  • Finding rivals to pitch the Nissan GT-R against on circuit is tough - its performance far outstrips traditional foes at its £78k price point. But what about the king of the super saloons, the BMW M5? We find out which is quicker round the challenging turns of Anglesey Circuit.

    So basically a RWD vs. 4WD battle. Both are great but after 7 years, I'm still smitten by the GTR's cold-blooded, assasin-like speed.

    • @Tiltix
      @Tiltix 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      well it's also a sportcar vs a saloon that has lots of power. It's obivious that the gtr wins. (Just saying before the gtr army strikes down on me)

      ***** Sure, the M5 is no where near agile enough to pop in and out of traffic. Are you trying to outrun the cops? Does the GTR really give that extra edge in street driving? Please. I want interior build quality, I want my money to not just go to the mechanics but the other elements that a car at that price should have. There is a reason why everyone doesn't drive around WRXs but they like GTIs with far less performance, its a much more well rounded car because they actually try and make the car livable.
      And is the GTRs seating position actually significantly lower then the M5?

    crazy that the GTR with 550hp and AWD is not even 1 second faster than the 350hp base model Porsche 911. That's 200HP more and can't shave 1 second

      The driver did mention that it was the first time driving a GT-R and that he was not used to the all-wheel drive system that the GT-R contains. He mentioned that it was going to take him "a while longer to work that out".

    • @weed46
      @weed46 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alfredo Garcia if a professional driver is having hard time to learn the car, good luck with your random buyer. GTRs always had some mild understeer mid corner since 2007 generation

    • @weed46
      @weed46 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brad That's the price you pay for having a very complex AWD, or do you expect to be AWD and still have the same weight as a pure RWD only car? That's why a Carrera S is lighter than a Carrear 4s, and why a gallardo 4WD is lighter than the 2WD version. GTR AWD is vey heavy due to it's complexity
      Power to weight ratio on the GTR is still way better than 911. GTR is 1740kg, 911 is 1400kg, that is less than 20% less weight. But the GTR has more than 50% more power. so the GTR has more hp per kg of weight, it just looses all in the corners
      Put both GTR and Base 911 in a straight line, and you'll see the 911 getting totaly murdered.

  • @pranavmukesh

    I have to say, because of the way the industry is heading, GT-R is getting more and more appealing. I'm all about manual transmission, "analog cars". But it seems we are doomed to paddle gearboxes and launch controls and I would really love to have a car which did it first (well, not first but you know what I mean). And it's still doing it better then the most to this date. Love it or hate it GT-R has become a legendary car already.

    • @HesteBremse
      @HesteBremse 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I´m actually a BMW fan, but the GT-R was already became legendary shortly after it was launched. It changed the game just like the Bugatti Veyron did when it first landed. Though the GT-R is keeping it´s ground extremely well, I can´t keep wondering if Nissan will bring on new GT-R platform and if then when. I would wish that Nissan would bring a much lighter car to the table - I would say they need too within the next 3-5 years.

    • @HenrySk8r
      @HenrySk8r 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HesteBremse It depends what you're into. When I look for a car, I don't look for something with all those electronic aids and soulless features. A GT-R does everything for you, it feels more like playing a video game than driving a car. The most important attribute about a car is SOUL and PASSION. If a car doesn't have that, then there is no driver feedback and connection.

    • @HesteBremse
      @HesteBremse 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elliott Rollins Yea well I never drove a GT-R but what you say is no new perspective on the GT-R in fact I´m sorry to say that your comment sounds rather bland and stereotype even that it might be true - If you had GT-R or another supercar you properly would not give a shit about this thread. And btw what I wrote has nothing to do about what one is into - It´s just a more or less accurate fact about the GT-R at the moment of it´s rebirth - I do not say that I like it over other cars or that it is better - Just that it changed the game at that moment in time thus raising the question what Nissan would come up with for a third generation GT-R. And The most important attribute about a car is not necessarily SOUL and PASSION, that is rather subjective as well, E.g. for a Family it might be Security and Economy. I can´t even figure why you responded to my reply which such a subjective and stereotype comment.

  • @fifthgear93
    @fifthgear93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    A stupid comparison. The GT-R is a supercar while the M5 is a sportier version of a luxurious sedan.

    • @MidEnginedSedan
      @MidEnginedSedan 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      +1. The only people who are interested in an M5, are people with families. But no family will ever consider buying a GT-R for that purpose. This comparison is just lame EVO.

    • @fifthgear93
      @fifthgear93 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MidEnginedSedan Maybe their point was that both cars are similarly priced, but still this test was pointless, we all know that the M5 is gonna lose. It obviously has no chance.

