In the video you say that there is "good evidence" for the existence of Jesus, without backing up that claim with any evidence. I would highly suggest that you thoroughly research a topic before making such claims in the future so that you do not mislead your audience. One book that I would highly recommend that you read is On the Historicity of Jesus, by Richard Carrier. When it was published in 2014, it was the first peer reviewed case against the historicity of Jesus in about 100 years. Obviously peer review is critical when tackling topics like this.
I am not at all religious, but I always enjoy these "biblical" videos immensely, simply due to the amount of careful research put into them, and the precise and calm manner it is presented in. Science at its best. Excellent work, Mr Baker, as always!

Absolutely. Makes no difference whether you are practicing any religion. These videos need to be viewed Historically and Scientifically. I would think the more strict and practicing of any religion, might take away these realizations.

8:59 Something I'd like to share because I feel like people might be curious. The process employed by the Nestle-Aland to determine what is most likely to be original is called textual criticism and hinges on the base assumption that text is important. And because text is important, it has a tendency to grow. It is assumed that ancient scribes would be hesitant to strike words out of what for them would be the holy word of God. Rather their tendency would be towards expanding the text to make something more clear. So if you have a section of text with multiple versions, the one you would assume to be the original is the one that's shortest and most difficult to understand. Because a scribe coming to that section to copy it would, if anything, add words onto it to clear up a possible misunderstanding, rather than taking a long, easy verse and cutting words out until it's difficult to read. For example if you have a section where Jesus is quoted as saying "If you can do *this*" but it's not clear if he is referring to something earlier in the text or to the instruction he is just about to give. You might add in the verb you think he meant after "this" to make sure the reader doesn't misunderstand. (This example is a little unwieldy but I promise it makes sense in Greek) That's the big one. But of course, you also consider which versions have the most textual evidence. So a variant of a verse that you find on a single papyrus and nowhere else, while not guaranteed to be an error, it'd be questionable why this papyrus is the only one with this variant version if it really was the original everybody else copied from. You also consider textual families, or text-types. As scribes from specific regions keep copying off of the same manuscripts and then later scribes copy their copies, they inherit certain errors or quirks and by tracking these inherited errors across multiple manuscripts, you can begin to understand how two texts might be related. So for example there's a family of 600+ minuscule manuscripts that Nestle-Aland tends to value fairly low in terms of how original they are. As all these manuscripts are products of organized, institutionalized Byzantine copying schools. So while they represent the dominant text used in the Middle Ages by the Byzantines, they're all dependent on one another, so their sheer number adds little to support their originality. Codex Sinaiticus and Vaticanus for example are considered to be part of the Alexandrian family of texts. Whereas the Codex Alexandrinus uses the Byzantine text type in its Gospels but the Alexandrian in the rest of the books. Usually something that will be a good indicator of a verse's originality is if multiple text families agree on its wording. Those are the big ones, I think. EDIT: Thought of one more thing. There's certain sources of error that are so commonly seen that if you can make an argument that a textual variation is the result of that type of error, you've pretty much already won the argument. The big one I remember is if you have a bit of text in a manuscript where on a page two lines end on the same word, there's a fair chance that a scribe might skip the lines between. Because if the scribe just finished a sentence that ended in "called" for example, when he looks back up his eyes will be scanning for "called" starting at the bottom of the page. So if a later line also ends with that word, he might just keep going from there and skip everything inbetween the two instances of that word. Another one is copying a version from a different gospel. So especially within the Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke, their wordings often differ and sometimes in really benign ways on really benign things. So if the scribe has had a lot of Matthew read to him throughout his life, even when copying Luke he might slip up and go "Okay i Know how this line ends" and end up inserting Matthew's version into Luke. TL;DR: The most originalest variant of any given verse, according to Nestle-Aland, will be the one that is old and well documented by reliable independent manuscripts and which is shorter and more difficult to fully understand than the other documented variants without being the result of an error.
Yes, thanks for sharing! It would be better and very important if we could discover manuscripts from the early 2nd century containing the Greek text of Mark, Luke, Acts, and the Epistles. It may help the textual critics to edit a text that is more close to the original than all the various texts of the famous NT manuscripts.
John 5:4 is part of the Original text of John (Byzantine + Caesarean vs. Alexandrian + Western). But John 6:4 is a late accidental interpolation. Pericope Adulterae is part of the original text of Luke (After Luke 21:38) instead of John. According to the Caesarean text (Family 13 of minuscules, per example: Minuscule 826), Pericope Adulterae is placed after Luke 21:38.
Wow this is so interesting to learn! I now very much want to read a ‘behind the scenes’ of The Nestle-Aland text. How did you learn of their methods? Was it included in the foreword/footnotes/appendices, or did you find out elsewhere?
The sheer amount of historical information that has been lost and will likely never be found again is depressing. Even preserving the smallest fragment surviving from a source over 1700 years old is an absolute treasure.

