Best long haul flights I've had are when I've flown alone. Flew from Manchester to JFK and back with American and didn't get an allocated seat with my boarding pass at check in. Arrived at the gate to be asked if I was strong and capable enough to open the exit in an emergency said yes and got an exit seat with loads of leg room in both directions. Another time I flew from Manchester to Singapore with Singapore Airlines and I had an empty seat next to me. A flight attendant asked me if I'd give up my seat so that 2 friends on the same flight could sit next to each other. I said yes and to my surprise the attendant took me in to Business Class where I spent the 15 hours drinking free Champagne!

Very lucky, AA was on the other hand my worst long haul experiences, entertainment was offensively inoffensive all round, food was bad, one time they even only served a disgusting vegetarian dinner, it looked like a cow barfed, and frankly cow barf would probably have tasted better. Air Canada, and Iceland Air had the best entertainment, But the best food definitely was Air Greenland, it was almost like a michelin restaurant offered take out, alas they only have one long haul distance, Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq.

As a Flight Attendant I appreciate the last two tips ;)
A tip from me is to pack moisturizing face masks! (I would recommend sheet masks -they are convenient and they don't have too much liquid so you can bring it in your carry on), your skin will be so dry and thirsty from the air on the plane and you have enough time to do it. Your skin will be grateful! And don't worry about looking funny ;)
For people with long hair: bring scrunchies! They don't bend and pull your hair as much as normal hair ties, therefore it's more comfortable.

My husband and I have started booking aisle seats across from each other when we travel together. We spend a great deal of time together already. We don't need to sit right next to each other on the plane and we each get to be more comfortable. We are still close enough to talk if we want to and we both get to exit faster.

It must be a hard job working on a flight crew and dealing with nervous people (like me lol!). Mark, best thing to make a flight more enjoyable is to request a seat with a screaming young kid in the seat in the row behind you. Preferably the kid that will also kick the back of your chair constantly, throw bits of food at you and randomly make vile bodly smells through barf or worse - it's best when the parents of said kid do not give a flying fig about the kids behaviour and are soley focusing on drinking as much alcohol as possible. Wow, happy times!

I keep a little bottle of water flavoring, like Mio, which can make tepid bottled water more palatable.
Make sure you either eat your snacks or throw them out before customs. So many foods are not allowed into the country you're arriving in. (meat, fruit, dairy, seeds etc.) OR make sure they're on your declaration.
If you medicate, don't forget to take your meds before flying. There is nothing worse than sitting in a plane for an hour waiting for meds to kick in.
I take my kindle everywhere, but I also have a book in case I'm waiting for my kindle to recharge.
Set your watch to your arrival time before getting off the plane so you don't miss connections, busses, trains, or whatever.

long haul flights, choose isle seats, being person who never pays for choosing a seat, I am always early at check in and ask for isle seat ,works every time , you control your own movements, thus you can exercise / go to toilet ,get stuff out of your carryon, anytime you want without worrying about "being a bother. and this is biggy ! you can load last, there's no need to be on plane for any longer than you need to be."Do not have small bag as he said ,you need that space in front of you for your feet ( which are in warm socks,, durable ones that you can work around in ) shoes are off until you land ( at which point you stay seated until its your turn to exit plane, just relax and wait thankful that you have arrived, nobodies going anywhere fast getting off a plane!

I recommend checking out the audio library: the TV is hard to watch for any length of time, assuming you can find something worth watching, but most airlines have a really extensive audio library with a lot of good music to suit all tastes. With them headphones on, eyes shut you’ll find time passes like magic.
The other thing is don’t take young kids with you. A seven hour flight is more than most kids can handle, and you can’t blame them for getting grumpy. No-one on a flight wants to be in the vicinity of bored kids. Really. If you got small kids, stay local in your car.

For any flight, but especially for long haul international flights, arrive an hour and a half to two hours early. Makes traveling so much less stressful, coming from a guy whose mom is notoriously late. Also, if you have a layover in another city before going to your final destination, it helps to find a map of that airport to know where your connecting flight is and where you can go to the bathroom or grab a bite before your next flight.

I got served a banana on a carrier going to Australia; a fruit that is banned if anyone happened to put it in their pack instead of eating it on the plane! Customs had "fruit-sniffing" dogs to find contraband fruit too.
One of the dogs stopped beside me and sniffed my hand that had just held the banana peel before leaving the plane... I was relieved the handler realized I'd only held fruit in my hand.
I wouldn't ignore any country Custom's rules ever; not worth the fines, or worse.

If there is an airline to your destination that employs a Boeing 787 Dreamliner choose that flight. The flight will be much more pleasant since that craft is the only one that has a 20% humidity in flight compared to only 4% on other aircraft. That makes a big difference on how much better you will fell after 10+ hours and this will help get you over any jet lag you may have, you won’t feel as tired and the start of your trip will be much nicer. The craft is lighter than standard planes (80% carbon fiber) thus it flies higher (40,000 feet) which translates to less turbulence.
In short, a better experience even if you’re stuck in Economy.

