    I'm so happy that you're teaching her how to do her hair and keep up with it herself. my mom sadly left us when I was 11 and there was no one to do my hair. I ruined it and ended up cutting it all off at 15. luckily I've learned to like how my hair looks short but I've found out how to keep it healthy now and it's growing back. I'm 18 now so it's taken a while.

    We need to be careful about how we talk about Afro hair type 4 in it’s natural texture in 2020 when it comes to young girls. I saw a video of a tiny little girl saying her hair looks ugly and her dad quickly corrected it by telling her she beautiful and her hair is beautiful.
    There are so many many new and beautiful hairstyles with type 4 hair that don’t involve straightening.
    Twist out, Bantu knots, braid out, buns, crown buns, french braid, loc’s, Afro, single braid/twists, cornrows to name a few.
    You can wear your hair in braids at any age it’s not just a little girl hairstyle. It’s a versatile protective style
    Please be careful about using heat on type 4 hair especially without a heat protectant because it will cause heat damage over time if you do that constantly. I did that in high school and collage and it broke my endz really badly.
    Even the blow dryer is to much heat and tension sometimes.
    If you want her endz to be protected the proven method is to keep them sealed away in a protective style. Basically that means the less you mess with her hair the more it will grow healthy.
    Just speaking from my own experience, you daughter looks lovely.

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Thank you for your comment!! I did not say anything negative about her hair. I tell all my babies they are beautiful. They all love themselves and their hair!! This is my natural girl. If she can wear her Afro every day she would. I have done twist outs etc on her hair. However, they have to get redone every two days. She’s tenderheaded and she will not stand for it. She doesn’t like braids at all. Well more than two. She tried to cornrow and French braid when it’s straight. I did use heat protectant on her hair prior to blow drying. I showed me applying but didn’t mention it. At this time since I am trying to teach her how to shampoo and detangle and keep her hair up by herself she will cause a little damage as she learns and navigates through what she likes and dislikes and that’s ok. We’ve all done it. It’s just hair. It’ll grow right back. I’m here to make sure she doesn’t destroy it! I get everything you are saying though. Thanks for commenting and watching!

      Seven Zen Hair I just want to be clear my comment wasn’t criticism on you at all 🙂, a lot of what I commented was based on my own hair experience. So I just wanted to warn other people too. I saw a few other videos including the one with the little girl before your so I was just saying in general we have to up lift our children. My younger sister is the same she not a fan of braids so I totally get where your coming from. It’s definitely all learning 👍🏾

    I'm an Elementary Teacher in Detroit and I can see the children of cosmetologists a mile away. Over the 15 years of my career it has started to equalize, I mean the cosmo kids are always on point but year after year more and more girls show up in protective styles and their hair overall is longer and healthier. I mentioned this to the assistant principal and she gave credit to a healthy competition between the mothers that benefit the children but I think it's videos like this that take the unknown out of the equation. That's god's work.

    I find the typing system helpful not necessarily for products but to describe my hair and what type of techniques stylists should expect to use and be experienced in before I see them.
    I don't expect everyone to know how to treat my natural hair automatically because they have to learn my individual needs. But what's frustrating is telling a stylist (I've only been to black women mind you) that my hair is very healthy thick 4c and getting a quote and being told yes they do all hair, only to go in and they're completely unprepared with tools they need and act shocked and appalled upon seeing me. At the worst, they look at me and say oh you didn't tell me it was this much (my hair is always shoulder length or shorter) are you sure you don't want a perm etc it's gonna be extra and then they halfheartedly do my hair while constantly complaining about how thick it is. At the best, they praise my hair and talk about how envious other women would be but they still get intimidated because they didn't have the experience with 4c hair that they claimed to. My hair isn't half as difficult as the stigma that comes with the look of it's volume but when I say 4c I want you to understand that you can't come to me with just a spray bottle and some gel, I'm not even asking for that look lol. Your daughter is so lucky to have your knowledge, hands, and support cause for the rest of us it's hard out here finding someone who's really about it! 🙌🏽✊🏽

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup that’s the only reason I use it. I know of a client says she has thick 4c hair I need to book an extra 30-45mins just to be sure. You don’t even know how many women have told me everything you mentioned. It’s sad. I actually love the thick hair better because it’s a nice transformation even if it’s a wet set and they clients are more appreciative because they didn’t have to be the ones to do it lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

  • @nicthommi
    @nicthommi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah, I don't find hair typing to be that helpful either in terms of products, or at least, things people think of as absolutes just aren't. I don't have much trouble finding shampoos or conditioners that do well for me, so that's kind of something a lot of people think is gospel that just isn't my experience. I don't have to detangle. And just getting my hair wet makes me ready to restyle it. I also don't have issues with dryness. Yet I have thick, afro textured hair, which many people assume I spend hours detangling or spent years growing. Since people love to ask me what I do, I have to always add, look, most of what I do isn't what other ppl tell you "works"...

