Neil Peart is the greatest drummer of all time. Hands down, 2nd to none.. Matter of fact. I felt bad the other day, When I saw an 8 year old, With a set of drumsticks, I asked the kid if he wanted to be like Neil, He said yes, I said kid? Just go home.. Because you're never gonna get there.. It was probably the wrong thing to say.😁 Then I said, Hey kid, Give it all you got.

In my estimation, there is no one close, because he was an intellectual genius, an avid reader and wordsmith. He was a poet, lyricist, and Philosopher. He learned to do technical stuff with the electronics. He was a true friend and loyal. His playing was fast, hard, and very technical. His battery of feels, and rhythms was comprehensive. The grooves and fills he played have been landmark and imitated by so many younger drummers....I could keep showering praise on him...

Neil started incorporating African drum rhythms into his solos after a cycling trip he took through Africa. He met a lot of villagers through his travels and learned to play some of their instruments and then he incorporated their sound into his solos. 🤘🤘🤘

I love watching folks do a first take on Neil's solo from Frankfurt. I'm sure you were expecting something fast and technical and forceful. Well, you had that 30 seconds in, didn't ya! That guy was a legend. He was called the professor because he studied so many different techniques and styles and seemed to master them all. Thanks for sharing!

There is a DVD Peart made called Neil Peart: Anatomy of a Drum Solo, where he talks only about this solo. The solo is called "Der Trommler". He took the name from the Grimm Brothers story "The Drummer Tale". He choreographed it to showcase the various different percussive instruments, including the marimba, electronic drums, and cow bells, as well as the different playing styles and rhythms. In the DVD, he breaks down each section of the solo and plays it at a slower tempo so you can see what he is doing. At one point in the YT video, you can see him switch from a more contemporary grip on the sticks to the more traditional jazz grip (5:33), and then back again. In 1991, he asked Steve Smith (former Journey drummer) what he had done to improve so much in such a short period of time. Smith told him about an old jazz drummer he had been taking lessons from, Freddie Gruber. Peart started taking lessons, too. Gruber told him to never limit himself to one style of playing, to learn and use them all. And, that's what he did. Now, what most people don't realize, is at the end, a good portion of the horns you hear are actually being triggered by Peart using electronic trigger pads and trigger cymbals. One half of the kit is electronic. If you look, you can tell the difference between the normal and electronic sides. Near his left foot is a three-way footswitch. Depending on the setting, hitting a trigger will either produce a drum sound, a horn sound, or both. Its why you will hear a horn and drum/cymbal at the same time. Not until the very end do pre-recorded horns come in. The rest are being electronically triggered by Peart with one hand while the other is used for the standard drums. In case anyone is interested, here's the DVD - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C4BBZ2?ie=UTF8&tag=drummercafe-20&link_code=as3&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B000C4BBZ2

RIP Neil Peart "The Professor" the greatest of all time (next to Buddy). He was not just a drummer he was a percussionist! I saw Rush 9 times they have been the soundtrack of my life. All three of them are absolutely incredible musicians. You should check out some more Rush. PS he also wrote the lyrics to all but a few of their songs. He wrote several books as well... a very intellectual mind. He is truly missed. 🙏😔

Neil Peart (Peert) always strove to give you a history lesson in drumming. He is a perfectionist when it came to this. His jazz influence was always present. His poetry and lyrics for the group Rush for over 40 years have had people endearing themselves to that band even to this day. Go down the Rush rabbit hole and you will not be disappointed. Geddy Lee (lead vocals, bass, keyboards and foot pedals) Alex Lifeson (Guitars, back up vocals, foot pedals) and Neil Peart will blow you away. great reaction keep it up. enjoy it all.

That instrument he is playing is technically called a percussion controller. It’s a synthesizer for drummers that you play like a xylophone. Since it’s a synth controller you can make it sound like anything you want. In this solo he has a marimba or xylophone patch loaded (those instruments have wooden keys), and I believe he triggers the gong sound at the end on it. His drum kit has a number of electronic “pads” that have programmable sounds. Some of them look like drums, some are the black cymbals, and he has foot triggers, too. Kinda like Guitar Hero drum pads, but professional-grade. He is actually triggering the horn sounds at the end with various pads and pedals. The only pre-recorded loop was the jazz song at the very end. In the early days Neil used a real glockenspiel, but the versatility of the programmable pads teplaved it with this thing in the early 80’s.
