I just tried this recipe and OH MY GOODNESS!! I've tried SO many recipe's for chocolate cake, but they always come out having a weird texture, weird flavor, or the batter was liquidy to bake. I decided to give this recipe a shot and I am SO shocked. It tasted EXACTLY like a boxed cake! The texture was amazing, it was so moist. It was both dense and airy and it was very fudgy. I accidentally over-whipped the frosting, but it still tasted good! I halved the recipe and put it into two pans. I ended up baking mine for around 35-40 minutes since the middle was slower to cook. I also made my own buttermilk with milk and vinegar. If you're looking for a PERFECT chocolate cake recipe that tastes like a moist boxed cake, this one is it.

Using "Cake Strips" around my cake pans while they're baking is THE best thing I've done for my cakes. They make the tops of your cakes completely flat so you don't waste cake by trimming the tops and that gives you more cake when you're finished. I ordered mine off Amazon, but I think they are available in the baking section of most stores. Thank for the recipe. I can't wait to try it. Your cake looks absolutely delicious!
Monique, my grandmother and I made this cake last night! My granddaughter is 5 soooooo I wasn't sure how it was going to look my main hope was that it would taste good. OMG! That cake was the bomb! For a serious chocolate lover it is more than satisfying! While the layers were cooling my granddaughter and I made the frosting. Then she took a break to watch cartoons so I hurried up and frosted the cake so it would look half decent. She didn't mind so much that I left her out of that part since she was able to lick the frosting in the bowl. It looked like I bought it from a bakery. Oh one more thing, I was worried that the coffee would throw off the chocolate flavor but it didn't. You can't taste the coffee! This recipe is a keeper!!!🤗😀
@@musze1 i know im a little late but i did instant coffee in mine and it came out beautifulllllll, I suppose one could also do brewed coffee as well, it really is just a matter of getting some coffee in your Chocolate to enhance its flavour regardless of what type of coffee it is! hope this helps.
Nova Summer Hi, I know I might sound silly, but how do I get the right consistency for the plain hot coffee, I added one and a half tablespoons of instant coffee to one and a half cups of boiling hot water. The cake took an hour to bake and wasn’t that moist. I know I’m doing something wrong with the coffee. Or can I just add coffee granules? Please can you help? Thank you
I keep a coffee pod machine in the kitchen, so I'm always Johnny-on- the-Spot with fresh coffee. My question is if everything should be room temp, do you still pour in hot coffee? I just did what I thought was right. Please let us know, this could be the difference between wet moist and pleasingly moist for me🤷♀️
I've made this and this is THE recipe I've been searching for. Full of chocolatey flavor and super moist! I halved the recipe and baked in three 6 inch pans. I've even used it to make a letter cake and it stayed nice and moist (I did brush on a simple syrup to the letter cake to help the sides not dry out). Highly recommend!

I too am a southern cook who does not like to photograph but love to cook. This really is a go to cake for birthdays! Try adding some real Irish cream into the whipped cream. Monique I made this On Sunday to serve last night(Monday) for my husband's birthday party. I baked using square sheet pans and made 2 layers. I also drizzled cold coffee before frosting to make it more moist. It was sooo delicious. Everyone thought I got it from some fancy bakery, everyone kept asking "is this cake really homemade?🤨"😱(My husband's grandma who doesn't really like unhealthy food/junk even had a huge second slice😹) I've never baked a cake so good. The oil instead of butter made so much difference plus buttermilk. Goodness thank you so much!
Monique - OMG! Girl, you are speaking the total truth! I just made this cake and it is the BOMB! I will be making this for everyone ‘s birthday going forward. My lessons learned. A. Keep the number of cups/scoops the same for each cake pan. B. The frosting needs more than 1.33 cups of whipping cream. My little hand mixer almost fried its motor. I also added 1.5 teaspoons of cinnamon to the frosting. Everyone loved the cake! Thank you! Thank you!
I came back just to comment how well this cake turned out. If I could post a picture I would! It was absolutely perfect. It has stayed moist 2 to 3 days later as well. The frosting is just incredible and I highly recommend everybody to use the *dark* cocoa powder instead of regular cocoa powder. It makes all the difference in this recipe and was worth the $3! Tip: If you want nice and even slices, refrigerate the cake for a bit and warm up the knife before cutting. It was worth the effort because of the great layers

