Thanks to the Johnathan East band for allowing the use of their song "That Ole Ford Truck" in my new intro.
Replaced the PSOM in both of my OBS trucks since I've owned them. When it went bad in my 95 F150, my truck would not shift out of first gear and displayed no other symptoms other than a slight bobbling of the speedo needle at highway speeds. When it went bad in my 94 F250, the odometer was missing numbers from the mileage total, the speedometer went totally dead, and the truck would not shift properly whatsoever. Replaced and all was well again. When an issue comes up with the speedo or odo, and it is accompanied by strange transmission shifting, the PSOM is definitely a good thing to check/try before anything else. Cool video.. will help lots of people.
My 97 f350 the speedo just went crazy last night. Abs light came on once till i shut it off and od light was flashing. Got it to no lights by restarting trk and trk felt like it shift way early almost down to lugging an auto? Couple times
Good comment thanks
Man..... i just calibrated the PSOM to my 35x12.50x17 and worked like a charm. Thank you bunches. Made a world of difference on the shifting
Excellent Video, easy to understand and follow. I think It helped me understand the root of the problem I had on my truck.
My 1992 F150 I-6 300 4AOD was running rough, late, violent upshifts from 1-2, lagging performance. it had a dead Tachometer, so I pulled the PSOM and repaired a cold solder joint, Truck ran much better after, but still had issues. I replaced oversize tires I bought it with, bought factory size on the door and now the old truck runs and shifts smoothly. I am convinced it was the PSOM Calibration setting.
A very well done video. Easy to follow instructions. This will help a lot of people out. Thanks
Great video. You actually used my exact tires and size as your example so you did the formula work for me as well. Thanks a ton 96 Bronco I have
Just did this reset on my 95 F150 after switching out the cluster due to the odometer and speedo failing. Your directions work A-Okay.
After changing out did you notice if the mileage had increased or did it stop counting when it failed? My 94 f150 odometer doesn't display anymore and curious if it's still ticking along or not.
Owned my truck for 15 years and never recalibrated after throwing 31 bfg k/o’s on er... Wish I saw this video back then!! Great info, thanks for the upload!
Yep. I've been running 31's since replacing the original tires 25 years ago, and never knew about this. I've had no problems, but good to know.
Great demonstration! You were straight to the point. Now to purchase new tires.
Thank you!
I’m praying this works for my bronco. I put 33s on it and have developed an issue of hard unexpected shifts. This explains everything so well. Can’t wait to test drive.
Hey, I'm having your same problem, did you have an error code 3 one the odometer as well? and did you ever salve the shifting problem? The person I bought my truck form just put 33s on the truck then it started doing this.
I have nothing fancy on tires 95 xlt so I on my 4th 5.0 engine
Great video! One thing I figured out while re-calibrating mine was the jumper didn't like the cigarette lighter ground and wouldn't let me toggle through the CAL settings. I moved the alligator clip down to the bolt that holds the seat belt to the floor by the center console and that did the trick. My tires are a little worn so now the speedo is showing high by about 1-2% but it's WAY better than it was before (10+mph low) and now the transmission is shifting much smoother, especially on downshifts coming up to a stop light. Hope this helps someone!
you probably won't see this but this is exactly what worked for me!
Thanks for the video. Made the whole process a lot easier.
Great job! Straight to the point without any fluff filler BS including being man enough to admit a mistake for the greater hood!!
I Guess I need to check my 1994 F-150 Lightning it shifting a little weird pull a hill. it pulls a hill and then Jumps into the next lower gear when it shouldn't be doing that at least as soon as it does. Thanks for this info I Appreciate it. 0h yeah THUMB's UP👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the in-depth PSOM training on this SPEEDO ADJ adjustments... I am surprised that a math process was involved. vs, getting the formula of read end axel TONE RING nr# -X -REV-MILAGE / by 8K... Were as only thinking to use only the TIRE manufacture REVS PER MILE and use this data and input it in the PSOM.... Thanks for the clarification..!!!
