APOLLO 18 (Lunar Arachnid Biology, Toxins + Ending) EXPLAINED

  • Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained and as voted for by everyone in the latest poll, today we’ll be exploring Apollo 18.
During the Apollo program, six crewed missions would land on the Moon collecting lunar material that was returned back to earth (with a seventh, Apollo 13, notably requiring James Lovell, John Swigert, and Fred Haise to make a tense emergency return to Earth without making it to the moon.
Throughout each of the successful missions, twelve astronauts performed a number of studies and observations that would shape our understanding of the Moon. Each of the voyages were required to explore new areas of the surface and leave behind nuclear-powered instruments that continued to send information back to Earth, long after they left.
But the Apollo program would end in December 1972 with Apollo 17. Why did that happen?
The Canadian/American production written by Brian Miller and directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego follows the apollo 18 mission. Through found-footage recovered from the voyage, we learn the supposed cancelled mission had actually made its way to the moon.
Nestled between an explosion of Alien movies released in 2011, including Super 8, Battle: Los Angeles, The Darkest Hour, Cowboys and Aliens, I am Number Four, Paul, and The Thing (the prequel we covered last week) Apollo 18 is a fascinating piece of revisionist history.
Taking elements from films like The Blair Witch Project and Alien, the mayhem that followed is explained as being the reason why the US abandoned any further attempts of heading back to the moon again.

There was a fifth ending where John Grey was revealed to have survived and made it back to Earth. In his debriefing, a DoD official reveals that they actually wanted Ben's body brought back to Earth - they were purposefully sent to get infected and return so they could study the Moon aliens' venom and turn it into a possible bioweapon against the Soviets, due to reports of them attempting to do the same.

I think they don't use the debris to purposefully camoflauge themselves. It'd make more sense that they're just dormant for such long periods that the moon dust/rock becomes coated on their carapace. Since they probably have gone millions of years without food, it'd be the only way for them to survive long enough until fresh prey arrived (though feeding on solar radiation seems more likely, they could've just been attacking out of defense of their territory and not for food).

The ending suggesting they were on Earth I think would have been a situation the world would be dealing with at the time the footage was uploaded. These things are clever spiders and this planet has a lot more food than the Moon ever would even if it had multiple species living on it. Since they were delivered to important people around the world it would be noticed. I really like the horror of not only finding an unknown Russian vessel but also a corpse there.

There is a largely debunked conspiracy theory about Lost Cosmonauts which claimed that during the space race numerous cosmonauts died while attempting to do space missions but that the Soviet Union tried to cover up their deaths to save face. That sounds like something neat that the movie could've done with astronauts finding out a terrifying reason why they were going missing on the moon.

This would be an interesting reason on why we have never returned to the moon. A mission that had gone horribly wrong because alien life was picking us off one at a time up there. And both the government and NASA just settles too expensive to keep going back to the moon, never explaining that there were creatures out there killing people. Living the best conspiracy, ever if that was to be revealed.

An excellent analysis as always. I especially liked the theories of the greater alien ecological systems, and the coverage of the alternate endings. It's a grim and chilling film, and while others have said, it's not perfect, but it can let the imagination run, as all good cosmic horror does. :-)

I'm not a huge horror fan but I really like this movie. Is the premise a bit silly yes, yes it is. However the constant feeling that something just isn't right works. Then in the second half when it's revealed they are really not alone and how they can't really do anything just works. I love how the movie manages to make us feel the same way the astronauts are. If you ignore the silly premise then it's enjoyable. A friend of mine told me he finds the actor's performance isn't good but I think it works for the movie.

Awesome video, I love the narration and explanation. Honestly, I think there was aliens that communicated through radio waves I think we would have detected them by now. Especially since all the radio waves sent out in the last 100 years or so. If the spider thingy's were annoyed or confused themselves. We probably would of seen that as background interference as well.
Just guessing though. However, our governments are not the best when it comes being transparent about things haha.
The evolution of those creatures is interesting as well because it looks like they evolved perfectly to survive on the moon with little nutritional and very little gravity. I'm not sure if they're bodies would have enough strength to do that type of damage to humans as the force required to not a lot on earth, but on the moon where there is 1/6th the gravity so the force required would need to be much more intense. The bite and slowly killing us is more likely.
The other thing, if they use solar radiation as a source of sustenance why do they need a mouth? they don't even use their mouths to communicate like we do. They're bodies vibrate a certain way to form a slight radio wave frequency which they use to communicate and let's one another know where the other is. Similar to bee's I would suspect.
Again all speculation haha like Niyat said. Maybe they're a predator, and maybe they're the prey.
Ok, im done haha great video though. I think i want to watch the full movie now.

They really messed up when they gave the creatures clearly visible eyes. Aside from it being a huge weak point it kind of distracts from the terror you're supposed to feel looking at the rest of the monster. They should have maybe gone with something that looks closer to the way a lobster's eyes look in real life. If the creature is easier on the eyes it's easier for people to anthropomorphize it making it way less scary. They got everything else right tho I remember being pretty scared of it in the theaters

I still remember when this movie first came out - I was fascinated with the Apollo program at the time and remember going to the movies to see it with my family. Of course being a little kid, I got too scared and left the movie theater before they even got to the moon. I just watched the movie last night after years of mystery surrounding it and was a little disappointed. When the movie first came out the small glimpses from the trailer like the unexplained footprint next to the astronaut's foot print, the security cameras inside the lander, the darkness of the moon all made thinking about it very scary. Keep in mind this was 2011 so these types of horror films were becoming very popular and weren't burnt out yet. My disappointment was mainly the aliens themselves, I was expecting them to be humanoid like (the footprint) and slowly lurk on the astronauts. I do think that the way the movie refused to show the aliens in the trailers was a smart move, and it only made me 10x more scared to watch it. Also the ending wasn't bad, but I think the alternate ending where Grey makes it back to Earth was the best one. Overall this movie is pretty underrated and I think the atmosphere it potrayed was great, the reason why we never went back to the moon. They did a pretty good job considering their budget, one of my favorite parts is where they just find the Soviet lander sitting there, instantly amping up the creepiness. The nostalgia surrounding this movie definitely clouds how I feel about it, but let me know if you would change the aliens too!

These creatures having venom could only mean there is an ecosystem of creatures on the moon. That or the director simply did not think so far as to acknowledge in some way that venom implies there is a reason to have it other than story driven plot.

Not necessarily. Sometimes things are just allergic to the bodily fluids of other things. Just because their secretions are venomous to us doesn't mean it's intended as a weapon. It simply means they have a different biochemistry because of evolution in harsher conditions. Their building blocks are different. If we ever encounter silicone-based life, it will be venomous and toxic to us, why? Because silicone is toxic to humans. Not because the lifeform has ill intentions.

“Finally your covering my favorite Childhood horror movie that is “Apollo 18” and its ashamed that there’s barely any movies that cover of being alone in space with alien or the Blackwing Virus zombies in a star destroyer . . . Those were good times”
“Also I have to bring up Warhammer 40k joke in here”
“Space Marines invading the Moon/Luna and discovered Rock spider alien”
Space Marines: “Filthily Xeno rock Spider? Feel the wrath of our Emperor’s finest!” (Immediately began purging all rock spiders on the moon)

And just to think who would have believed that they were rock spiders on the moon. And that's the reason why NASA was like we have a major case of arachnophobia so we will not be going back to the moon🌕🌕🌕🕷🕷🕷
