What this game still has over most other games - even to this day - is great aesthetics. Everything just oozes gothic moodiness, noir mystery and both occult and religious themes.

I've always loved the ending. Garrett makes a show of leaving the keepers and the response, "I will tell them nothing has changed. All is as it should be." I love that Garrett is this incredibly cool character in a world that really couldn't give a shit about that.

Pure art, the whole artstyle, narration, voice acting, sound design... I should not even start about how the game was THE first in so many aspects. What I love the most is the problem solving, without relying on violence like 99% other FPS games.

    • @katslitterbox

according to here (last post in thread) he was planning on removing technology and "light". Man used to be afraid of the dark and that fear motivated him, and now with technology that fear is gone. And the Trickster's plan to revive the darkness, is, the titular "Dark Project"
quote: "I have conceived of a plan to revive the darkness, to bring a resurrection of the ability to fear and dream. And, once my dark project is realized, they shall know again to fear and love their Lord."

So many games have a part when the protagonist gets captured and knocked down several pegs or at least loses nearly all of his gear. Half Life, Deus Ex, Bioshock, Dishonored, etc.
Thief was my first game and that cutscene gave me the shivers and I had to take a break for several hours. No other "capture" cutscene from another game can equal it. The only one that comes close is in Bioshock Infinite.

To embrace a cause, to grow fond or spiteful, is to lose one's balance,
after which, no action can be trusted.
Our burden is not for the dependent of spirit."
Thief and Thief II are masterpieces of gaming, atmosphere and poetry. These two games are the most beautiful creations in gaming history. I experimented with frame adding ones but they ALWAYS looked like complete butt because they don't understand the kind of movement the artist intended. (Maybe with modern "deep" AI they can be better). Imagine a guy stopping, and you add a new frame. Does the guy keep going? Does he stop immediately? Does he slow down linearly? With a curve? Those are all variations real artists use, and AI--especially without all original source layers to go on to tell them apart--have failed in my tests.

(TH-cam lost my original comment) Interesting idea! I don't think I see it the same way though.
I think the Builder, if not real, could be a man-made manifestation of the ideals of man toward technology. A personification/embodiment of man's thinking and infatuation with its own achievements (much like the gilded age, gilded ... gilded metal... "metal age"... wink wink). It could also be a false god used as a tool to control people. There's very much this air of hubris that man, through technology, has no need for nature or gods anymore. It's almost as if they took "the (christian) devil" and split him into two different devils. One, chaos, the trickster God. (Thief 1) The other, is order, (machines and people in heavily defined roles and positions). But both kind of represent a "gift" of knowledge to man. The Pagans (or Terrerians as you call them), nature and magic, trees grow everywhere they go with many warm creatures, building natural villages. The Builder, representing order, megacities made out of square plates of cold metal and tall cities.
But as far as we've seen, The Builder, if real, works behind the scenes. Then again, who would have thought the Trickster God would have been real until face to face with the demon himself?

@@katslitterbox Humans come from Nature's bounty of material and energy but we never forget (but so many people do forget) that despite these gifts Nature is also constantly trying to kill us with natural disasters and parasites and other organisms both enormous and microscopic. This game is magnificent in provoking the most primal existential questions. Such as the Dionysian/Apollonian struggle so well described by Rush in their song "Hemispheres". BTW, thank you for compiling these cutscenes. I have been playing Thief soundtracks as I fall asleep lately.

I'm going to be in the minority and say that I hate this. These are my favorite games, and their original cutscenes are good enough as they are. I'm not saying that as someone insisting on some nostalgia trip. 240p video shows in maximum fidelity exactly what it can and nothing more. It's not much but it's enough. 4k that is upscaled from 240p shows in extreme high fidelity something of which 99.07% is uneducated guesses by a dumb, unthinking computer that doesn't understand what it's looking at. You are just zooming in on machine-generated noise to see it as clearly as possible. The original had no misinterpretation. You could only see exactly what Daniel Thron wanted the cuscene to show, in low fidelity. An upscale consists almost entirely of misinterpretations, ones that are clear for everyone to see in extreme high resolution. I don't want to view indecipherable machine-learning-generated rubbish written on the side of Constantine's wine bottle in 4k. I want to not know what it says due to it being rendered in 240p.

you're picking on minor examples of text (despite the fact that the original art was certainly clear enough to read but then compressed for the videos, so returning it to clarity seems fair - and this version is readable, so quite how it's indecipherable or machine-learning-generated-rubbish is beyond me) to condemn an entire upscale? you think Thron wouldn't have made this a lot clearer if late 90s tech had allowed it? you genuinely think this consists "almost entirely of misinterpretations"? what, is garrett suddenly wearing a funny hat in half of these? where details are not simply noisy mush, the upscaling is excellent with a certain amount of grain, smearing and woolliness. hell, compare the live-action silhouette shots in the originals to these - fuzzy, noisy outlines compared to crisp, dark ones. why would you be ok with the loss of information and clarity forced by the transfer of the original art to the animated low-res versions, but not ok with restoring that information and clarity as best as possible? oh it's pointless

    • @Plutonia001

@@DaveDexterMusic It doesn't restore the information. It creates new data between small pieces of surviving information, and that creation is only informed by what is available. Very little is available and the system that creates the new data is not intelligent enough to interpret it correctly due to how little info there is. Saving from the original production clarity to low-res game assets produced things like aliasing effects, and instead of recognizing those as what they are, the computer interprets those effects as movement and creates high-res wobble in its stead. That is just one example, but the principle is the same across the board. I'd rather see exactly what was originally shipped with the game in low res, than see what a stupid computer misinterpreted and reproduced in extreme detail. A movie that ends abruptly without a proper conclusion is still better than an extended cut of it written by a 6-year-old.

Such an amazing game (and the sequel) very few games have ever had this level of atmosphere and story telling. It's surprising that a movie was not made, it could really be an excellent film if done right!

@@raskolnikov6443 I agree with you there! But I think it it had been made 10 years ago by competent film makers who respected the source material, then it could have been great, because the story is all there. But as you say, most likely modern Hollywood would seriously F it up.
