Out of all the reaction videos I've seen about Neil, this was definitely the most informative & accurate I've seen. You really did your homework about the man and his method & gave me a lot to think about on the progression of the drum kit from its beginnings to the modern hybrid kits we know today and Neil Peart was very "instrumental" in bringing these kits and techniques to the world of percussion.
    Very well done video !

What is also not widely known s Neil could hardly hear the band from where he was. That makes what he did here even more incredible.

That and the version the band played was slightly different from the one Neil practiced on.

When I was young I asked a drummer from a local band who covered The Who, Led Zeppelin etc what was the hardest music to play for drummer, without skipping a beat he said jazz and rock. When I got started much later in life - 32 - I remembered that conversation and I decided to learn jazz, to quote a good man - "not because it was easy but because it was hard" after that any other drumming would be a piece of cake. At around 41 I got into a Rush tribute band because I had learned Tom Sawyer and YYZ and my journey with Neil began.

Totally agree with your assessment Dave. As a Drummer growing up in the 70's especially with marching band drumming in Bugle corps competition NP stood out especially with John Bonham and Keith Moon and Carol Palmer! All the Greats! I would of loved to see those guys doing this with Niel . More than likely in CP's wheelhouse lol 😂.

Amazing that you are doing these analysis videos I learn a lot from your explanations and start to understand a lot more! There are a lot of details in these solos that I could not explain to myself. Thank you very much and keep up the good work!!

i read, that snare was a '73 model. that one of his drum roadies bought used at a music store, for 60 dollars. i think back in '76. neil said that particular snare was not the top model back then, it was the "second echelon" model. was it brass over maple? either way, that snare sounded excellent!

The solo from “Time Machine Tour Live in Cleveland 2011, called “Moro Perpetuo” which features the new big band ending of “Love for Sale” and his solos from “Clockwork Angels Tour” called “The Percussor (I) - Binary Love Theme (II) - Steambanger’s Ball (Drum Solo).

This is the first Buddy Rich Tribute back in the 80s in wich Neil got no jazz instruction, just a solid Rock drummer paying tribute to the best. 20 years later, another Buddy tribute took place and Neil did took lessons with Peter Erskine, following the advise of his friend, virtuoso bass player, Jeff Berlin.

This was recorded during the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in 1991, that preceded the Burning for Buddy recordings (May, 1994). Neil stated in an interview that the monitors in the BR Memorial Concert were too low for him to hear the band and he disappointed with his performance. This is where and when he met Cathy Rich and they later collaborated on the Burning for Buddy recordings. It was during the Burning for Buddy sessions that Neil approached Steve Smith about how much his (Smith's) playing has improved and when Smith told him about taking lessons from Freddie Gruber. Neil took lessons from Gruber in 1994 prior to the release of Rush's Test for Echo, in 1996. Neil used traditional grip to record the entire album and used it almost exclusively on the T4E tour. He didn't take lessons from Peter Erskine until 2012.

I own two of the "Burning for Buddy" videos on VHS (If you can believe that :) ). Anyway, when I first watched this performance of "Cotton Tail", I thought he "switched" to one of his own drum solos when he changed from the traditional grip to his 'normal' grip. Anyway, the cowbells, the snare work, and especially the pause are pretty much from solos he's known for (Exit Stage Left, for one). When he paused, I figured he was "looking" for the xylophone to start the next phase of his solo. In any event, I loved the "Burning for Buddy" videos.
Now, I have a question for you, Mr Williams: does the placement of the drum kit in front of the Big Band or behind it impact the sound of the drums at all? In the "Burning for Buddy" videos, the drums are featured, so it makes sense for them to be in front of the band. I've seen Count Basie's Orchestra a few times (in recent years) and the drum kit is behind the band. So, I'm curious as to your thoughts on if or how the placement of the kit affects the sound of the drums.
    Thanks for posting this video!!!!

This was a good and entertaining analysis but I do wish that it had been mic'd and mixed properly. The audio of the reaction video is of depressingly low quality. When watching a reaction video or music critique or analysis it's nice to be able to actually hear the original video. My suggestion for future videos is to wear a pair of headphones and mix your uploaded video with the original video's audio.