The fact that the Bible has zero margin of deviation & includes 66 books by 40 writers, shows it’s divine origin. Even with copyist errors, they’re minute enough, to get back to the original texts! and the more copies we find, just like in March of last year, the more evidence we have for God! just like we keep finding more dead things buried in the ground; so as time goes by, we keep finding more evidence for God of the Bible, Not less! The opposite can be said for evolution!

The Book of Esther is indeed included in the Dead Sea Scrolls but it wasn't until they could read it with enhanced photographic equipment that they discovered what it was. Someone in antiquity had spilled wine on it and so the text was obscured. The modern equipment they used was able to read through the staining and it revealed the Book of Esther. Edit: Correction. This claim has been debunked. Esther has not been found in the Dead Sea scrolls.

Unfortunately the book of Esther is refuted by the historical king Xerxes. The king that the Jews claimed was Esther's husband. King Xerxes of Persia wrote his own biographical history on his cylinder seal and Herodetus also verifies the king and queens existence, queen Vashti. Neither Xerxes or his sons nor external authors like Herodetus mention Esther. In fact, no historical author from Persia or Greece mentioned Esther but many local sources mention both king Xerxes and his actual historical queen Vashti.
@@oceanetcetera8328 Both the book of Esther and Daniel have been refuted by actual historical evidence. You can read my other comment on Esther but if you study Persian history from 550 - 330 bce you can see how badly the author of Daniel gets his history of Persia completely mixed up. This is a clear indication that the author of Daniel was not living during the time period in which the author portraits and also clearly shows how ignorant the author was regarding actual history.
@@ObjectiveEthics "refuted" is a very strong term to use and one that demands solid irrefutable evidence. While I doubt that Esther should be regarded as authentic history, the Book of Daniel is entirely different (although certain people who hate Christians and who hate 1st Century Jews would love to see it "refuted"). The Priestly Blessing is also used in lutheran services. I’m non-religious but grew up in a lutheran culture, so those words are almost a meme to me, but I always thought they were just something someone made up in the 1600s. To find out that they are the oldest preserved bible manuscript is king of mindblowing
Regarding the 'existence of Julius Caesar' tangent: we also have roman coins bearing the portrait of Julius Caesar, with his name written on them. Struck while he was alive, and, pretty obviously, in charge, or he wouldn't have gotten his face and name on these coins. You know, in case any one still has any doubt after that masterful video :)
But the methods of attack are so uncontrolled that I can attack any historical figure. Like i can say "if there was a coin with Zeus on it, does that mean Zeus is real?" or "don't the people making the coins have an incentive to perpetuate the Caesar myth?"
@@muskyoxes There is ample evidence, historical and otherwise, that Roman coins were struck with the face of the reigning emperor. Even the Bible itself (New Testament, of course) uses this particular practice to make a theological point, via the "Render unto Caesar" story.
@@MarsJenkar I side with the video that both Caesar and Jesus were obviously real people, and i only intended to point out that nothing will stop a myther. All your evidence can be wiped away by techniques that Jesus mythers use. The "reigning emperor" could be a mythological construction designed to make his traits and stories more easily malleable for effective rule. Who's to say? A myther always has a way out.
I was joking. Sheesh! Didn't ANYONE catch the absurdity of my statement? No. I feel sad for all of you. You could have laughed, instead of making ridiculous assumptions and needless counter arguments based on a joke. Lighten up.
The history of the Bible has always fascinated me. As a child I always questioned it. Not the theological meaning, but the history of when, where and how it was written. As well as the sources from other ancient writings. This series is a wonderful collection of the Bible's history.

