Leadership Lessons with Special Operations Veterans Kyle Lamb and John Lovell

  • Everything rises and falls on leadership. Whether we are talking about an NFL team, a massive corporation like Coca Cola, a military unit, or even a country, leadership can make or break any of these. The good news is, all leadership is based on the same principles and general wisdom. The bad news is, good leadership is difficult to find, and good leaders are few and far between. Though the recipe for good leadership is well known, the ability for folks to be able to rise to the challenge is quite a different story.
In this video, Special Operations veterans Kyle Lamb and John Lovell discuss lessons in leadership. John asks Kyle questions about his book ‘Leadership in the Shadows’ and other questions relating to the essence of leadership, how to motivate people, leadership styles, how military experience can translate into the civilian world, and more.
SGM (r) Kyle Lamb spent 21 years in the military with over 19 of those years in Special Operations and Special Forces, and over 15 of those years in Delta Force. Kyle Lamb fought in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), deploying numerous times to fight in Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF), and many other conflicts to include fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993. The book and movie Black Hawk Down would be based on the events that transpired in the streets of Somalia with Army Rangers, the Army’s 10th mountain division, and Delta Force.
SGM (r) Kyle Lamb led soldiers throughout his long and distinguished career in military Special Operations, and he continues to lead through his company Viking Tactics (also known as V-Tac), and through a number of other mediums to include a TV Show called Viking Chronicles, a podcast from Crusader Acres, through numerous articles he writes for firearm channels, and through social media platforms like TH-cam, Facebook, and Instagram.

A smart man asked me once how to identify a great leader. After multiple attempts, he stopped me and told me it was very simple. Look at the followers.

    • @rd3299
      @rd3299 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

And what makes good followers? Do they simply follow their orders without question? No.
They understand the reasoning of the orders, and they know how to execute them as best as they can with what they have.
And the person who teaches them this, and knows how to harness their ability as best as they can, is their leader.

Hey bro, there's something kinda I can't put my finger on w/Kyle. I spent a lot of trigger time taking some fundamentals w/him years and years ago before Viking took off, THE GUY CRACKED US UP and the "high speed"HRT (they were so underestimated too on shoot-on-the-move work) guys and I just ate w/him & he reminds me of the actor who played the original Lion in Wizard of Oz (the original!! do you see it? lmao!)

*KYLE!!! You were more than just great leadership. Before VTAC's soaring into the stratos, MY GOD, you must take ANY primary or sidearm courses (first timer to advanced, he's fun, BEYOND patient...we had high speed HRT guys who would get tripped up, & he had all of us performing at similar proficiencies getting that follow up w/front sight focus etc etc while moving laterally etc)....Sorry, not trying to kiss ass by plugging his program, I've spent too many countless hours talking to this total icon of humility (albeit, I'm sure I annoyed the living shit out of the poor guy and he never gives up and does that "oh geez...look at the time")*

Some more good advice - Apply what you are and what you know to business. Its difficult to undo who you are. I served two years compulsory conscription in the SADF '85 to '86. I grew up hunting and firearms are as natural to me as the fingers on my hand. I pursued a career as a professional hunting guide from '87. Specialized in tracking problem leopard with hounds - till 2009 and that was stopped by an out right ban on use of hounds to track leopard. My life has been a bit of a disorganized affair - like I lost my identity , a source of income I depended on and a life I was devoted to. I'm trying to find my feet in a world I do not know. This clip has helped me. Thanks John and Kyle. AND Kyle I'll be disappointed if you come hunting in South Africa again and do not get a chance to meet you. Just observed some items that make me think you have been here or in Namibia before.

It's funny you talk about messing up in front of your students. I had a instructor in the police academy that had a huge ego and would absolutely berate us anytime we were slow or missed, but the one time I did well and beat him out of the holster and hit my steel first, he made up so many excuses. he never said good job or encouraged me he just made excuses. I never did respect him notr did anyone else in the class. Awesome video. Thanks john.

I'm 26 going on 27. My dad passed away 2 years ago this Christmas. I moved up to Wisconsin from south Florida with my mother and my dog for a good change. Things aren't really what I imagined they would be. More and more I've been considering enlisting. The structure, feeling of family and brotherhood is something that seems to be missing. Everything this channel talks about is very relate-able. I have been considering Army or Marine corps. Thank ya'll for your service.

