When this movie came out, I didn't know it was an Alien movie, and I wish I still didn't know...
Yeah, I was like. That alien ship is total rip off.
Then at the end I was like, oh it is a Aliens movie...
As someone who didn’t see Alien or Predator in their hay day, can you explain why something like this movie does the Story canon a disservice?
@@amaurys93 the movie itself doesn't exactly do a disservice to the series but the sequel it produced is pretty bad and ruins the mythos of the Xenomorph.
Theres no mystery to the Xenomorph anymore.
Its degraded to a Androids school project.
But that's just my opinion.

Y'all are partially the reason Ridley went this route with the Covenant sequel, as many fans were asking Ridley to go back to the original Alien story about Xenomorphs and the feel of hopelessness coupled w fear of the unknown..
Despite the flaws of this film, I was actually excited about what Shaw was going to find on her journey to the Engineer's homeworld. But then Covenant comes out and....Shaw is just a lifeless husk on a table

Michael Fassbender is often the highlight of movies he's in. Also removing their helmets will forever be made fun of when ppl talk about this movie.
That and the Prometheus' School of running away from things
In one of the terrible X-Men movies (Apocalypse, I think), I vividly remember Fassbender's Magneto being forced to kill again to protect his family after going into hiding and trying to live a human life.
On his knees in the forest, he looks up at the sky and screams, "IS THIS WHO I AM?"
Then, softly, "This is who I am."
I repeat it to myself so often in random everyday contexts.

@@silasclayton7777 covenant actually has some really good old school xenomorph feels. It's like half Prometheus half Alien. I like it better than Prometheus, despite what they did to Shaws character
Why didn't it make sense?
What pissed me off was that virtually all of the mysteries in Prometheus like why the Engineers wanted to kill humanity (unless you believe the Space Jesus theory) ultimately amounted to nothing because Alien: Covenant pretty much threw that out the window.
After I saw Prometheus, I couldn't wait for Covenant to come out to get answers. Then, well, like you said, we got almost nothing. I can't believe they put such little consideration into audience anticipation
Ask any artist why they trash their own painting and paint over it, or why a sculptor would destroy their own sculpture...because sometimes the things we make don't live up to our visions and expectations. As an artist, I completely understand this.
That's why we don't watch Covenant.
Covenant was made for all the people who complained about Prometheus not being just another Alien movie.
It doesn't though. The Engineer home world never shows up, as they look less like Engineers and more like humans.

While I can agree with what you're making light of, there is no denying that some people with a positive attitude do get better. You can ask just about any doctor about anyone going into some medical situation while being super depressed, are likely going to have complications or negative outcomes as opposed to somebody going in with a cheerful positive attitude. They've done lots of study on that and it does make a big difference
Many doctors, scientists and physicians believe in religions, so I didn’t find that response in the film particularly jarring 🤷🏼♂️

People are looking at it wrong. Its an alien movie therefore the protagonist is a Riply analog. Nope, the real protagonist is David. The creation who met his creators as his creators met their own creators. All the other characters look stupid because that's how David sees them.

I actually like the film. The production design was impeccable. Yes the characters made some poor choices but it was definitely much better than alien covenant.

Agreed. It still remains a favourite of mine. However the absurd actions of many of the characters is hard to overlook.
Prometheus is just as stupid as Covenant
I do like the part when the captain and his crew go out like soldiers. Like when a guy said if you think the bets off you have another thing coming, the other crew member says you can pay me on the other side.
This movie had so much potential, and that potential was squandered. Its still a beautiful looking, well acted film, but it could have truly been great.

Scott lost sight of what is required in a horror film, and ended up making a tragedy, in every sense of the word. A tragedy with more plot holes than plot. He wanted to have Ripley's head ripped off by the xenomorph in the original Alien, but was stopped by the studio. Looks like he did not learn that lesson when he killed off Shaw. He's made some of the best films ever, but it looks like he's lost his touch.
Its been lost since he chose to do Robin Hood.
I know this film has a mixed reception by fans of the Alien Franchise, I consider it to be a guilty pleasure from visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott.

You're confused how squid baby grew to such a size although we see the xenomorph grow without any food source as well.

It's covered in one of the books. How the xeno is essentially 'dehydrated' at birth and a crystalline structure that can 'unfold.'

This is the clearest and well thought through exploration of what went wrong (and what went right) with Prometheus. Thank you for making explicit much of what I was feeling about this film, but couldn’t quite get out in words myself.
This movie really does feel like it was written day by day, with rewrites at lunch.
Damin Lindelof was the writer of tge script. See Lost for example b of his method of miving a plot along.
Is that bad? Writing does take time.

