      Thanks! As you know, everything else is pretty boring to post about, not to mention shoot!

    While I can’t speak for the 50ae, I was able to complete testing on my 44 mk19. The short piston worked a great deal keeping the brass out of my face. Ejected nicely out the right hand side of the gun. I did get two out of fifty rounds fired that grazed my hair but nothing physically hit me.
    The ammo I’m running is my own handloads using a Hornady XTP 240gr projectile on top of Hodgdons recommended max charge of 24gr of h110. The gun still has a little more gas pressure than I’d like. I may modify the piston to vent a little more gas.

      This is all good info to know, there’s so many different combinations. Thanks for sharing!

    The original .50ae load was a jhp 325 grain 1414fps from a company called sampson. When I bought my first. 50ae that was the only ammo you could get.

    My 50 using MR ammo throws all the brass straight back missing your head by 3" and landing about 15' behind you. When using the Speer or Simmons that would fly to the side. I would have to tell everybody to stand to the left of me. I'll probably order a new gas piston since my DE is from 1995 and their cheep. Great info I'll have to shoot some of the Hornady's that I just got and hope I got the fireball ones!!!

      It’s funny that you have to go through all these gyrations with this gun but hey, as you know, once you shoot 50AE it’s all worth it!

    Aria ballistics engineering makes 350jhp,385hardcast,400 grain solid copper, and407 grain bonded soft point ammo. For desert eagles
    Go bigbore or go home tested some.

    My 50 DE's ejected cases ding my forehead about every fourth round regardless of ammo - even my handloads. I've fired the 350 JSP rounds you show, and they chronograph around 1334 fps, which is fairly stout. And about the same MV from my Magnum Research BFR. I don't see how changing the gas piston would affect ejection trajectory, as I would think the placement of the ejector would determine that. But, what do I know? As far as I know , the 350 grain load from Magnum Research is the heaviest bullet available in DE ammo. For my BFR, though, I have loaded the 385 Remington CK-L JHP and it performs just fine. But I would not shoot those loads in the DE as the bullet is way too long. The factory Speer 300 GDHP clocks 1532 fps from my DE. And the Sampson 300 JSP around 1412 fps.

      Thanks for the inputs, they’re always appreciated as the more the better. Here’s the deal: the pressure in the piston cylinder is WAY too high in the hard hitting rounds, this causes the slide to slam back too fast which in turn causes the ejector to hit at the wrong time, hence the flat trajectory or sometimes right-side-only angle. The shorter piston is reduces the “compression” so to speak thereby slowing the slide. We’re talking fractions of a second but it makes all the difference. Did you watch my video of a few days ago actually firing it? It was a beautiful thing if you’re used to walking out of the range with cylindrical burn marks on your forehead! You can call Magnum Research yourself, make sure you all the tech dept and not their regular line or on-line sales. I can’t guarantee it will work the same as it does for me but it wasn’t even close in my case! Check out my range test of it, I posted it only a few days ago. It’s telling.

      @@991turbogeek Wow. Your explanation makes sense. Dings in the forehead are annoying, but once the case hit with the mouth on my forehead, and left a half-moon cut! Obviously, shooting glasses are an absolute must. I appreciate your very informative reply.

      You handload? I ran into a problem when running the short piston and I'm not sure if it's my handloads or the short piston. I'm running a max charge of 24gr H110 under a 240gr XTP and almost every shot my right cheek is getting peppered with what I think is unburnt powder. It's hitting me at high enough speed that it stings a little. Have you ran into a similar issue?

    • @991turbogeek
      @991turbogeek  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hardlylivin6602 No, I do not hand load. I’ve always thought about it but never got around to it. As for face hits, I’m now pretty sold on the over-charging of the gas port theory. My other guns with the long piston using standard Hornady 300gr all eject, for the most part, in a normal arc. I’m guessing due to the medium gas charge. That’s my guess anyway.

      @@hardlylivin6602 No I have not experienced that. It seems your H-110 is not igniting completely. Could be old powder, or a weak primer. Or, you could try IMR - 4227, A-1680, or 2400. These loads are found in the Lyman #50 manual. Also, your neck tension might not be sufficiently tight enough to ensure good ignition. Maybe your sizer is a bit too large. I hope you solve the issue - no fun getting stung by unburned powder particles!

    Out of curiosity, before I purchase a 44mag conversion kit, will 44 special ammo cycle?

    • @991turbogeek
      @991turbogeek  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I’ve never actually tried it, I would highly doubt it since the shell pressures would be so much less than 44mag. But again, I couldn’t say for sure. So you have the 50AE barrel now and you’re thinking of also going 44mag, and I’m assuming that you have extra 44 special rds laying around?

    • @hardlylivin6602

      @@pistolperrynoya9469 Tried it and no. The chamber pressure just isn't high enough to cycle with specials... at least with the blazer aluminum loads I had on hand. With that said though, the slide did manage to eject most of the rounds but wouldn't go far enough back to pick up the next one. You might be able to handload an extra spicy 44special load that would cycle, but at that point you could just load a few extra grains of powder (or even swap the powder charge entirely) and make it a magnum for practically the same cost.
