Carl Anderson was by far the best Judas in all of history no matter what anyone says. He had the voice and he had the pain that Judas was going through
@@Maca64N Haha superb answer. I'm pretty certain the Bible doesn't say he was dealt "shitty cards"... More like, it was a rotten business but he was the man to do it, as he was perfectly willing anyway. In that regard, he was brilliantly portrayed in this movie.
Carl Anderson showed us Judas just like a man. Not like a devil, but just like an ordinary man with his doubts and his weaknesses For me he was the real prominent character of the story.
Right on. I’m not religious but I’m a believer in the bible as an historical note. But also as a metaphor book as a fable. But Judas as you said was flawed. Someone I will listen to because of this. A true god in every sense of the word as we are all gods. But also human and flawed but also miraculous
I think there's more or less a general consensus that the opera was written with a focus on Judas. Also, on all the controversial figures in Jesus' story, like Pontius Pilate and Mary Magdalene. I studied literature and hearing the text, I'm pretty sure Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted to tell us exactly what you describe :-)
Exactly! I'm not a native speaker and I learned to pronounce English by singing this song. It's been 20 years, I'm a trained singer (well, in a choir) and I have a degree in English Studies - and still can't sing it without one or two mistakes or moments of hesitation!
¡¡¡the best Judas ever!!! What a poweful energy of Carl!!! I played as the apostol James, Santiago in spanish, Jesus' cousin...our Judas inspired in this Judas and we performed our Jesuschrist Superstar tour in Ecuador, Southamerica: Cuenca, Guayaquil and Quito.
The Tanks are symbolic of the military might of Rome, which Judas fears. What is also interesting is that those tanks just happen to be British built CENTURION tanks.
The best Judas of all time and best Jesus of all time. I listened to it on a bootleg tape as a schoolgirl in the Soviet Union, and loved it ever since. We used to make hand-written copies of the text.
I'll love Russia forever but I hate what's happening in Ukraine, never thought this would happen, hope it's over soon, it allready feel like a sort of endtime alltogether hope I'm mistaken.
never in a million years did I ever think that this rock opera would make it to you tube. I am 61. I saw this at my local high school when I was 18. I still remember all the words to all the songs. This was a fantastic rock opera and I won't ever forget it.
The scene of Judas struggling to take the money is my favorite scene in the whole film. We really see his spirit and resolve being tested in this song, but when he just barely manages to squeak out those last times after taking the bag, it's like we see his entire character shatter completely
that "well done judas, good old judas" is the best part of the song. the angels singing in mercy and kindess towards this historically damned figure. it really emphasises the tragedy of his story and the empathy that the audience feel for him. it shows despite his tragic ending of suicide, the angels still sing for his comfort. he was a neccissary piece in the puzzle. the idea the angels are watching over him is such a beautiful thought
I never got the idea it was ANGELS singing those phrases to Judas! (I’ve seen JCS twice on stage and three times on film.) 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And you’re right - the music and lyrics do emphasize his whole situation. But Angels serve God, and Judas betrayed God’s Only Son. I just don’t see Angels serenading him?!? To each his own! 💚♥️💚♥️🕊🙏✝️😘🙋♀️🎄
They also serve as a symbol for Judas' feeling completely and utterly overwhelmed and overpowered by outside forces pressuring him into taking different courses of action
I think that's maybe leaning a little too close towards antisemitism... I'd maybe be more inclined to suggest something a little less extreme.. It's not necessarily about Jewish power as it is about Roman influence, anyhow.
I would tend to see them as the symbol for the pressure Judas was under to turn Jesus over however one could never make a worthy symbol to convey that which our good Lord faced. I really love the angelic voices singing "so long Judas" in the end and the symbolism of the Jets flying in unison only to depart in separate ways. Goosebumps!
Powerful, pivotal scene for the character of Judas, so perfectly portrayed and sung by Carl. His torn emotions are all over his face. He loved Jesus, but he wanted a way to put a stop to Jesus' over zealous followers, and unfortunately, he saw this as the only way sealing Jesus' fate and his(Judas) fate in the process.
