In 1955 Mahalia Jackson sang at Morris Brown AME Church in my hometown of Charleston, SC. It was in the dead of winter, cold, and I had the flu. However, I took the city bus from where I lived and walked about five blocks to the church just to see and hear her sing. I was 14 at the time. Was it worth it? Yes, Lord!!!
Lord i need this song right now. I've had a rough year. Since July 2017. I've lost Mamma, Granny, 2 baby nephews and now my oldest son. Father i need you to hold me and make me whole. I haven't lost sight of you. It's just that I've lost the closest people to me all in 1 year. Hold my hand and strengthen me through this pain. Pieces of my heart that cannot be replaced.
What a golden heart. If she were alive now, she would face intolerance due to her religious beliefs, not from her ethnicity. Selfishly I wish she were still alive, to listen to her. But for her peace and reward, I am content that she is in eternal paradise, singing to the glory of God.
chane kawaihae You too, will be old. Time doesn't stop for anybody, not even you. Now go back to mommy's basement troll. I'm sure your mommy's food stamps will not run out next month.
I was 7 years old when I first heard this powerful message. I was in foster homes.one after the other. As of this day I still sing this powerful message. Ms Jackson was truly gifted. Her style help me cry out to this invisible God as a child. Jesus pray for us everyday. She kept it simple for many lost sheep like me He is a on time God.
Mahalia was a servant of the lord who stacked her coins, too. She had several business ventures including a chain of fried chicken restaurants all over the south. Her life was tragically cut short the way so many Black entertainers' lives were cut short: Overwork, no rest. She spoke about "working herself to death" a few years before she died while attending the funeral of Nat King Cole who she said died from the same thing.
This song was written by Thomas Dorsey after his wife died during childbirth and his child died three weeks later. So powerful the lyrics that I know can see why Thomas Dorsey is called the father of gospel music! Thanks!
After that tragedy, he turned away from God and gospel writing and back to jazz. Then one day when he was waiting for a meeting, there was an empty room with a piano. He sat down and this song came pouring out of him. At least that's the way I heard the story. This is my all-time favorite gospel song. It's so beautiful and simple, speaking directly to God.
I heard that sometimes when Martin Luther King felt he needed uplift, he would call his friend, Mahalia Jackson, and ask her to sing him this song over the phone, which she did. And of course, it worked.
According to Jesse Jackson, who was present, King's last words on the balcony before his assassination were spoken to musician Ben Branch, who was scheduled to perform that night at an event King was attending: "Ben, make sure you play 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord' in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty."
She is credited with starting the I Had a Dream section of his speech. She is behind him and you can hear her say "tell them about the dream Martin, tell them about the dream" and off he went.
what a wonderful life that must have been. And what a precious memory for you. Make sure you tell your family so the story is told for generations after.
I'm a Muslim. I know this is a Christian gospel song...but i still like it..its just an art tho..first time i listened to her voice was in the movie Mississippi Burning
+Kiara Leos who are you to judge the quality, or degree of her modesty? oh that's right, another self righteous, smug religious person. mahalia thanks you for accepting her level of modesty.
there is a deeper understanding behind this...I encourage you to get to know the holy one we sing about...which is Jesus...he loves you and wants you to come to him....he is loving and he is holy...He can deliver you from your situations....please taste and see that the Lord is good
Dear, Pritampaul...You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate Mahalia & her Spirituality. I cld never find any of the Man Made Religions to suit me, but, Spirituality involves many forms & I've loved Mahalia's singing since I wz 12 yrs old. I'm pushin 71 yrs of age now, still enjoying messages frm many beliefs..Maybe, just maybe...I'll one day be able to sing with Mahalia. I'd LOVE that, but, I'm in NO RUSH! LOL ;)
When Mahalia Jackson sang Heaven was quiet, the angels stood in complete silence and Father God looked over to Jesus and said just listen my son just listen!