Anyhow, I have learned so much from videos about leadership in the military that I wish I had seen when I was still active. "Don't treat all the people you're leading, the same." Something I've learned, is that some people are nails... They need to be hammered hard before they get the point and it sinks in. Some people are screws, all it takes is a little easing in and they grasp it.
However, if you're going to hammer a screw, it's going to be a bad day and one risks losing the project. Yet if you try to screw a nail, you're just going to keep slipping and nothing will ever get done. Bosses hammer everyone, then bitch relentlessly when their methods don't work and blame everyone else. Leaders make the effort to figure out who the nails and screws are, then apply things accordingly.

Really great to see the rapport between you guys! And America is in a CRISIS due to poor leadership. Why? because being a leader is hard and takes work. And men are no longer encouraged to be brave, tough and to take charge. So Kyle and john, I remind you that there are far too many young men growing up without a father in the house...and those young guys look to men like you to fill that void in their life and in their soul. I know those are big shoes to fill, but I have full faith and confidence in you and I only wish there were 1,000,000 more like you.

  • @carlostavares6052

Thank you. I like the way Vikings fight - fighting stance, etc. No fancy stuff just fight, not so much competitive shooting, just fighting under threat of your life. You fight a lot differently - and you make imperfections in the fray . . . Good to see Kyle Lamb on your show. He teaches that.
Leadership: I like leaders who work and do their share. Just their share is all I ask of a leader. I will do the rest. But very difficult to work for person who you have to do all the work. And thinking? . . . Well you have to get lucky there. A leader who thinks is rare. Great job guys. PS Kyle Lamb likes the AR for home defense like you do Command Sgt. Major! Godspeed

Love the show. It was inspirational for sure. I've never been military, although I have often wished I had, but being in construction most of my life has taught me a lot about being a leader for those who depend on me for training and being an example of quality craftsmanship, and skilled performance. But I always like to take the humble approach and just be the guy that is willing to pull nails out of old 2x4's. I find it makes it a lot easier to help the next guy coming up the ladder to get his chance to lead and relieve me of the headache it can bring sometimes. Great show. Keep up the good work.

My word is "Integrity". It comes from the root word integer, which means whole or complete. Integers are whole numbers (1, 2, 3... ), they lack nothing nor have anything extra. They are complete!
A person with integrity is whole or complete. Their character lacks nothing that is good and desirable in a person. At the same time, their character does not have traits that are detrimental to themselves or others. Integrity encompasses all the things we should strive for in our lives. Things like, honesty, strength, fortitude, compassion, kindness, fairness, and the list goes on.
This world needs more men with integrity. Men who will do right, no matter what.

Re-watching this, I appreciate how much Lovell looks up to this man. To all of us who look up to Lovell, "party on," but keep learning new models. When I first watched WPS, I was of the "meh, another gunner" mentality. But as I have learned more about his philosophy, I am more drawn to this content. And I think it is cool to see Lovell showing that same admiration for someone else that is often directed toward him.

I pulled a TDY to Germany in 1973 and because I had to drive my comms truck, I had to go thru Kraut approved driver school. My instructor was a Wehrmacht sgt in WWII who was captured in North Africa and sent to AZ as a POW where he worked in a warehouse. He told me he knew the instant he got there that Germany had no chance...he told me we won for three reasons. 1) American soldiers could fight effectively as individuals. IN his squad when the officer got killed they just sat down until another officer was sent up 2) Training. He said we could take a 17 year old and trun him into a man with as much applicable battlefield wisdom to fight effectively and take over leadership anytime any where. 3) We had forklifts...we could load trucks and planes and ships 20x faster...

Thank you both for your service to America. I like how Kyle honors his wife. We need leadership skills to inspire and managerial skills to achieve. Also, I just finished up my first week with #BlackRifleCoffee and love it!!!

Kim Townsel I, too, noted how he acknowledged, complimented and honored his wife. Just made me respect him more.

Awesome.Awesome. Awesome. Some really great gems on what it takes to be a good leader. The biggest one IMO was a leader takes the time to learn how to motivate each individual effectively. While not a leader myself, I've always gain respect quicker for leaders who took time to "learn me" and how best to work with me. You two looked like you were having way too much fun. It was very entertaining watching the comradery between you guys.

This is a great video. I liked the insight that was given. I could really relate to the things you and Kyle were talking about when it comes to instructors, being an instructor myself. Keep up the good work.

Kyle Lamb just gave me an excuse to shamelessly reminisce about my high school baseball glory days in the name of leadership...awesome! Lol, seriously though, I do like what he said about applying what you know or have been taught to solve real world problems.

hey John. you should do a video about joining the military but not the pros and cons type of video but a video to kind of warn or make sure that they're joining for the right reasons and what to expect. thought of the idea from experience so it should reach some people.
