    Seems like the general sentiment on hook grip "depth" is stiff bar = finger tips, deadlift bar = deeper in the palms. For myself, I've found the fingertip grip to be the most consistent and least painful. Before when I'd push my thumbs in deeper, the webbing between my index and thumb would often get scrunched up and cause tears. Also, with enough use (abuse), the skin and the nerves in the thumbs deaden, so that helps with the pain aspect.

      Yeah that’s why this is so individual, total opposite for me. Finger tips kills me pain wise but almost nothing on the deep set. My skin is really good but pressure wise the finger hurts so bad. Feels like it wants to explode. For me the skin getting rubbed and the joint compression is fine.

    Hey man, i am rewatching all your Videos atm and i just wanted to say that i really like your content and you are doing really good with how you explain things and set up your videos.
    The points you are making all make sense to me in theory and i cant wait to try some of them out when i finish my meet in like 3 weeks.
    I also really enjoy your mix of mobility and strength exercises and will include some in my own training. You made me want to gain back some more functional abilitys besides just powerlifting.
    I would really love another Video, which has your "functional" exercises in focus.
    great work and much love

    Doing your sub max DUP program now and it’s challenging but I’m gonna document the whole thing and have it on TH-cam for others to take from it what they will and it’ll be good to have as anecdotal evidence for yourself and others !

      Thank you bro! Stay true to the RPEs otherwise it’ll be brutal lmao. Most people overshoot it too much. It’s a base builder so I push RPEs hard. Let me know when you finish!

    Bro I am in the exact same place as you with benching... Shoulder pain making it unbearable at lockout. Had to humble myself and went back to basics, worked up to a weight with no pain (35kg) and started from there. Brought my grip in close like yours and also added in regular push ups for that scap health plus 1 board strapped to my chest on both exercises works well for me too. I'm now back up to 65kg for reps full ROM with 90% pain free movement. EZ bar upright rows have helped free up ROM in delts too. Hopefully this can help anyone else currently enduring weird as shoulder pains... Blessings.

    Hello Brendan,
    Hope your shoulder gets better soon.
    About the hook grip thing, I've been pulling hook grip for 7 years now, I'm griping super deep too and I agree with you, it feel like if I can break the weight from the floor, I can lift it. Pain wise, never had pain or discomfort on the thumb or on the joint (but my hands are very conditioned from manual labor).
    My only problem is the nail on the thumb, if it's a bit longer it breaks on the inside, if it's a bit shorter the flesh of the thumb underneath gets cut, both cause bleeding.

    Hi Brendan, I also have lanky/longer arms and your tip about keeping arms back and down to ensure all slack is pulled out of the bar while deadlifting has been very helpful. I’m curious how tall you are as I’ve noticed a lot of your hand placement/positioning on squat/dead/bench is very similar to mine. Thanks! 🤙🏻

    When I used to care about my grip (since I don't compete, I just strap all my deadlifts strongman style), I would only hook grip up to sets of 3, but typically only on top sets. I would do all my back down work with straps, which is the way Bryce Krawczyk does it as well.
    Also started implementing those GHD situps into my routine, those are amazing. You doing 60 lb is really impressive, I can only manage about 30 lb for 3 sets of 10. Need to up my core game I guess.

    Maybe dips would be more tolerable for your shoulder? If I had my way the weighted dip would be a contested lift instead of bench press.

    Have you thought about experimenting with reverse grip bench? I know Austin Baraki has used it to manage pain associated with standard benching

    Brendan serious question from someone whos been in the game for 8 years. 4 serious back injuries now from deadlifting. Thinking about quitting deadlifting which I really dont want too as i love competing. What can i do to stay injury free? All my injuries are from working sets.

      No, it was nothing personal but wasn’t for me. I’ll be with Dylan again soon. Tbh after trying a lot of coaches it seems Dylan is the only one I vibe with.

    Why are you not able to pull as much slack with hook grip?

    • @Kyle111
      @Kyle111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is because he has to set it and can’t grip and rip like he usually does which throws off positioning a bit. I pull in a similar way, get your brace, grab bar, wedge yourself in and go. I’ve noticed I can’t get in as good of a position when using straps so I’d imagine it’s similar with hook grip.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kyle111 this is true for a slow hook however it’s not quite just this. I’ll respond to OG poster so he gets notification and you can read that comment. However this is also part of it.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s mainly due to the slack of the fingers making it impossible to connect to the bar like I do with a mix grip pull. As I pull slack out the bar moves in my hand and it makes it impossible to fully get the slack out with hook. You see this universally on the DL bar with all hook grip pullers. I don’t think there’s a way around it unfortunately but I’ll experiment.

    You still working out early in the morning?

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No! 10am now, I’ve found much better success with this. Less life efficiency however far better training and tbh efficiency is nearly equal because I’m way less tired. It seems my chornotype doesn’t like early sleep. I was getting 8 hours but hardly reached REM sleep until half way through the night
