I personally think the sode is still great, maybe add spmething to hold it there like the octo simple like a cord but on both sides. So that you could use a bladder or the insulation insert. But still mange the tapering to work with a couple discs on the other side also similar to octo series also.
I agree, I would like to carry the water weight more centrally. Carrying the hydrapak in one of the side pockets makes that particular side heavier and perhaps feels more lopsided when carrying the bag...at least until you drink your water. Also, having the bladder in the side pocket will work, but there is a loss of storage space. Not a deal breaker by any means, but not ideal either.

Would love a spot in the back for the bladder like the octos. But, I get having less pockets helps hit a lower price point.
