I keep telling people it's not about the voice, the personality is all wrong. There isn't any. The old Garrett kept being pulled into these things he didn't want to. He just wanted to have a comfortable life and retire. He's snarky cause he's smart, he completely took advantage of the Keepers only to go back to the life he wanted, without listening to any of the teachings. It makes sense he didn't want to listen because he grew up an orphan and he's taken care of himself since the start. It makes sense that he dislikes authority because Hammerites were something to be afraid of, they were law enforcement of the city and who knows what happens to pickpockets getting caught. There's also an arc, because he actually started showing care for people, Victoria later, he also helped Basso escape to be with his significant other, and he started listening more to prophecies. It was a character that grew up and learned things and became more than he was. The personality translated to his job. But with the new Garrett, the job translates to the personality, there is no story, there's nothing behind him, he acts like a thief because that's his role, it's "all he know" because that's all that they gave him. It isn't even a character. It didn't have to be the same thing like before, but they didn't even try at a background story.
Haven't played the old games yet, but from what your saying, It sounds like the new Garrett was designed to be amnesia stricken. He does have feelings and it seems he only loves stealing so much, because he has a past (the old games) that he doesn't remember. Even when you get the keeper statue in the catacombs of the old world (beneath the house of Blossoms) Its description includes the phrase "you've seen this somewhere before". Heck, even the catacombs themselves could be where Garrett used to live (in the old games)
As it was stated in the hammerite texts in a cutscene, the thieves hands were cut off and fed to the liars, and the liars tongues were cut out and fed to their theiving brothers The hammers very much adamantly didnt want the world they controlled to be in disorder. Criminals are disorder. The first thief game itself very much played on light and dark themes, Garrett uses the shadows to hide, sneak and steal. His main weakness, light. Its also stated what punishments people got in the prison as you read looking for whos locked up and where. Burnings, torturings, all of it by the hammers and even in the hammers chapel they have yet more torturous devices.
@@elgatochurro Yes and in the prison level in thief gold.İf you had read the log books of prisoners, you can clearly see that they wrote down the punishments aswell. The pickpocket thieves hands are crushed by hammers and as you said by the texts in cutscenes they do really do some bad punishments to thieves and pickpocket guys.
@@Althairs yeah a lot of world building of thief was put into the background and youd have to find it in order to experience it persoanlly. Again very immersive along with the rest of the gameplay as this is how people actually learn things about the world, sometimes they're not even secrets they're just someone's diary.
@@elgatochurro This game makes us think and use our brain unlike the newer games.Thats what ı like about thief and alike, you find your way yourself. You dont wait for a mark or something. Also as you said again thje usually people act normal.İts just a dairy right ? not someones plan on how to destroy the world or something. They are organic.Guards make small and daily life talks also. They dont discuss the lord secret things or how security system can only breached etc.
The old Garrett was such a breath of fresh air among gaming protagonists, and still is to this day. He's amoral and mostly selfish, but showed empathy occasionally towards people he felt deserved it. The new Garrett has to be all noble, emo and full of generic protagonist cliches.
@@sorcerykid yea. Tbh, I really like the new voice actor. But my god, the script is just bad. Like maybe a decent line here and there but 99% is just god awful.
New voice actor is actually fine and does the job, but there's only as much as you can do with lines you are given. Actors don't get a say about writing. They get a set of lines and director who wants them to deliver a line in a specific way and that's it.
I dunno, I think y'all are blinded by nostalgia. The new Garrett's lines seem perfectly in spirit of the old Garrett. Charisma, snide remarks and edgy: "I am the shadows" monologues. Either the old Garrett was "cringy" as well or the new one isn't
I loved how you used Original Garrett's lines to make subtle digs at the lines of New Garrett. Really encapsulates how much different (read: worse) New Garrett is.
Weird tho, I remember him saying the full line in this video.. maybe it was another similar video saying "so that's the famous garret, huh? I guess he's not as good looking as i've heard" directed to new garret's looks , but at the end of the video. Thought it was this one.
Yeah the "Guess he's not as good looking" was the original quote from Deadly Shadows. The"How pretentious can you get?" quote was from Dark Project in response to Lord Bafford's throne room.
Old Garrett categorized his loot, sold it off immediately and disregarded "junk" items. This put control back into his hands, and by extension the players hands. Garrett was a professional with standards and self-defined personality. New Garrett is completely psychotic. His character design is so anarchic, he doesn't look professional, he looks like an escaped mental patient! Since he can't explain his reason for stealing (as this quote demonstrates) he's doing thievery because of his kleptomania. Seriously, his loot isn't categorized, he's just swiping everything. Old Garrett was a role model and an excellent, self-guided protagonist, the ultimate symbol of the lawful neutral. He steals to make rent, and occasionally saves the world. New Garrett is a creepy unwashed psycho who nests in a clocktower and saves the world to...propel the plot, I guess? Or so he can sleep with the teenager who is also clearly insane. Classy, Eidos.
***** Erin is the embodiment of Eidos when making Thief - impractically overdesigned, irreverent towards the game world and player, over-dramatic, neuters free exploration with pointless tools, pretends to know best, all the while having no idea how a Thief mission is SUPPOSED to work. I loved Human Revolution, but the ball was dropped with Thief. Garret is just one problem, Erin another altogether.