Replaced my cluster 3 times still not workin..no bad fuses ..any help would b great
Great video! I’ve been having issues with my trans it seems to happen when the something on the interior side warms up. It will then down shift or sometimes shift really hard into 3rd gear. I’ve also noticed that the cruise control doesn’t work when this starts to act up. I have a 1993 F 250 XLT HD. I was thinking it’s an issue with PSOM but I don’t know how to test. Thanks and keep on making great content!
Hi, Hope all is well with everyone. Would a gear change have the same effect as tire size change?
Thanks for this. Was a tiny bit different on my 92 but matched what i read in some forums, it counts forward not backwards and didnt seam to have any limit to how often i could change it, it didnt even have a reset counter, n the psom port wasnt labeled but in the exact spot shown. Just got the tuck with a bad transmission but its been on 38s for 20 years n it was still factory tire size on the psom, this should help as i get ready to swap in a good transmission.
This was a great video. Super easy to follow for us who are not so mechanically inclined.... I need to replace the PSOM on my 95 f150, I would like to put in one that has a tachometer on it. Would that just be plug and play? Or do I need to do any wiring? Also does the replacement PSOM need to be from another 95? Or will a 93/94 work too?
It always been my understanding replacing a cluster must be done in groups. 92-93, 94-95, and 96-97 are compatible with each other. With that said, I have heard of people using off years successfully but perhaps that has something to do with the build date of the particular donor and recipient vehicle ?? Who knows. I successfully swapped a 95 cluster with tach into a 95 f150 with no problems. What you do is remove the entire donor cluster and just remove/replace the psom (speedo) into the new cluster and install it. It should plug and play. When people use different year other that I listed I have heard reports of a no charging condition or the battery light staying on, etc.
I'm pretty sure the psom in my 94 f150 needs to be replaced. The Speedometer does not work, the od light is flashing and the transmission won't downshift on it's own. Could it be the psom?
Same problem
Thanks for the vid, got mine calibrated down to 864 running BFG A/T 33x12.5 R15 , working better! Everything worked like a champ
I have the same tires except they are 10.5. I got the same number. My inital though is it's super low compared to what it's on right now. 967.. but glad it worked for you.. I'll change it soon and if it doesn't work guess I can change it back haha
@@LethalityKing the 10.5 wouldn’t make a difference just revs per mile which is 640 per mile for both tires. Get her calibrated down it’s a big and FREE improvement to your performance, shifting, even putting the truck in D and R. And yes if you don’t like it you can always change it again
@@LethalityKing and yes I had to adjust mine quote a bit down to 864.. going from factory tires to 33’s is a big adjustment!
Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea you could do this. I'm currently in the process of changing my psom out. Do these hold their last value when being changed out?
The program worked, just like in the video. But still didn’t fix my problem. Needle still bouncing and I am not sure the Bronco is shifting into overdrive. Thanks.
Thanks, you explain it very well
the tire revs was 640 how come you input 677 on the formula?
I think it was because he used a generic tire to give example but it wasn't the actual tires on his vehicle...
Why go to the trouble of removing the instrument cluster? You realize there is a single wire connector for the PSOM under the glove box right?!
My though too
You really think if he realized that, he would go through the effort of making this video?
My E4OD is shifting erratic. I replaced my tires with a bigger size. Would not changing psom settings make my transmission shift all crazy?
Hello I'm doing this calibration of psom what if I'm running front tires different that the rear which one would I enter info on?
I would say rears since front aint full time
Hey I’m having trouble with my bronco not wanting to shifting while I’m drive, it automatically goes to 4th gear. I’ve replaced the solenoid pack plug, the MLPS plug, TPS, VSS, and all fuses. I’m going to be replacing the Speedo as well and the coolant temperature sensor maybe even the PCM to be safe, but if you have any idea or advice where to look please share thanks again for the helpful video
PLEASE HELP
I went through this video step by step, however when I hold the RESET button and turn the key to RUN, I get the code “E 03”. When I click RESET again, I get 1000CAL but it won’t let me change the calibration number no matter how many times I click SELECT. I have a wire running from the PSOM terminal to a ground while I’m doing this. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Are all the tone rings the same. 96 150 with 4.9 factory tires. 235/75r15. Thanks
any road tests?
