  • We're looking at Ford's compact crossover cousins and how the new 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands compares to the top-end 2021 Ford Escape Titanium AWD on this episode of TestDrive Showdown.

    We want to thank Yergeau Ford here in Acton Vale, Québec for letting us feature their 2021 Ford Escape Titanium AWD in this episode of TestDrive Showdown. They have a wide selection of new and Certified Pre-Owned Ford vehicles, as well as a great service and parts department. In fact this is where I bring my own 2006 Ford Focus ZXW for service. For more information about Yergeau Ford visit their website here: www.yergeaufor...
    Ford announced the new Bronco family of crossovers and SUVs last year, but the first to arrive on the market is this crossover Bronco Sport. The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands is the top-end off-road ready trim for the Bronco Sport and sits on the same Ford C2 compact crossover platform as the Escape, so naturally we wanted to see how these two vehicles compare to one another. The 2021 Ford Escape Titanium AWD we have is also the fully-loaded trim for this compact crossover, including the extra packages available to add all the feature to it. Both are similarly priced and similarly equipped.
    On our Showdown we discuss the basic mechanical differences between these two vehicles, and how they affect your experiences on and off the road. We also go over the differences with the engines and transmissions, both use the same 2.0L EcoBoost inline 4 cylinder engine, but the Bronco is rated at 277 lb-ft of torque, and the Escape at 280 lb-ft of torque. Both use an 8 speed automatic transmission with AWD. We discuss and show the differences in both interior and exterior vehicle dimensions including the length, width, height, and wheelbase, along with interior specs such as front and rear headroom, front and rear legroom, and cargo capacity.
    We then take the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands on a real-world road test to talk about the individual styling of this crossover, the interior design and layout, the feature differences between it and the Escape, and our overall impressions of this crossover. We go over some of the reasons why buyers might want to pay the $1,900 CAD premium over the Escape for the Bronco Sport including the 100+ factory approved accessories available for outdoors enthusiasts. We also discuss the useable interior space on the Bronco despite being smaller on paper.
    We jump into the 2021 Ford Escape Titanium AWD and take it on the same route during our dive to talk about it's styling and design, along with some of the feature differences on this compact consumer crossover. We talk about the functionality of the interior of the Escape along with some of the reasons we'd consider this crossover over the Bronco Sport, and what makes it stand out for buyers looking in this segment. We wrap up our Showdown with our final thoughts on both vehicles, which one we'd take and why, and what we hope to see for the future of the Bronco family.

    Bronco sport it's got more character into it and the heritage thing plus it doesn't look like anything out there hence the crossovers are looking similar somehow nowadays.. Thanks for this great showdown mate I enjoyed it

      It's a BOX, and less roomy than the Escape. Besides it somewhat looks like a Jeep Renegade, so it does look like something out there 🤫

      I’ve ridden both, the Escape drives like garbage. Twitchy, awkward and the turn range is poor. Also, it’s incredibly hard to see over the hood. The windshield is tiny, the crossbars get in the way of being able to turn your head when backing out, the seat doesn’t raise high enough to see over the hood, and if it does you hit your head against the ceiling (I’m 5’4 and it was horrible to try and get over seeing the stupid hood). The styling is cool, I admit and I originally wanted one when they came out, but driving one? Do not suggest at any trim level. Bronco Sport has a lot more control and I use the Eco mode constantly so I don’t get any twitch when I’m driving somewhere.
      To be fair to both, i am coming from an 09 Escape Hybrid, so the pedals in the new Escapes/Bronco are bizzare to me to say the least, but at least in the Bronco I am not straining and struggling to even see over the hood of the vehicle and I get a panoramic view of everything near me.

