If you want to be "nice" to the other passengers, control your kids if you have any. I have been on flights with kids kicking the back of my seat, pulling my hair, etc. Also take them to the lavatory if you have to change them!
Controlling your kids is not hard. I have 5. They know if they act up they'll get a meeting Jesus party. Try taking your titty out of their mouth and discipline them! American kids are spoiled due to the fact that most are not disciplined. And if you dare say anything to a parent with an a$$hole child, have fun!
@@secarpenter951 AMEN! My kids have flown all over starting when they were little. We had "practice" flights long before the trip. Sugar free chewable mints or candy or ear plugs for clogged ears and THINGS to keep them OCCUPIED. I did all this because they were MY KIDS not the children of the people around me. If I keep turning around glaring at you & your kids - DISCIPLINE THEM! Stop closing your eyes or turning your head like they're not yours. Teaching age appropriate accountability starts young. Obviously not in the infancy stage but if they're smart enough to use your iPhone or iPad, they can behave.
My compliments to your excellent tips for travellers. I was a flight attendant for 30 years for a german airline. You (and tge way you think) are the most ideal type of customer a crew member could ever wish. Great way of thinking, positive and considerate attitude. I wish you many safe and happy landings 😊
do flight attendants accept candy? I am going on a 14 hour flight next month and anything I can do to make their day even just a lil brighter I'm willing to do...
I loved the thing about being nice to crew. I would like to add that it also helps to be nice to staff at check in. Here is my story: At Boston international LH had a problem as the plane that arrived was close to 100 seats short compared to booked passengers. Lots of angry people shouting at staff complaining and threats to sue airline and so forth. My aproach was different: I said "I know that this is hell for you and I apreciate what you try to do in a difficult situation. Is there anything you can do for me so I can get home? Any of the following destination airport will be fine". Seconds later I had been rebooked and was only a couple of hours late. Being nice helped!
I have smelled some of the people with the worst possible body odor on long-haul flights. I rarely smell stinky people in my day-to-day life but man, get on a plane and the smells you will smell... 😵
Best long haul flights I've had are when I've flown alone. Flew from Manchester to JFK and back with American and didn't get an allocated seat with my boarding pass at check in. Arrived at the gate to be asked if I was strong and capable enough to open the exit in an emergency said yes and got an exit seat with loads of leg room in both directions. Another time I flew from Manchester to Singapore with Singapore Airlines and I had an empty seat next to me. A flight attendant asked me if I'd give up my seat so that 2 friends on the same flight could sit next to each other. I said yes and to my surprise the attendant took me in to Business Class where I spent the 15 hours drinking free Champagne!
Very lucky, AA was on the other hand my worst long haul experiences, entertainment was offensively inoffensive all round, food was bad, one time they even only served a disgusting vegetarian dinner, it looked like a cow barfed, and frankly cow barf would probably have tasted better. Air Canada, and Iceland Air had the best entertainment, But the best food definitely was Air Greenland, it was almost like a michelin restaurant offered take out, alas they only have one long haul distance, Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq.
I dont know why but I feel like Im hesitant to turn on the small tv in front of me during flight. Even using earphone, I feel like uncomfortable watching while the person besides me try to watch it as well lol. not to mention the germs on those remote etc ewww lol
My husband and I have started booking aisle seats across from each other when we travel together. We spend a great deal of time together already. We don't need to sit right next to each other on the plane and we each get to be more comfortable. We are still close enough to talk if we want to and we both get to exit faster.
Biggest problem I have with long flights is boredom. So I bring a craft project, like needlepoint. Then I listen to an audio book, or movie, while doing my project. Multi-tasking is a good cure for boredom.
Thank you so much for the advice. You are so right about treating people nicely who are waiting on you. It must be a hard job working on a flight crew and dealing with nervous people (like me lol!). I am not a traveler, but I like to thank waiters/waitresses and store clerks and cashiers as much as I can. Yes, a good attitude is a good thing to carry with you wherever you go.
abc You’re right.... Will be travelling from Melbourne to Manchester via Dubai (MEL-DBX leg 14.5 hours and DBX-MAN leg 7.5 hours) in spring...... Us Aussies have lots of practice with long haul flights to/from Oz
@@silver_desperado Yes Perth, Sydney to San Francisco. Had an overnight break in Sydney it was OK to SF. Made sure had a walk around every few hours in the plane.
scir 91 noise reduction in ear earphones are good too. I take mine on every flight I take and it's blocks out all exterior sound they work really well and are usually cheaper than actual headphones, work just as well in my opinion.
1. Carry empty water bottles through security, then fill them up. Or just buy the biggest bottles you can find after security.2. Order a hot beverage on the plane so you can inhale the water vapor, and prevent the dry plane air from giving you nose bleeds. (I fully acknowledge I might just be weird on this one)
Chris F Plane air is pretty dry. And it in addition to the low pressure can indeed mess with your nose. I used to never have nosebleeds... Then I went to Austria to go skiing and something just popped in my nose...
Drama Queen .... sorry, thats BS ... breathing the Steam from the Food or Beverage. So when you enter WalMart or any other Store in the US does your Nose bleed? (AC is everywhere in the US, cooled down to Fridge Temperature) - visit a Doctor...
You read what I wrote? .. Frequent Traveler Status.... plenty of Miles, long Flights, sometimes several Times a Week. Business Travels. Does´t dry my Nose out worse than walking into WalMart or any other cooled down Shop in the US *lol* ..... just your Imagination - visit a Doctor
@@Roadent1241 Take both your feet, point your toes, now pretend you are writing in the sand with only your toes and write out the alphabet with them. Also near or after you land take off your shoes and socks and make fist with your feet on some carpet.