I made this cake today and it’s that deep chocolate Matilda cake...oh my God it’s soooo good! Of course it went easier for me because I used my stand mixer 😏. I only used a 32 oz bag of powder sugar and 1 1/4 Cup of heavy cream for the frosting and it’s perfect. I totally recommend it! 🥰

At the request of a dear friend, I made this cake for the FIRST time two weeks ago (and yes, I used the Hershey's cocoa powder 😏), and it was SOOOO GOOD. Mind you, I gained back ALL the weight that I lost after having one tiny slice 😀 (my friend is a personal trainer who's also a chocoholic). I just made this cake just took it out the oven I used two 9inch pans and had to leave mines in the oven maybe 12-15mins longer than you did cause it was still giggly I’m assuming it’s because you separated yours in 3 pans I did two. But it smells so good & tastes like a chocolate brownie cake I love it ! Im going to attempt to decorate the cake …. Key word attempt. & add some gold to it for a pop of color ! Okay, just made this yesterday and trying it today. @divas, amazing job on the recipe, super yummy. One thing I noticed, is the amount of batter per pan, I think you mentioned 2 cups per pan, but yesterday, it turned out I did 3 cups per pan. I was worried at first, as I thought I may be added too much of some ingredient, but after checking and checking, I did it correctly. Outside of that, this is a great cake 👍

I'm so late with this comment... I made used this cake recipe for my son's birthday cake in August and it was AH-MAZING!!! I doubled the recipe because I wanted a tall cake, but I ended up having 2 layers leftover, so I ended up freezing those layers. When I tell you that the cake came straight out of the freezer, no thawing even required, just as moist as the day I made it! It was fudgy chocolate goodness! My sister had also froze slices of the leftover over birthday cake and told me the same thing yesterday. She has requested it as a Christmas dessert. A++ My entire family loved it!
Dutch chocolate is what I use now in mine. Had to get it once when they were out of the dark chocolate. Girl it deepens the richness. Havent looked back.

You can buy espresso crystals in the coffee aisle and just add water! It'll last a while in your pantry so you can use it in future recipes. If you don't drink coffee and don't have any in your house or a way to brew it, just pick up a single bottled coffee, like the starbucks brand, in the refrigerated section of a convenience store. If it's that you don't like the taste of coffee, you won't really taste it in the cake. 😀
I made this today the only change is that I put it in the large fat daddio cake pan 13x19 and cooked it for 30 minutes and it’s perfect!!!!! Sooo sooo goood!!! The only problem I had was to get it out of the pan. I had to invert my large cutting board. (I have to work on that) Thank you!!!

Ever use regular cocoa? Don't like dark chocolate flavor.

Monique I made this On Sunday to serve last night(Monday) for my husband's birthday party. I baked using square sheet pans and made 2 layers. I also drizzled cold coffee before frosting to make it more moist. It was sooo delicious. Everyone thought I got it from some fancy bakery, everyone kept asking "is this cake really homemade?🤨"😱(My husband's grandma who doesn't really like unhealthy food/junk even had a huge second slice😹) I've never baked a cake so good. The oil instead of butter made so much difference plus buttermilk. Goodness thank you so much!

Monique - OMG! Girl, you are speaking the total truth! I just made this cake and it is the BOMB! I will be making this for everyone ‘s birthday going forward. My lessons learned. A. Keep the number of cups/scoops the same for each cake pan. B. The frosting needs more than 1.33 cups of whipping cream. My little hand mixer almost fried its motor. I also added 1.5 teaspoons of cinnamon to the frosting. Everyone loved the cake! Thank you! Thank you!

