A lot of rubbish casting vids on TH-cam but this is one of the best - definitely a great cast for beginners to use
Well you should thank them each technic is worth trying, I kinda settled on the ground cast until I get efficient enough , I may move up to the pendulum, but Im gonna try this one , thanks

I've just re-viewed this video after practising my casting and to brush up & it was a great help. I use a longer drop & lean further in to the cast though as it gives more compression although space isn't always there to be able to lean in I know. I did however burn my thumb so do take notice of the "thumby" advice, LOL

Thanks, I'm just considering getting back into angling after a 20yr lapse....lol. This cast looks perfect for me to do with a simple cheaper rod and a fixed spool reel, much easier to master than a multiplier and a stiff pendulum style casting rod....will give this style a try when I buy my beachcasting kit.

I've been UK shore fishing as a proper hobby for about 5 years but only in the past year or so opted to change my standard overhead 'thump' cast, for something better for distance (along with swapping my 12ft rods for some 14ft's).........this is the cast I've gone for to learn (I knew it as the 'easy cast' from John Holden's tutorial initially) and I think its the best distance cast to start with because its easier timing the release correctly to hit the distance and makes you feel more secure in terms of safety (you cast linear rather than sweeping the lead around wide like with a standard off the ground cast or pendulum...........so less chance of casting over other lines or being the new novice who took your mates head off lol). I think you would get more distance with a standard off the ground cast because swinging the lead around in a circle gives you more torque and power...........but for now I'm sticking with this cast......it makes a big difference.......PS never seen or heard of this guy Terry before.......sorry to hear he passed........he sounded like he knew his stuff.

To be added to my Book Marks Bar along with schematic (I think thats the right word) of Holden's +easy cast+. Both have smooth actions and are well balanced right to the end of the cast without distance thinking dominating their actions.. To those commenters with the beginners bit, add "and oldies." Surprised its called the Brighton cast! As this very style was developed by the great Leslie Moncrieff at Dungeness during the heydays of the big cod runs, of the 1960's. He found like many anglers that on the big tides the beach was layered steeply as it is today, cramping the overhead casts and so developed this style from his overhead thump. On cramped rocky back drops this style was also used by Clive gammon and Brian Harris also at Dunge. John Darling also during his bass fishing days on the big tides at Dungeness used this technique. The disadvantages are your restricted or you were, may be that's changed with terminal tackle advances, to up line paternoster with clips as you can grind the bait out or turn the hook points over on the shingle. Which is why the aerial off ground pendulum style became popular, with those of us that could master it. Though if you practice enough most can do it, so this technique has been around for a very long time and was classed by many as well as the top casters of the day simply as a layback style variation. The name has not just come about because of some sort of fashion hype all this time later?
Great post what about his rod The spring heel 14 ft tapered both ends. world record 163 yards 2 ft 6 inches nothing compared to today's casts I still own mine but not the pfluger sea king multiplyer. I wonder how it would fair with a decent reel?

This is the same motion a trebuchet goes through when launching.
Not quite, as a trebuchet doesnt bend, it throws the load out on a large loop to gather speed doesnt it.
This uses the inertia of the lead to pull the tip instantly into a bend, with the line being as close to 90° from the butt
Is it still possible to clip your lead down?
You can...... but you can't really use standard bait clips/impact shields/impact leads......because if the line goes slack on the floor in any way the hook pops out........but if you use Gemini Splash Down Solo Bait Clips they hold the hook in place until the hook hits the water.............even for off the ground casting

+Steve Billows Aye mate it can do but you can take your time and position the lead and clip down rig gently to the deck with the rod up high and while keeping the tension on the line move the tip of the rod down and backwards until you're in the required position and then hit it. Or alternatively you can simply swing the lead back and forth (towards you and away from you) and when the lead swings closest to you turn and hit it.
of course not mate, but just make sure you have fully clipped your trace on so it doesn't come off you link clip or whatever you are using.
@@Noname-qk9or It can sometimes come off even if you have clipped it on properly.........because as you sit the lead on the ground the mainline slackens/shortens but the snood length stays the same.....so it pops off (you can slide your bait clip/impact shield lower to tighten the snood to counter this......but if you do it too low the snood becomes too tight and won't always release when the rig hits the water) ........the key to doing it if you are using normal bait clips/impact shields is make sure you follow the video instructions where Terry mentions about "swinging the lead out and back in again" to lay it on the floor (i.e. DO NOT try to drop the line straight down slack on the floor and walk the rod tip back.......because unless you do it really slowly to keep the line taught, the hook will likely pop out)............the most fail safe thing you can do in terms of clipping bait down when using off the ground casts is to simply use a Gemini Splash Down Solo Bait Clip..........because they completely clip around the hook until they hit the water and release the hook.

If it's stopping dead on the beach before releasing it, surely there's no need to even swing it out. Just lay it on the beach and walk a step towards it. Then cast.
That's what I used to do when first starting this cast..............but then you realise swinging out and back in, is slightly better because it allows you to walk tight to the surf/water line and cast from there giving you extra distance.........if you step towards the lead you have to walk further back away from the surf line (it can also throw your footing off a little as well......its generally better to get your footing right and rooted solid first before going into the cast for better torque)..........its also better when fishing on a sloping beach as you tend to dig the rod point into the shingle bank if you have to walk back where the beach gradually gets steeper away from the surf line (you can start with the rod tip higher to counter this but you would lose your casting arc size.......which means less power) ........having said that the difference is fairly minor..........you could still get a decent enough cast stepping towards it..........if that was the style you prefer.
hi im a novice i see in this video of terry using a Multiplier i use a fixed spool will this cast be ok for me.

Top tip! Don't use this cast if you're using a rig with a rotten bottom. Otherwise your lead it will go through the window of the caravanette parked behind you.

Leverage, yes. But not necessarily distance. A compressed 12ft rod cast with a good technique to compress the rod fully, will give better distance than a 15ft rod with just a bit of a bend put in it
I replaced my original 12ft beach casters with 14ft ones...............the extra length made a little difference...........but changing my casting style made much much much more difference than just buying my new rods.........its all to do with building and keeping the rod loaded with maximum bend pressure (torque) through your cast until the release.........that's why softer rods cast better distances with a slower easier action (especially for newer casters)......where as stiffer rods will cast further than softer rods if they are cast harder/faster or with a better technique.
@@lukemoon4466 no doubt the technique is just as important as the rod itself.
I was using a very similar,but perfected form of that cast,back in the 1980's.
His technique is not perfect for that style of cast.
I have cast,using that technique,alongside Paul Kerry at Pevensey,in a competition & my casting distance was equal to Paul's.
At the time,I had 2 Paul Kerry 9680 rods with 2 Abu UltraMag 3 reels,using 7oz long tail breakaway bombs.
