      He said the previous versions were not. When I looked there we no holes on the other side without the clip. I could be wrong. D2 is a nice upgrade too.

    Something about this blade shape.. mesmerizing. And with the absence the choil, looks even nicer. I just got an itchy finger to hit that "submit order" button. Thanks Dicey!

  • @CytoplasmicGoo
    @CytoplasmicGoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you on the choil, I never use it as my fingers are thicker and I will easily get bit if I do. I think spyderco is the only company that do usable choils. I had the OG with the choil, used it for a day cutting plastic sheathing and rosin paper and the material kept getting caught on the dumb choil and would tear the paper or the knife would bind up in the plastic. Oh yeah, same with shipping I think they’re all the way in California but they got it to me real quick here in NYC.

    Upgrading the steel... Might as well upgrade the handles too. G10 would be nice. Civivi can do it at the price. Thanks for the review.

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Civivi don't, do they, Blaise? Wyvern FRN, 50 bucks; or circa 50 bucks with Chinese 9CR18 blade alloy, your choice of models. And G10, as in 'the usual', is *not* better... it is 'different' (and heavier; and dirt grabbing; and and often takes color rather poorly; and is typically quite nick-able, scratch-able). Either preference is valid... subjectively.
      The cut, feel and finish on my orange LionSteel T.R.E. G10's single G10 scale is a whole 'nother story... but that is a circa $200 knife.

    Judging by how the grinding line crossing the fore finger choil on the 8Cr model, it is too thin to be a good finger choil.

    More interested now that you can flip the clip. D2 is a nice step up. Strange that D2 has become a budget steel in the last 20 years.

    Great review, I have a Honey Badger inbound.
    There is nothing wrong with 8cr for working knives though and I wish reviewers would stop making out there is. As long as the knife is priced in line with the cost of the steel it ain’t an issue.

    I just had a conversation with them via e-mail and learned that the D2 versions (two models) are left/right carry/pocket clip swappable. They said "soon" all the models will be ambi-carry!

    Ontario Rat 2 aus-8 $33.00. Ontario Rat 2 D 2 $37.00.
    (*$5.00 charge for the upgraded Steel)
    Honey badger medium 8Cr13MoV $34.00.
    Honey badger medium D2 $55.00
    (*$21.00 or the upgraded Steel)
    😕Hmmmm!
    Both are great knives in the D2, too bad Honey Badger doesn't have a $5 upgrade charge like OKC.
    Thank you for the review✌.

    How about a Honey Badger D2 vs. Civivi Wyvern death match, Bryan?

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One, Ganzo is probably going to be in a different carry weight class for comparable blade sizes. So I chose to suggest an FRN centric, apples to apples comparison of currently 'hot' models. I prefer to prioritize weight and bulk minimalism as a performance characteristic, myself. And for a form follows function guy, that's also a "beauty" factor. I very much like, and generally prefer among the brand's offerings, my FRN/FRCP Spyderco lightweights, e.g.
      Two, I don't think Bryan's thing is sorting out the tricky metallurgical issues and variabilities associated with Chinese D2 heat treating protocols, etc.

  • @andrewhaley8992
    @andrewhaley8992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Call me what you will, but I would pick a good heat treatment 8cr13mov over D2. I have a lot of D2 blades, that are not consistent and hard to sharpen. Love the original HB. Good video, looking forward to Blade Show bro😂

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just for the well considered alternative perspective, I'll take the FRN (or FRCP) for the lighter weight, especially; plus durability vs. dings, scratches, & wear... and ease of maintenance. Form follows function in my book [design pro].
      Luv my Spyderco LWs, although FRN feel and finish varies a bit among their models: the Stretch (1) ZDP and the new salt version of the Native 5 -- the best in this respect, in my experience (along with that on the small, Euro-centric slip joint models). Endura & Manix 2, the dodgiest fit 'n' finish. The black G10 on the Para 3 I had here briefly (!) looked fit for the tread mat on a Wal-Mart exercise machine -- ugly... rough edges... dirt catcher... just no!

    But China D2 isnt that great.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wheaten Zoomies it has. Problem is, it performs like poo in comparison to other steels that can heat treatment better. D2 from China sucks.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wheaten Zoomies then you'd be fine with whatever is cheapest.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wheaten Zoomies I dunno but if d2 costs more avoid it over 12c27n or aus8. D2 is harder to heat treat in China and harder for people to sharpen. The other steels will keep an edge longer cutting say cardboard and be easier to sharpen. D2 can be heat treated correctly in small batches. So good for custom knives where performance then shows.