    • @lockergr

    • @BT-dh1jb
      @BT-dh1jb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

lockergr If you are referring to the “fog” that comes out of the vents when the plane lands, it is not a feature of the plane but rather the warm humid air from outside the plane that has been let in and has cooled by the plane’s air conditioning or still cold vents from the flight.

Long haul flights from Australia are approx 20+ hours to Europe, depending on the route. Totally sucks, but I'm so grateful that I have the means to travel. I went to Stockholm last year from Melbourne and it totalled 27 hours. (Transited through Abu Dhabi and Berlin) Oh my Lordy, it was a slog, there's only so many times you can rewatch Deadpool. Took me 3 days to get over the jet lag (and get used to 4am sunrises) but boy it was worth it. when you come across a cheap ticket and want to go with it there is no such thing as doing a check on their performance, review, seats, food etc. the only consideration is are they a reliable airline to take u from point A to point B. Great tips! After years back and forth from NY to Australia(via LA for some reason), I'll never fly cattle class again. The cost is def with it to be able to sleep and shower, and access the Admirals clubs at the airports. Def stay hydrated at all times cuz the cabin air is ratchet.

One thing about exit aisles. If it's close to the central lavatory (certain Airbus models), say goodbye to your extra space. I often have found people think the space in front of me is the waiting queue and have even had people step on my feet. I was like yay extra room and then was like well I wish I just had a regular seat.

Flew 7 round trips to Africa last year.. 23 hours total with 5 hour layover in London. I love to drink but if you do so on the first leg you will be in bad shape by the time you hit the layover and worse by the end of the second leg. (I cant sleep on planes)
Easy on the booz (I know its free.. try)

One more tip for long distance flights with a connecting flight: pack a second t-shirt into your hand luggage. I was on a plane from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt a few weeks ago and I thought: Well, this short time to Hamburg, I'll change clothes at home. So I was all sweaty in Frankfurt and pretty much all the flights to Hamburg were canceled. Instead of arriving around 2 pm, I arrived at half past six... Still wearing the clothes I wore when I left the hotel in Buenos Aires some 20 hours ago.

If you can, fly first class with lay flat seats. Makes all the differnce when you can lay down and sleep. If you have the time take a transatlantic ocean liner like the Queen Mary 2. The inside cabins are suprisgly affordable.

Book a window seat, hit the toilet before boarding, take a sleep helper with a beer just before the meal, eat the meal, put on a good movie, lean against the window and nighty night for 6 hours. No one has to bother me to go to the lavatory. Everything I need during the flight is in my personal bag under the seat in front of me.

A few tips relative to being tall! So if it's at all possible for you please consider not reclining your seat back or a least not all the way back. It's understandable if you need to but it really sucks sucks for tall people behind you on a long flight. Also if you know your feet smell bad please keep your shoes on or bring slippers to put on & try to refrain from covering yourself with perfume right before the flight, strong smells can make some people nauseous/have migraines. Lastly, and this ones obvious, for yourself BRING HEADPHONES! Sometimes there's crying babies/screaming children/noises you may prefer to drown out, and having headphones makes it much easier, bonus if you have the noise cancellation kind

Don't bother with the snacks. A good airline will offer snacks throughout the flight, even between meals.
Keep the snacks (foreign snacks) as stuff to bring back home.

Im an extremely picky eater and i have a 16hr flight coming up in less than 2 weeks. Im probably just going to load up at the airport for food. Pick up a few sanwiches or something. Also ill bring a bunch of junk food snacks because those are easier to bring through TSA and are an arm and a leg at the airport.

*Scarfs, handkerchiefs, a pashmina; all three!*. Packable DEODORANT! Breath Mints!
I had the worst six hour flight back in April 1991; it was colder than I thought and I got airsickness. The wonderful flight attendant asked The other passengers if they had some motion sickness medication and somebody did give it to her to give to me: that was the most wonderful kindest thing! I wish I would’ve had a really long scarf or a really long triangular handkerchief so I could’ve made myself a blindfold; but I didn’t Unfortunately! Pack an comfortable long cotton neck scarf AND a Pashmina like thing, Please! That wonderful flight attendant gave me two blankets and two pillows and then she kindly moved me to a place where I had three seats in a row to myself so I could lie down! *A black or dark colored pashmina can be used as a blanket and a blindfold; a smelly next seat neighbor? You can also cover up your nose. I love Pashmina’s because they can be used in so many different ways.*

Take a carrier bag for rubbish - after meals they don't clear away for ages and you can be wedged into your seat by a mountain of trash. Also, if you do want to take mouthwash (or any other liquid) you may need to buy it airside or it might be confiscated at security.