I'd like to know how the 2 guys got lost in the ship when one of them had just made a map of it
It's really a simple reason. The script said so.
I'd like to think there was a reason why that happened, maybe the map eas destroyed or because dude was high and couldn't read the map. Sadly, neither was true and it was done to eliminate characters and introduce a zombie.
Maybe the data transmitted directly to the ship. I don’t remember seeing any maps in any of the suits, only the display on the ship

@@LifesGuardian Sorry but you are misremembering the movie. The probes were take from the guys backpack two by two and after the they cut to the image forming on the deck.
They did not have the map on themselves.
In the novelization it's stated that Vickers wanted the expedition to fail, so she hired a bunch of bumbling idiots to be part of the crew. The reason why they act like idiots, it's because they genuinely are.
I actually like Prometheus. As a kind of stand alone. I don´t count it to the alien movies though.
I see it as an expanded universe. Xenomorphs exist, and that’s all.
He still destroyed the mystery of the space jockeys.

What's really sad is, I really wanted a follow up on these engineers...that part of the film was what really got my attention.
I thought the concept of exploring our creators and the creators of life, as well as the reasoning behind it as well as many historical events such as the creation of the pyramids, etc was extremely cool
I actually really like the name Prometheus for the ship and it makes sense to me. Prometheus was known as the greatest friend to mankind and it's likely that in their naivety, this is what they expected to find from 'the invitation'.
Honestly I feel like this was the beginning of the end for the ALIEN series, and we'll most likely won't get the third prequel film any time in the distant future.
Nah hold faith fam, Disney bought the rights and the marvel produced comics have been promising... movies are in the works

@@DinoDave150 Alien ultimately, is a stalker movie; once we know who the stalker is - the game is up. Aliens was a welcome alternative - but that was essentially IT. I liked Prometheus, because it prolonged the story, and changed the narrative, thus giving the series a fresh impetus...shame they lost their nerve and screwed up.
@@taykitrleevitt4314 I would have given credit where credit was due if they had just stuck to their guns and made their own thing that just so happens to be set in the Alien universe... But then Covenant came along and completely atom bombed any remaining goodwill people had for this series.

My favorite part of this moving and one that follows is the character David and how well he's played
That squid baby thing's only purpose was to provide plot protection for Shaw because the only thing it did was kill the Engineer. Without squid baby, the Engineer would have ripped Shaw to pieces as he did with the others.
I was always so intrigued by the lore of this story. Sucks that they couldnt give it a satisfying origin that made sense.
With how great Ridley Scott can be, this movie has to make you appreciate the first 2 Alien's. So much can go wrong, yet even more must go right to catch that lightning in the bottle.
Ridley used to be great, now hes just a senile old man, Denis Villeneuve kicked him off set of blade runner 2049 due to him endlessly rambling off pointlessly. At least he is still a fantastic cinematographer, prometheus is a beautiful looking film

So when Ridley Scott said Prometheus had the DNA of Alien I guess what he really meant is that they just decided to reuse Giger's designs. Then they brought out that trailer edited to be like the original Alien trailer with the same sound effects. This film was just a complete blue balls experience.
The scene where David finds the navigation room and marvels at the interstellar map only for to unexpectedly turn off leaving him confused and disappointed...that's Prometheus in a nutshell

You do a great job discussing the issues with Prometheus, putting a concise voice to it instead of the endless conjecture out there. As a long time fan of your channel, it's clear that you have a great appreciation for the Alien films. Its release promised a revival that included the original master, Ridley Scott himself. But it ultimately did little to update and add to the franchise except for spawning questions and its more disappointing sequel. It did however give us a fantastic performance by Michael Fassbender, which makes it worth watching if you are a fan of his.

@@gryphonlaw2138 I won't lie and say I've seen every movie so I won't argue small details like how the Beings created man because your right about that and how shit got funky and boom aliens happened but let's be honest it took the director of the movie to confirm that the movie took place in the aliens universe and was a prequel at that. I mean come on, if the movie couldn't do a well enough job to convey that it was an aliens movie then you done messed up when you have to have an outside source tell you otherwise.

As you pointed out, the crew of the Nostromo were a little stupid but human when they wanted to break quarantine with Kane, but Ellen overrode them and maintained it until Ash overrides her and let's them onboard. Not for a stupid reason either, but because that was his mission.
When I first saw Prometheus in theaters, my reaction was the same as Krusty the Clown’s when he saw the “Worker and Parasite” cartoon.
I actually enjoy Prometheus as a movie, just not as an Alien movie. The blonde chick running in a straight line does still kinda grinds my gears still to this day though.