Were those bfg all terrains 35's ?
33's, but yes same tire
Does this effectively change the shift points?
The best formula is 20168/ by tire height divided by.6666 should give you calculation number. I went by new tires and it was correct went reverse with the numbers and came up with the stock tire height for a check. Tried 2 other ways and they where off.
Wow. I have had my bronco since 2003. Never checked this. I have 35's. I just reprogrammed it yesterday. Holly mother of Joseph, I feel like I have been missing out of a lot of power and great shifting. I wish I would of done this from day one! If you have a lifted F series and have not checked this, do it! Now the cat doesn't make so much stink, it gets and goes like i got a set of headers on it or something! It took me 5 minutes to double check math, and 5 mins to find a jumper, then 2 minutes to change it! I would say this is a MUST if you have an automatic. Also seems like my engine is a little more beastly. Over all it has definitely gotten rid of that DOGGY SLOW feeling from big tires. This is a must for anyone that is looking for more power or get up and go.
Joshua Miller my gears have been changed to 4:11 with the 6" lift and 35"tires do you know what the math works out to be for my psom number.
scoffman300 ill have to check it out. However i dont think the for system is measuring from axel rotation so your 4.11s wont bother the equations. I believe thats what i read from ford truck forum. If i can find it, ill come back and refference it.
scoffman300 ok
The calculations are made from tone ring teeth, this is directly related to wheel revolutions, so wont matter if you have 4.11s or 3.55s or 5.76s.
Here's one of the calculators:
(Psom calc on the left) simonslick.com/PSOM,%20Tires,%20Gears,%20RPM%20Calculator/
Also a link showing the tone ring:

Joshua Miller thanks . Ill work on this .i know right now that my spedo is off by 6 mph . When it show 60 im actually going 66 on gps.
scoffman300
mine was close to the same. Now its spot on! Im pleased with the shifting and acceleration change. If you need help let me know.
Good stuff bro. Thanks for the info!
did you use your last reset when you checked it if worked at the end?
So when I regear will that mess with the PSOM calibration?
Is it possible to change the psom from E to O? That is the problem I'm having, I believe. My speedo is set to E, but the speedometer is metric and reads too high, while the odometer reads too low, I believe. It's a Canadian truck, and I would think the PSOM should be set to O and not E. I've heard about people who have had this setting change on them....but don't know how to change it back.
Awesome video, thank you for the info.
Tengo una van econoline del 1995.
El marcador (speedometer) no funciona.
Le puse otro y no funcionó.
Le compre el speedsensor y no hace nada.
Los fusibles is ok.
Cual será el problema?
Saludos desde Puerto Rico👍
If your counter reach to "0" calibrations left...I can help with that.
What can you do if you do reach 0 ? I am still trying to figure out my conversion constant
What do I need to set mine at? 35x12.50x17 all terrain ko’s. Which is 602 revs per mile. I have 4:88 gears. Truck is a 1995 ford bronco with a 5.0. Thanks
hi i dont have the wire harness u can help me let me know the pin numbers 6 top and 6 bottom for conect negative and positive thanks
Thank you for a easy to understand video
I'm replacing my 97 f 250HD XL guage cluster with an XLT cluster which includes the tachometer, like the one in your video. 2 Questions, is this a plug and play swap as far as the tach goes and what will the odometer read, actual vehicle mileage, or replacement cluster mileage. I guess what I'm asking is where is actual vehicle mileage stored.
