      When using nitrifying bacteria and photosynthesis bacteria How long I should wait to change water ?

      Hey how do you add salt if you don’t do water changes? Like if salinity drops what do you do?

    You can stay with no skimmer if thats your poison. Just use an ATS and some Macro Algae in the sump lit by a powerful LED light like the Kessil 380. In 20 years of reefing I have never used a skimmer.

      ReefEden I’m mostly freshwater and in freshwater algae and plants eat nitrate I’m assuming saltwater species of algae do the same thing?

    • @GazuntaiWorld
      @GazuntaiWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aquariums With Ty Yes they do the same thing, consume Nitrates, Phosphates and such.
      The green ones are the variety mostly used because they have a faster growth rate than the red/brown variety.
      I have Ulva in my Algae turf scrubber and a mixture of Chaeto/Ulva in my sump.
      My display tank has six or seven variety of the Red algae and some slow growing greens

    If you have enough macroalges you don't need a filter or skimmer.
    You essentially have something you shouldn't change.

    im confused....i thought the point of the videos was to say you can have a no skimmer or water change and still have a great looking tank. I think everyone knows you can have a tank with no water changes or skimmer and it looks like crap.

    Do you still have ur red sea tank? I´m worried about the cabinet side panel bending, the design doesn´t seem to be able to fully support the longest side

    There is no point of having a skimmer on a 20 gal. aquarium and most nano tanks for that matter. The skimmers made for those tanks are mediocre at best and you are generally having to do smaller more frequent water changes anyway on nano tanks, taking away any point to having one. Doing 10-15% weekly water changes on a nano is easy as you are talking about a few gallons of water.

    I like how the GSP is covered over the branch. I would consider eradicating it from those other spots though. I had some GSP that started appearing elsewhere and it almost took over the tank.

    • @PuffDaddyReef
      @PuffDaddyReef  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good advice. I'll keep it in one place and nuke the rest. It is actually a rare morph of branching GSP. It just grows upward all by itself and is not covering any branches.

    Did without skimmer for yrs however you do need to do a small water change every now and than. Tank still looks nice red sea skimmer is something I wanted till I seen the new maxspect duo skimmer and that is a beast so maybe you should hold off till you research it or are you going red sea all the way?

    I’ve found that if you don’t have time to really put into your tank, it’s just a matter of time before you tare it down. Reef tanks are one of those things you need to put TLC into them, or else they just become a expense.

    Believe it or not but when I don't do water changes, my tank tends to thrive. I haven't done a water change in 6 months and my 90G reef is basically self sustaining. (Whenever I do water changes, something goes wrong lol)

    • @TheTrevor40
      @TheTrevor40 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      QuarterBach you could possibly be doing water changes wrong? Salinity, temp, AlK could all be off and cause issues. Just a thought.

    Does this mean that once you get by 12-18 months you don’t need skimmers? Maybe we only need to rent them for a year or two?

    • @PuffDaddyReef
      @PuffDaddyReef  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on how much you feed and the size of your water changes. They are optional but seeking the funk that my new skimmer just pulled out has convinced me to keep it on.

    Great update! Suggestion, I bought a long tong off of amazon and I used it quite often to pick things up in the tank without dipping my hands in the tank. As for corals suggestion, not sure if you are a fan of cyphastrea, favias, chalices...I love these corals that helps encrust and covers the shape of the rock work. For example, whatever my rock shape is, I just love how the cyphastreas and favias, covers and adopts the shape of the rocks. Great tank you have buddy and already looking forward to the next video.

    Question for you my man! Would I be able to keep a small shark (bamboo or epaulette) in a 180 red sea reefer? Ive heard that they require a whole lot of filtration and skimmer are absolutely necessary and they can raise your electric bill A LOT. But you seem to have a shark plus more in that tank with no skimmer and water changes like the savage that you are. Any tips/advice?

    • @ToneyDouglas23
      @ToneyDouglas23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *180 gallon red sea

    • @PuffDaddyReef
      @PuffDaddyReef  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      180 gallon in the display is the minimum for an epaulette. I picked epaulettes because they have swim a little less than bamboos and have nice coloration. My tank is undersized so I will need to up in 2 years probably. Ideally you would want a little more at full size but they really are not all that active. Here is the deal, most people get one shark and then want another, or decide they should stock the tank with other high bioload fish (eels, rays, large triggers, harlequin tusks, and groupers). Avoid that urge at all cost. Pick one high bioload fish (mr. shark) and stick with medium reef fish for the rest and you should do ok. You will need a skimmer eventually. Thanks for your interest! Follow along and we shall se how he does as he grows!

    • @ToneyDouglas23
      @ToneyDouglas23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Puff Daddy Reef just subbed! One more question. I literally just want one shark. That will be the only inhabitant of my tank. Lets say I spend $5000 on the tank and all that and then $500 on the shark itself, will the maintenance really be just as costly? Ive heard stories that peoples electric bills double and triple, along with the water bill. A couple hundred+ on maintenance a month is expected but did you notice your bills jack up since you set that all up or not a huge difference?

  • @kenpacheco4426
    @kenpacheco4426 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great stuff. I like that you kept it real. Life happens and yes, sometimes our tanks take the hit. I had the same experience. My bioload is heavy as I have lots of large tangs on my 750xxl. My small eshopps skimmer just wasn't cutting it. So I just upgraded to the Red Sea 900 skimmer as well. In just 3 days I've noticed my Cyano slowly disappearing. On a side note my wife doesnt run a skimmer on her 20 gallon red sea nano. Only 2 clowns in that and it looks great. Just 5 gallon water changes every 2 weeks.

    • @PuffDaddyReef
      @PuffDaddyReef  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the support! I am glad you like the skimmer. I am pretty happy with it so far (review next week). The nice thing about nano tanks is water changes are so easy. Contrary to popular belief, bigger isn't always easier. But it is a lot of fun to have a big tank to load up with dream fish!
