Casting a Beach Rod - Like a Champion

- 9 out of 10 people don't know how to get the maximum distance out of their beach rod. I just happen to be a former tournament casting champion. In this video, I show you how it's done.
I'm now removing any posts from the (British?) trolls who seem outraged at the idea of casting without a shock leader, and completely miss the point that because this technique is "in line" (no sideways action) it is completely safe in the (rare) event of a break-off, unlike pendulum and other styles which are incredibly dangerous in the (rare) event of a break-off. But I'm not telling anyone NOT to use shockers, if that's your thing. Meanwhile, the trolls will continue their campaign of Dislikes ... LOL!

This is best instructions for beach rod casting I've seen. Straight forward and simple unlike many other "experts" who are trying to sell their brand/products.

Try using shock leader and you will get less crack offs
At 13:15 you say to punch out with your top hand. I just watched another video that said you do NOT punch out but to just use the other hand to pull the bottom of the rod down. Yet, as I was hearing that, I thought to myself it would be more effective to punch out with one hand AND pull down with the other. I'm glad to hear it verified from a very qualified person. Thanks!

Finally a no nonsense technique that everyone can eventually learn. Too many videos about pendulum casting that takes endless time to practice when all we need is to catch fish and get the bait out far.

I've never bothered watching a "how to cast" video. I've basically just fumbled around on the beach maybe getting 80M with a 13 foot rod. This is the first and last video I'll watch on the subject. It's a one stop shop. I'm going to practice these techniques every day. Thanks so much for making and sharing this.

@@sidsquid1 so I've been practicing and my fishing has dramatically improved. I actually caught my first ever fish off the beach. I had been practicing my technique in the back yard with no weight. My first actual cast at the beach was probably 50% further than I'd ever casted before. I was so stunned and happy I actually laughed. I was that guy who would run out into the waves and still get no distance. No I can get far more distance and stay dry.

Just wanted to say I am British and obviously we must have a tendency to use shock leaders more than other countries as a cultural thing? To a degree at least.....but just wanted to say I completely get what you mean in terms of the difference in power between an easy/linear cast...to power casts such as side swing off the ground styles and pendulums....brilliant video....thank you for sharing this....I have seen similar videos but this has a good level of detail

Really interesting technique! So it looks like a perfected "overhead thump" (with a bit more foot-action, too). I would just recommend if someone used to a groundcast or pendulum wanted to try this, start slow! I've tried it with a multiplier and got a bad backlash because the power build-up with this cast was inherently a lot faster than I was used to.

Nice vid. Never tried level line casting. Totally different discipline than what I do. 175 yards with 8lb main line and a 4 oz lead is crazy!

Awesome technique! I went and bought a longer road because I think it would give me clearance for cliff fishing, meaning fish would not be hitting the cliff wall.

Had a good watch. Been getting in to surf casting for the last few years only. Seen the hecklers on here as well. We'll those compettion casters are awesome I've watched and read etc as much as I can about casting and not always found the techniques pendulum cast and others practical here in NZ chasing 20lbs Snappers and being in water upto your chest at times to try and aim for holes, rips, underwater points and other beach features. Most times we end up back at a variation of an overhead thump. Especially on the west coast here where many of the XXL Snappers are taken in the surf you kind of have to be watching your back you don't get knocked over and sucked into a rip. Many have died here fishing for the big one off the land. But I believe this gentle is at very advanced level of casting as to have big distance with no shock leader and I can see and agree with what he's saying but many of us aren't at that level. But I appreciate the effort he's gone to trying to explain, it's quite a gem. I hope one day I could reach this level. Thanks
Yes, the "hecklers" appear to be a small group of British guys who don't want to listen to anything that doesn't fit in with what they do. I've left their main comments here, but I'm just removing others that appear to be from the same group, as they just want to attack what I'm showing here without even considering its merits.

Still won't cast without a shockleader, got to think safety. I've cracked shockleaders off before now.
Fair enough, each to his own James. But if you've cracked shock leaders off, then it sounds like you're not safe anyway and your technique needs improving. There's a great video on how to do just that ... LOL! I don't know if you watched the whole video, but if you did you'll remember the bit about how, if you DO break off for some reason, with this technique it's still safe because the sinker's only going to go one place - out to sea.

Excellent presentation sir. By chance could you offer some tips for LDC casting bait, alive and cut, to a cat fisherman? I fish from the bank or a pear and have to get my bait out quite a ways to reach the drop off.

