Update - Many of my viewers might have seen my video update about Gunnar and I when it comes to our relationship. If not, you can check it out here - th-cam.com/video/uTP503NEQqg/w-d-xo.html
I’m American, my husband German. We met in the States on a blind date 26 years ago. We are married 20 years today. I moved to Germany with three suitcases in 1999 and have been here ever since. Life is such a crazy ride sometimes!
I am Puerto Rican American and married a Finnish man. We met when he was doing research in the US and I ended up moving to finland. We were also long distance for a time but I was too happy with him to just give up.
Meskarune I’m 1st gen Puerto Rican American. My aunt came to America then sent for my mom. They were teenagers and the 2 sisters married 2 American Irish boys who were quite good looking. A friend of mine saw a pic of my dad when he was young. She said “is that your brother? Wow! He’s cute!” I said “no that’s my dad when he was my age.” She goes “darn I was going to ask you to introduce me.” I thought that was pretty funny. Never thought to tell my dad that. He would have been embarrassed!
I'm originally from New Zealand, I went to high school and university in Brisbane, Australia. I got a job teaching English as a second language in Chiba, Japan. I met my American husband, who was a physician in the Navy. I was working just outside of Tokyo and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. The distance was like I was working just outside of New York and he was in Florida. We had a long-distance relationship for about a year taking most days on the phone and flying to met each other every other month. While on vacation in Hawaii people asked if we were on our honeymoon! While on vacation in Australia together he proposed to me. We moved to the US and at first lived in Omaha, Nebraska, where he is from and got married. He had a variety of temp jobs in the mid-west. Then he got a job in North Carolina. Now we have been living in North Carolina for 17 years! We have been married for 18 years and have been together for 20 years!
Love that story! What part of NC? I would love to have traveled more than I ever did. And love the stories of international folks. I have lived in and around Asheville, NC, for most of my life.
@@mckohtz I also have an aunt, uncle, and cousins in Eastern NC. They live in Greenville. Much of my family attended ECU. I love the mountains here, but it's been nice to visit them a time or two, not too far away from the coast.

I live in the Bahamas and met my Romanian husband online. Married 5 years now with a two and a half year old son. Thanking God daily for the both of them. 🥰
RPI is definitely not a mainstream campus and is not for everyone or for the whole year. After spending a summer doing research there, I felt like I knew what I needed to know about Troy and most of Albany. When I returned to my alma mater my French professor told me how his son was trapped in a snowstorm while in school there. He said: Il ne m'a pas plu. Or something like that... But it was an awesome experience and met wonderful people there. And I would do it again while learning more of the area's history.
I loved hearing your story 💖 My husband is Egyptian and I’m American and we met on Facebook 🤭😅 Fast forward a year and half.. we get married, I move to Cairo and have been here for almost a year now 😍🙌🏼

I listened to every second of this totally captivated!!! It's so fun to hear how people met their spouses and it's beyond cool that you moved to that wonderful country.
I met my current guy in London, last year. I actually went to spend time with another guy I met in NY, and he totally flaked out on me. I ended up meeting this guy at the tail end of my trip. I had no expectations, I just wanted to get out, and he took me to this dive bar. I said, "Do you want some ice cream?"" He agreed (although he says he was ready to go home by then. So this is really random, but one of your videos was in my feed. I thought you looked fun and bubbly, so I watched it then searched your page and watched this one. I’m pretty sure I took your husband’s class in college when he was in Indiana. If so, he was an amazing professor. To this day (I’m 31) I’ll have something he said in class come to mind. I know this is random, but I always wished that I could express my thanks for being a great professor. I’m glad you both are happy and well, and I’m subscribing to your channel because you’re so fun! 2:48 a lot of Europeans who learn English as a second language usually learn it through British videos/audio clips/ or teachers. Vs the American way of annunciating.
Yep! When I lived in Belgium and was still learning Flemish, everyone had an English accent when speaking English. The only problem was when I would go to visit London, I'd immediately think "THIS is not English that they are speaking!". The cockney and other London neighborhood accents were just crazy!!! Nothing like the movies for sure. lol

Enjoyed your story time, thanks for sharing. My partner and I met at a local sports bar while I was mourning my relationship break up that had just happened a couple hours prior. We got married 2 years later and have been together for 12 years! We will be in Iceland the 3rd week of August and are looking forward to taking it all in. I just subscribed to your podcast and will be listening on our flight to Iceland.