Well in my opinion new Garrett is pretty amazing. Sure, his motives are mainly fueled by his kleptomania and by , but there's more to him than that. New Garrett doesn't make friends, doesn't trust and doesn't collaborate, but taking in Erin as his protege made him risk all of the above. By the way, I'm sorry you interpreted the deep bond between Garrett and Erin as just another story of "she hot I wanna shag her" because that definitely wasn't that. IF you would have read the Dark Horse comics, you'd know he tried to teach Erin his ways because he saw himself in her and wanted to change her life for the better, but Erin had a huge problem being told what to do because she got traumatized at her first day of work as a blossom in the brothel. THAT'S why Erin is such a rebel towards Garrett. And why would you call Garrett an unwashed psycho who nests in a clocktower that saves the world? (There's literally a bowl of water and a brush in his home) Garrett himself told the Queen of Beggars that he is not a savior. Literally all he wanted to save was Erin, but at the end, even she thought he was only after power and tried to kill him. At the very end, when trying to free Erin from the Primal energy, he was so concerned about her. And seeing a character SO uninterested in any kind of friendship (not to mention relationship) caring this much for his protege, even after being haunted by her, hated by her and attacked by her... was so overwhelming to me. There is not a single trace of romance between them, only platonic care from Garrett's side. I know this won't change your outlook on the new game and you probably won't take this seriously... But if given some thought (okay a lot of thought), new Garrett has a complex personality and clear reasons as to why he did what he did in Thief 4. But I have to admit that Erin is a disaster. No argument here.
WolfLinkLover11 If by "overwhelmed" you mean "incredibly confused," then I too was overwhelmed by Garrett saving Erin. He gave no evidence of even being her friend. This supposedly "deep" relationship wasn't expounded upon AT ALL. The first thing he says about her: "I hope that's not who I think it is." They only worked together because of "Basso's commission." She actively made the prologue mission unbearable, physically pushing Garrett aside at one point. When he calls her murderous behavior "out of control," she pulls a crying hissy fit. He steals from her, they get in a physical confrontation, and then she jumps through a window like a tantrum-induced five year old. I ASSUMED he was pursuing Erin because the Queen of Beggars explained that she would destroy the city, because we've seen what Erin does when she gets upset. I merely assumed there was a sexual relationship between the two because their personalities (or lack thereof) clashed so vehemently, but hey, they were vaguely flirty, so I guess they've had a fling or something, I dunno. It didn't help that he started stroking her face for no reason at the end of the boss fight. Oh yeah, she was the final boss, THAT ISN'T CONFUSING AT ALL!! And no, I didn't read the comics, because I didn't want an outside source spoiling or conflicting my understanding of the game's story. The fact that plot-essential details were given in an outside text, not in the game itself, is bad story telling. Sorry, but I don't see how their relationship was deep.
WolfLinkLover11 One last note, I guess "unwashed" wasn't fair, but he does look like a complete, creepy psycho. The overdesigned belt-buckle-debacle of his costume, the eye shadow, the mopeyness that detracted from the fun I tried to have, his weird spider monkey pipe shuffle, and the way he stroked Erin's face while she was made helpless at the end of the boss fight were just strange. I merely interpreted Garrett's character with the tools provided by the game.
CDRunningG Well, sure he doesn't care about her, I mean it's not like he instantly looked for her as soon as he saw a sign that she could still be alive. That hissy fit happened because of the phrase "you're not in control" Garrett said to her. It reminded her of her time in the House of Blossoms and brought up some ugly memories (I mean jesus... she would have been raped if she didn't kill the guy), which is why she got so angry, since her way of solving problems is to act aggressively and without thought, usually keeping murder as her backup plan when something goes wrong. Garrett steals the claw to avoid any more bloodshed from Erin's side. And later, Garrett told her not to try to get the Primal, but she didn't listen, but the mistake from his side was that he kept bossing Erin around before already, which made her even more stubborn than she already was. Maybe if he wasn't so overprotective of her, Erin may have listened. Well he didn't stroke her, he merely tried to hold her, to give her SOME kind of feeling of security. I mean all year she has been tortured, used and fought over. Wouldn't you want someone to hold you after such experiences? I dunno, to me it looked like Garrett just wanted to reassure her that all that was going to be over soon. But when did they flirt, in your opinion? I got the impression that you felt like they were arguing whenever they spoke to each other. That's understandable. As far as I've heard, Eidos didn't have enough time to make the game what it was going to be AT ALL because they often changed the plot, had to re-do tons of stuff and so on, but they imagined this game to be a big thing and just didn't have enough time to cram the content into the game itself, so Eidos made a comic clarifying what actually made Garrett refuse to work with Erin. I can only agree that this game has not reached its full potential. It could have been so much better. But I had a lot of fun playing it, I loved exploring the world (please don't mention the loading screens) and it had some pretty good jokes in it. And there are rumors that Eidos wants to fix their mistakes in a sequel to Thief 4, which was already heavily implied already, so maybe they'll do better next time. Oh man, so sorry for my essays, I just really enjoy talking about Thief :'D
Never played the games, but I already prefer old Garret. He actually seemed to have some depth to him besides just stealing things, and did it mostly out of necessity rather than pleasure. New Garret is just a kleptomaniac.
Doctor Ryodine I got them through steam, and had to download a fan-made patch through the Looking Glass forums. I believe you don't need the patch if you get the GoG version, I could be wrong
In all fairness the older Garret was a kleptomaniac too; he could've been a Keeper and lived a normal life, but he REALLY liked stealing stuff so he dropped that and became a thief instead. The difference is the delivery and attitude; the newer Garret is weirdly serious about the whole thing, and has this sort of bitterness towards the city to his quips. The older one didn't actually make judgements; he'd make a dry remark, but what business is it of his business what anyone does? He steals shit for a living.