    • @MidEnginedSedan
      @MidEnginedSedan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      fifthgear93 It's painfully obvious that price was the deciding factor for making this comparison. But a GT-R was always going to spank a family sedan on a race track. And a coupe was never going to be a family's vehicle of choice. They might as well have made a match between chocolate bars vs pens. You can buy them for the same price, so it *must* be a valid comparison, right?
      Weak EVO, very weak.

    In terms of displacement, number of cylinders, forced induction, and the 4WD, the Porsche 911 Turbo S (991) is a more suitable rival than the ///M5 for the GTR. Anyway what were they expecting, a 25hp advantage isn't going to offset a 200kg handicap.

    Much like the Renault Megane RS, the GT-R is not just about the power, it's about traction and handling. That's why they often beat cars with 30% more power or better power-to-weight ratio. This level of chassis design is pure art and any true car enthusiast must at least recognize and respect the engineers who did it, if not like the cars themselves.

    This review sums up why I wouldn't ever get a GTR. It's really not as involving throttle-wise in the limit as other cars in that price range or below it, and its tendency to push in the corners is unappealing.
    Although the M5 is slower, the involvement it demands of the driver to get the most out of it is more rewarding, and at the end of the day, that makes the driving experience more fun.

    It's kind of an apples and oranges battle this week. AWD vs RWD. Coupe vs saloon. Hammer vs scalpel. Etc. Etc.
    The BMW chassis dynamics are more refined and intuitive than the GTR. It conveys much more information to the driver. Granted it takes more work and skill to get it around the track as can be seen with how involved Francitti is sawing at the wheel. The GTR's trump card is it's sophisticated AWD system that generates wormholes between the turns. Too bad you'll never see AWD on a true M car...

    M5 every day as a car that involves you in controlling oversteer is more fun to drive than a faster car that understeers.
    Not to mention design, inside and out, and overall user experience...

      also look at the damping and suspension adjustment of track pack GTR, looks like the GTR is doing it best........... GTR can't win in a track with long straight and super tight corners unless it lower in height and lighter.

    I'm actually quite surprised that a BASE porsche 911 carrera is only a second slower than the almighty GTR, (given that it has almost 200hp less)
    I wonder how close would a Porsche 911 4S given that they have similar prices.
    I know it's a very different story in a straight line, but it seems that those porsches are incredible cornering.

    I love how most of the tests of this kind of car are track (or fantasy road) based. Yet nearly none of the people who are going to throw £80k at a car will put them round a track - even less of them will push them very hard. Why not test them pottering around town, commuting to work, carrying a family, shopping, school runs, etc with the odd bit of boot to a hundred-ish as most owners will use them?

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cause who the hell wants to watch that? If you're really watching these videos because you want to buy one of these cars, then you are much better off going on a test drive.

    • @hunghuge7717
      @hunghuge7717 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ewt415 Well since carbuyer's channel has plenty of subscribers I would say there's some legs in it. Obviously we want to see them like this but saying one is better than the other purely on track merit is just silly. No one buys this kind of car just as a track car.

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hung huge How is saying one is better on the track silly? It shows how well the engineers made the car, and how well the car performs when pushed to the limit. Sure, most people will not reach the limit on public roads, but the fact that a car has a higher limit or an easier to control limit than another makes it a better car in this aspect. That something that is important to know, something that isn't useless at all.
      And keep in mind, this is a TRACK battle. Like how carbuyer only focuses on everyday usage, this series only focuses on track time and feel at the limit. If you look at EVO reviews, you'll see that they don't do everything at the track; they also tell you how it feels to drive on public roads.

    The lap time of the m5 competition package is strange because a standard m5 can do a 1:18.58! And as tested by sport auto and carmagazine south Africa, the competition package is around half a second quicker around a small twisty track than the regular m5!

    I can´t help thinking that these two cars does not match but perhaps i´m wrong. With the M5 one gets a full four door sedan, it can be your track fun car and it can be used as a family car. The GT-R is more focused as a Super Sports Coupe, but off course it works extremely well as a daily driver too, just not so much as a family car. Matching the GT-R Against the M6 would perhaps be more adequate, but I can´t remember difference in the numbers between the M5 and M6 (perhaps not big) and the GT-R would almost certainly win over the M6 too.

    I really don't understand all the fanboys rejoicing by the fact that their GT-R beat a LUXURY SEDAN, yes a LUXURY SEDAN by that low margin... WTF?
    Just to put things in perspective, the time difference between the 458 Speciale and the GT-R, which are in the same league, both are sports cars with more or less the same specs, is almost the same than the difference between the GT-R and the BMW M5, which are cars that have NOTHING to do with each other, one is a Luxury Sedan, and the other a sports car.
    If anything, this time difference should be humiliating for the GT-R.