Girl what!!! I just found your channel. My husband and I went to Iceland last year for the first time and loved it so I clicked on it. We are from Albany NY right next to RPI. My aunt works there as a dietician. Small world!! Maybe we will see you guys there next time we go back lol
Watched some of your other videos and i loved those, and then i got this video recommended and at first i wasnt sure i was going to sit through it (24 minutes about a relationship oh no!) but you told the story so well and it was so sweet and made me laugh, definitely going to stick around and some more videos :D
Love your story and openness!!!! I feel like you are a long lost friend and I have only viewed three of your videos. I’ll be visiting Iceland in either September or October and will be watching!!!! All the best and Thank YOU!
Long story…..I was on detached duty from the US military, working for the US State Department. I was posted to Nepal initially. Over the next 2 years, I worked security details in Pakistan, China (PRC), and South Korea. Unfortunately, I was sent back to Nepal after 2 years on a critical mission that was Confidential. The good news is I met my future wife there who was an Indian national teaching at a private girls boarding school. We married in Kathmandu before I returned to the US after one year. I never, never could have possibly imagined going to one of the remotest countries in the world and meeting my future spouse. She was the best thing that ever happened to me.
That is such a sweet story! I can relate to the weekend activities at RPI. I went to WPI for my engineering degree in the 1990s. It was 11:1 guys to girls then and weekend activities consisted of drinking and maybe watching movies on the VCR lol. Things had come a long way even a decade later from the sounds of it if it was 3:1 when you were at RPI. I met my husband in college. Same thing, we were really good friends first. That's the best way to do it in my opinion!
Beautiful story, me and my man met at work here in Stockholm, Sweden. He was also in another relationship and when that didn’t work out, We got togheter :)
My favorite part of "how we met" videos is reading all the comments and reading stories of how other people met their partners. Every one has a story and who doesn't love reading about love? Thank you all for sharing your stories here. PS: you have a new subscriber ;)
Haha pretending to have an English accent! I'm British and when I was younger, I would pretend to have an Australian accent whenever I went out....no idea why I did it haha glad to hear that there are other people in this world that did this too! Just a bit of fun.
It's the actor or actress in us all. Mainly, I believe we love differences. As for myself, I always love to have a boyfriends from a different state, different country or different continent than my own because, I love accents that are different from mine. To entertain myself, I love to imitate my ex boyfriend's" accents, their happy and angry faces. It's so hilarious to me because their facial expressions are so comical like the best cartoon character ever made. 😂😏🐯🐵🐸🐒🐷
Lol ... Listen I'm a Bahamian and I frequently used accents for the fun of it. Loved doing the British accent. In High School I fooled my friend's aunt to letting her go on a trip cause she thought I was the British Social Studies Teacher. She bought it and gave her consent for my friend to travel😁
I'd never heard the story about how you met your husband. I saw that you had a video about it and decided to watch it. This is such a sweet story. I'm glad that you decided to share it. Thank you.
That was lovely! so fascinating. I am British and met my French other half on line over 10 years ago. We met in Liverpool. I was on a course but after a year he moved to the UK but after a few years we move back to France, so Im here now! Good luck...x
As an Australian, when I was studying in Iceland for one month I met an Icelander, we fell in love, and we both intended to work towards marriage. I returned to Australia & we conducted a long distance relationship. I thought of transferring to Haskoli Islands to finish my PhD & he thought of transferring to a uni in New Zealand to finish his Masters. But ultimately, the distance was too difficult, we were a bit too young (26), we both had our own family commitments at home. So it didn't work out. He went on to marry an amazing woman, have gorgeous children, and I have met them all. We have a lovely friendship. But sometimes I do wonder: what would my life have been like if....?!
I am very particular about pronouncing names just right. My hardest time was trying to pronounce a name from Thailand. Also, I am pleasantly surprised at how well you express yourself in a personal manner to the camera. You have a really nice personality.
21:30 Being in close quarters vs. living apart are indeed two different things. And hunny, arguing is healthy when you love and care about someone. Your story was sooo good that I had to pause and make some green tea w/ginger. I look forward to more!!