Real Garrett - Real man, for mature audiences New Garrett - Cheap, pathetic little hero out of a disney animation, who appeals to the MC Donald's happy meal kids... The kind that becomes a toy doll later on
Absolutely loved the original Thief trilogy. Garret was a very down-to-earth anti-hero. He worried about day-to-day shit, he didn't always come on top and would occasionally be betrayed and have to fight his way out or otherwise escape and in many ways he was frequently placed against incredible odds. He gets hurt several times and all through it he's just an incredibly gifted anti-hero who just wants to pay the rent and retire. Stealing is his passion, but he's a on-edge guy, too. Best part about him is his amazing humour. He always has something clever, witty or hilarious to say in even the most dire situations. I have all this to describe Garrett because throughout the course of Thief 1-3, you get to know Garrett very well and his personality is just as much a driving force as the story itself. Plus since he's such a realistic, albeit cocky guy you kinda feel like you know him. You become endeared with the character. I've never bought Thief 4 and I never will for two reasons: 1. It wasn't Garrett, it was a terrible pretender who was nothing like Garrett and his shitty pseudo brooding teen personality is a reason not to play, not a reason to play like Stephen Russel's Garrett. 2. The third game basically made Garrett the most powerful dude in the city and set up(in the most awesome way, the last line in Thief 3 mirroring the very first line that introduces you to the game in Thief 1: "it's not easy to find a keeper, especially one who does not wish to be found") for a young girl to basically take on th mantle of greatest Thief. Sure, Garrett would presumably have mentored her, so he'd still be stealing, but there's no risk to him anymore - he's basically invisible to 90% of people. But 'it's just what I do' nah fuck you, Thief 4 could've had a strong female protagonist instead with Garret in cutscenes of mission briefings to add his dark humour and I would've been happy with that. But instead they choose a terrible reboot and I honestly hope it fails, because it would hopefully mean they won't piss on the previous games anymore than they have, or they'd do the right thing and just stick to the story and the real Garrett.
Your post is three years old but thought I'd add: what you mentioned is what made Thief 3 such a perfect ending. Mind you, I had my problems with the gameplay. You could run through the game and no baddie could possibly catch you. It was not as challenging and they stole my precious rope arrows (but that's not that big a deal). What made it wonderful and perfect is that it furthered the story and completed it. We end as we began, but with Garrett as the "complete" person, the character who has "become more than what he was," taking on the role of the wise Keeper/Master Thief, presumably for the next troublesome and disrespectful "Garrett." It's a complete cycle. From spring to winter to spring again. But Thief 4? It's perfectly obvious that they didn't bother to play or study the original games. They deliberately ignored them and created a new character on the cheap. No creativity. No passion. No talent. Dead inside, like the characters they made.
Old Garret would never say "It's who I am" in that situation, he would say, "Fuck this I'm out." He cares about himself and occasionally others, the only reason he steals is to pay the rent and because he enjoys the challenge. Considering that he won't be fulfilling either of those in that situation they totally fucked up Garret's character.
(In a world where the old garrett was in teef) Erin: garrett in slipping give me the fucking claw! Garrett: whats it worth to you? Erin: WHAT Garrett: *pulls out list of people he cares about* Garrett Garrett Garrett Garrett Garrett Garrett Reliable friends that provide a way of making money Garrett Garrett Me So erin, do you see YOUR name on this list? Erin:... Garrett: so why should i save you? *releases grip* Garrett: oops, sorry erin, i was "slipping" *proceeds to pick up loot while walking away*
Honestly, I don't think Romano is that bad, but he will never ever top Stephen Russell. Romano was a decent imitator, but SR is the true voice of Garrett.
Yeah, I agree. Romano wasn't the problem, it was the writing and directing. If he had been given a better script then he would have been just fine as a new voice for Garrett. At least comparable to the better fan voices in some of the fan missions.
***** Yeah, exactly. He was paid to do it that way, just as Russell was paid to do it his way (even though I believe Russell had a lot more creative freedom and better connection with the people making the game than Romano had). Regardless of how much money you throw at someone to make a cheap, shallow character come to life, the result will still be cheap and shallow. Seeing it this way makes me glad Russell didn't do it.
Mhm. Honestly I feel bad because for some of the better parts of his dialog, most of it during the side missions, I felt he actually did channel Garrett well. It's just when he goes all "It's who I am it's all I've ever known I am the night hurr hurr hurr" that you just, feel bad for the guy having to recite such cliche dialog.
@@pastelfromgreece9603 Nope. "With the new visual of Garrett we'd created, we found that there was a disconnect that we couldn't ignore between the concepted character and Stephen's voice today," Gallagher explained. "And to answer your question directly, the actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts," Verbert said Thief dev explains why it ditched original Garrett voice actor Totally shitty and nosense excuse if I have ever heard one.
This needs more views and more likes. Done amazingly. Also says a lot when the original character has enough dialogue to make fun of the new one better than anyone possibly could.
old garrett stole for a couple reasons: 1. to pay the rent 2. he enjoys the challange new garrett steals because of some strange need to steal. It's like younger brother who is always taking your shit. kinda pathetic tbh.
TheSourpatch01 well, maybe not the challange, but it was clear when hearing him talk in the cutscenes that he was somewhat egotistical. So I do think he does enjoy putting his skills to use, I just think they went overboard in the new game when they turned him into some kind of kleptomaniac. Point is, old Garrett enjoyed thieving because he was good at it. New Garrett likes thieving for very different reasons. He talks about it like stealing fulfills some kind of addiction.