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right!!! Everything doesn’t work the same for everyone. Products or/and techniques are unique to each of us. Sometimes our routines need to change every few weeks cause our hair gets tired of it so the grading to me is really just a description.

      I'm a cosmetologist as well with a twelve yr old and i make sure i keep heat protection and a good leave in conditioner to maintain good healthy hair. I flat iron her hair twice a month using no more than 400 degrees and she has no heat damage.

    Girl... I have 4c hair. Possibly 4d if that was a type. LOL! I have to take ibuprofen b4 I get my hair done. Can't stand when people say I'm tender headed. Yo.. if someone's pulling on your head you lose yiur mind too. People just heavy handed. Lol... I tell hairdressers my type b4 I get there. I won't even go into details about the one that tried to blow dry my hair with a wire brush. Omg.. I spoke to jesus that day. I got up m stopped her. But my one suggestion. Mane n Tail are awesome products. Hairdressers have me bring that detangler. My mom kept my end plaited. If I curled I used end paper. Our ends tangle easily. I'm so happy about all the styles for our hair now. In the pass it was only straightening or relaxing it. I hated that. I have not had a perm in over 20 yrs. I love how you teaching your daughter how to do her hair.

      Lmao I love your personality. I am tenderheaded as well. I cry when my stylist does my hair for me. Like for real tears lol. Because of that I’m super light. My clients fall asleep when I’m doing their hair. I’m going to try mane n tail. I use to use it in my hair when I was younger. I forgot all about them. Thanks for your comment.

    Peppermint oil helps me with my tender scalp. I don't know that she is is 4C. I think you should visit @iamblackgirlcurls instagram digital salon and their facebook page to learn about her curl pattern and how to set it. It doesn't have to be painful. They teach twist outs and wash and goes mainly.

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the resource. I will check them out. I know how to do her hair. I’ve done twist outs and flat twist etc on her hair. I will actually film a few now. She doesn’t like getting her hair done at all. It doesn’t matter how gentle I am. So I’m teaching her to do it herself! Having her learn to style it while straight is easier for her since she has soooo much hair. When she get use to having her hands in it I will teach her wet and natural styling. I didn’t know peppermint oil could help for that. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for watching!

    When my daughter was little she got weekly conditioning treatments had her trims on a schedule and her hair was down her back. When she took over at 12 she knew how to wash, condition, and flat iron her hair. I would have been mortified as a parent to have my daughter out here with broken off edges.

      Seven Zen Hair yes. My daughter couldn’t wrap her hair so she would take a little moisturizer to the ends and hairline put a scarf around bandana style a flexi rod on the end and a bonnet. Easy low maintenance

    Good morning, for Black people there will always be a difference with their hair, skin color, body types, there’s no way around it. Some people call it nappy, coarse, tight curls, curly, and it depends on how it’s worded and where the person is from. Then, there’s people who are not nice and may say rude and awl full things. These are the times we’re living in. The Bronx New York stay Coronavirus free

    Beautiful. Wish I could cut like you. I have the basics still practicing. I need that heating cap though. Going to look for one. Thanks for talking about gels. I believe it dries out my hair as well and cause itches. I’m not using it like I use to as well. Edge controls just feel like gunk I’m my hair as well. So staying away from that a well. Thanks your video is the truth.

      Thank you for such a nice comment. Yes those things can really dry out your edges. I love the Keracare edge tamer. It works well and I haven’t noticed any damage or problems with it. Doesn’t cake up. Keep practicing. It gets easier. Thanks for watching!

    Ok let’s discuss... the affirm can be bought in the beauty supply, second its a certain type of conditioner which is protein. Using a protein conditioner a lot with hair can cause a reverse damage so be careful. Second using excessive heat can lead to head damage no matter what hair texture. Just use google to help further.

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ms. Toni. I purchased it from a professional store. When I checked google I only saw stores that I never heard of had it and I don’t ever steer people to places I’ve never used so instead since it is a professional product I told people to ask their stylist. I have since updated my description to state that avlon has an amazon store. That was yesterday before you saw the video. I never stated to use often and I never stated excessive heat doesn’t damage hair. I only posted what I did for my daughter and my thoughts. So what exactly am I using google for? And what did you want to “discuss”

    • @tonigonzalez2827
      @tonigonzalez2827 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seven Zen Hair basically your using a product saying it works great but in reality this product can cause damage to anyone’s hair, the “discuss”part is if you don’t want to give all pros and cons on a product then don’t period. And using google for anyone including you that needed further information. Have a great day.👍🏾

    • @sevenzenhair67
      @sevenzenhair67  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does work great for me. Anything you use can damage your hair. Everyone is different. All I did was give my opinion. It’s up to people to use or not use. I said what I wanted to say in my video. You realize you don’t have to watch my video right?!! I get plenty of people respectfully giving their thoughts that differ from mine and I love it! I will never understand people like you that go out of their way to be negative.
