Mortar and pestle are still essential tools in modern kitchens. All those spice grinders integrated in little jars in supermarkt shelves? Laughable! A granite mortar may look primitive and heavy. But when it comes to grinding hard ingredients with freely choosable roughness, they still are far superior.
The molcajetes from Mexico are similar but not painted, my mom bought me one and I had to " break it in" by grinding rice in it until no stone dust came out of it.
molcajete and granite mortars are very different tools! the former are made from rough, porous stone, and best suited to mushing and grinding tough, fibrous plant matter into a paste. (making salsa) the latter are much smoother and harder, and way better at pounding and crushing hard, dry ingedients into fine dust.

In Malays we call it as “Lesung batu”. This ancient food processor exist pretty much at every corner of the world means we are sharing same great great great-mother. We are family
Can you do a video on some primitive building techniques? how linen is made from plants, how to weave furniture, how bricks are made, how pottery is made from clay, etc. I think a lot of those techniques are almost like forgotten technology because we have better technology people often don't learn those skills anymore and rely on technology. Also a molecular gastronomy series would be cool too all about science of food similar to what heston blumenthal does
Not to mention I didn’t see grinder guy wearing a respirator. That granite dust will eff up your lungs. I live in the U.S. and am always amazed at what I take for granted as standard workplace precautions.
Is it safe to eat the rock dust from a mortar and pestle? when I crush spices microscopic particles of rock also go into the food it's almost impossible to avoid getting rock dust in your food even after seasoning the mortal and pestle and washing it with water
As long as you're not ingesting entire spoonfuls of dust, it is entirely harmless. Your body will just not absorb the stone, and will pass it as waste within a day or so with no lasting ill effects. Keep in mind, people have been using these sorts of tools in basically the exact form and materials they are today, for thousands of years. Only when the tools are made from toxic ingredients (such as lead in ancient Rome), did they ever cause any health problems.
I think it is much more safe to eat particles of stone from that or wood from a wooden desk than microplastic from the plastic desk, which is made by cutting vegetables on that desk.
So maybe OSHA skipped this job sight? Yes I know it’s not in the U.S. but good lord can we get the man a respirator and into a standing position and some eye protection?
the fact that this is so satisfying which comes from the hard work of the artisan
Ironic that he’s using power tools to make something that is essentially an ancient food processor