Old Garrett also needed steal a lot because his gadgets for next stealing jobs were EXTREMELY expensive... He was using crystal headed arrow(water arrow),flash bombs, mines etc... all of them are product of most advanced technology in that world, its like he was using military grade gears and throwing them for get "gold".How come he couldn't pay the rent otherwise,He stole a lot goods from Mansion, lord's manor etc... So he was kinda stealing for stealing too. He could have just pick pocketing and live peacefully =(
+Filthy Swine The original Garrett was still kind of a klepto. He did find it thrilling to steal and get away with it. But he didn't let it define the entirety of who he was as a person and the writers of the original did a much better job of making a more real and believable character with actual depth.
I never played any of the older Thief games but the older Garrett seemed to have an actual personality. He was a character you'd want to see and read in a book and follow him through a story. new Garrett has a generic thief mindset and personality.
Real Garrett is legend. They completely changed his character in new Thief and the game itself was terrible as well. Original Thief games are still legendary. There is nothing like them out there.
Original Garret sounds like your listening or reading his private diary, something thats a privilege, I listened to every sentence while you wait for the next cozy map to start, The new one is a bit like a dude trying to brag how awesome of a theif he is, Then again i only tried the new theif game maybe for an hour before i decided its something of a cashgrab and nothing for me, The first two is masterpieces in history, the third is pretty good too.
I like both Garretts. The old one seems... matured. He's past the point in his life where he's still considered a child (even if he takes the form of an adult), and he has other shit to deal with. That makes his character interesting, and it adds a sense of professionalism to his work. The new one is young, or appears to be (judging by his voice, too, he's probably younger than the Garrett we know from the original). He acts on an impulse to do what he does best, partially because he needs money like every other Joe Schmoe, but also because it's something that gives him a kick - a dangerous hobby, if you will. That can be, if written well, equally as interesting as the former's story, if a bit cliche for the Thief/Rogue archetype (the former of which Thief is obviously going for :|). My only issue with the reboot (optimization and a lack of freedom with the jumping/rope arrows aside, as well as minor grievances) is the fact that the game sorta contradicts itself by letting you loot every little object. Want a fork? Fuck, take it. Why not, right? It defies what he says to Erin in the beginning, especially: "It's not how much you steal, it's what you steal." No, Garrett, it's clearly how much you steal. You're taking forks worth a single gold coin, for fuck's sake. If it was really about what you stole (and the challenge that came with it), you'd only be stealing those expensive busts and collectables and paintings. |: So all in all, I hope that when they make a second game (and let's be honest, it's going to happen whether we want it or not), they can remove that separation from character actions performed by the player and narrative. TL;DR Make it so that I can't steal fucking spoons and forks. :|
Honestly, I think the "new" Garrett has a good character design and they took character traits from the first games and adapted them to their setting. What they didn't do well is the presentation. They completely fucked up the introduction of Erin, bc she could've been much more likeable if they hadn't shown us her ass being reckless and apparently in puberty in the beginning and then make Garrett chase someone the player doesn't feel sympathy for. Of course they start to question Garrett's new design at that lol
I actually like both Garrett's - the old one is a refreshingly egoistical and pragmatic anti-hero (who's greed gets him into all sorts of trouble - if he'd been genre-savy enough to walk away from robed guyes, things would have been less complicated), the new one is kinder and sort of wiser - maybe what the original Garrett would have become over time? Although I dislike the pseudo-philosphical "I own the night, thieving is what I am", stuff. But whatever. Thief 4 was a fun game to play through and at least new Garrett doesn't have to pay rent anymore ;) I love the fact they kept the stealth element at the center instead of focusing on battle, which is what I was dreading. And I think they are both are complete kleptomaniacs, which is kind of mandatory when someone chooses to become a professional thief. Old Garrett chose to abandon a life as a memeber as keeper because he loved stealing (and money) so much.
(Quote from the book in the forbiden library, thief ds) "Garrett didnt feel his he had the balence, so he left before the ceremony" He didnt feel like he belonged. He didnt do it because thievery called him. Thievery came because garrett called thievery
Yep. Frankly, as a fan of the Thief trilogy since the beginning, I was thoroughly disappointed with the reboot. Had it been its own unique game, I wouldn't have minded so much. But it was a letdown for me. :-/
The old Garrett was great, but I like the new one too. Some people call the new one Fail, but I really enjoyed the game and I think there are other games, like Gothic4 that deserves to be called Fail much more.
i know the new game want meant to be just like the old, especially because of the different companies who made it. but i still see quite a bit of similarities between old and new garrett ^^ i love them both, regardless! all the games were really good in my opinion
Thief ended with Deadly Shadows. But cheer up, if you haven't played: Thief 2x, Thief 1&2 Fan Missions, or The Dark Mod, and you need a fix for your Thief addiction, now's the time.
Just to clarify guys: The new Garrett in Thief 4 is not the same old Garrett as in previous games. He is a descendant. If you look, he has both his natural eyes, tho one of his eyes is augmented with a piece of the Primal. Old Garrett has a mechanical eye. New Garrett can find this eye in Moira's Asylum (which seems to be on the site of the Moira Mansion). The Keeper Library and Compound are not rubbled, ancient ruins. New Garrett also find caches of treasure hidden by Old Garrett. New Garrett even refers to this other thief as "The Other Me" and "Master Sneak Thief". The caches New Garrett finds are full of coins "As old as the City". The current City is built upon the ruins of an older City (hinted to be the City from the previous games). Technology in the city has also greatly advanced, much more so than should be possible in a single human's life time, especially in such a dangerous profession. Thief 2 happens in BRy436 (House Bresling's Reign year 436) Thief 4 happens in NRy842 (House Northcrest's Reign year 842) So at least 842 years have passed between those two settings. I'm not sure on the timeline of Thief 3.
