  • After my first day in Hanoi, Vietnam in 5 years where I headed out on the ultimate Bún Chả tour of Hanoi City with no other than ‪@PaddyDoyle.‬ I decided that I needed to head back out for a midnight snack to get an excellent pho in Hanoi Old Quarter at Phở Huy 67.
Phở Huy 67 is one of the most popular late-night pho shops in Hanoi
I'm amazed that you can get this level of quality in a pho at gone 12 am in Hanoi, this is Vietnamese Street Food at its finest!

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this TH-cam channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I think it's the signature between South and North. People focus on the both with simple noodle and beef in the North, while the others focus on marterial and make it a buffet of flavor with mixing spice in the South. Like two face of the coin, it make Pho easy to take by many way, but not chance itself spirit

There used to be a VERY popular late night pho vendor in the old quarter, where I usually have to wait for like an hour in line. But the taste is pretty much the pho I had growing up which is incredible. They moved to 56 Nguyen Sieu street so if you're staying for awhile then you can go there. The owner is a really nice lady who likes to do things herself hence the wait

I marked off the ones I’ve seen or heard you ate or something similar, but try these:
*1. Bun cha (famously eaten by Bourdain and Obama) - best eaten in Hanoi or northern Vietnam
    2. Com tam (grilled pork and broken rice dish) - make sure to get the one that comes with fried egg, egg load/casserole, pork skin, pickled veggies, etc., and douse it all in the flavored fish sauce (nuoc cham). This can be found best in southern Vietnam (ask Max McFarlin for recommendations)
*3. Banh mi - a million iterations…and no, they all don’t come with pate!
*4. Nem or cha gio (fried spring rolls), eat it with all the herbs, rice vermicelli, and dipped in flavored fish sauce
    5. Bun bo Hue (pho’s spicier cousin)
    6. Bun rieu
    7. Banh cuon
    8. Banh xeo - eat it with all the herbs/veggies and dipped. Best eaten in the central regions or south.
    9. Cao lau - best eaten in the central region or Hoi An
    10. Hu tieu
    11. Bot chien (Max McFarlin had a good video on this recently)
    12. Bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew that you dip your baguette in)
*13. Bo ne (steak and eggs equivalent)
*14. Bun thit nuong (all iterations, best with the grilled lemongrass pork, but all grilled pork or even chicken versions are super good), douse everything in flavored fish sauce and mix well before eating
    15. Bo la lot
    16. Ca ri ga (chicken curry, the kind where you use the baguette to dip)
    17. Banh trang tron (ask Max for a recommendation of the best)
    18. Mi quang - eat it in the central region
    19. Banh khot - eat it down south
    20. The fried sweet potato with shrimp on it that you wrap in herbs and veggies and dipped
    21. Anything that’s grilled and wrapped in herbs and dipped
    22. Anything with lemongrass in it or skewered with lemongrass (like the flavored ground shrimp or ground pork that’s grilled)
    23. Go to Vietnam for this, but try the snail restaurants that serve snails, oysters, clams, etc. Snails in coconut sauce, oysters/clams with scallion oil and peanuts, etc. AMAZING!!!
    24. Many, many, MANY more…just ask around and don’t be shy about asking the locals or shop owners how to eat it properly.
    25. Go on food tours. Use the guide Flora and Note used in Hanoi. Or do a food tour in Hoi An with the guide that Steph and Pete used (my favorite guide of the ones I’ve seen in Vietnam…knowledgeable and showed great variety of foods). Hit up Hai Phong for a food tour since a ton of Hanoians go there specifically for the food tours since their food is supposed to be really great.

56 Dao Tan in Ba Dinh District close to Australian embassy/lotte building (better than the ly quoc su in the old quarter). Hanoi Pho is the best
1 x Pho Bo (Tai chin)
    1 x Tra da
    2 x fried breadsticks.
Also try "la Viet coffee". They have 3 locations and offer an awesome vibe. Cafe Yen (184 quan Thanh) is the most famous for Hanoi people on Saturday mornings. It gets busy and you have to order, pay and wait with a ticket number.

Not "faw", but more like "fuh" or rather "fuh-uh" but you have to go up a little on the "uh" part and slide it in smoothly vs making two syllables of it. A lot of Vietnamese words, although one syllable in nature, may go up and down like a rollercoaster.

I'm Lao and I walked into this Vietnam store on accident close to 30 years ago in the states and I got a very unpleasant greeting. The exact words were "you Lao, you get out". So I will not be surprised if there are some people there that still holds grudges.