What always struck me as odd was Peter Wayland was seeking knowledge from the creators, but he created David a near life-like human. He was chasing the wrong vision. To me the story would have been more interesting with Peter the Creator and David the Android. Because the mini promotional clips for the film was better than the film, lol. Nice video Sir.

Basic takeaway: pretty pictures, minimally thought provoking plot, silly characters, only 1 decent actor (Michael Fassbender), supernaturally disappointing mythos integration.

I love this movie so much and I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed by a sequel than I was with Alien: Covenant. 😢
I just realised, do you think David wanted Elizabeth to go back to Earth all along near the end, I can't help but think he wanted to drop the payload on Earth himself instead but was forced to do it on the other planet in Covenant?
This review is great. I swear I did not leave this film as any kind of "Prometheus" fan, but I've seen the thing at least five times. Ridley is hit and miss for me, but when I check out of the story and the characters, EVERY TIME, there is an absolutely beautiful set, design elements and cinematography to look at. I am fascinated with the look and design of the Engineers. Part of the story with David endlessly watching and modeling his look on "Lawrence" was that Ridley had wanted to cast Peter O'Toole as Weyland, but he was too ill to take the role.
And this: THANK YOU for your comments regarding Shaw's "Emergency C-Section" (which it can't perform, for your stated reasons, and yet is equipped with obstetrical forceps.) I have HAD this surgery due to tumors and some cancer that decided to also move in. (This year I am a 20 year survivor). And I sent up the "I CALL NO WAY!" flare when we hit this scene, I assure you neither Ridley NOR John Spaihts (whose work I often enjoy) and then came Damon Lindelof (whose heavy-handed fingerprints are all OVER this film, I loathe his writing, and thereby I will hazard a guess that the change was in his rewrite) ... have NEVER met a woman who has just received a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy and is still in the Post Surgical Recovery Phase. I do not care how advanced medical procedures have advanced, or the existence of state of the art ("Don't touch that!") surgical pods are in the latter part of this century. Human anatomy HAS NOT CHANGED and this ENTIRE film is about "Who ARE our makers" and "Who Watches The Watchmen". It is about the DISCOVERY of HUMAN design and the exploration of Intelligent Design.
This particular surgery, involves an abdominal incision which is either vertical or horizontal. Muscles, ligaments and blood vessels are all detached from the (trying to not be too graphic or offensive here) as 'organ in question' is completely removed, this ALSO involves an internal procedure that a surgical pod calibrated "only for men" (booo) would not have been possible to perform as it requires a reconstruction procedure, closed with precision and internal sutures. I ASSURE you, no upper grade pain killers could get you LITERALLY up and running, the fact that the incision is closed with staples, etc. proves that abdominal human anatomy and its surgical area has NOT changed by the 2090s. You are not going to just 'hop right up' after that last staple, and with a new gash in your lower abdomen you have severed nerves which take over a year to reconnect, and yes you are convinced that the first time you stand, your guts will spill onto the floor.
There is NO running, there is no BENDING, there is no COMPRESSION of this incision and NO a jack tight EVA suit is not going to fix it. Recovery from this surgery is commonly six to eight weeks. It's true. Ten days after, I was able to make short trips, but a walk through a store rapidly involved a 15 minute sit, in order to stand again and leave. Three weeks in, I could not walk a regular city block. You learn to sleep near sources of entertainment and have a small cooler with some 'drinks and snackies'. You are NOT going to be outrunning a rolling spacecraft, fighting off Engineers, or packing up and lowering David to head off to Planet 4.
But for some weird reason, largely the beautiful design of the Engineers, Idris Elba (always fun to stare at), Iceland, and the nod to root languages by way of Proto-Indian-European (and yeah, you nailed that too) simply fascinate me. "Derelict" a fan edit of "Prometheus" combined to "Alien", color dropped to black and white and runs at three hours, is superb, the overlap when they wake the Engineers was spectacular. Find it if you can.
I remain the Girl Who Loves Horror and Monsters, I love this franchise because since its introduction it has always been a closely written honor of women. What we will do when we fight. When we take command. And when our worst opponent is another female who is just as determined to defend her offspring as Ellen Ripley is to save Newt and redeem her broken promises to her lost daughter. "Alien" and its successors have always been about how deadly the female of the species can be, and I've watched the dawning expression of several "Alien/Xenomorph" fans when presented with this reality. It's the ultimate Chick Flick. Having said that, I really want a version of "Covenent" that includes Mark Watney (who could absolutely tell you why wheat is growing on 'Swing By For Repairs Planet on Way to Origae-6") and Rick Martinez running and screaming like little girls at "WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS?!" Which they consistently kill completely by accident, especially when fleeing full bore in the rover. I would never NOT watch this and stand up and cheer for the first inadvertent Alien comedy utterly comprised by the horrified escape attempts of Watney and Martinez. Honestly, I would love it. Your break down and your story holes are valid and your review is great. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for singling out the absurdity of the Surgical Pod.
On a side note I'd be very pissed if I spent years loving a series of films about an alien only to be disappointed to know its not truly an alien but some man made thing by a man made thing.