This all being said, Old Garrett was more compelling. While he wanted to retire from thievery, he was always drawn back to it. He did not want to admit he had any altruistic nature, he has taken jobs that benefited others that he would normally not take....tho he justified it by that job having high possible rewards (which they did). Old Garrett stole for himself (occasionally stealing for others, but more to impress them than benefit them) and he would steal from the rich or poor. New Garrett is more of a Robin Hood, exclusively targeting the rich, and he steals for the challenge.
I must say a bit I'm happy that the "new Garret" exist, because only because of this new "thief game" I found the old ones. it has a few good sides to bring new Gamers like me to the originals, because Why should I play part 4 when I have no idea what happened in 1, 2 and 3^^
I actually just started playing thief. Heard the newest one was shit and thats all i knew. So i just sorta took thief gold. (Gold is shiny). I love it to death and am going to buy deadly shadows and metal age. Fuck thief 4
you have a point, but this thief is not a thief 4, it is not a secuel of the older thiefs, it's a reboot. It is technically a thief 1 again, but with a diferent story!!
This is true, this new game is nothing compared to the old games, the original games really makes you feel like you are in the game. But still, saying that this is thief 4 is the same thing that saying that amazing spiderman is spiderman 4, because it is not a secuel!!
For Erin to be grown up, Garrett would be a LOT older. I mean, he seemed to be around 40 in the trilogy and Erin was a little girl (when it ended, where he could have been even older). That's what I liked the most about the trilogy; he wasn't some young lithe guy--he was a little bit older, had to use stealth instead of brute strength. VERY appealing.
Sorry to necropost, but the "not-aging" thing could be because of the "key" thing of Deadly Shadows. Not sure, though, and not liking the 4th game the tiniest bit anyway.
The new Garrett DOES NOT EXIST... We can not feel the spirit of the Dark Project (French name of the saga) at all. So, i will continue playing the Fan Mission "Night at Rocksbourg" (on DarkProject II) ;)
I'm an oldschool Thief fan, started with The Metal Age and been a fan since. I love Russell's Garrett but I must say the new one is also quite good. It's easy to mock him after choosing the most cringy dialogues. There's a lot of old Garrett style things the new one is saying during chapters. Romano did a great job as Garrett. This game would't be so hated if it wasn't Thief.
I have a feeling if they said that the new Garret was a different character (different name, costume, voice, personality, etc) people would stop bitching
We true fans shall never forget the real Master Thief. The new one is only an emo kleptomeniac, to be liked by all those emo people out there, a far cry from the professional thief we love. I actualy have signed the petition that was made before the 4th game release to at last give the new Garret the same voice as the old, but I suppose it was ignored (some thousand of fans signed); however having seen how the new game has come out I have to agree with Kim Stennabb Caesar (some post below): glad that Stephen Russell as been kept out of this shit. The only thing that is good about the new game is the graphic, but right now making a game with bad graphics is almost impossible. So to those who have only played thief 4 out there...go play the 3 games before, and forget that the last one ever existed.
All of Thief reboot physical copies should be dumped in the Maw of Chaos. That game was a rape of an amazing intellectual property without soul or respect.
Although I only played the 2014 version, I like the voice at the beginning of the video much better. Firstly, the voice is deeper, and secondly, it seems to me that the first voice of “old Garett” more believably corresponds to the thief. the second is Garett, he wants people to like him when the first one doesn’t care about the opinions of others 😅😅😅
I feel like everyone shits on new thief way too much, but considering how much better the first 2 were it makes sense. Like I think its a bad thief game definitely but as its own thing its still a largely playable and somewhat enjoyable game. Especially for a modern one lol. It should have def been its own ip instead of trying to redo the original.
Stephen Russell will always and forever be the only True Garrett. May the builder and the trickster smite the developers of the 4th terrible incarnation of this legacy.
This is an amazing work of art. For you to save a sincere, well written character and voice actor from succumbing to the plain embodiment of a shallow monster called Garret of Thief 4. Oh how I miss the self-centered anti-hero. He feels so much more sincere and deep.
I really don't know why people hate new Thief. New Garrett has really similar voice to the old one. And I think that new look suits him better than old. He's covered in darkness not only in shadows of the streets but also in his clothes which are really dark and he looks so mysterious with covered face. Also the game has really atmospheric climate, amazing graphics of buildings and realistic moves like Garret's shadow, moves like grabing the edge of wall or looking down from the stairs. You can feel that U are him but #Haters gonna hate
People will always be sold on the original always, The new voice is a skilled talent, But I believe the rest of the work on 4 wasn't what people wanted to see.
Both are good so relax,I've played a shit load with new Garrett until I got majority of achievement and special loot and not just gonna throw it out the window just cuz ppl aren't used to the new voice. His is more smooth.
As a true thief fan I must say, I love the series and I love Garret. I love the old Garret I mean. He is what made the game so interesting and fun. Even though I still like the new Thief game, I was expecting a lot more from it. I expected it to be the same Garret, the same people and everything. First of all the fucking map in the new Thief is TINY compared to the old Thief. I feel like there is less to do now in the game. Thief 3 was released in 2004 and I have waited a literal 10 YEARS for thief 4! And as long as it took to get here I must say I am majorly fucking disapointed.