I wonder what lbs line you where using in this great video weight of sinker as well.
4 oz sinker with 8 lb line. I'd recommend starting with 10lb to begin with, until you get the timing right.
A tip for you guys, use a casting finger on the hand that holds the line, it will protect you finger when casting heavier bait against line cuts, especially when using braid.
Thanks Nico. As per the video, if you get the setup right, which then allows you to time the release right, there is actually very little pressure on the finger. I can fish for hours with a 5 oz sinker and a pilchard without any problems. But hey - a casting finger? Sounds interesting. Is that like a finger stall that you get from a stationary store, or is it something special that tackle shops sell?

i'm glad it helped Paul. I doubt I'll ever do another one with a different reel - I'm too lazy! But not much would change anyway. In the tournaments there were guys using multipliers in both the high and low reel mount positions.
How does it go when casting a sinker and bait? Does bait slow down the cast
Yes!
There's a competition event called "artificial bait" where the rig is a 4oz sinker with a 4" length of wooden dowel to simulate a sardine. Takes 30 - 40 metres off the cast.

One question: what about this technique do you credit for not breaking off the 4 oz weight on a 8 lb test? Most others say you need a leader. Is it the lack of slack that prevents the break away?
Absolutely. And also the fact that you get it in motion fairly gently at first and only really hit it at the end. That seems to guarantee that everything's happening smoothly before the real power goes on, and there are no sudden, jerky transients to complicate things.
Oh, and that very long drop adds to the shock absorbing effect too - it's easy to break a line between your hands, but a lot harder when the tension is spread over a long length of line . . .

Yep. Though some people deliberately cast the other way around so their hands end up in the "natural" winding position at the end of the cast.

What do you think is the importance ratio in equipment vs. technique? (ex. 50:50 ... ...)
I don't like to put numbers on things like that. Equipment & setup & technique are all of equal importance - if any one of those things isn't right, then the others don't matter so much. If you get all three right, the results are amazing.

the pushing with your right hand should not be that much. i can tell you, if you start generating too much power with that pushing force you're going to develop a kind of golfers elbow. Instead use it like a pivoting point and yank down with your left as hard as you can. I received that tip from a diff guy and no more golfer's elbow.
Never happened with me, or anyone I know for that matter - but each to their own!

Ha ha we call it the cave man technique, when they run with the rod in a cast ,a good solid plants beats running everytime, ,it's neanderthal casting, no technique just hammer it and it just goes nowhere ,I teach kids and you see a big guy doing the caveman ,then I'll say to one of the kids of half the size to whip one out and just planted they smash the caveman every time ,am no professional but I can sling a lead to be not far behind half decent pro's and I got a torn up shoulder ,funny when the kids see someone one do a caveman an they say you have to show them so I double his distance an not move from the spot as I cast ,learn proper handling technique is key to good acceleration of the lead ,over head and weight away from you on the floor makes the breakers open ,better to have the weight towards you and rod level low then in one motion you step away from the lead at same time lifting rod up and start moving it from behind to in front so as you land your step and rod level just above your head ,your lead is already off the floor and starting to accelerate,then push pull to whip the lead out ,it lessens the stress to the rods as use movement of rod going forward and then accelerate away with flex of the tip,most use a lot bigger rods then they did years ago and if you flex the rod from a slack then it's more likely to just break the rod

@@sidsquid1 some of Einstein's theories where actually wrong as it's been proven but what he did is to get us to think outside the box of normal taken for science ,ie he was the father of quantum physics, a mathematics still greatly used today ,I can't remember the scientist who nailed the relatively theory ,it was a Russian or Scottish guy ,here's the kicker ,both home /self tutored, so if you look at it in theory to casting then look at a good principal style of way we know and proved it worked and stick to enhancing it with plenty time and hard work to perfect your own cast ,if your smart enough to then you might just teach the world a new record breaking cast ,one things for sure I bet a quantum physician would be able to work it out how to cast the ultimate distance but I fear that we wouldn't understand it unless they broke it down into layman terms ha ha

I guess you can't please everyone! I think you must be having a bad hair day... 749 likes vs 63 dislikes tells the story. The dislikes are mainly from people who prefer to use shock leaders rather than learn how to cast properly. Are you one of those?
@sidsquid1 yes definitely you won't please everyone but this explanation of casting is so good going ott one foot of the ground if the rod goes around you in a bigger arc it will help you loads and more importantly use a shockleader 10 pounds for evey once and look up their are loads of vids about knots to help you and go to tournaments that will help you more and tacke your comb with you if you have any hope this helps

@sidsquid1 yes probably to much information for you. Probably no shockleader level line is a multiple with level ling and as for casting champion in the nineties ask Jeremy shader about casting any casting comp you need a shockleader icf rules