Lovely story! And brave for you! And yes I would love to hear from him too, to hear about living there and the culture and things adored and so on, and maybe contrasting with your views too. Thank you for sharing your life! Iceland is in my soul, but alas I am stuck in the States, ever a visitor, gobbling up your content 😅😍
Thank you so much for watching and comment. I appreciate you sharing what you would like to hear about from him. Maybe one day it won't be so hard for U.S. people to move here.
OMG girl!! Such a find you are!! Thanks for sharing this story and sharing Iceland. I am learning Icelandic after becoming fairly fluent in Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. The spelling is different but pronunciation is so similar. Hope you share your hubby with us. You are a beautiful woman and strong spirit. I can see how Iceland embraced you.
I travelled to Iceland 3 years ago and absolutely adored it. We went in winter in order to see the Northern Lights. I had lived in the Canadian Arctic so had seen them before but reallllly wanted to go to Iceland. There, i really learned to appreciate the power of Nature. It was deeply impressive. I want to go back but covid.....

Yes! I’m completely interested in hearing from your husband! I just found your channel and am really enjoying all your videos! You have a great presence on camera. Thank you for taking the time to create your videos and share some of your life. 👍
I really do not know how your video popped up in my flow but it did. Thank's for sharing a great story of love in life and happenstance and fluke events and yet still trying to remain yourself while the tornado really hits the fan of emotions and reality. I had a similar story myself back in 1986 in China when I met my soon-to-be wife. I never told it in public though...I'm scared I wouldn't give it justice due to my lack of expressing myself in a personal and emotional way. Anyway...your story encourage me and gives me hope that one day I will be as brave as I find you to be and get it out there? I am 61, caucasian, european and proud of my three "hun-xue-er" which literary translates to "mixed-blood-kids". My name is Torbjörn and maybe Gunnar could help you trying to pronounce it. God bless and good luck up north.
Awh, I love a good love story. I have seen a few of your videos & passed this one by a number of times . But I'm glad I finally watched it. All the best to you & your husband. Maybe I'll visit you one day. 😊
I’m 71 years young and I’m not swallowing that pill about “oh, it’s all friends and all that.” You just don’t fly to a different city to spend “time” with a friend and the hug was like, oh, it just felt so right, da, la, la. Honey you had the subconscious hots from the night of the party. Just felt it was too different. End of story! SO, I’M VERY HAPPY FOR YOU! You see, you let the man take the lead! Your love light shines through ♥️
Whew! Ok ! I feel better now that I know “the rest of the story.” Cute, funny, romantic. I met my husband in Germany. We were both in the Army and he was my boss. Definitely married wayyy too fast. I never knew he was the picture beside the word “homebody” in the dictionary. Which really sucks because I like to travel (would prefer to go with my husband). But we’ve been together 45 years. God had more to do with that than anything. I ended up moving to Indiana which after having lived in the ‘burbs of Philly was difficult. So now we’re just trying to get him through chemo and I thank God he’s doing well. That is all that matters. Your hub sounds like he’d be interesting to talk to although he probably doesn’t see himself that way and I suspect part of the problem saying his name had to do with the vodka! Thanks for sharing. Definitely worth listening to just for the fun of learning about a different country and people. Your sis was spot on about arguing although my hub won’t argue and sometimes that makes me want to argue! 😝
C There are many women going though the same thing on Facebook. There are lots of " over 50 women" groups with ailing husbands. and single traveling women/ rv women groups also. These groups may be good support for you now.
I have no idea why your channel popped up in my feed, but I am so glad it did! This is my 3rd video of yours in a row and I’m going onto the 4th. What first attracted me to your channel is that when I was in undergrad one of my best friend’s was a woman named Hildur from Iceland. When I’m finished your videos, I need to drop her a note. Thank you!
I think this popped up in my recommended for a reason! I've always had this inkling that my life long partner is not American, like ever since I was a little girl I thought this lol. Of course though, as we get older we start to believe those little feelings less (and we're told that it'll never happen) and get caught up in the "but how?" With COVID that "but how?" has been coming up a lot lately, and very intensely, and then this video popped up! If it's meant to be, it'll happen, don't get fixated on the how. Thank you for sharing your story 💛
When someone introduced me to the now defunct WoW airline I was happy to go see Mom in England and looked forward to the stops in Iceland. Still want to do a real visit but my few hours at the airport still warm my heart.