the new Garret is obviously the older more experienced Garret. when he's with Erin [who IS YOUNG and has an attitude that T1 and T2 Garret had when approached by the Keepers] he sees the magic at work, the circle of cloaked spooky figures and wants out... no arguements, no discussion... figures in robes means trouble for Garret. from Thief 1 to Thief 3 it means getting into something out of your depth. why? if you're a fan and have played ALL the Thief games you'll know that he lost an eye [as you can tell from his face.. one of his eyes is a metallic 'steampunk' device that a Hammerite sect fitted with - no doubt - the influence of the Keepers as the Keepers knew ALL the information about everyone... this was a handy recon tool but i guess the devs were too lazy to include it] and, almost his life. he's only a man, after all, but when people summon gods even Garret knows his limits and if a buncha creepy robed freaks summon something? you can bet shadows won't protect you. Erin, tho, is young and doesn't have the experiences that Garret has to draw upon. as badly written as T4 Garret is [he has the character of a piece of chalkboard] i still see him as a much older Thief now w Erin taking on the role of Thief 1,2 and 3 Garret, in his younger, rebellious days.... such a shame they killed off Erin so early as SHE should have been the next "Garret", so to speak. it's sad but obvious that Garret is now in the role of the Keepers of his youth and, like everybody, our candles don't burn forever. but having an older Garret saying "it's what i do" is fkn pathetic!! maybe he's going thru a mid-life crisis? he'll prob buy himself a huge black stallion & race around the city picking up teenage girls, trying to convince himself he's not in the descent of his youth.. oh wait... that was me. i dumped the horse for a car tho... friggin horse was shitting eveywhere
+CDRunningG lol guy... Erin was like his sister. He even told this in game or something like that, but U don't have to look really close to see that he's like her older brother who takes care of her. Erin even names him like that in the Asylum mission.
You know, I've played every thief game. Even thief 3 which is just... nevermind. THI4F was actually really fun to play. And, kinda enjoyed the story. And it doesn't compare to the metal age, but what can? So you know there's a fan made free copy of a game a lot like thief made by dedicated fans right? If you only had a story to tell with it? Maybe some decent voice acting, I'll do it I'm sure my agent would be thrilled. Anyone else, go find "The Dark Project" and you'll be richly rewarded by the enhanced climbing and mantling physics. Honestly, I really enjoy THI4F because I like being rewarded for being the hunter sometimes and lets be real, combat in that game is hard. Garret's a badboy. But this may be a prequel. He sounds pretty young, what if he's only like 24? Maybe he isn't the master thief he thinks he is? THIEF 5 please make one, should be about Garret getting his punk ass ripped off by someone better than he is and make the game about one upping the other thief by performing a massive heist on him.
old Garrett I get goose bumps, but new Garrett I believe did a pretty good but nothing close to original. Bring back what is right. Make it right again...While you're at it, bring back the full LGS team and make a System Shock 3. Thank you.
Hey people, I just got into these series, which game should I start with? Since I noted Thief is a pretty old series, the first game came 1998, I have no problem with graphics, but what does the games have to offer in terms of story and gameplay.. so on? Thankful for any answer.
dammit. i bought all four thief games as a bundle and i regret getting the last one. kinda hoped it would just be TDS but with newer graphics or something. hopes were too high.
well cant expect a given up game to be salvaged effectively when they lose the actor. The coding team the gameplay team the story team ect... they lost everyone so yeah they did a very common game because its all you can do when every body leave, and are left with an half done project you paid for. but for me both garret are okay the old one is more down to earth the other a bit more romanised. even with all tis flaw thief 4 was enjoyable and knowing its history of makign i'm happy it was at least somewhat good. what i finded strange is that the in mission dialogue were often way better than the sinamtics dialogues. well I played the game in french and the voice actor did a good job here
Old Garrett: Real, down-to-earth, survivalist badass.
New Garrett: Edgy, emo leather-paladin.
lol
Oof
Edgy, emo, leather paladin AND crack addict XD
Well. I have a feeling good old Garrett would give a few "Robin slap" to the new one if they ever meet. And it would be fun to watch.
Darth Millenial anyone.
"I hate modern trends"
Yep, me too.
Well, Garret seems like a perfect Republican to me.
As it was stated in the hammerite texts in a cutscene, the thieves hands were cut off and fed to the liars, and the liars tongues were cut out and fed to their theiving brothers
The hammers very much adamantly didnt want the world they controlled to be in disorder.
"If I want it, I get it."
Too bad Nu Garrett can't seem to steal a personality.
what do you expect. he can't even jump.
I mean he stole Batman's personality.
@@Gigagorillaz broke half of it on his way to a hot topic
you men New garrett can't Garret XD
The old Garrett was such a breath of fresh air among gaming protagonists, and still is to this day. He's amoral and mostly selfish, but showed empathy occasionally towards people he felt deserved it. The new Garrett has to be all noble, emo and full of generic protagonist cliches.
Honestly new Garrett's general dialogue is borderline cringey, but the voice actor himself did a good job at doing Garrett's actual voice.
True, I watched the trailer of Thief 4 when Stephen Russell was still the voice actor.
It was so cringy because of the writing.
Agreed, if a bad script is all you have to work with you can't really blame the voice actor.
"So, that's the famous Garrett, huh? How pretentious can you get..."
Get the older ones if you can! Good Old Games website helps make them run on modern systems, and they're super small downloads!
CDRunningG I gotta try that!
CDRunningG or just steam
He steals shit for a living.
lol "I hate modern trends"
Real Garrett - Real man, for mature audiences
New Garrett - Cheap, pathetic little hero out of a disney animation, who appeals to the MC Donald's happy meal kids...
I've never bought Thief 4 and I never will for two reasons:
We already got that tho. It's called Thief 2: Shadows of the Metal Age.
It's pretty good.
(In a world where the old garrett was in teef)

Besides, it's spelling, not grammar.
Honestly, I don't think Romano is that bad, but he will never ever top Stephen Russell. Romano was a decent imitator, but SR is the true voice of Garrett.
Romano would probably have been better if the script wasn't written like a Hollywood movie.