IF my husband's "plans" come to fruition this summer 2017, my VERY FIRST EVER flight will be from USA to Finland!!! (I'm middle-aged and never been ABLE to afford to fly anywhere - not that I'm afraid to fly or anything, we grew up camping.) ALL of this lifelong dream travel preparation is an ABSOLUTE nightmare-inducing panic attack for me, so your vids are AMAZINGLY helpful! ESP this one! Can't thank you enough for these!!!!
WE'RE GOING! WE'RE GOING from TX to Helsinki via London (& hopefully Paris, Amsterdam, Prague! -Rome would be a HUGE bonus!- ) Watching EVERY one of your travel vids that can help!!! THANK YOU @woltersworld
Valerie .... wathing alle these Stupid Tips, stuffing your Bag full of Emergency Rubbish makes you even more Nervous! Just get on the Plane like on a Greyhound Bus ... the Difference is just that it has Wings. See my Comments further up...
TY! I'm to planning the actual days of where to be, what to see & it's just still a shocking dream that I can't believe is about to come true. Now I just have to figure out all this train travel stuff! lol
As a Flight Attendant I appreciate the last two tips ;) A tip from me is to pack moisturizing face masks! (I would recommend sheet masks -they are convenient and they don't have too much liquid so you can bring it in your carry on), your skin will be so dry and thirsty from the air on the plane and you have enough time to do it. Your skin will be grateful! And don't worry about looking funny ;) For people with long hair: bring scrunchies! They don't bend and pull your hair as much as normal hair ties, therefore it's more comfortable.
When I traveled w wipes in my personal bag, the TSA agent had me take them out to inspect them. No problem after that. They were not in the liquids bag@@jessicaeastveld3304
do you guys accept candy from customers? I have a upcoming 13 hour flight next month and would love to bring a treat to the flight crew if they would accept it...and if so any idea on what kind? so I have a heads up?...also please stay safe
As we leave the plane I always say to the flight crew thanks for looking after us so well and they are always pleased and surprised. Also say tell the captain nice landing . Most times we have had a fairly smooth landing .
I am reminded of s story that Anthony Bourdain mentions in his book. He was on a 14 hour flight from NYC to Tokyo he said that the guy who had the extra sleeping pills became the hero of the flight!
Great post for "Rookie Travelers". A couple of other ideas to add that I use for both short and long haul: 1. If you make your own itinerary.... Write it all out! and Organize each ticket stage in order to make it smoother as you transfer. 2. If you have connections before or after long haul... Determine other connecting transportation methods in case of delays or cancellations. This will speed you up and beat the other inconvenienced passengers you just traveled with! 3. ZYCAM and Liquid sanitizer! A must with all the germs. Helps me every week I travel.. No sicknesses! Thanks again and love your information and travels!
use trip it asit will organize everything for you. tripit.com. just forward your confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com and voila. everything in one place. You can print it out and have the app on your phone.
Thank you for always making such happy and inspiring videos! Pay no attention to all the comments from idiots here; we just have to hope we don't sit next to them on a flight! Another tip is to always check in online 24 hrs before to ensure you are booked into the seat you initially chose.
What I found very uncomfortable on a flight to the US was that the Air Condition was on full power... apparently some people like the refridgerator feeling.
Max Mustermann That's not actually what happens. The plane is not air conditioned; it's heated - they are flying through subzero temperatures at these altitudes. And less heating is always cheaper. This is also the reason why plane air is so dry - cold air holds less water and when it's heated relative humidity drops

There were little vents and there was cold air coming out of them, that's what I meant by AC. You could turn down the airstream but most people (most Americans) turned it up on full power.
Thank you so much for reminding people that kindness and positive attitudes go a long way especially while traveling! It is so important and so easy to forget. I've subscribed :)
Agree. I would also recommend some hand creme, moisturizer for the face and lip balm (all in the zip lock bag ) or anything you would need because the air gets very dry. I also recommend something to read and a scarf bc. Of cold planes. And I bring my inflatable neck pillow for better sleep.
The pressure and humidity problem never bothers me, because I live higher and drier than most airplane cabins. If this does bother you, try and find flights on a 787 or A350, as those planes are usually pressurized a little more, and keep the air more humid.
Another reason to pack the items you'll need on your flight in your personal item and not your large carry-on: if the overhead fills up before your group is called to board, your carry-on might have to be checked, in which case you won't have it on the flight with you!!
One tip as well if you're on the larger side (like myself) one of the drawbacks of getting an exit or bulkhead seat on most carriers is that the tray table and tv are stored in the armrest. As a result, they are fixed, thus limiting the seat width further.
Mark, best thing to make a flight more enjoyable is to request a seat with a screaming young kid in the seat in the row behind you. Preferably the kid that will also kick the back of your chair constantly, throw bits of food at you and randomly make vile bodly smells through barf or worse - it's best when the parents of said kid do not give a flying fig about the kids behaviour and are soley focusing on drinking as much alcohol as possible. Wow, happy times!
Had a flight back from Sydney to Doha like that once. Toddler screamed the whole way. Mother ignored the poor child completely and the father walked it up and down the zisle for 12 hours. Awful.
While seated, slowly grab the back of both knees and bring them up slowly to your chest and slowly return. I have back issues and this works. Sit straight up and press your feet against the floor, hold for a moment and release. Gets the blood flowing. Remind yourself every X hours to walk the aisle. Avoid meal times though. I have flown the world and I use these techniques.
