Depression can strike at any stage of someone's life. I'm helping my 83 yo dad and 82 yo old mom who've been married 62 years. Mom has dementia and dad has neuropathy. He's been my mom's rock and she's been his. Since her mental decline and his physical one, it's heartbreaking to see how helpless he feels. Just the other day I suggested he speak with someone about his fear, sadness etc. I think today when I go over I'll actually try to insist. Thanks for the reminder that help is out there.

I had to pause at 23:00 to tell you that I experienced the exact same thing in 1988. As soon as you started describing your symptoms I said "panic attack"- And as far as knowing an attack is coming on, and "playing with it", you're doing what my shrink told me to do 30 years ago. And that is no easy thing to do. The thought that an attack is imminent feeds on itself and you start to think you can actually cause one to happen. I haven't had a panic attack in 25 years but I can still recall them vividly. Wouldn't wish that shit on my worst enemy. I talk about it freely with my friends, and it never ceases to amaze me how many others struggle in silence with it. Talk about it people. There is no stigma. And thanks to you and the others for showing us your steak. Great vid Doug.

Doug, I loved your video. I loved Finnigan too, he is so good and well behaved. My favorite cousin had ants in his pants too. He wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until High school in Arizona. His life was hell. He couldn't concentrate on anything for longer than a few minutes and he was extremely frustrated. Fortunately for him, he was able to see a good therapist who showed him how to focus his very active and intelligent brain to embrace his creativity. Now he is a very successful graphics designer and works for famous company. His teen years were so difficult for him, puberty plus ADHD made him act out in not so positive ways. There were many times he contemplated suicide and twice he even tried it. Happily he had wonderful support and was able to survive adolescence and get the help he so desperately needed. Now he is married to a beautiful woman and he is blessed with three beautiful girls. He is one of the success stories but there are many men and women who were not given the support that my cousin had . They continue to suffer in silence until they can't stand it any more and are driven to doing harmful things to themselves to stop the pain. Some try drugs some cut themselves and some turn to violence. Whatever it takes to fell better. It is so important to know that there are people out there to help. Many organizations are formed to help men and women who suffer from mental illness but you first have to make the
effort to go and see them.
Doug your words of encouragement and your personal revelation will help many men see there way to get the help they need. It was a very honest and heart felt account of your life. It can show men that it is ok to seek help and that it does NOT mean that you are weak by any stretch of the imagination. Doug , you are a fine example of someone who has conquered his demons and is living a successful life. Good luck to you and all your endeavors. Much respect and love from a sub in Maritime Canada.

I was grocery shopping with my young daughter & literally left my shopping cart full, grabbed my daughter & barely remember driving home. It is a terrible feeling, I still have them & I am 61. Thanks, Doug, for sharing this video. Great to see Finnegan (sp?) out and about with you. That in itself brings up a great point vis-a-vis Men's Mental Health. How's that? Well, the old adage is "Dog is Man's Best Friend," Yes? Well, I certainly believe that to be true. If it weren't, we wouldn't see so many "therapy dogs." All this to say, if Buddy's struggling, finding it hard to find someone to talk to, he can always find comfort in Man's Best Friend: A Dog. I'm not asserting that's a be-all-end-all, a panacea, a stopping point, a final solution, or a substitute for getting professional help. However, I do submit that it's sure is a good starting point, a 'safe harbor' if you will, to keep Buddy from any irreversible, act. Some may scoff at my theory, but I challenge those doubters to explain the "common denominator" in the dynamic duos of Doug & "Finnegan" (#DougOutside); Joe Robinet & "Scout" (#JoeRobinet); Shawn James & "Cali" (#MySelfReliance); Mike Pullen & "Jaxx" (#TAOutdoors); and Dustin James & "Hazel" (#bushcrafttools). #ShowUsYourSteak #ShareABiteOfSteakWithYourBestDogMaybe #MansBestFriend #YouAreNotAlone #JusSayin

Great video Doug as always. Love the sweater! Thanks for sharing the message. It doesn't take much digging within our spirits to bring up special memories of times we had issues that took extra efforts to overcome or to deal with. In my case it was my faith, my family, my friends, and pastors who helped me climb out of difficult situatiin(s). My prayers for all who are a part of this community that if any are facing mental health issues is to first know you're not the only one and that there is assistance out there. And...there is always time in the woods for a steak.

Doug, is it hard to not run across the room? That was a question I got from my father as he was trying to explain why I am the way I am as an adult. I did not answer him but he knew and told me I had better learn to walk.I love building houses for this reason. You get to work hard and you can see what you accomplished at the end of the day. I have to work harder than anybody around me. When I was young I would work myself into a frenzy. It was borderline dangerous for those around me. Tried working for the government once. Woke up on a crab boat in Alaska.

