    In long haul flights I prefer the isle seat because I go to the bathroom many times during the flight. I also like to stand up, do some stretching and even walk a bit.

    Window seat.
    King size pillow (on the flatter side) carried through airport folded in half in a large, handled packing cube.
    Socks with traction grips on bottom so when I pull my feet up into the seat they do not slide back off.
    Noise cancelling headphones
    Eye mask
    Light blanket (also carried in the cube with the pillow, socks & flat hotel slippers for walking around)
    When I want to sleep, I pull myself up into the seat and lean into the window/wall while hugging my long pillow. When awake I can put the pillow back into the cube and set it on the floor as a foot rest to elevate my legs. In addition to allowing for great sleep, these techniques have also completely eliminated my RLS on longer flights :-)

    After spending 20 years working overseas, I finally hit on a great way to get good healthy sleep on an airplane, even in economy...Apply all the tips given here, but add one thing: a shawl....Just drape it over your head and shoulders and you create a small cocoon, all yours. Comfortable eye mask, effective ear plugs, and this little private tent...plenty of air coming up from the bottom....AND once I was stuck on a commuter flight right after a strong storm....when the planes could finally take off again, there were dozens of planes lined up for take-off...It took close to two hours before take-off and it was FREEZING in the plane.It was hot summertime and most people wore shorts...People were huddled together....I almost felt guilty that I had a light wool shawl to wrap around my body,,,,It really comes in handy for an instant sense of privacy on long long flights....like those to Tokyo from Chicago...and again, Tokyo to Bangkok....Shawls make these long hauls less stressful! Try it!

      @@cherylduncan4118 I'm sure I looked strange too...But it gave me some kind of sense of privacy and then I could just relax into sleep...I try to make sure that bathroom stuff is done at the beginning...I always tried for a window seat to rest my head on the travel pillow (not the neck kind) that its my second necessity...and then after dinner, off to sleep...It really helped me...

    Note--the blood clots are not caused by prescription sleeping pills. They are caused from being in the same cramped position for an extended period and not stretching, walking, or doing things as simple as flexing and extending your ankles. All of these things stimulate blood flow in your legs. Yes, sleeping pills do encourage staying in that single position for a prolonged period...but it is the lack of movement rather than the pill that causes the issue. Blood clots are way too common on long haul flights--be sure to stand and stretch as well as doing some "at your seat" exercises while awake!

Something about the change in cabin pressure on takeoff just knocks me right out. On overnight flights where people are all well behaved and quiet, I can sleep through the whole night.

    I lift my legs off the floor by putting a block or backpack under my feet. Elevating my thighs off the seat helps w circulation and comfort. I think you could bring a yoga block on w you and use it as it would fit under seat in front. I also turn off air above my head. Always sit in window seat. Never take a sleep aid. Don't drink booze or coffee either on a plane. Always have a shawl w me as well.

    I can never sleep on planes, but if you can have a flight that lands in the late afternoon/early evening, you actually benefit. In that situation I can go out in the evening, then have a good night's sleep in my hotel bed, and be fully adjusted to the new time zone when I wake up. Those that sleep on the plane will have jet-lag

    • @MegMatthews_3
      @MegMatthews_3 ปีที่แล้ว

      what about if your flight lands in the morning? how do you avoid jet lag then?

    • @RevStickleback
      @RevStickleback ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MegMatthews_3 I once had a strange day arriving in Hong Kong in the morning. I just went out and had a full day of doing stuff. It was strange because even though I arrived at about 7 am, it felt like noon, so it felt like I had two afternoons.
      If you are there very early, and are lucky enough to be able to check in early, then you can get a couple of hours of sleep, but make sure you set an alarm.
      I still get it wrong. On my last long haul trip I arrived in Cambodia one morning, and met up with a mate who lives out there, for lunch. We had several beers, then I went back to my hotel to get changed. I lay back on my bed, and before I realised, I had fallen asleep for three hours.

    If the flight isn't full, bring along a few tools to take out all the seats in the middle of the aircraft, and chuck them onto the tarmac. Then, in the spare space, install a table-tennis table. [Or boxing ring, or whatever] Next, re-install all the front seats to face the rear, so that everybody can watch. Bring along heaps of beer. Then you can take turns competing, and drink heaps of beer when you are in the audience. The weak part of the plan is that some cockpit and cabin crew might not go along with the idea. Which is a shame, because it is a nice idea.
    You back-up plan is to bring along a huge phone book, and try to read it from cover to cover. If this doesn't get you off to sleep, then you are a hard-core insomniac, and probably should not fly.

    I got a sky pillow. They are designed for sleeping sitting up. It’s a blow up pillow that you put your face in the hole in the top and your arms in the side. Rest it on your knees or tray table. Best thing you also won’t snore

    Another tip: I have traveled internationally over 35 times. Always carry a cotton scarf. Us it to cover your head. It cuts out odors and helps create a "room". I wouldn't travel without one.

    I'll view a movie, eat, read a book and then try to doze off for the rest of the flight. 12,16 hours & 14,5 hours. Worst part is that during both flights I'm usually awake at those times 🙃

    The longest portion of my upcoming trip is 14 hours from Seattle to Singapore. I may take a nap but I don’t want to sleep much. I leave Seattle at 10 AM and arrive at Singapore at 5:30 PM. I’ll sleep at Singapore Airport and leave the next morning at 7 AM for Bangkok. It’s much more important for me to align my sleeping habits as I’m crossing 12 time zones I periodically take blood thinner medication and will be sure to take it going both ways

    I watched this video on a plane and halfway through I fell asleep instantly.
    But joke aside, you should have mentioned that the right way to wear a U-shaped sleeping pillow is with the opening at the back of your neck, so your chin and head will be nicely supported at the front. I had used the pillow the wrong way for years and I was constantly jerked awake every time when my head fell into the pillow's gap.

    Earplugs are a must! Those foam things are a complete waste of time, the best ones I have found are wax ear-plugs from the Pharmacy. If you have small ears...like me, you can pull them in half warm them up between your gingers to make them pliable and squash them into your ears and no noise....and they don't stick out, or fall out! 😊

    You can buy a leg swing that you slid over the tray and allows your feet to be off the ground and legs more comfortable. Not expensive makes 13 hr flights way better

      I bought one of those and it slipped off never to be found again. I attached it to the tray and it seemed to work ok. The people in front fully reclined and it pushed my knees down. The thing slipped off. I didn't see my knees for 10 hours later.

    Don’t eat too much of your meal and leave your dessert on the tray. I like to get my backpack that’s my carry on and put it under my feet, thereby elevating my legs as I find I can twist to the side better in this position to lean against at the side of the plane or my husband if I’m in the aisle seat.