Get muscle relaxers before you go. The spasms can be criminally painful and staying quiet impossible. Get a two hour massage for that area before you go. Tell them before you arrive that you specifically want them to work on your sciatica as you will be taking a long-haul flight. When I have had sciatica I have been afraid to drive because when the pain comes I cannot control what happens and I always was afraid that I would get in a crash. Terrible issue. Losing weight helps. Avoid sitting too much in the weeks leading up to your travels.
If you aren’t allergic to aspirin or if you don’t have gastric ulcers I would recommend a low dose aspirin starting the day before your flight to help prevent a Venus thrombosis.Compressive socks or compressive panty hose for women.
Get compression socks (at least up to the knees) and walk around the plane every few hours. Helps me at least and i got about a couple million flight miles :)
Really thorough! Gonna be on a flight from Edinburgh to Osaka in a month and will definitely come back to these tips .) I am a no-sleeper on planes so I find entertainment is the top priority - Netflix and Prime now let you download films and shows onto your tablet or phone so I plan to do a lot of that before we depart .)
Just FYI, one side effect of melatonin is that it can make dreams/nightmares intensely more vivid for some people. (I had extreme horror movie-like nightmares on it.) I would recommend testing it out well in advance of departing.
If you have even a tiny bit of a headache - take pain killers before you get on (a few hours if you can) take extra with you. Also if you have never flown long haul or over water before take travel sickness tablets even if you dont normally get air sick. I've flown heaps around Australia and never had a problem, flew 4 weeks before our european trip did canberra to perth return in 36hrs no problems. But I started to get a headache before our Perth to Dubai flight, didn't take enough in headache tablets and that combined with air sickness made me so sick i nearly couldn't get on the flight to Munich. thank god for the pharmacy in dubai airport. weirdly i think it was flying over water for such a long period of time that made it worse but who knowns. going home i wasn't well on the dubai to perth leg but fine london to dubai and dubai to munich. just dont assume you wont be sick
If you don’t mind getting up for other people to use the bathroom, get an aisle seat. I honestly don’t mind getting up for others, so I always get an aisle seat.
My longest leg of a flight was 22 hours, 36 hours of total travel time going from Fort Lauderdale to Zimbabwe. My secret weapon was cough syrup to knock me out! LOL
I watch this everytime I have a flight, or even just traveling on a road trip because I feel you’re entertaining, and I love flying generally. Tbh, middle seat gets both armrests, window gets one and the window, aisle gets one and the aisle
I flew DFW - CDG in coach & I was miserable! When we landed I decided I will NEVER fly coach again on an overseas trip!! If that means less trips then so be it :) Great video, thanks!!!
1) For long flights, I always split up the trips. 2) I eat before we fly, 3) We buy our own snacks, 4) We pack light and buy things over there 5) The mile high relieves stress 5) Party before you fly so you can sleep and 6) Fly business class. Do not fly economy if you have a long flight... it's worth. 7) Be nice to the crew. They'll bend over backwards for you if your not an ass....
Can't agree with you more. Also, I'll take 1 extra day off if you have a short transit time during long haul flights. Like flight from Taipei to Dubai 10 hours, transit 1hr 45 mins only ,then Dubai to Rio , Brazil, another 14 hours. I will spend 1 extra night to sleep at the Dubai airport hotel. ( of course, if you are with a tour, this may not be feasible).
residentflea, I have found that breaking up the flight actually prolongs the stress of air travel. At each stop, you need to disembark, get your luggage and travel to and from the hotel. During the stopover you are somewhat jet lagged and can’t totally enjoy the sites.
Best advice given to me (and we took it). Travel business class, not economy. Sure it'll cost more (but in this day and age they're affordable). Once you've done it, you'll ALWAYS travel business class. Or if you're on a budget, consider "premium economy". Plenty of videos on TH-cam to help you decide what's best for you.
Don Coleman sage advice but with only one caution. I never went back to economy once I tried business. Now I'm engulfed in this savoury world of miles/ points. If I don't get a reasonable business product, I don't travel.
Thank you for sharing these. Don't forget to clear up some storage space for taking photos and videos, fill your netflix with offline content as well as TH-cam. Or bring some external hard drive.
not sure if anyone mentioned it but if you can book your seat on a plane book it in front of the wings. The noise difference is well worth the small amount of effort.
I love long haul flights! I did Manchester to NJ then on to DC .. I’m 6’2” and went with united airlines and cannot fault them! The leg room in economy was great, took a window seat and the air stewardess service was superb! All this and access to movies / snacks made for a very pleasant journey. Also I love the US and the people, very very friendly and helpful - can’t wait to go back!
I prefer a stop-over flight instead of non-stop flight. It takes overall longer hours, but far less tired, usually cheaper and have a chance to see new places. In some airports an agents offer a sightseing tour.
Totally agree. Breaks the long haul sitting. Plan on a couple of hours. Have a walk around, bite to eat if you like, it makes a big difference than 14 hours straight.
if you bring fruits and stuff.. think about the import restrictions for that... can be very costly if you forget to eat them and end up in customs control!
I got served a banana on a carrier going to Australia; a fruit that is banned if anyone happened to put it in their pack instead of eating it on the plane! Customs had "fruit-sniffing" dogs to find contraband fruit too. One of the dogs stopped beside me and sniffed my hand that had just held the banana peel before leaving the plane... I was relieved the handler realized I'd only held fruit in my hand. I wouldn't ignore any country Custom's rules ever; not worth the fines, or worse.
