeing if I can improve some of these things on this saw.
Speaking of Mr. Jack i had him build me a 500i it is a beast! It murders with a 36! Throttle response is changed with slight mods.
Yes ... I'm sure it would get with it. Jack is good with the hop ups ..
THE HALF TURN ON THE LOCKING CAP FOR THE COVER IS FINE BUT TO RELY ON THAT TO ALSO SECURE THE FILTER WITH AN ADEQUATE SEAL SEEMS LIKE CUTTING CORNERS..
Yes...I agree...it seems like they could have done a lot better with the air filter system.
@@norcaltimberfaller1943 I JUST INQUIRED TO THE COST FOR MAX FLO...TO BAD YOU HAVE TO SPEND ANOTHER $90-
Yes...it really starts adding up....guess the 500 is going to need to get a lot of timber down to justify its cost...I think its up to the task ...

Have you run a 461? If so how do they compare? The 461 is my go to and I love it, but I see everyone going to either the 500i or 661 nowadays

Mmm yes it has been a while since I ran a 461...I remember them as being good. Might have to compare the two( 500i versus 461)
I knew I saw you with a Stijl in your hands the other day when I was working underneath you
Yes indeed ... you have a good eye!👍

Thanks for the info Jake! Is the Red Beard Set up something one gets at madsens or Baileys? Im not familiar with it....
Thanks for the input Jake! Hope things are going well for you in Oregon these days...
