Hi Kiki, you are right to just go over the top as it will be covered when you glue the tiles on and grout. If you are going to be using the table outside, apply a coat of water sealant to finish. Hope this helps!

Be sure to water proof your surface before adhering tiles.
Grout and adhesive contain a lot of water....eventually mold will set in.