We were flying back from Rome landing in Virginia, and I was looking at this cute little beagle then 5 seconds later it was alerting to the apple in my moms bag, since we had a connection to LAX and my dad is an American Airlines Platinum Member we were being chaperoned around the airport we were rushed through the line, and we determined it was faster to go through the separate line then the larger ones, so moral of the story.... keep your fruit...
@@aileenking6262 Nice that it worked out for your Mom, but that's bad advice for others, when traveling internationally (by any conveyance). Some people have lost their Trusted Traveler status for carrying fruit through an international border checkpoint.
Thanks for the tips. I am a runner, so I have "partial" compression sox. They do not cover the foot, so they are great for putting on my lower legs without using them as socks, too. I can peel them off after the light is done.
I used to like looking out the window, but I quickly realised that you only get interesting views for the first and last 30 mins. The a380 is the best for window seats as there is so much room. I always go for isle seats now as it's easier to go to the toilet without disturbing anyone.
same here, and yes the a380 has a lot of space by the windows that you can put a bag on it during the fiight and you have a wider snd softer elbow rest
Can't thank you enough for posting this video. After watching, we just upgraded our seating on international CLT to FCO. 1st international flight. Your advise will no doubt make our trip more comfortable. Thanks again, Ron
long haul flights, choose isle seats, being person who never pays for choosing a seat, I am always early at check in and ask for isle seat ,works every time , you control your own movements, thus you can exercise / go to toilet ,get stuff out of your carryon, anytime you want without worrying about "being a bother. and this is biggy ! you can load last, there's no need to be on plane for any longer than you need to be."Do not have small bag as he said ,you need that space in front of you for your feet ( which are in warm socks,, durable ones that you can work around in ) shoes are off until you land ( at which point you stay seated until its your turn to exit plane, just relax and wait thankful that you have arrived, nobodies going anywhere fast getting off a plane!
You are fabulous and positive. Chanced upon your videos only recently and boy, how much have I missed! Great tips and really hope that everyone takes your tips seriously as it should have eliminated all the bad behaviours that have been reported on the international news.
I now bring a small inflatable beach ball. My feet nearly reach the floor so the circulation gets cut by the edge of the seat. With the ball my legs are a bit higher. I would be better a camping pillow (so it doesn't roll away) but i didnt want to spend the money just to see if it works.
:) THANK YOU so much for reminding us all to "be nice to your flight crew". I'm a flight attendant and I love meeting people from all over the world. We're all stuck on that airplane together and it's true - a pleasant attitude goes a LONG way! ;) Cheers to you and your family!
My flight is in twos days and I completely forgot about snacks... in my defence it's my first time flying for so long. Going to Italy and I've been obsessively watching all your videos about Italy and traveling in general. So grateful for this channel!!!
I'm heading back to South Africa in about a month. The 16 and a half hour flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg is never fun, but I've learned a few little hacks, like the ones you mentioned, that make those hours a little more tolerable 😊
Great video! Very helpful and informative! I fly the Tokyo to Toronto route (12-13 hrs) 3 times a year! Most of your tips I do practice....Your best advice...PACK A GOOD ATTITUDE! love it... Keep it real
Great video! Best piece of advice ever is your last point. Have a good attitude, make the best of any situation and don't stress! If you are a nervous flyer, tell your seat mate. they may just talk to you and your nerves will go. If they want to sleep, respect that.
Dear Mr Wolter, 1) In economy - choose a centre aisle seat because you can always get up to stretch your legs or go to the toilet. A window seat is a mistake because you're stuck and you'll only get a sore neck looking out the window into the darkness. 2) Exit and bulk-head seats are a problematic pain in the back because you can't lodge your legs into the frame of the seat in front and so you slide out of your chair and the carpet helps your feet and body to slide out too so you are fidgeting and re-adjusting the whole way which means less sleep and more aggravation. Never choose an exit or bulk head. And if there's turbulence - you will get injured. The best seat on the plane is a centre-aisle port side 1 row behind the first row in the centre of the plane - it's the most comfortable (pivot point of the air frame). 3) ALL airlines have a no food policy. A piece of fruit or a packet of lollies they will turn a blind eye. Anything more and it'll be confiscated. Think I'm kidding ? Ask your carrier. 4) If you want to piss off the air crew and hold everyone up - please undo your seatbelt before you're allowed to. OBEY THE RULES. That includes the seat belt !!!! 5) Congratulations !!! You've snuck on-board with a suit case that's too big for the over head locker. WE are all now looking at you and DESPISE you. Now we're held up while your 4000 packets of noodles and Rhino Horn mixed with Ivory dust is re-loaded into the hold. The whole journey your seat is marked. Air crew don't forget. WE hate you.
I spent two months in Europe this past spring visiting 5 countries. This video makes me want to pack my bag again. Lots of great tips, thank you. One to add, a microfiber towel folds up to next to nothing, but makes a great blanket on a plane, larger and warmer than the ones provided. As well as being nice to the flight attendants, be kind to the other passengers. An offer of help may not be accepted, but generally is appreciated.
Couldn't have come at a better time! Got a thirteen hour flight from germany to Singapore, and then a ten hour flight from Singapore back home to New Zealand coming up in two weeks time, and I'm travelling without my family so it's all on me this time! Thanks for the original and helpful tips!!