Let us all honor this precious soul by praying America returns to God. The tired, the weary, the downtrodden of the world look to America for hope. If America continues down the present path away from God, the world will have little to hope for. This precious soul devoted her life to the Lord. Let us too.
it is interesting to note, that a great singer like Mahalia Jackson would not be received by the gospel circle today. She just stood and singed, and allowed the spirit of God to come forth, she did not have a gimmick, no autotune, no dancing, no fancy clothes. Just beautiful melody, and great lyrics. This is authentic gospel music
I met Ms. Jackson a number of times as a 12-14 year old on a television variety program in Los Angeles during the 1960ties. Unlike all other celebrities there she took the time to sit and talk to me as an adult. She very clearly expressed to me a future where young people could build a new world in which race was irrelevant. She was the most spiritual and finest person I have ever known, with no bitterness or anger. I have done well but only wish I could have lived my life more like her.
Roger James yes,Roger, thanks for such a true post of Mahalia. Feel this song and meaning all down in my spirit and soul. You have to had, been thru something in life to get feeling and real meaning of this song and feel Mahalia. Spirit of Mahalia Jackson live for ever.
We children born during the 59 in MEMPHIS could only listen to Mahalia Jackson RECORDS ON AN OLD RECORD PLAYER. no blues, secular music. Only MJ. HOW WE GOT OVER
19 year old white guy, not religious at all. But as a son of Montgomery, Alabama, I can't help but burst into tears every time I hear her sing this. Jeez.
This was the Johnny Cash show he had so much respect for her, he wouldn't let them interrupt her singing (or make her speed it up) for a commercials break especially when she sang Precious Lord.
My grandmother loved this song. She passed away in 2008 and I miss her all the time...thank you for sharing this beautiful music sung by an amazing lady.
I heard Miss Mahalia sing when I was a boy and loved it. Not just hearing her wonderful voice, but watching her face. I could tell she was loving Jesus while she was singing. She has been singing in Heaven a long time, but one day, I will get to sing with her and love Jesus, too, and do it in His presence. Hallelujah!
Today is my grandmother's birthday and the 3 month anniversary of her passing away. I sang this at her funeral because it was one of her favorites. Glad this could bring a smile to my face.
No one sings this song like Sister Mahalia NO ONE, Powerful, sings from the heart . I love how she riffs , lovely Praise God, for her and such a Beautiful song.
Amen sister. Believe you me, such powerful words you commanded with you your statement. I wish I can live this life you say in the name of the Lord. Bless.
Anyone not moved by this just can't be moved. The look in her eyes and cry in her voice showed she was singing this to God and not just an audience. R.I.P. Your journey's done and God has welcomed you home. Thank you for sharing this priceless performance.
Horace Gulley Jr. Yes Horace, thanks for 👂a heartfeltQueen post. This year 2017, I need this daily. But I must say Dr. C.L. Franklin can work with song, So glad I know God and Holy Ghost filled.Live on Spirit of Queen Mahalia Jacksn
jane brooks Praise the LORD Jane!! I know that it has been several years since you posted about the death of your husband, but I wanted to say that I am so happy that we have such awesome TECHNOLOGY & that you were able to mourn the loss of your dear loved one via the Technology of utube!!! I pray as you journey on, that you too will say like Mahalia Jackson did: "I thank GOD HE has me by the hand!!! Leading & Guiding me, when I don't know just what to do🎉🌋🎊 GOD bless you & may Heaven continue to shine upon all that you say & do...You are loved with an everlasting love!!!!! John 3:16 Lynette D. Even though religion has been seen as a control tool in this country, they will never ever ever ever let this type of music reach the masses again. It gives too much hope and inspiration.
when i was a little girl in the late fifties and my older siblings were at school, my Mom used to put her Mahalia records on and clean house. We lost Mom last year but I know she's with Mahalia & the angels now, singing to Jesus. It's okay, I'll be with them soon enough but I can't listen to Mahalia without mourning over Mom now.
