Using the same basic technique, there is an easier way to keep the gathered stitches even. You can use either the 3-step zigzag (3 little stitches up & 3 down), or the 3-step pyramid stitch. Sewn on the wrong side of the fabric over 3 strands of light weight but strong threads. You can quickly make as many rows as needed. You reset the stitch to start at the stitch beginning at the start of each row. I find it helps me to draw a starting line on the fabric so the rows are pretty much identical. Then gather as shown in the tutorial. I have beautiful, & quick results with this technique.
Yes, i’m confused too. A hand smocker here . Do you use the heavier thread to pull the gathers? That’s tough to sew over three threads at once, but I’m not sure what you mean.
Very pretty and simplyfied way of smocking for sewers who want to finish the project quickly. It helps to have add interfacing below the gatherings. I used water soluble interfacing for a baby frock that I sewed as a gift, though tissue papers might be Ok for personal use. But the drawback is washing out every bit of tissue. Thank you for putting up this video.😀
Exactly what I was thinking. The first thing that came to mind was how there was no way those stitches were going to come out evenly without putting some sort of stabilizer underneath, especially without a walking foot. I'm impressed that they came out the way they did. It was probably because as she said, she pressed the gathered fabric a Lot, so actually having to wash and dry the garment would be a good thing since it would fluff up the gathering.

Shirring is a technique that gathers fabric making use of several rows of stitching that shrinks the size of the fabric small thereby providing it with elasticity.
Extremely helpful video! Just getting into the smocking of children's clothing and researching the various ways! Thank you for your professionalism and hard work!
But it doesn't stretch. It doesn't behave like smocking - it is not smocking. Lets call it Mock Smocking. It is very pretty and looks wonderful on the very fine, lawn, cotton you are using.

I know this is an old post but I'm confused by what you mean by stitch over 3 strands? I'm excited to try this out! Thank you
Have you done a tutorial on it?!

@@miric6224I think they mean they couch the threads under the zig zag

Hello.
You’ve given some interesting details. I have the 4120. I’ve done hand smocking, love the look. Will try the machine method though. Thanks ❤

Thank you! What a nice discovery, just as I'm getting into sewing for babies and dolls.
It’s very pretty, thank you for showing that method but isn’t smocking supposed to be stretchy?
Shirring is the stretch one, smocking isn’t stretchy
Yes, smocking is supposed to be stretchy. They have been smocking for millennia because it's a way to make fabric elastic.
You can make it stretchy by using elastic thread (instead regular or pearl cotten) under the pyramid stitching.
But it doesn't stretch. It doesn't behave like smocking - it is not smocking.

Love it
So cute, thank so much.