Mileage is stored on the PSOM, so it will show the new clusters mileage. You can either transfer your PSOM from the old cluster to the new (if the PSOM isn't the part that's broken) Or send the new cluster to a repair company that can program your mileage onto it.
Hi
My 1995 Ford E-350 the transmission shift early because the speedometer needs calibration the tire size 225/75/16 can anyone help me to get the conversion construction
Thank you
every time i try this, as im pressing the select button to lower the number it switches to trip and miles. i’m at 9.17 and im trying to go down to 8.10. it stops me around 900
update. i didn’t have the connector on my wire all the way crimped down. got mine set!
My odometer and speedometer are completely off , flashing overdrive light and rough shift .
Will this work for a 1997 f250hd? 7.3 4x4
My needle will occasionally bounce around as I drive ????
My 94 xlt f150 has an rpm gauge. I don't know what trucks they put the ones without in. Maybe the xl
I have a 94 xlt and don’t have an rpm gauge.
Tachometer was a factory option
What's the 8,000 stand for?
Same doubt
The size of the gear in the differential where the speed sensor is, 8000 is the number of teeth I believe
4:56 How does the speedometer influence a electronic controlled transmission. Im looking at eecIV and eecV pinout and I dont see anything from the speedometer or tach. Im under the impression that the MLPS, OSS
and VSS controls when to shift. Please what am i missing?
The VSS signal goes into the PSOM as a square wave form from the rear axle speed sensor. The PSOM converts this to a digital value and sends that to the ECM. The ECM uses the digital value to tell the transmission when to shift. I'vhad a few trucks with late upshift, hard shifts, no overdrive all from a bad PSOM.
Hello my F150 1996 4WD my tire is (( 35x12.5 R20)) how to calibrate my speedometer help pls
what if the thing reads E 03 and thats it
If I change diff ratios from 4.10 to 3.55 do I need to reprogram? Ford 10.25 both
No. The tone wheel is on the ring gear. Think if everything connected to the ring gear is stock (Ring gear to tires) , then your gear ratio change only changes the pinion shaft rotations before the ring gear/ tone wheel. Hopefully I explained that clear enough.
Thanks for posting....EXCELLENT
Just curious if an extra step needs to be taken for vehicles that are in KM? As in getting it to revolutions per KM
All math must be done in freedom units, not communism units.
@@mtxrawkusNo I did it in kilometres and the truck is golden
How do you make this conversion ? For example, if my tires are 671 revolutions per mile, what would I enter in my psom ?
Thanks man for the video
Ok, can anybody help me out here? - Great video - I have a 97 F250 OBS, how do I disconnect that shift cable, so I can get the cluster out to change a simple bulb??? I feel like I'm getting a lot of resistance from that cable and I'm afraid if I keep pulling on it, I'll break something....Many thanks in advance for some direction!
You’ve got to take the column covers off and to the right of the column you’ll see where the little white shifter cable connects at the dash. There is a little black wheel that you use to adjust the shifter indicator. Put the truck in a low gear while turned off to release tension on the cable. Release the copper cable that runs through the white tube from the hook then spin the little black wheel to release the assembly. :)
@@obsgarage6682 Thank you so much, lol! Now I understand! Again, great video :-)
@@obsgarage6682 Worked like a charm ;-) Got the new green LEDs in, and it looks great - Thanks again!
really well done - thanks
Wow!
Thank you for sharing!
Cheers! 🍻
Damn it!
All the f-150's that i have seen that have never been changed starts out 972! If you do the math on the factory 235/75/15 the number should be 943! I wonder why it is defaulted at 972?
It's the weight on the tires
@@rocsti5402 cant be the weight!
Why should we care to do this?
If you upsize the tire, your odometer will increment more slowly, helping the value of the truck.
If you go from 29" to 32" just add 10% to the speedometer reading.
While it's cool that it's possible to program it, I see no reason to actually do it
I f…. up my truck as soon as I did that. Now I can’t get my truck to go back to taking off on first gear !!
Great information. Thank you.