I used to be a travel agent and one important item you forgot to mention is if you want to sit in an emergency row exit and yes you absolutely get much more leg room is you MUST BE ABLE TO HELP THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY (OPEN THE EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW NEXT TO YOU, DIRECT PEOPLE TO THE EXIT, ETC) If you can't or have an ounce of feeling that you don't want to be bothered about this, you need to be re-seated and cannot sit in this row also you cannot be handicapped to sit in this row. Passengers must be of able body to perform and assist in an emergency. Would you like it if on your flight there would be an emergency and someone sitting in the emergency exit row is a wheelchair bound passenger and you'd be fumbling over their legs and body? This would not be productive during an emergency. My frank choice for seating (Aisle, center, and window seats) is Window, cause when you are on the aisle and center seat your row mates may occasionally need to go to the bathroom and have to wake you. If you choose window seat, no chance for anyone waking you. Absolutely if you are lucky enough to fly the new Airbus 380's, these airplanes are huge and offer lots of walking the aisles chances. Bring with you diphenhydramine (Benedryl) it's an antihistamine and take it just prior to boarding, it will make you drowsy to more being able to relax. Yes, you are right for staying hydrated but, in addition eat and keep yourself full. Whenever I fly and I ate well on the flight, I leave the plane in my destination better to function. One huge must is arrive for your flight EARLY. When you arrive early you can relax by your gate and it will be very less stressful. When the gate agent starts to call rows to board, they usually begin by asking if there is anybody requiring extra assistance, 1st class passengers board the plane here. There will usually be no passengers on the plane and you'll have ample room for on board storage of your luggage, and be able to quickly sit at your designated seat. If you are seated at a window or center seat, utilize the call bell button above you to summon the flight attendant if you need anything like a drink, etc but, don't abuse this remember the flight attendant(s) have lots of other people to serve. If you are on Virgin America utilize the order by your touch screen monitor in front of you on the seat back of the row in front of you. Virgin America flight attendants are very nice.
i’m traveling to europe for the very first time in july from mexico city to london! for my quinceañera trip with my friends. my first time traveling without my parents but i’m excited!
Choose your Aircraft Type properly too. For Boeing I'd choose a 787 (better air quality, air pressure, quieter) For Airbus A350 the same things. Airbus A350's new aircraft has real window shades which i prefer.
Some great advice there. My favourites; wear compression socks, buy some decent noise -cancelling headphones (Bose are excellent and fold up fairly compactly), be nice to the crew (they’re people too), drink lots of water but most of all, book the best seat you can afford. I recently discovered Premium Economy (Qantas) and wow, for long haul (like ten hours or more), it’s the best money you’ll ever spend and can be reasonably cheap if you shop carefully.
I am insomniac and my long haul flights are usually at nights, so I typically keep myself busy whole day and leave at least one assignment undone that I can work on in the flight knowing I won't sleep. I save off journal articles that I will need and other necessary resources.
I usually try to just sleep, and often I can catch some sleepy time while in the air. However, there's always something messing with your rest. It's either one of those strangers that want to talk with you all flight, or just the horror of a bad seat. I mean seats in planes only come in 2 varieties - very uncomfortable, and OH MY GOD THIS IS A TORTURE CHAIR.
I always have trouble sleeping upright so one thing I have recently started doing is popping down the tray and taking a hoodie and making a pillow out of it so I can sleep resting my head on that rather than against the back of the seat. Sleeping in class has made that one a piece of cake to do.
25 years of doing long haul flights I find noise cancelling headphones are almost a requirement. The Bose cancel low-freq and well as hi-freqs. No way would I waste space packing my own snacks-you're paying for them anyway just use what's available and quit whining. If you DO pack your own, don't include anything that, well, smells. Ask yourself if REALLY need extra camera equipment-remember you pack it, you're hauling it: ounces add up to pounds; pounds add up to pain. Your phone camera's probably good enough-really....
i always pack a round of vegetables such as peppers and cucumbers. this is to make sure i have a lot of fiber to eat with my provided meal. it keeps me regular and fills me up well.
grumblesa10 snacks in a plane can be bad or pricey. I have allergies so I cannot rely on airplane food, so I always pack my own. Also, this guy makes TH-cam videos, which requires more professional camera equipment. Phone cameras are not very reliable, especially for more high def video footage
Mark, for such a regular traveller I recommend this ( I DO NOT HAVE ANY AFFILIATION WHATSOEVER WITH THE COMPANY THAT MAKES THEM -Just want you to know that straight off because I am about to sing its praises like I do :) - but trust me its amazing to use for travelling): I use a 5:11 tactical RUSH delivery/messenger bag. It's awesome. I've got the smallest one in the range. Called the MIKE. 1st off its so comfortable to wear, nice padded sling strap - adjustable. There's also a smaller strap you can connect between the main strap and the bag to keep it close to the body so its not swinging around hitting other people as you move about. 2nd off There are sooo many separate pockets and compartments/sleeves you can organise everything you want to bring on the flight with you, so no rummaging when you're getting yourself situated in your seat and setting up your entertainment. 