What a great story! You were clearly meant to be together. ❤️🥰❤️ Coincidentally I also married an RPI grad. He lived in a house that was condemned not long after he and his roommates moved out. He does not have fond memories of living in Troy...especially after the winter when the furnace went out or the time that the basement filled up with sewage. 😆
Glad everything worked out because once you said he liked "open" relationships I know I would have left him alone. You are so nonchalant and energetic. He is lucky to have someone nice as you.
😂 I was in Toastmasters for a while and they used to count our filler words. They do slip out sometime but now I just wait when I don’t know what to say instead of filling the space with an unnecessary word.
My 10year old kid can't utter a single sentence without inserting several "ums" into it, and now I'm doing it. He's also turned into a raging uptalker, you also employ uptalk but in a pleasing proportionate way. If you ever tire of engineering perhaps you can teach kids how to speak, seeing as you do it well!
@@kristinjayne6720 It is that vile practice of turning every single sentence you utter into a question. It particularly plagues tiny house programs on TH-cam. Every sentence I hear is a question? And it drives me nuts? And we need to reinstate the Gulag for uptalk transgressions?

This is like a Soulmate experience.
They divorced.
Yay for love and coming to Iceland soon. I hope you have an awesome time! Thanks for checking out the podcast.
Aww, thank you so much. It's quite the journey that Gunnar and I went on to get to where we are now and I'm glad you enjoyed learning about it.
Life IS so strange sometimes! I agree... love this story. Thank you for sharing!
😂😂 it’s nice when people don’t take themselves too seriously.
When I was younger I would always change my name to something I believed was more mysterious. Veronica was my favorite. 😂😂
What an amazing journey. Life’s twists & turns are really cool!
And then, moving five years ahead in this video life...⚡⚡⚡🙏🙏🙏
I'd never heard the story about how you met your husband. I saw that you had a video about it and decided to watch it. This is such a sweet story. I'm glad that you decided to share it. Thank you.
I lived in Iceland in 1996, when I was stationed there. Icelandic people are so friendly. I'd love to meet an Icelandic man!
That was lovely! so fascinating. I am British and met my French other half on line over 10 years ago. We met in Liverpool. I was on a course but after a year he moved to the UK but after a few years we move back to France, so Im here now! Good luck...x
What a wonderful video. I looked her up and immediately subscribed. What a lovely soul and thoughtful way of communicating.
Thank you 🤗❤️
As an Australian, when I was studying in Iceland for one month I met an Icelander, we fell in love, and we both intended to work towards marriage.
Louise Trott oh that last big question.... everyone can relate ! 😊
.
Ohh how you missed the chance to get maary him Louise ..nice story some time it happens in life ..were do you presently aus or ice ?
I am very particular about pronouncing names just right. My hardest time was trying to pronounce a name from Thailand.
Also, I am pleasantly surprised at how well you express yourself in a personal manner to the camera. You have a really nice personality.
Well you are glowing when you talk about your husband, so it is fantastic , your having met each other and married. That's super! I love that.
21:30 Being in close quarters vs. living apart are indeed two different things. And hunny, arguing is healthy when you love and care about someone. Your story was sooo good that I had to pause and make some green tea w/ginger. I look forward to more!!
Such a beautiful story! Thank u for this. I love hearing about people from such different parts of the world coming together.
Loved hearing your story! Also I appreciate you saying that arguing is healthy for relationships and being honest about that section. 😀
😊 thanks
This is a beautiful story! I look forward to watching more about your learning the language. I think Icelandic is beautiful but very unusual!
Thank you 😊
That was AMAZING! Thank you for sharing your journey together with Gunnar with us
My pleasure and thanks for watching. 😊
he is a very lucky guy! love this story!
Very good story! You're a good storyteller. Love it!
Just came across your video.... you are adorable, love your chatty, open, friendly persona... :)
That is very sweet of you to say 😊
I love the way you tell this story. Beautiful. Destiny..
the two of you are very lucky!! I think you are special and I am assuming he is to. So enjoy ur life together!