2014 Thief didn't want Mr.Russell anymore, Nice Guy Dishonored comes along and says "F@$k that, we'll take him!"
I think he was unavailable at the time of making the game
@@pastelfromgreece9603 Nope.
"With the new visual of Garrett we'd created, we found that there was a disconnect that we couldn't ignore between the concepted character and Stephen's voice today," Gallagher explained. "And to answer your question directly, the actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts," Verbert said
Thief dev explains why it ditched original Garrett voice actor
Totally shitty and nosense excuse if I have ever heard one.
This needs more views and more likes. Done amazingly. Also says a lot when the original character has enough dialogue to make fun of the new one better than anyone possibly could.
old garrett stole for a couple reasons:
1. to pay the rent
2. he enjoys the challange
new garrett steals because of some strange need to steal. It's like younger brother who is always taking your shit. kinda pathetic tbh.
TheSourpatch01
well, maybe not the challange, but it was clear when hearing him talk in the cutscenes that he was somewhat egotistical.
He was using crystal headed arrow(water arrow),flash bombs, mines etc... all of them are product of most advanced technology in that world, its like he was using military grade gears and throwing them for get "gold".How come
he couldn't pay the rent otherwise,He stole a lot goods from Mansion, lord's manor etc...
"Unfortunately not everyone is as commited to their work as i am" Gave me a chuckle, considering the premise.
Played the new Thief unfortunately....why am I stealing knives and forks ??
To cut corners in the thievery business? To fork out a chunk of your life to waste on the next chapter?
Why am I stealing u say?.....some knifes and forks usually be round 10 -5 depends if its silver money is money every thief knows that.
In old Thief games you can steal knives and forks too. So shush.
@@advancedpowerarmormkii7032 Nope, there were coins, expensive wine bottles, purses, golden candlesticks, gems... never forks and knives.
Well it makes sense to steal them if they're made out of gold.
I never played any of the older Thief games but the older Garrett seemed to have an actual personality. He was a character you'd want to see and read in a book and follow him through a story. new Garrett has a generic thief mindset and personality.
Old comment, but did you end up playing the Thief games?
Real Garrett is legend. They completely changed his character in new Thief and the game itself was terrible as well. Original Thief games are still legendary. There is nothing like them out there.
It still hurts.
So all in all, I hope that when they make a second game (and let's be honest, it's going to happen whether we want it or not), they can remove that separation from character actions performed by the player and narrative.
TL;DR Make it so that I can't steal fucking spoons and forks. :|
This reaaallly makes me want to play the old thief games :P
Old Garrett was THE MAN
At least old Garrett is in Dishonored 2.
Corvo is going to be hard to distinguish from Garrett now xD
Francis Cadigan
I find that to be a good thing.
+Francis Cadigan Quite frankly, I won't mind that
So Dishonored 2 is essentially Thief 4 and we can forget that the reboot exists
+Isaac Loo (CerberusGate) lol xD
I'll never forget him :,( I 've just played the old games , I am glad it works on win 10 :D Such a real nostalgia.
"I hate modern trends"
I can feel that Garrett.
Dat Stephen Russell. Praise be to thee.
Thief 4 was a fun game to play through and at least new Garrett doesn't have to pay rent anymore ;)
I love the fact they kept the stealth element at the center instead of focusing on battle, which is what I was dreading.
And I think they are both are complete kleptomaniacs, which is kind of mandatory when someone chooses to become a professional thief.
Old Garrett chose to abandon a life as a memeber as keeper because he loved stealing (and money) so much.
(Quote from the book in the forbiden library, thief ds)
"Garrett didnt feel his he had the balence, so he left before the ceremony"
He didnt feel like he belonged. He didnt do it because thievery called him. Thievery came because garrett called thievery
_untitld Yup, I think him being an orphan stunted his emotional development. He just doesn't know how to fit in a large group
This whole thing is like the Devil May Cry Dante and DMC Devil May Cry Donte
Stephen Russell IS Garrett, this others guys just a wannabe
Yep. Frankly, as a fan of the Thief trilogy since the beginning, I was thoroughly disappointed with the reboot. Had it been its own unique game, I wouldn't have minded so much. But it was a letdown for me. :-/
This is the only true answer.
The Shyamalan twist: Eidos Montreal was the true thief all along!
You know that Garret-wannabe in thief 3? Looks like he got his own game
"If you want garrett type jobs, you need to pay garrett type prices"
The old Garrett was great, but I like the new one too. Some people call the new one Fail, but I really enjoyed the game and I think there are other games, like Gothic4 that deserves to be called Fail much more.
Arcania was great, just recently I finished the expansion by stunlocking the final boss. I love how bad the game is lol
i like the new Garrett. I don't know why, but I like him.
You must have low standards or something.
@@remotefreak147 an opinion is an opinion.
i know the new game want meant to be just like the old, especially because of the different companies who made it. but i still see quite a bit of similarities between old and new garrett ^^ i love them both, regardless! all the games were really good in my opinion
Thief ended with Deadly Shadows. But cheer up, if you haven't played: Thief 2x, Thief 1&2 Fan Missions, or The Dark Mod, and you need a fix for your Thief addiction, now's the time.
Original Garrett rocks! Wish they'd make a new Thief game with the original Garrett like the first two games just with better graphics.
I like both voice actors. I loved old games and I love new one :)
I came here because I heard this guy is gonna voice Corvo in Dishonored 2. Sounds decent enough.
The original one is going to be Corvo's voice, not the shitty new one by the way.
yea he does Corvo's voice in the new game the first game Corvo was silent
I friggin' love how it sounds like Real Garrett is roasting Pseudo Garrett.
