Introduction to New Testament Textual Criticism by Daniel Wallace

- Textual Studies is the art and science (some would say only art) of determining the original text from variant readings exhibited by extant manuscripts. At present, a good deal of scientific methodology seems to be used as statistics, and computer processing is heavily employed. At the same time, however, TC is also faith-based (at least among conservative theologians), and the results are arguably impossible to verify. Faith plays a role in the belief by many that God has preserved His word somewhere among extant Greek manuscripts, which makes conjectural emendation unnecessary and unacceptable. As to verification, logic and the genealogical relationships between texts than can be constructed are often very convincing, but sometimes a decision is somewhat tenuous. Some critics would claim that no decision can really be verified, but many theories are accepted today without physical verification, on the strength of reasonable probability.

How to get the rest of these lectures?
Is that CS Lewis to the left? Great start to a fascinating subject, I'm hooked!
Wow. I live in Edmond and haven’t heard of your facility. I’ll be googling it! Great video and informative on TC.
14:00:00 "the next largest is two verses"?? The good Doctor needs to qualify this statement, (as well as the previous comments concerning Mark 16:9-20 & the PA,) for it's incorrect when singular readings are accounted for.
This is actually just the first lecture in a series of about 37 on this subject. I think the whole course set me back $20-$25 from Credo house, well worth it if this is your interest.
Wonderful info! But please, could someone mute his mic when he's drinking! 😊
Why were the current oldest copies found by Tischendorf not put forward for all of those hundreds of years?
Didn’t the people who help these Codex know what they were?
Great video but someone's been sitting with Daniel Brubaker a bit much lol
Make sure you fix Paul's letters.
The early church was expecting the imminent return of Christ, textual criticism would have been the last thing on their minds. Who cares if you misquote Paul a little - it's the last days in you're about to be raptured. I think that's partially why you have so much variation.
I hardly think so. See the article below. Nowhere in the NT do you find a dismissive attitude such as yours. In fact, the inference would be to ignore such a person. You really need to study the history of how the Bible came down to us. See book recommendations after the free articles below. Lastly, see the article on the rapture below.

Why some have problems with Reasoned eclecticism.
I John 5:7 is found in a majority of the Latin,
but not the Greek so out it goes.
Good will towards men
Doxology in Matthew
Without cause
God manifest in the flesh
Are a majority in the Greek but not in the Latin,
so out they go
The PA and Mark 16:9-20 are a majority in both the Greek
and Latin so out they go.
Even the “not yet” found in the two of the earliest(P66.P75) in John 7:8
some throw out.
If as an orthodox Christian you don't see a problem,
what would you see as a problem?
those are present in the textus receptus manuscript (greek)....textual criticism(nestle aland) is formed by two non protestant priest by the name of westcott and hort(1828) then revived by nestle and aland....they want to go away from 1611 bible.
@@THEBESTINTEREST-ne1hp Yup. Most just follow the party line. Blessings.
There is no such thing as a Textus Receptus manuscript.
The KJV's translators drew heavily from the Tyndale Bible - about 5/6 (83%) of the KJV New Testament is Tyndale's words and about 3/4 (76%) of the KJV Old Testament is Tyndale's words. In turn, Tyndale's New Testament was translated into English using Erasmus’ 3rd printed edition of the text compiled from only eight Greek manuscripts (all dated from the 11th to 16th centuries, with heavy reliance on manuscripts from the 12th to 14th centuries). The translators of the KJV didn't examine any manuscripts for themselves. What they used was _printed critical editions_ (not actual manuscripts) of the Greek & Hebrew texts produced by Erasmus, Stephanus & Bezae - and even the Latin Vulgate.
The KJV was first published, in 1611. The Textus Receptus wasn't even compiled until 1894 (i.e. 283 years later) by Scrivener, who looked for _printed editions_ (again, not actual manuscripts) of the Greek & Hebrew texts supporting the KJV translation, from which he then created the Textus Receptus. Since then, the Textus Receptus has been revised many times and today there are over 100 versions of it. So which Textus Receptus do KJV-onlyists say we should rely on and what makes that edition the one and only "correct" one?
Furthermore, the Textus Receptus contains supposed Greek readings that have absolutely no manuscript support, especially in Revelation. For example, the reference to "Thou art righteous, O _Lord,_ which art, and wast, _and shalt be_ " in the KJV and Textus Receptus at Revelation 16:5 is not supported by _any_ manuscript evidence. _Every_ known manuscript contains the equivalent of "Righteous art thou, which art and which wast, _thou Holy One_ ". Indeed, there is _no_ Greek manuscript support for the Textus Receptus' last six verses of Revelation - Erasmus simply created his own version of the Greek text by translating from the Latin Vulgate's text into Greek.
The Textus Receptus also includes the _Comma Johanneum_ (1 John 5:7) from the well-known early 16th century forgery called Codex Montfortianus that the RCC used to sneak the verse into Erasmus' 3rd printed edition of the Greek New Testament in 1522 and, from there, into the KJV and, ultimately, into the Textus Receptus. Before Codex Montfortianus incorporated the _Comma Johanneum_ into the text, the only form in which it existed in Greek manuscripts was in 15th century or later marginal notes to manuscripts dated no earlier than the 11th century, demonstrating that it was a comment on the text and not something John wrote.
@@Berean_with_a_BTh You ignored what I wrote. I didn't even mention the AV. Not nice. Erasmus used texts representative of the Greek Orthodox churches which probably came from Constantinople after its fall through Venice not texts of unknow provenance like P66, P75, Vaticanus, and Sinaiticus. Burgon suggested that they were not used by the orthodox whose texts were used for 1500 years and had to be replaced. Blessings.
@@jamessheffield4173 You didn't mention the Textus Receptus or KJV, but you endorsed the comment by @THEBESTINTEREST-ne1hp that did.
I suggest you read Metzger's _The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission Corruption and Restoration_ and _A Textual Commentary On the Greek New Testament _ both by Bruce Metzger. Maybe then you'll be better informed about these issues. Right now, though, all you're coming across as is angry and ignorant.
God warned us about textual criticism in his word.
1 Timothy 6:20
King James Bible
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Textual criticism is opposition of science falsely so called..
I hate to break it to you, but the TR, which the KJV is based on, was also compiled with textual criticism. Erasmus and others just had fewer manuscripts to work with.
@@Silky4everThe Textus Receptus is based on the KJV, not the other way around.

“The god that Christians believe in is amazingly stupid if it wants to actually achieve its goal of spreading this information to humanity by relying on text; by relying on languages that die out; by relying on anecdotal testimony. That's not a pathway to truth! And anything that would qualify for a god should know this, which means either that god doesn’t exist or it doesn't care enough about those people who understand the nature of evidence to actually present it.”
-Matt Dillahunty
Quoted by someone who holds the truth in unrighteousness. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.
God is not on trial, mankind is on trial.
There is only one way to be called just before the Holy righteous God. You must believe in Jesus Christ that he died for your sins, was buried and rose the 3rd day.
