  • Mortars and pestles made of brass have been a fixture of apothecaries, chemists, alchemists, and herbalists' shops since the Middle Ages. Their strength, robust nature and inability to spark made them preferable to the stone and ceramic mortars which were prone to smashing and chipping.
If you want to find out more about them, go to my blog at www.throughouthistory.com and follow my blog, and my TH-cam Channel :)

Nicely informative video. Even though I'm an antique brass/bronze freak myself (and I absolutely love mortars) I definitely learned a few new things from this. You've earned a subscriber!

Awesome video. I found one almost identical to the first one shown in the goodwill bins. Bought it for a dollar a pound, whatever that adds up to. Unfortunately the pestle wasn't with it

    I own one.
I was born in Saudi Arabia and parents brought a lot of brass home.

Are they food grade and safe for human health?

Not sure about that, but sets like these (and I have more, now) were used for making medicines and pills and stuff. I imagine they were also used for making foods.