Lois Cassels sane here
Wow....That is one of the BEST how I met stories ever....
Been watching your videos to prep for an Iceland trip with my husband. And I just stumbled upon this video, and I just gotta say that you tell your love story so well! Very entertaining! love it. Cheers!
Such a beautiful story, I cried.
They divorced.
Your laugh/giggle is the best 💙
😂 thanks
Hi, love your videos. I am born in NYC myself but live in Reykjavík. I am in a long distance relationship with a lady from Kenya. She plans to move to Iceland and I already sent her one of your videos. I am sure she will be thrilled to see it. I subscribed coz I don't want to miss anything!
Interested ! Yes ! Would love to see the hubby! Thanks for sharing :-) it’s a beautiful world with lots of interesting people & places.
Yes! I’m completely interested in hearing from your husband! I just found your channel and am really enjoying all your videos! You have a great presence on camera. Thank you for taking the time to create your videos and share some of your life. 👍
Thank you for the lovely comment and watching. I hope to get a video up with him in it soon. :-)
I'm so very sorry about you two going your separate ways. 😔🙏🏽
Nice story! I'm from Scotland and moved to Iceland in 2013 to be with my Icelandic husband. :-)
Wow! What a story! You are so beautiful. I’ve been to Iceland and the people were SO friendly. Love your channel.
Your love light shines through ♥️
😂😂
That is a really cute story!! It's so funny how life just works!
Thanks! Yes, life is fascinating.
To go from NYC to Iceland says a fair bit about Gunnar, and says so much about your generosity of spirit, and guts!
Hello from trinidad 🇹🇹 yes definitely want to see gunnar
Hello 👋🏾
Whew!
This sounds like a love story from When Harry Met Sally. Very cute.
Thank you!
Right! I am so glad i found it though... so nice and heartwarming on this cold Canadian evening 😂
Vdoka is my drink too. Nice story.....I'm single right now but open to attracting my life partner in divine timing.
You are a breath of fresh air. I love your videos!!
Thank you so much. 🤗
When someone introduced me to the now defunct WoW airline I was happy to go see Mom in England and looked forward to the stops in Iceland. Still want to do a real visit but my few hours at the airport still warm my heart.
Awesome story, you're such a beautiful, intelligent and articulate woman...I can easily see why he would fall for you.
Beowulf that’s very sweet of you to say.
@@AllThingsIceland I just call it like I see it dear lady.
What a great story! You were clearly meant to be together.
❤️🥰❤️
Coincidentally I also married an RPI grad. He lived in a house that was condemned not long after he and his roommates moved out. He does not have fond memories of living in Troy...especially after the winter when the furnace went out or the time that the basement filled up with sewage. 😆
Thank you for watching and for the lovely compliment.
Oh no!! LOL Sorry to hear that happened to your husband while at RPI.
You’re so funny. “ I didn’t know a damn thing about Iceland”. That sounds like something I would say.
LOL
Glad everything worked out because once you said he liked "open" relationships I know I would have left him alone. You are so nonchalant and energetic. He is lucky to have someone nice as you.
😂 I totally understand. I was shocked when he said that but it all worked out in the end.
Was his English teacher from England? Many times overseas they learn British English and sometimes they pick up the accent.
UGH! How do you not say “umm” or “uh” at all? Why kind of sorcery?
😂 I was in Toastmasters for a while and they used to count our filler words. They do slip out sometime but now I just wait when I don’t know what to say instead of filling the space with an unnecessary word.
All Things Iceland It’s mesmerizing!! Definitely mastered a great skill!
Colin Macdonald what’s an uptalker? I haven’t heard of that.
@@kristinjayne6720 It is that vile practice of turning every single sentence you utter into a question. It particularly plagues tiny house programs on TH-cam. Every sentence I hear is a question? And it drives me nuts? And we need to reinstate the Gulag for uptalk transgressions?
You such positive energy! I would love to see you & your husband on video!
You are so delightful! Lucky you to live in Iceland. I Hope you and your husband have a wonderful life there!
You are an incredibly bright light we all need in this dark world. Keep shining 🥰
Thank you 🤗
Kellie yes world is curel ..shines is necessary ..
