Baling some hay in East Tn. We’re using a Ford 601 and a David Brown 990 pulling New Holland hay equipment. Also using some of our Ford trucks to haul the hay.
Oh what memories this brings back of the 60's. 70's & 80's baling with MF135 then later with a MF165 with multipower and New Holland baler. This was true farming in those days, just pure hard work.
Mf165 my old favourite, contract baling with an old star baler back in '87. West Wales, very hot summer no cab. We used to row up and turn the hay with an acrobat ground operated hay bob.
This video brings my memories helping my uncle for two summers, from ground , wagon and barn(barn work was worse, hot, dusty, and sweaty.) then done for the day, going to creek cleaning up. I miss youth work!! 🚜🚜🚜🚜Bless all 🧑🌾🧑🌾🧑🌾🧑🌾farmers to feed US 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Fantastic tractor and baler, we ran New Holland balers from the the 1950’s till the late 90’s when big balers eventually took over, 25 to 30 thousand bales a year of hay and straw we used to make, hard work because we farm in England and some of the bales were heavy because the weather wasn’t always good for baling and we had to rush the hay on if the weather was about to break, but this video is great because it reminds me of how much easier it was when the weather and machines were in harmony, well done, that David Brown and New Holland baler are in superb condition, looks as if they have just left the factory, thank you for sharing it with us.
Great video, really enjoy the baleing videos. I can smell it through the screen lol. We never baled hay on our homestead but I helped a friend bale on his farm when we were in high school, and I miss it
I used a side delivery rake for years back in the 70's and then for a while in the late 90's and early 2000's. My son and I have been using a V rake for the past 20 years and they both have their good and bad points. I do miss using the old rakes and I think your New Holland baler is awesome, makes a great bale of hay, never used one but I've always admired them. After running tractors and doing hay for over 50 years, my advice would be to get a canopy of some kind and wear a brimmed hat, like your dad, protect yourself! I grew up in Union Co. Tennessee and put up thousands of bales of hay each season. I’m 65 now, but when I was a kid, I thought working in the hay fields was child slave labor. My parents called it an education. Watching your video stirred up lots of good memories of my teenage years. Great video.

Been a couple of decades ago but I ran a New Holland square baler and Vermeer round baler at my place. Good to me. Also used a ground driven 8 wheel V rake.9' New Holland sickle bar mower.Last year I baled I put out $8000.00 in fertilizer and it didn't rain for another 3 months. That did it for me....
Hey neighbor , I'm from Bristol TN and that 311 takes me back . I bought a new one in 1984 I think it was . I put over 10k bales a year thru it for several years without any major issues. Pulled it mostly with a 5000 Ford . Just subscribed and checking things out .Good job
Nice video, I rolled all my first cut stuff here in west TN due to broken hand and rolls easier to deal with. But plan on square baling my second cut. Keep up the good work.
Back in the day here in Wisconsin we bailed hay with a wagon hooked onto the back of the bailer and stacked them up on the wagon as they came out the bailer, then towed them off to be unloaded on the second floor of the barn. Had to make sure hay was nice and dry or you might end up burning the barn down because of wet hay....
good looking land never been in you,re area nashville a lot those ol john browns are good little tractorhasnt baled since 97 18600 s cheap operateing my neighbor bought the last 641 workmaster our ford dealer had spent many hrs on that baby cant beat nh balers started out with 76 v4 wisc then jd ihc now 570 but im done it just stays in barn only 18600on counter that thing will eat the hay
Im in nw nc, use a 73 3400 ford to cut and bale. My Grandpas 9n to rake and tedd with. Have a Ford 532 sq baler and a 503 rake. Have a Ford sickle mower too, but the 7ft vicon disc is a lot faster.
Great looking equipement. I run the square baler with a 2030 john deere with a gas engine. When it grunts too much on the push you know to lower the gear.
I agree that not enough hay makes bad bales. But also, too much hay will make bad bales. If the feeder house is over full and the feeder forks are grabbing massive amounts of hay the flakes will be big and inconsistent. Looks like you give it dialed in pretty good though, can’t wait for hay 2024

If your windrow is light on you can improve the bale quality by slightly increasing the bale tightness. Theis helps compensate for the extra plunger movements
If You adjust the back plate in the pick up chamber you can make a good bale on a light crop. Move it ahead for a light crop and back for a heavier crop.
Sorry I had to laugh … 7:27 when you said you need to drop a gear! From my experience it was feeding nicely and one could go a little harder. It expends on how confident you are. 9/10 ‘biscuits’ per bale is an indicator of a good feed.
Your inspiring me to spend some money on vintage gay equipment! I don’t have a farm but lots of bailable land. And my neighbors have animals and are always looking for hay
Really enjoyed your video. I couldn’t see where you talked about the revs and the pot gear you are using. You talked and demoed the ground speed but not the pot revs and gear

I like your 990 DB. I have two 880's and 1972 990. Great tractors! One of the 880's was bought new by my dad in 1966. Great video!
My Dad had 2 David Browns and the hills we have they didn't have good brakes. They were good tractors. Wish I had one now. Good video.

Back in the 1960's as a young boy I watched my dad use a Ford 600 to mow, rake and bale with. It was mostly gray with a small amount of red.
I do the same thing in southern indiana with my Massey Ferguson number 3 baler. It’s a 1965 model but does good. Enjoyed watching your video

To each their own on chain lube but try motorcycle chain lube. Brings back a lot of memories.

I'd have a look at the honk in the feeder arm as it's still there under load and will be causing some damage

I still use my 1971 DB 885 sadly the two stage clutch is stuck these last twenty years been meaning to fix it but you know how it is😂

There is not a dumb use for a piece of equipment on the farm. It needs to be multipurpose.