    The 2 liter in these is one of my favorites with very smooth power delivery. But it can be thirsty and the smooth shape and ride height of the escape will provide better fuel economy. Odd that Ford is not optioning the pretty good hybrid or plug in hybrid option in the Bronco as the 3 cylinder doesn’t help much with economy. The upcoming Maverick does and that will be a huge draw as gas prices climb and electrification continues. Either way Ford is killing it with this line up. We like the looks of the escape. Plop BMW grill and badges and wheels on it and everyone would be oohing and ahhing. But yea, that Bronco Sport is just charming. We also found the steering feel in the Escape was its Achilles heel.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope Ford will offer more electrified options sooner rather than later, perhaps they're holding off on this to get people in the door then offer an incentive to trade in in a few years with new engine options.

    Excellent comparison. One looks happy and friendly. The other looks angry and aggressive. Can't help but think that Aston Martin front end and those Porsche quad headlamps would look really good on something that isn't a crossover.

    • @PRNTestDrive

    Great video. The Bronco is what I wished the Escape would have been. Aggressive, edgy, and outdoorsy instead of sleek and suburban with a hint of attitude. The Escape update was much needed, but body wise missed the mark. That being said I love my Escape for fuel economy but am updating to the more aggressive Bronco.

      I think a lot of people feel the same way you do, the Bronco Sport seems to be a popular option for a lot of people, and was a smart move on Ford’s part. It wouldn’t surprise me if the escape phased out.

  • @cuz129

    We bought the Badlands Bronco Sport. Its very fast, very off road capable and turns heads anywhere you go. The Escape won't get a second look from anyone because it looks just like every other crossover. Calling the Escape a SUV is kind of a stretch since it has virtually no off road capability. With the clutch lockers on the rear the Sport is very close to a true four wheel drive vehicle. If you are kid hauling on paved roads the Escape is probably the way to go. If you like to head to the woods or the mountains on the weekend it is a no brainer. The Bronco Sport is the only choice.

    • @RemcoAlexanderPhD

      That gas mileage though...I love the woods and the mountains but I would also like to preserve them for future generations. That's why I probably end up with the Escape Hybrid, eventhough I like the looks of the Bronco Sport better.

    Ford dropped the ball on the towing. My little ecosport is rated at 2k towing. Almost as much as the Bronco sport. They should have offered the same tow package as the escape. If you want to tow a side by side you have to move up to a maverick with the 4k package or a ranger.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More towing would be good considering this is meant for the outdoorsy person who may want to have a trailer.

    • @rivitraven
      @rivitraven 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The lack of tow power can be contributed to a couple things, namely the 3 cylinder engine just isn't meant to tow. And the 4 cylinder in the badlands actually don't offer any true benefits and can only pull an extra 200 in tow and the max payload is about 150 pounds lighter. The fuel mileage with the larger engine is also much lower. A 6 cylinder could be installed but it would drastically change the shape of the hood, front, and more. It just wasn't an option with the current designs and probably ran into safety problems as well. One of the reasons the bronco sport is beloved so much is for it's off-road capability because its entering and exiting angles are very wide and the escape would just bottom out in a heartbeat, the clutching and computer algorithms for each goat mode in the bronco sport help a lot when off-roading. The suspension is also different from the escape in all trim levels. You also sit much higher in the bronco sport which is advantageous because you can see over most other vehicles and you now have more freedom to make decisions based off of the traffic situation you can now see ahead of you which is a godsend.

    • @spyder000069
      @spyder000069 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rivitraven The bronco sport is the same platform as the ford maverick and escape. The 2.0 in the BS Badlands is just as capable and even has the lower gear ratio differentials that would match the maverick 4k package but the BS is missing the additional cooling. It would only need stiffer suspension and the trans cooler to be on par with the maverick 4k tow (there may be a wheelbase difference). Currently the badlands is more equivalent to a maverick tremor which also has reduced tow capacity. Overall I believe they intentionally did not offer a higher tow capacity because they didn't want it to compete with existing escape/maverick sales. I do like the bronco sport looks and overall specs but that was the one issue that has kept me from purchasing one. The maverick was also high on the list but in my location the surrounding dealers still have $2-5K markup over msrp and they are still not widely available although I hear that is changing in other parts of the country.