Every word of her song is the most humble prayer. She revels not in any glory for her sake, but to praise her Lord and King. When she raised her eyes, it is to acknowledge him; otherwise she bows her head in sacred reverence. There is no more reverent and truly Christian singer in the 20th century.
Elemental and incontrovertable. You can't escape her power and scope. She sings not for herself but for a greater power. What an example. Such talent and yet laid at the feet of God.
:( I hope him the best, so sorry to hear. Losing a mum would probably be the hardest hurdle in the majority of peoples lives. At least she's not in pain anymore, sorry for your husbands loss.
Knice: These songs came out of knowledge of the pain and suffering Jesus did on the cross to pay our price, and just how much we owe Him for our ability to walk through this life free, in the knowledge that no matter what the struggles, He has our hand.
What you wrote hit my spirit and I felt the power of those words. . . . knowledge of the pain and suffering Jesus did on the cross to pay our (MY) price, and just how much we (I) owe Him for our ability to walk through this life free. . . Amen! You go me shoutin up in here.
When my mother was dying of cancer she wanted to hear me sin this to her all the time. I love Mahalia Jackson for this soul stirring son. Now my aunt is dying my mothers sister so you know I had to here this song and cry.
My mother introduced me to Ms. Jackson's music when a was a little girl. She used to sing just like her. I love my Mommy ❤️ and Ms. Jackson has a beautiful voice!!!!!! 😍
This music was nourishment to my family when we were growing up. As long as I can remember,we listened to gospel music. Many times we had no food or we were cold because we had no heat. Mom would play some gospel music and this comforted us. We all grew up loving this music. It drew us close to God. Precious memories of my Mom because many times these songs would dry her tears. We thank you for this music, the songs ,the comfort, the messages and the assurance it bought us. Especially for Mom.
My father was in the army we spent most of the time overseas in Germany and France an Austria. we'd get up on Sunday mornings and have Church at home in living room. We all had to read a Scripture and explain as best we could at our ages. my mother sung this song. she loved this song she sang it and now I am 60 years old' and I can still see her singing that song. It was just beautiful, she had a wonderful voice and when I heard Mahalia, I thought, oh my gosh thats that song my mom used to sing.
SOMETIMES SOME STORMS IN YOUR LIFE IS SO BRUTAL IT HITS YOU IN YOUR VERY!!! SOUL YOU HAVE TO CRY OUT FROM THE BOTTOM AND IN THE DEPTHS OF YOUR VERY SOUL AND SAY LORD TAKE MY HAND AND LEAD ME HOME.
My Mother didnt go to church every Sunday, but she was The greatest to me! So farewell Moma! I try to tell these young people, Your Mother is your greatest Friend, and when she is gone, u have no other frien but Jesus.
Ms. Mahalia Jackson's songs are what helped a lot of our ancestors through... I'm glad to know that so many people came to hear her version even if it was because of the Ledisi/Beyoncé controversy...
Her voice is like molasses; sweet, rich and powerful. Praise the Lord for her. This is wonderful, Christ honoring music that stirs the heart, and elevates it to God; unlike much of what is called Christian music today. God bless you for posting it.
My mother introduced me to Mahalia's singing. And my dad always awakened us kids to "Peace in the Valley" and other Christian songs every Sunday. We need more singers to sing more Christian Hymns and songs, especially in the united States. Our federal government [especially the judiciary] flagrantly violates our constitution and 1st amendment by trying to exclude God and His Word from our public schools and squares. May God raise up more singers of Christian songs. Thanks to the Poster for this video/music.
I found out today that my lifelong friend, Bonnie Morgan Griffith, passed last evening. I will miss our marathon telephone conversations. Bonnie and I were born the same day in the same year. We attended the same junior and senior high school. I will really miss her. R.I.P. Bonnie.
Jimmie Byrd I guess that is why I tuned in my grandmother use to play Mahalia when I was a little girl and when I first came to Canada her songs use to comfort me because I didn't have my mother or grandmother to guide me spiritually and protect me so I got emotionally abused, physically abused, sexually abused and spiritually abused which made me afraid to trust people with my heart and today I thank God that I have found my peace back and my purpose.
Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near When my light is almost gone Hear my cry, hear my call Hold my hand lest I fall Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home When the darkness appears and the night draws near And the day is past and gone At the river I stand Guide my feet, hold my hand Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home (lead me home)
A member of my church here in Louisville used to sing backup to Mahalia Jackson and ray Charles. She died a few years ago and she sounded just like Mahalia. First time she sang at church it was like Mahalia was up there. Tore the entire church up. People shouted like I've never seen!!!! Passing out and everything!!!!
I've only read the first page of comments (not about to take hours to read over 1.250), but some of the comments on this GOSPEL video are astounding (language, etc.). I also don't understand the 337 people who listened to this and then "disliked" it. I'll be first to admit that I live far from a perfect life, but when it comes to listening to songs such as this - any that Mahalia Jackson sings - it humbles me, and at least for the moment, takes me closer to God.
this moved me to point of tears..I felt a tiny bit of what she must have been feeling while singing this..she was pained and that came through, she told a story and thank God for leading her home..I must admit I only came here because of the controversy saying Beyonce didn't do this song justice at the Grammys and people were so right, when I heard Beyonce sing this I felt nothing but hearing it from Mahalia and even Ledisi was greatly different
As Ledisi played Mahalia in "Selma", her aim was to pretty much recreate or channel Mahalia. She does that but once it was heard in the movie and soundtrack there was really no point in putting it on The Grammy stage. I'm a fan of Ledisi, but I won't lie and say that everyone was taking notice of her version until now. If people cared, all this sharing and commenting should have happened BEFOREHAND; not after a probably made up "scandal". That would be kind of embarrassing to me.
L. Hill That was a pretty lame defense of Beyonces poor rearing. No one worth a damn would take the stage and sing another womans award winning song performance and then do it so little justice.
The music I listen to is the music that evokes something within my spirit, whether it's anger, joy, sadness, anticipation, excitement or whatnot. And this song ... this God-given voice ... you can NOT listen to this song and not get a chill down your spine or at the very least feel a wedge of the meaning of the words.
My God my God, If this woman didn't make Heaven, I have no reason to keep going to church. THIS WOMAN SINGS LIKE SHE WALKED AND TALKED WITH THE LORD, the sound of her amazing voice and how she testifies when she sings, THERE HAS GOT TO BE A GOD UP THERE.
Barry Benson. Yes, Yes Barry, all I can say is Yes. Hearing Mahalia sing this, you know there is a God and give us a reason to love and serve him.thanks for post Barry. A wake up call.
I remember when I first listened to this song, everyday after school I would go over to my grandma’s house until one of my parents got off of work, she would always play Mahalia Jackson no mater what. This was the first song that I ever heard by Mahalia and I instantly fell in love. ❤️
My mother loved Mahaila Jackson, she was such a powerful singer. I remember the first time I saw her sing (when I was little) was in ,"Imitation of life".
It's hard to believe that those people just sat still while she sung. I would have been jumping up and down, filled with the spirit. That was an awesome rendition. Her version was the opening for the movie "Mississippi Burning"
I DONT REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD MAHALIA'S VOICE. SOMETIME IN THE 60'S. IT WAS A SONG BOTH GOSPEL AND FOR THE HOLIDAYS. I DONT RECALL WHAT IT WAS, HOWEVER I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN THE WAY SHE SANG IT. AFTER THE RELEASE OF HER CHRISTMAS ALBUM I EMULATED HER AND GAVE EVEN STRANGERS THE ALBUM AT CHRISTMAS, OR DURING THE YEAR.IN THE BEGINNING AS I LISTENED OVER AND OVER TO HER ALBUM OVER THE HOLIDAYS ( I NEVER AGAIN LISTENED TO ANOTHER HOLIDAY ALBUM BUT HERS) BECAUSE I CAME TO REALIZE THAT SHE WAS THE ONLY VOCALIS ON EARTH SINGING TO GOD NOT AN AUDIENCE, AS THE SEASON DEMANDS. PERHAPS THE ONLY VOCALIST WITH A VOICE AND SINCERITY TO REACH HEAVEN. SHE ONCE SAID SHE WOULD ONLY USE THE VOICE GOD GAVE HER TO SERVE HIM. MAHALIA IS GONE BUT EVERY TIME I PUT ON ONE OF HER ALBUMS ESPECCIALY THE CHRISTMAS SONGS I KNOW SHE IS STILL SERVING GOD.
