Vacuum decay is a very well known theory where subatomic particles with seemingly no potential energy left, suddenly go to an actual 0 and start off a process that deletes matter as everything returns to subatomic particles. Kurzhegast (go figure how to write it) made an excellent video about it.
And exactly where has this been demonstrated? Kurtz is pop science, well dressed up but it's still practically worthless and intended to push one message.