3rd, Two external bottle holders, one on either side so my wife and I have a bottle of water to reach for whenever we want (usually while waiting to board) once again, no rooting around for them or having to hold them. 4th its such a great design and so comfy to wear that when you get on the plane you can just swing it front of you with out taking it off and when you get to your seat, you still don't need to take it off straight away, just keep it in front of you and slide in, take your seat and let it sit on your lap, clearing the way immediately for your fellow passengers to continue along the aisle. Security benefits - I stick my passport and boarding pass in one of the outside zippered pockets on the outer flap and my phone in the other, making them secure but within easy access. The main flap folds over the front of the bag and can be buckled closed and has extra tough velcro on the inside of the flap, so even if a thief manages to miraculously release the buckles without you noticing, you'll definitely feel the tug as they try to clear the hidden velcro trap. There's another separate pocket on the opposite side of the body which I stick my wallet in and then I can close velcro over it inside the pocket then zipper the outside. Once again, easy to access, but virtually impossible for a pickpocket to get at with the internal velcro and the fact that side of the bag is the side pressed against my body. When you're going through security (as you said in one of your other vids, you should get your self ready as you move toward your turn) I can empty my pockets and take off my watch and just throw them into one of the outside pockets in seconds without the risk of everything spilling out when it goes through the Xray. It also has these adjustable loops underneath the bag so you can roll up your jacket and carry it there. AND as if all this wasn't enough, its also got a strap on the back side, once again with extra tough velcro that you can slide it onto the extending handle of a suitcase so you can roll with your suitcase and tactical bag sitting cheerily on the top, by pushing the velcro in, if anyone tried to snatch it off the suitcase when you're distracted it'll stay where it is and call more attention to their attempt. As I said, I have the smallest size one and I can fit all the above, *and* inside I have some protein bars if we get hungry, my mac book air 11.5", my journal, my wife's Surface Pro, My Kindle, My IPad, some pens and medications, two sets of headphones and a headphone splitter so we can both watch a movie together whenever. And all of these contents are neatly arrayed in their separate pockets so you know where everything is as soon as you open it. There's two bigger ones you can get, say if you have a bigger laptop, or you need to bring some toys and stuff for the kids, the Lima and the Xray sizes. I guarantee you and Jocelyn would find this kind of a bag a godsend. You can get various patches for the outside as well if you wanted to make it fun for the kids or increase its identifiability and you can amend the content as you see fit and use it to wander around sight seeing but your stuff will now be more secure. I got mine about 3 years ago and I can't imagine ever travelling without it now. Oh yes, its also weatherproof and made of very tough long lasting material. Just make sure you go for this model. I had a 5:11 tactical sling bag at one point but it was nowhere near as secure, comfortable or convenient for boarding various transports. Anyhow, hope I haven't bored you, but just wanted to share it with you as you've provided all of us with so many great tips, just wanted to return the favour. Hope you and the family continue to stay safe and have more great adventures :)
⚠️COMPRESSION SOCKS OR STOCKINGS ARE A MUST....I wish I knew that before I got a DVT ⚠️STAY EXTRA HYDRATED. if you get thirsty, you are already dehydrated. ⚠️TOOTHPASTE AND A TOOTHBRUSH ARE IMPORTANT! Your ,mouth will get dry and you’ll get an awful taste otherwise. ⚠️DEFINITELY WALK A BIT OR FLEX AND RELAX YOUR LEGS TO AVOID BLOOD CLOTS. STAYING HYDRATED ALSO HELPS PREVENT CLOTS
If there is an airline to your destination that employs a Boeing 787 Dreamliner choose that flight. The flight will be much more pleasant since that craft is the only one that has a 20% humidity in flight compared to only 4% on other aircraft. That makes a big difference on how much better you will fell after 10+ hours and this will help get you over any jet lag you may have, you won’t feel as tired and the start of your trip will be much nicer. The craft is lighter than standard planes (80% carbon fiber) thus it flies higher (40,000 feet) which translates to less turbulence. In short, a better experience even if you’re stuck in Economy.
lockergr If you are referring to the “fog” that comes out of the vents when the plane lands, it is not a feature of the plane but rather the warm humid air from outside the plane that has been let in and has cooled by the plane’s air conditioning or still cold vents from the flight.
Thank you for this video! I have a 14 hour flight to Germany to look forward to in April (2018) and i am NOT looking forward to it-however, Delta is definitely my favorite for any and all flights, so i’m definitely happy about that! Awesome video :)
If you want to be "nice" to the other passengers, control your kids if you have any. I have been on flights with kids kicking the back of my seat, pulling my hair, etc. Also take them to the lavatory if you have to change them!
Casey Vee YES!!! AMERICA KIDS ARE SPOILED!!
anna leonardi the flight attendants are now afraid to say anything and I don't blame them. They took their leverage out.
And say what you like but a dose of Children's Tylenol or Benadryl for their, ahem, fevers, calms them down or puts them to sleep for a few hours.
I love it! "Pack a good attitude." Absolutely, the best recommendation ever!
My compliments to your excellent tips for travellers. I was a flight attendant for 30 years for a german airline. You (and tge way you think) are the most ideal type of customer a crew member could ever wish. Great way of thinking, positive and considerate attitude.
I wish you many safe and happy landings 😊
German airline is so the Best. Cheerful hospitable excellent. Air Canada is deplorable.
do flight attendants accept candy?
I used to bring Chicago pizza and they would store mine without a hazzle
PLEASE take a shower before you leave for the airport, too.
Scott Byer i promise next time i will ;) but yeag i have had that fun before :)
I have smelled some of the people with the worst possible body odor on long-haul flights. I rarely smell stinky people in my day-to-day life but man, get on a plane and the smells you will smell... 😵
Duh
Hopefully, Indians and Arabs will heed your advice.
....and don't wear fragrance/cologne either.
Lucky you! Ahaha.
hehe
Very lucky, AA was on the other hand my worst long haul experiences, entertainment was offensively inoffensive all round, food was bad, one time they even only served a disgusting vegetarian dinner, it looked like a cow barfed, and frankly cow barf would probably have tasted better. Air Canada, and Iceland Air had the best entertainment, But the best food definitely was Air Greenland, it was almost like a michelin restaurant offered take out, alas they only have one long haul distance, Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq.
Michael Scott flying solo is the best thing of life. I have done it and always meet people and get great seats as well. Cheers mate !