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of my mother ....she loved this song and would always sing it when she was sick and before she passed......Thank You Jesus...yes yes..
The One and Only Mother of Gospel Music! No disrespect to Shirley Caesar but she has nothing on Mahalia Jackson! This is the kind of pure music that moves my whole world! Thank you for allowing this Earth to know your creation Mahalia Jackson!
"Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I am tired, I am weak, I am worn Through the storm, through the night" Mahalia Jackson Revisitada Senhor
That's what you call good old fashioned gospel singing. I miss that kind of gospel singing. Many of today's gospel singers are in to contemporary gospel singing which almost sound like secular music. When Mahalia Jackson sang "Sooner We'll Be Done With The Troubles Of The World" on Imitation of Life, it sent chills down my spine. She was truly blessed with the voice of an angel.
When I listened to Beyoncé and Ledisi version, I didn't have the urge to cry. With this, I did. All beautiful voices and versions, but I appreciate this one the most.
In 1955 Mahalia Jackson sang at Morris Brown AME Church in my hometown of Charleston, SC. It was in the dead of winter, cold, and I had the flu. When all you have is God, then God is enough.
Have mercy.....that woman.....no special effects..no computer enhancements..... just RAW WORSHIP.......Thanks Mahalia
There's nobody alive today who can sing this song like Mahalia Jackson. She is the queen, of gospel Southern soul.
💯TOTALLY AGREE💯
You probably didn't even know about her till Beyonce' s performance.
chane kawaihae You idiot, I knew about her since the 80's, as child from the South.
Whoa you're old

She was so precious thank you Jesus for sharing her with us
when i was a little girl in the late fifties and my older siblings were at school, my Mom used to put her Mahalia records on and clean house.
This is my husband favorite song. His mom passed away yesterday. May 23,2016
Sorry for your loss. May the Lord be with you during your time of recovery. 🙀😪🙏

Check out the history of Amazing Grace by Winley Phipps song was written by John Newton the Capt. of a slave ship.
What you wrote hit my spirit and I felt the power of those words. . . . knowledge of the pain and suffering Jesus did on the cross to pay our (MY) price, and just how much we (I) owe Him for our ability to walk through this life free. . . Amen! You go me shoutin up in here.
These songs came out of the pain and suffering black folks were enduring themselves needing someone to hold their hand through the struggles.
Lady Marine. I love your heart felt comment God bless you
Lady Marine. Jai it. .
i am going through a very tough time in my life right now and hearing miss jackson has lifted my spirits
Thank You Lord for holding my hands coz I can't even walk without You holding my hands. Thanks for sharing.

i just love mahalia jackson so much that i named my babygirl after her.mahalia. she had such an angelic voice. rest in paradise mahalia jackson
Speechless. I don't even have the words to express how masterful this is.
Raphael Nelson. You so very right Raphael. Oh , My Goodness. Thanks for post Raphael .
I try to move on to other videos and I couldn't, her voice is full of pain and gratitude to God in this song.
Mahalia you truly moved me to tears.
gospel music is my life, for I love the Lord so much amen Saints
Why is this making me cry?!
I'm asking myself that as I'm crying now!
***** very true...very true
I've been clicking around the screen all week in autopilot and i am weeping, numb, present & bleeding like a human again
Taylor Downing she sang this at Emmitt Till's funeral.
She brings the Holy Ghost!! Amen!!!