Of course, this is one of the greatest soundtracks and films ever made, in my opinion. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to see both Carl Anderson and Ted Neeley do a live Stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar. And Dennis DeYoung played Pontius Pilate! Is that not perfect? Bless Mr. Anderson's soul! He was a huge influence on me for his Brilliance. Absolute brilliance.
I've never been interested in jesus' story and i am not after listening to this amazing musical. it's pure art and you don't need to be overly religious to enjoy it.
I love how this scene begins with the tanks, symbolizing the power of The Roman occupation ( or maybe the grip of evil ). Remember how Judas in the opening scene expressed his fears of Rome and their occupation ? His betrayal of Jesus is brought about by his fears and lack of faith in who Jesus was. He was afraid the gospel message was “ getting much too loud “. The fear of having to defend the ministry of Jesus and knowing of the Zealots who thought the Messiah was going to lead a movement against Rome was plaguing him. I don’t think he understood that Jesus was born to be the sacrificial lamb. At the end of the scene, You see the “ flyover”, the power , as the jets fly ahead and split to each side, leaving Judas on the ground as if a force released him from its grip. The mix of old and new and the symbolism in this movie are masterful.
but you might as well take it , we think that you should think of the things you can do with that money, choose any charity - give to the poor we noted your motives, we noted your feelings, this isn't blood money it's a fee nothing more
The way I see it, this movie doesn’t stand on the religious part of jesus’ story and it actually shows how it may have really happened, he started believing what some people said, that he was sent by god, even the son of god. Also the point of view of Judas, his political reasons for not believing in the way Jesus message was portraying himself, makes for a plausible and pragmatic perspective. And I appreciate that there are no just evil guys here, even Herod point of view makes sense. It makes me almost have sympathy for Jesus himself :p
IronManx70 Those are "priestly hats," or migbahats. Pharisees were a political group _not_ priests, so Annas and Caiaphas would not actually be wearing those or those BDSM leathers in real life. But yeah, who wouldn't want a migbahat?

the real Judas, according to the Bible, was dealt a shitty hand of cards in life. He's the bases for perceived anti-Semitic views.

This is an amazing redub. This is my #1 favorite opera but the music in this film has never been as loud as it needs to be. You fixed that 100%.
Very well made scene with the scaffolding, tanks and everything!
This made me 😢
Performing in “Jesus Christ Superstar” was by far the biggest highlight of my time in community theater. I played Caiaphas when we put it on in 2014.
Love this and I adore Carl Anderson. Thank you for redubbing and posting xoxo
3:33 - i'm very convinced that russell brand modelled his entire look on this
Dude! You are a hero! I ALWAYS felt the same way regarding the tracks! I THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT WORK!!
This movie brought more people to Jesus, than any preacher ever could
Great acting... great singing! 💜
When I was younger I would always call the scene with the tanks the pressure
The music is just… I’ve never heard anything remotely like it. I love it so much
“Jesus wouldn’t mine that I was here with you”
I thought Jesus told Judas to turn him in. Wel not in the movie in general
I hear you, lol.
Oh look. Such contemporary relevance 2K years later. Fighting the same damn wars.
Boomer Ann between the Romans and the Jews you mean?
Carl Anderson is a Legend.
WHoa! THis is an amazing version! Thanks so much for up'ping this!
What a voice - definitely my favourite Judas. Gillan was my favourite Jesus and everyone (no exceptions) has copied him since.
tanks and jets in the time of Jesus ! That's ART! and Carl Anderson just absolutely BRILLIANT ! Caiaphas & Annas & all cast!
Man Judas got a raw deal! And Carl expressed it so very well. I agree! Back when singers could sing.
Carl Anderson the best ever! He brought a human quality to Judas nobody else has!
Thank you so much for doing this. So many of the clips on TH-cam are from the version with lowered music, and that is not the way JCS is meant to be enjoyed.
Still adore you Carl!!!!
Back in the day when singers could sing
scobra Word.