Michael Scott i
bring a good book, video game, or stack of mags because the one TV that will be broke on the flight is yours.
ataylor, yes! mine has been broken on a few flights. oy!
Whole, entire AV system was down on one transatlantic flight I was on.
That sucks.
Also a great opportunity to get a free upgrade… complain about a broken televisoon, and they wont hesitate to move you up
I dont know why but I feel like Im hesitant to turn on the small tv in front of me during flight.
Tessa T sounds annoying for anyone next to you that has to be forced to overhear your convos while attempting to sleep
SEENO exactly no respect whatsoever
So two strangers can sit next to you instead
That's exactly what we have been doing lately. I can't tolerate the middle seat. I am somewhat claustrophobic.
This is the only way we book our seats. you can get up and walk around when you like
Biggest problem I have with long flights is boredom. So I bring a craft project, like needlepoint. Then I listen to an audio book, or movie, while doing my project. Multi-tasking is a good cure for boredom.
They let you bring needles aboard?
@@IrishAnnie - plastic needles
Thank you so much for the advice. You are so right about treating people nicely who are waiting on you. It must be a hard job working on a flight crew and dealing with nervous people (like me lol!). I am not a traveler, but I like to thank waiters/waitresses and store clerks and cashiers as much as I can. Yes, a good attitude is a good thing to carry with you wherever you go.
when living in australia all flights are really long ://
abc have you ever flown economy on Qantas from USA to Australia

Noise-cancellation headphones (Bose) is for me the most important thing to have on flights. It's a bit expensive, but man is it worth it! :)
do they actually work? sounds like a gimmick
scir 91 it totally works. Best purchase of my travel life.
scir 91 noise reduction in ear earphones are good too. I take mine on every flight I take and it's blocks out all exterior sound they work really well and are usually cheaper than actual headphones, work just as well in my opinion.
My expensive Bose noise cancellers have paid for themselves MANY times over. DO bring Xtra Batts for them...just in case !
scir 91 Indeed they do work. Great sound quality too! They are a must.
Chris F that breathing in the steam is so clever!! I was always an idiot and had a lip balm specifically for my nose lol
Drama Queen .... sorry, thats BS ... breathing the Steam from the Food or Beverage. So when you enter WalMart or any other Store in the US does your Nose bleed? (AC is everywhere in the US, cooled down to Fridge Temperature) - visit a Doctor...

IF my husband's "plans" come to fruition this summer 2017, my VERY FIRST EVER flight will be from USA to Finland!!! Valerie Purcell train travel is the easiest, if you're going to London use the EUROSTAR website, look for offers online and package deals
As a Flight Attendant I appreciate the last two tips ;)
A tip from me is to pack moisturizing face masks! (I would recommend sheet masks -they are convenient and they don't have too much liquid so you can bring it in your carry on), your skin will be so dry and thirsty from the air on the plane and you have enough time to do it. Your skin will be grateful! And don't worry about looking funny ;)
For people with long hair: bring scrunchies! They don't bend and pull your hair as much as normal hair ties, therefore it's more comfortable.
Louise Graf
Do the sheetmasks need to go in the liquids bag?
When I traveled w wipes in my personal bag, the TSA agent had me take them out to inspect them. No problem after that. They were not in the liquids bag@@jessicaeastveld3304
do you guys accept candy from customers? I have a upcoming 13 hour flight next month and would love to bring a treat to the flight crew if they would accept it...and if so any idea on what kind? so I have a heads up?...also please stay safe
yes it would be new and unopened lol
As we leave the plane I always say to the flight crew thanks for looking after us so well and they are always pleased and surprised. Also say tell the captain nice landing . Most times we have had a fairly smooth landing .
I am reminded of s story that Anthony Bourdain mentions in his book. He was on a 14 hour flight from NYC to Tokyo he said that the guy who had the extra sleeping pills became the hero of the flight!
Yep, it's 3 melatonine tablets for me!
22 hour flight from London to Sydney in November on my own. This was so helpful 👌🏼
Great post for "Rookie Travelers". A couple of other ideas to add that I use for both short and long haul:

@@tomwarden7733 this genuinely made me laugh for 7 minutes straight 😂 thank you for that
Always check the seat leg, you will be surprised once and a while and find a 110 volt outlet to plug in and charge
My tip is to not sleep in 30 hours, and than sleep on the plane
thats what I do before Business Trips...

Max Mustermann Its the outside weather I know coming from London England a few months ago outside temperature was a -26 degrees
There were little vents and there was cold air coming out of them, that's what I meant by AC. You could turn down the airstream but most people (most Americans) turned it up on full power.
J SRT8 -26 degrees? Does it get that cold in London?
Thank you so much for reminding people that kindness and positive attitudes go a long way especially while traveling! It is so important and so easy to forget. I've subscribed :)
Smile to young kids. Parents can be nervous their kids will bother nearby passengers. Smile to the kid. Happy kid everytime.
I shall live vicariously through your adventures.
As a person that works 7 days a week and will probably never travel I immensely enjoy your content.

I have called out on parents and have called out to a flight attendant if the parents are non- compliant. There is absolutely no excuse😫
@@phillvapez8285
Phillip I would have gone for the parents instead.

Sciatic nerve pain and leg thrombosis survival tips needed.
I have flown the world and I use these techniques.
leg thrombosis is one very compelling reason to stretch your legs occasionally.
Kakibot, have you tried melatonin? It doesnt work for everyone but I know how hard it is to Not sleep.