I came back just to comment how well this cake turned out. If I could post a picture I would! It was absolutely perfect. It has stayed moist 2 to 3 days later as well. The frosting is just incredible and I highly recommend everybody to use the *dark* cocoa powder instead of regular cocoa powder. It makes all the difference in this recipe and was worth the $3! Tip: If you want nice and even slices, refrigerate the cake for a bit and warm up the knife before cutting. It was worth the effort because of the great layers

I only have 2-9 inch round cake pans. I'm thinking about using the remaining batter to make cupcakes. Would I have to change the temperature and baking time? If yes what should I change it to?
I JUST found this cake recipe 2 days ago. Made it today, and I don’t regret one bit. This IS the best chocolate cake I have ever made. It’s very soft and the right amount of moist. I don’t like when chocolate cake is too moist. And the flavor is beautiful. I thought it would taste too chocolaty, BUT IT DOESNT 🥰. I followed the recipe TO THE DOTTTTTT. I've been waiting for a nice decadent chocolate cake recipe and this one is definitely at I'm going to try it. The buttercream icing turned out good to and I see the difference of leveling out your cake by cutting the tops off and your husband did a great job icing the cake. Looks like a bakery cake. I made this cake today and it’s that deep chocolate Matilda cake...oh my God it’s soooo good! Of course it went easier for me because I used my stand mixer 😏. I only used a 32 oz bag of powder sugar and 1 1/4 Cup of heavy cream for the frosting and it’s perfect. I totally recommend it! 🥰

At the request of a dear friend, I made this cake for the FIRST time two weeks ago (and yes, I used the Hershey's cocoa powder 😏), and it was SOOOO GOOD. Mind you, I gained back ALL the weight that I lost after having one tiny slice 😀 (my friend is a personal trainer who's also a chocoholic). This cake has alot of moving parts when you make it, but the frosting is sooo decadent and easy to make as well. I LOVE HER WEBSITE AND VIDEOS. They're helping me to boost my confidence in the kitchen and improve my skills in the kitchen. She has a few recipies that I'm ANXIOUS to try. (*I made her collard greens two days ago and just like my mom's, they were THE TRUTH*)

I just made this cake just took it out the oven I used two 9inch pans and had to leave mines in the oven maybe 12-15mins longer than you did cause it was still giggly I’m assuming it’s because you separated yours in 3 pans I did two. But it smells so good & tastes like a chocolate brownie cake I love it ! Im going to attempt to decorate the cake …. Key word attempt. & add some gold to it for a pop of color ! Okay, just made this yesterday and trying it today. @divas, amazing job on the recipe, super yummy. One thing I noticed, is the amount of batter per pan, I think you mentioned 2 cups per pan, but yesterday, it turned out I did 3 cups per pan. I was worried at first, as I thought I may be added too much of some ingredient, but after checking and checking, I did it correctly. Outside of that, this is a great cake 👍

Yes I use this Hershey’s blackout cake recipe, too. I noticed you move the sugar to the wet ingredients and added brown sugar. Great modifications!

I'm so late with this comment... I made used this cake recipe for my son's birthday cake in August and it was AH-MAZING!!! I doubled the recipe because I wanted a tall cake, but I ended up having 2 layers leftover, so I ended up freezing those layers. When I tell you that the cake came straight out of the freezer, no thawing even required, just as moist as the day I made it! It was fudgy chocolate goodness! My sister had also froze slices of the leftover over birthday cake and told me the same thing yesterday. She has requested it as a Christmas dessert. A++ My entire family loved it!

I've tried this recipe 2 times. It comes out so amazing. I made my managers wedding cake with the frosting and it was perfect!! Also i just made a version with some xo cafe patron in the wets and a peanut butter frosting to go with it. You need to try this recipe guys.

You can buy espresso crystals in the coffee aisle and just add water! It'll last a while in your pantry so you can use it in future recipes. If you don't drink coffee and don't have any in your house or a way to brew it, just pick up a single bottled coffee, like the starbucks brand, in the refrigerated section of a convenience store. If it's that you don't like the taste of coffee, you won't really taste it in the cake. 😀

I made this today the only change is that I put it in the large fat daddio cake pan 13x19 and cooked it for 30 minutes and it’s perfect!!!!! Sooo sooo goood!!!