Hi Doug. I can relate to so many things on all the points you and many others cover, it's not funny. I left a better comment on @Shawn James' page as that's one of my main escapes. I really appreciate Haze for starting,(causing trouble in a good way), all this. I do however wish that everybody could not only participate but have that wanton desire to help, listen or try and make a difference. I fully support "Mission 22" since I am a USAF veteran dealing with my own things and have lost sadly many friends and former comrades in arms to this everyday life occurrence. I am having more surgery tomorrow, 14 Nov 18, and am not handling it well mentally. Hence that is why I am on youtube watching folks like yourself to try and come to terms with things. All of you are an inspiration for me to continue on. I too have Salvation and that has made a world of difference. Speaking of, my mental issues are what led me to Christ. I was at my breaking point after being paralyzed and freshly married(3 months) and figured it was the end of the road. We all have Our Stories to tell, no doubt, but from what I see is that most times, no one wants to listen or care. I goto the VA here in Pittsburgh where I live and still dealt with like cattle would be . It truly gets frustrating. There is a bunch more to my story but like you said, maybe one day at a campfire. Again, Thank You and everybody else to help bring awareness to this enigma that plagues so many, including my little brother and almost me. It is a really Big Deal and I hope and Pray this word makes its way to the far reaches of every corner of the world. Please continue what you do and I promise I'll continue to watch all of you. I wish you and all the readers/watchers of your channel well. Till next time~

Doug, I've had this exact same experience, on the highway from Valemount to Blue River B.C.! Thought I was gonna die, and it seemed like time had stopped moving. I had to use my hands to move my legs on the pedals just to get to town and call 911. EMTs diagnosed it as a panic attack, and they said it could have caused a heart attack. I also turned down the medication and made changes to my life instead. I'm not "cured" but I'm in control of it now.

this is the true way that men count and try to pass on to other men words of help, thank you Doug for the messangem as well as all the other guys who are initiating this important messangem without political vies or ideological background really a great respect for this made wave by these channels ... the public SWJ now must know why we often get angry at how they put things.

Great job Doug, best looking steak so far. Most of the comments are from Europe, guess it has to do with the time of day over here. You need to get young GOOBER Joe one of those sweaters to wear in the next video. Thanks for the honesty.

Great video, and I think you are definitely the winner so far for best steak! Love the extra effort to dress for the occasion, I think young master Hayze would approve. Thanks also for the stories and chat on the subject, I've seen youtubers shoot "show us your steak" videos but not talk at all about the cause it is promoting awareness for, which is ironic if you think about it. I hope the burrs and such all came off Finnigan without too much trouble, he sure seemed to enjoy collecting them!

Great video as always, Doug. Thanks for sharing. And man, what a well-behaved pooch you have! Always impressed by how he listens to you. Iike another commenter said, dogs are great for anyone's mental health. I would suggest that anyone willing to accept the responsibility of caring for a dog should get one; your life will be enriched in ways you never imagined.

Sweet Jumper👍 I think that could possibly be part of your attire now.
I had my first anxiety attacks this summer and it freaked me out big time.
I hope these tagged videos do actually reach out and help those who need it. The outdoors are what keeps my bubble in the middle 👍

Thanks so much for sharing this video with us. I am 82 in Jan. atnd I have neuropathy in my back & both legs and spend most of my time in a lift chair. I have had very similar anxiety attacks to yours a little over a year ago. I too felt like I was suffocating and my wife called the EMT's who like your hospital Dr's said I was OK and not dying. Since then I have had many more, but now have so far learned to control it. I too just started wood carving, and I have you to thank for the encouragement to start doing that. We used to do most of the things we see you, Joe, & shaun doing in the outdoors and now for health reasons we can no longer do them. So we go with you fellows by watching your videos. A real blessing to be able to do that. God Bless
    Danny

I've suffered with them for the best part of 20 years. Every night in bed on the cusp of sleep, boom chest pains and panic. It's debilitating and rules my life. Ive tried therapy at multiple levels, umpteen different meds and nothing has helped. I'd love to be carefree and actually sleep. Thanks for sharing your story.

Well done. I worked myself too much a few years back & started feeling the same way. I didn't go full *I'm dying here*, but pretty close. I slowed my life down, and discovered this outdoor/bushcraft community around the same time. Just getting outside, and breathing the fresh air is great for mental health. It's nice to see this community raising awareness.

From one Doug to another - I can't express how much I enjoyed this video and the message behind it. I came here from one of Joe's videos. You both have such good energy. Great people that I could hang around a fire with anytime. I'm a graphic designer by trade and you have also inspired me to try out whittling! Keep up the great work Doug. I'll be tuning in! ~Doug from Maryland PS - LOVE the sweater. Put a big ol smile on my face. :D

What an awesome way to spread the awareness of a very common and serious issue . I have nothing but respect for you Doug . As you have stated and other men as well on TH-cam we need to be able to talk and confide in someone . Be it a friend , family member or professional counselor and get over the culture that men must be mentally tough and deal with it alone . Great steak with great company Finnegan