Haven't tried that yet although I do remember my friend telling me it worked for her! I will look into it before the big trip .) Thank you!
Try it in advance. Gives me seizures. Another guy I know takes it and would sleep through a nuclear blast on it.
Kakibot, you should ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Our doc recommended using liquid so we can use doses as small as 1ml.
It is unclear to me why flying over water would be any worse than flying over land.
LOL

I flew DFW - CDG in coach & I was miserable! When we landed I decided I will NEVER fly coach again on an overseas trip!! If that means less trips then so be it :) Great video, thanks!!!
Great as always. You need a TV show so more people can see the great work you do.
Yeah....can't afford business class unfortunately. I have always flown economy, i just have to adapt and deal with discomfort.
residentflea, I have found that breaking up the flight actually prolongs the stress of air travel. At each stop, you need to disembark, get your luggage and travel to and from the hotel. During the stopover you are somewhat jet lagged and can’t totally enjoy the sites.
That’s so cool how you take your children all over, they’ve already had a way better childhood than I could have ever dreamed of!!
Huh. I naturally sit near wings lol
Interesting. Qantas does not consider a 14 hour flight to be long haul - it’s medium. Long haul is 18 hour’s plus - generally Australia to Europe
i like u man, u speak fast, no boring entrances etc.. keep it up
I prefer a stop-over flight instead of non-stop flight.
Fuck that no offense but ill pay xtra just to get there sooner
Spot on Mark! There's nothing worse when you fly than those people who seem to spend half the time standing up rummaging in the overhead bins.
Another tip is try to fly at night for the really long flights. You are usually asleep anyway.
if you bring fruits and stuff.. think about the import restrictions for that... can be very costly if you forget to eat them and end up in customs control!
Ma St, There are spots to discard fruit etc on landing or just leave it with the cabin staff.

My Solo Travel My husband and I get isle seats side by side. I’m small he’s tall but neither of us wants that middle seat so it’s perfect for us.
same here, and yes the a380 has a lot of space by the windows that you can put a bag on it during the fiight and you have a wider snd softer elbow rest

Very well informed honest videos this is why I like their TH-cam channel. Keep up with the great videos. 😊
long haul flights, choose isle seats, being person who never pays for choosing a seat, I am always early at check in and ask for isle seat ,works every time , you control your own movements, thus you can exercise / go to toilet ,get stuff out of your carryon, anytime you want without worrying about "being a bother. and this is biggy ! you can load last, there's no need to be on plane for any longer than you need to be."Do not have small bag as he said ,you need that space in front of you for your feet ( which are in warm socks,, durable ones that you can work around in ) shoes are off until you land ( at which point you stay seated until its your turn to exit plane, just relax and wait thankful that you have arrived, nobodies going anywhere fast getting off a plane!
I have a 14 hour flight from Sydney to Vancouver so this was really helpful! You just earned a subscriber!
I am going to Malaga for my 26th birthday party I can't wait for July to come around
Yeah, that's the next place I'm headed to!
How was it ?
Great video! Best piece of advice ever is your last point. Have a good attitude, make the best of any situation and don't stress! If you are a nervous flyer, tell your seat mate. they may just talk to you and your nerves will go. If they want to sleep, respect that.
Dear Mr Wolter,
1) In economy - choose a centre aisle seat because you can always get up to stretch your legs or go to the toilet.
Fly SAS - It's Scandinavian.
Hahaha - bloody good advice. There's a special place in hell for those noodle/rhino horn people :-)
I spent two months in Europe this past spring visiting 5 countries.
Flying to Brazil for the 2nd time with my wife and 3 yr old. Wife is Brazilian. Great tips!
Best travel info site. Thanks Mark, I recommend your site to all the travelers I drive.
Choose your Aircraft Type properly too. For Boeing I'd choose a 787 (better air quality, air pressure, quieter) For Airbus A350 the same things. Airbus A350's new aircraft has real window shades which i prefer.
best piece of advice is be nice that's means how nice you are.
Big like for you.
Omg I actually love this guyyyy :))))
Compression socks are a great tip!!
15 hour flights are brutal , just got to grind it out
I am insomniac and my long haul flights are usually at nights, so I typically keep myself busy whole day and leave at least one assignment undone that I can work on in the flight knowing I won't sleep.
To be fair, he films and makes videos, so that camera gear is important for his job. :)
grumblesa10 snacks in a plane can be bad or pricey.
Hope you and the family continue to stay safe and have more great adventures :)
compression socks on long flights - agree 100%
I tried to do this. My feet get too hot in them and then I was super uncomfortable. Just gonna have to write the alphabet with my feet instead :)
Absolutely! My feet had swollen so much, I could’ve get my shoes back on!!!! So, on our last long trip, I brought two pairs and they really helped.
⚠️COMPRESSION SOCKS OR STOCKINGS ARE A MUST....I wish I knew that before I got a DVT
⚠️STAY EXTRA HYDRATED. if you get thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
B T The coolest playing that I've ever been on had that humidity fog coming out. I had never seen anything like that and it was quite a shocker.
lockergr If you are referring to the “fog” that comes out of the vents when the plane lands, it is not a feature of the plane but rather the warm humid air from outside the plane that has been let in and has cooled by the plane’s air conditioning or still cold vents from the flight.
Thank you for this video! I have a 14 hour flight to Germany to look forward to in April (2018) and i am NOT looking forward to it-however, Delta is definitely my favorite for any and all flights, so i’m definitely happy about that! Awesome video :)
Your final tip was the most important!
Thanks for sharing these awesome tips. I'm going to share this video with my mom.