My grandmothers favorite Gospel Singer.. She had all her tapes and I listened when I was a kid.. RIP Grandma :'(
This song, this song, this song. look in her eyes. she sings only to glorify God. Amazing!!!
Mahalia Jackson, truly one of my Favorite GOSPEL SINGER'S! ANGEL ON EARTH,ANGEL IN HEAVEN.
I found out today that my lifelong friend, Bonnie Morgan Griffith, passed last evening. I will miss our marathon telephone conversations. Bonnie and I were born the same day in the same year. We attended the same junior and senior high school. I will really miss her. R.I.P. Bonnie.
This reminds me of my mom. I had them sing it at her funeral. Oh how I miss my mom. R.I.P Jo
This song brings tears to my eyes every time my late grandfather asked my mother to sing this song to him on his deathdead. RIP Grandpa..
That is an amazing testimony!!!!#ToGodBeTheGlory!!!!!
your comment made me cry
Shauntel Gill To God Be The Glory
Clement
you god will be with you always he is our strenth i have ben abused also but i am still alive and now hav peace god walked with me through the abuse
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near
When my light is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home (lead me home)
Now I know what an angel sounds like.😍😍😍😍😘😇.
People please do not insult this great humble gracious and mention her name in the same breath with Beyonce
Please!!!
Easy Rider. Please don't people
I personally feel Beyonce's was very good. And I don't know we always idolize things from past generations because we feel they are more classic.
Mama Mahalia has it all, voice, passion and sou!!!!!
I LOST MY MOTHER MARY ,LAST MARCH-2012/ my LATE DAD SAID YOU ONLY HAVE ONE MOTHER.I MISS HER EVERY DAY.
this moved me to point of tears..I felt a tiny bit of what she must have been feeling while singing this..she was pained and that came through, she told a story and thank God for leading her home..I must admit I only came here because of the controversy saying Beyonce didn't do this song justice at the Grammys and people were so right, when I heard Beyonce sing this I felt nothing but hearing it from Mahalia and even Ledisi was greatly different
L. Hill SOMETIMES IT TAKES BAD NEWS TO GET TO THE GOOD NEWS AND THIS VIDEO IS GOOD NEWS.
L. Hill That was a pretty lame defense of Beyonces poor rearing. No one worth a damn would take the stage and sing another womans award winning song performance and then do it so little justice.
L. Hill There was no point on Beyoncé singing this song either.
Yea, was kindda confused on that too. Would've liked to see Ledisi sing the song. Plus Byonce left out the entire 2nd verse lol.
Every era every age group has their personal favorite performers . This is my era and IMHO none better than an original.
No earthly words can describe this beautiful woman's Soul & her heavenly gift !🙏🏾🌹🙏🏾
It's hard to believe that those people just sat still while she sung. I would have been jumping up and down, filled with the spirit. That was an awesome rendition. Her version was the opening for the movie "Mississippi Burning"
It is the moment we realize we are not in control. We did not create ourselves!

Her resonance and emotion are overwhelming. Those "chest belts" paralyze my cells.
She was truly a phenom.
I have to listen again because I did not hear the song, I cried all the way through it. Thank you, Jesus
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of my mother ....she loved this song and would always sing it when she was sick and before she passed......Thank You Jesus...yes yes..
Linda Saunders god bless u
The One and Only Mother of Gospel Music! No disrespect to Shirley Caesar but she has nothing on Mahalia Jackson! This is the kind of pure music that moves my whole world! Thank you for allowing this Earth to know your creation Mahalia Jackson!

"Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night" Mahalia Jackson Revisitada Senhor
That's what you call good old fashioned gospel singing. I miss that kind of gospel singing. Many of today's gospel singers are in to contemporary gospel singing which almost sound like secular music. When Mahalia Jackson sang "Sooner We'll Be Done With The Troubles Of The World" on Imitation of Life, it sent chills down my spine. She was truly blessed with the voice of an angel.
When I listened to Beyoncé and Ledisi version, I didn't have the urge to cry. With this, I did. All beautiful voices and versions, but I appreciate this one the most.