I love you man, thanks for this.
Thief 2 happens in BRy436 (House Bresling's Reign year 436)
Thief 4 happens in NRy842 (House Northcrest's Reign year 842)
So at least 842 years have passed between those two settings.
TheSourpatch01 what doesn't exist?
you have a point, but this thief is not a thief 4, it is not a secuel of the older thiefs, it's a reboot. It is technically a thief 1 again, but with a diferent story!!
but when it is with a new story then it isn't thief 1
and thief 4 has nothing what the old games made so good
This is true, this new game is nothing compared to the old games, the original games really makes you feel like you are in the game.
Hands down, Stephen Russell will always the best voice actor for Garrett!
Shoot you can even look at skyrim because the original garret voice actor did lines of dialogue for a character in the thieves guild there
I have a feeling if they said that the new Garret was a different character (different name, costume, voice, personality, etc) people would stop bitching
Garrett is awesome in all games
goddammit Square Enix
Square Enix could make any game Soft and gay and emo.
Stephen Russell for the win. I mean, obviously.
Old garrett was so damn sassy I love it
All of Thief reboot physical copies should be dumped in the Maw of Chaos.
OMG, only old Garrett!
I really like the new Garrett and also his new voice actor Romano. He has that sexy dark anti hero thing going on that I like.
I liked new Garrett more.
God, this is perfect.
Stephen Russell recast because he couldn't do backflips for the mocap. Fucking nonsense.
People will always be sold on the original always, The new voice is a skilled talent, But I believe the rest of the work on 4 wasn't what people wanted to see.
Beautifully edited.
I wish the 2014 thief never happened. All that money and resources could be put to better use than ruining a beloved franchise for a quick buck.
I like both. I like the old games for what they were and the new one for what it is. Fuck me, right?
I love the game.. i want the best for it. I hope those who are here want the same too.
Both are good so relax,I've played a shit load with new Garrett until I got majority of achievement and special loot and not just gonna throw it out the window just cuz ppl aren't used to the new voice. His is more smooth.
now you know where I got my name...
And as long as it took to get here I must say I am majorly fucking disapointed.
all i hear is mercer frey in the beginning tbh
the new Garret is obviously the older more experienced Garret.
when he's with Erin [who IS YOUNG and has an attitude that T1 and T2 Garret had when approached by the Keepers] he sees the magic at work, the circle of cloaked spooky figures and wants out... no arguements, no discussion... figures in robes means trouble for Garret. from Thief 1 to Thief 3 it means getting into something out of your depth.
why? if you're a fan and have played ALL the Thief games you'll know that he lost an eye [as you can tell from his face.. one of his eyes is a metallic 'steampunk' device that a Hammerite sect fitted with - no doubt - the influence of the Keepers as the Keepers knew ALL the information about everyone... this was a handy recon tool but i guess the devs were too lazy to include it] and, almost his life.
he's only a man, after all, but when people summon gods even Garret knows his limits and if a buncha creepy robed freaks summon something? you can bet shadows won't protect you.
Erin, tho, is young and doesn't have the experiences that Garret has to draw upon.
as badly written as T4 Garret is [he has the character of a piece of chalkboard] i still see him as a much older Thief now w Erin taking on the role of Thief 1,2 and 3 Garret, in his younger, rebellious days....
such a shame they killed off Erin so early as SHE should have been the next "Garret", so to speak.
it's sad but obvious that Garret is now in the role of the Keepers of his youth and, like everybody, our candles don't burn forever.
but having an older Garret saying "it's what i do" is fkn pathetic!! maybe he's going thru a mid-life crisis? he'll prob buy himself a huge black stallion & race around the city picking up teenage girls, trying to convince himself he's not in the descent of his youth..
oh wait... that was me. i dumped the horse for a car tho... friggin horse was shitting eveywhere
you can say that garrett has stole the show haaa😁
+CDRunningG
lol guy... Erin was like his sister. He even told this in game or something like that, but U don't have to look really close to see that he's like her older brother who takes care of her. Erin even names him like that in the Asylum mission.
Where is that very first quote from?
HAHAHA this was a great stitch together
THIEF 5 please make one, should be about Garret getting his punk ass ripped off by someone better than he is and make the game about one upping the other thief by performing a massive heist on him.
great stuff
old Garrett I get goose bumps, but new Garrett I believe did a pretty good but nothing close to original. Bring back what is right. Make it right again...While you're at it, bring back the full LGS team and make a System Shock 3. Thank you.
ending is perfect
So I'm the only one that likes both iterations of the infamous thief?
Hey people, I just got into these series, which game should I start with? Since I noted Thief is a pretty old series, the first game came 1998, I have no problem with graphics, but what does the games have to offer in terms of story and gameplay.. so on? Thankful for any answer.
ZilentSilence You should start with Thief Gold
HgoGustavo Thanks, I'll see for myself then.
New garret
dammit. i bought all four thief games as a bundle and i regret getting the last one. kinda hoped it would just be TDS but with newer graphics or something. hopes were too high.
where is the other rantvideo man ! i loved that rantvideo !!!!
th-cam.com/video/xaQmzShBZ_k/w-d-xo.html
love this
I work with Steven Russell at a Market in Wellfleet he is a cool guy
never played the original games, playing through the new one for the trophies and I can safely say that old garret "steals" the show
Thief 4, hated the game, just hated it.
Original Garret voice did some voices in the old Zelda cartoon show series.
Russel is the OG thief, thi4f voice actor sounded like a noob
Old Garrett was all about paying his rent. New Garrett is just about being a klepto.
well cant expect a given up game to be salvaged effectively when they lose the actor.