I enjoyed both movies. I'm a very Avid aliens fan, and just because it had plotholes didn't mean that it wasn't entertaining. I like to use this lyric from one of my favorite TV shows for when I go and see movies.

I actually really enjoyed Shaw and was excited to see her character in the next installment but when they killed her off, re-started with other characters and barely gave them any depth, i was so disappointed.
I really liked Prometheus and I think reacting to the criticism made them changed Covenant, which is a shame I really want more of the Engineers

I consider Prometheus and covenant as an alternate universe to the alien verse
Such a beautiful mess. I have to admit that I do really enjoy watching it. It's such a missed opportunity because with a few small changes to to fix plot holes and and dumb character decisions, it could have been a masterpiece and the perfect launching point for another Alien Trilogy.

The concept of the deacon, was merely meant to showcase the effect that the black goo had on organisms, and how the Xenomorph came to be. It wasn't meant to say that this was the first xeno. It was only meant to show how a new strains would begin.
To my understanding, is was meant to work like this. A small amount of infection changed the host's reproductive system. In the case of fertilizers such as a male, the code of their seed is rebuilt, and their sex drive is increased. When the infected sperm comes into contact with a ovum, it uses the egg to start rapid cellular division.
At this stage, the developing organism is still largely based upon the genetic code found in the black goo itself, only borrow the most basic genetic material from either host at this point, hence the squid like appearance and lack of mammalian features.
Cellular division would continue unabated, because aliens and stuff.
This new lifeform would then seek out a living organism that may or may not be genetically related to the original host species.
But implanting the embryo into a fresh host, a form more suitable to the local environment is grown.
By "cross breading" with multiple species, the Xenomorph strain would eventually be developed.
Face huggers are more closely related to the original code found in the goo which is why they look nothing like a Xenomorph. They carry the genetic information of every host that this strain had grown from like a family tree of sorts. They take the most desirable features of past hosts and splicing them with the new building blocks found in a new host species.
Since the deacon was the first developed life form for this strain, and given so little genetic information in which to be based off, it was underdeveloped and very crude in design.
Sadly not many people could grasp this concept, so Covenant went another route which nuked the entire franchise in a single blast.

Absolutely great vid. The opening was perfect. I’m always so happy when people that I highly respect have similar opinions to my own on topics that are important to me. It’s refreshing to know that others out there realize that Prometheus wasn’t deep-it just sucked. I almost walked out of the theater when they took off their helmets, then the guy in charge of mapping got lost and the guy in charge of aliens wanted to touch and play with the snake. Somebody actually wrote these things down on paper and everyone who read it thought it was a great idea. Oh yeah and the captain said i’ll come pick you up in the morning as he casually was playing music and then went to have sex. Any real captain would literally have nothing else on his mind but getting his men back and would organize shifts to keep people awake by the COM‘s and WeatherStation in order to constantly check on his man and continually find a window to get back to them. I can go on forever about this dumb freaking movie but I think you get my point.
You covered many other complaints that I had, particularly issues around scientific inaccuracies. I always hate when writers and producers in Hollywood dumb down movies for the audience. One of the worst lines that my wife and I make fun of in every movie is when somebody replies to a scientist and says “yeah but could you say that in English?” But we’re liberal progressive independent science lovers so we hate stuff like that. A great example of a movie that refused to dumb down for the audience and also happens to be the greatest time travel movie ever made is the independent film called Primer. The writer and actor in this movie refused to dumb down the science for the audience and it worked. By the way Primer is available for free on TH-cam right now.

Aliens is such a awesome movie. I still watch it annually. They should just forget about these movies and remake the old ones beat for beat.