Dr. Bart Ehrman, Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina: "Christian scholars of the Bible, including the top Protestant and Catholic scholars of America, will tell you that *THE BIBLE IS FULL OF LIES* , even if they refuse to use the term. And here is the truth: Many of the books of the New Testament were written by people who lied about their identity, claiming to be a famous apostle - Peter, Paul or James - knowing full well they were someone else. In modern parlance, that is a lie, and a book written by someone who lies about his identity is a forgery." - Who Wrote The Bible and Why It Matters
What is interesting with the New Testament is that 25 out of the 27 books were quoted from from about 55 to 115 A.D, by four men. Paul of Tarsus, Clement of Rome, Polycarp and Ignatius. That Paul quotes from Luke twice shows that the gospels were written maybe within 20 years of Jesus’ death. As Paul’s writings are dated to the 50’s, and he quotes from Lukes gospel which as his intro states uses eyewitness sources, we find accounts from Matthew and Mark in his work. This puts them in the 40’s or even earlier.
@@farmercraig6080 Nope---FAIL! Prove any of your claims. Show me any manuscript dated to the 1st century. For example, you have nothing written by ‘Paul’, only manuscripts by anonymous, biased scribes dated hundreds of years after the supposed events, many of which are proven forgeries IN THEIR ENTIRETY, and none of which you can prove that even a single word of the text originated with ‘Paul’ in the 1st century. Dr. William O. Walker, Professor Emeritus of Religion, Trinity University: “First, not a single early manuscript of an individual Pauline letter has survived...All we can KNOW WITH CERTAINTY is that the surviving text of the Pauline letters is the text promoted-and perhaps produced-by the historical winners in the theological and ecclesiastical struggles of the second and third centuries...What the earlier text of Paul's letters MAY HAVE BEEN remains, probably forever, shrouded in the mists of obscurity. Suppression and destruction of earlier manuscripts would suggest, however, that these manuscripts may have differed in significant ways from the standardized text that survived…In short, it can no longer simply be assumed that ANY passage was an original part of the letter in which it now appears, or indeed that it is authentically Pauline.” - Interpolations in the Pauline Letters.
@@farmercraig6080 Regarding 'Polycarp', you've been deceived by proven liars and frauds. There are many important points overlooked here. Papyrus (Plant material) Manuscripts would hardly last even 200 years under normal conditions but due to Egypt's dry condition somehow it survived other adversities like wars, termites and fire. While the Vellum Manuscripts made out of animal skin can last 1000s of years but it was very costly. So to write something the size of the complete bible on vellum was a grand project which only the imperial roman empire could afford. That's why all the complete Bible manuscripts comes after 313 AD when constantine legalized christianity. Before that the Diocletian Persecutions of 303 AD damaged many House Churches and the Papyrus manuscripts kept within them. This also has led to the destruction of a number of manuscripts before 303 AD.
If only one of these original papyrus manuscripts from the old and new testaments from a much easier date were blessed with heavenly characteristics to never decay and never be able to be destroyed by man in order to show their authenticity and reliability.

brilliantly done. You might add something on how ancient manuscripts were copied, from master copy on parchment to working copies on cheaper materials, etc. For instance, Middle Kingdom Egyptians took about 200 years to wear out an original master parchment by the mere act of copying to preserve the texts and records. Master copyists would make the master parchments, lower scribes would make the lesser copies.

I'm not a theist but really enjoyed this presentation. Regardless of belief, the Bible has played (and still does) a huge role for good or bad in shaping western or European culture and on that, the book or rather IMO A Library in a single volume, its history, origins and its contextual criticism should be of great value and time well spent. Some years back I discovered the British Museum's website with Codex Sinaiticus and found it a valuable resource, even for those like myself who lack any expertise with such older text and unfamiliar language. Can't encourage people of faith or lack of faith more to spend a minute or two taking a look at this marvelous text from humanity's past.
I think we have to apply the same rule of quality over quantity to the early 1st to 5th century writings as we do to all other texts. That being that the condition of the texts is relatively irrelevant, their very existence leads us to the understanding that humans were around that decided it was important to write down those events
I enjoyed this video. A couple of corrections (maybe someone else caught these, I haven’t had time to go through all the comments). Your date of discovery for the Bodmer and Beatty papyri are accidentally reversed. The Bodmer papyri are thought to have been discovered in 1952 (as reported by James Robinson in his book The Story of the Bodmer Papyri). More specifically, P66 was purchased in 1955 and likely discovered in 1954. It was the Beatty papyri that was discovered in the 1930s. You accidentally have those two dates switched in the video. Great video. Really enjoyed it.

Michele, I think the best way to try to convince Queck of something would be to have a respectful discussion about it. I think what you’ve commented comes across as stripping them of their dignity as a person by assuming that simply stating something will convince them it is true, versus engaging with them in a way that acknowledges their ability to reason and discern. Just a thought.

You could do a video about the oldest documentation that we have about Ancient Israel. An interesting document is the Hezekiah inscription found at Silwan in Jerusalem. It describes how king Hezekiah build the water channel below the Temple Mount, and it is written with ancient hebrew letters. It says that two groups of men started diggin at opposite extremes, and they were reunited in the middle, so the inscription was found at the place they were reunited. Sorry about my english. Another interesting document is the LMLK seals (LaMelekh: belonging to the King). And another plethora of coins and seals, written in ancient hebrew letters. I see that some of these documents you briefly talked about before, but it would be nice a more complete video about them. Keep up the good work

I once recommended this channel to people by saying: "He mostly used to just do royal family trees and such, but then he decided, 'Hey, speaking of "begetting", let's look at whether or not the Bible is true!'" Now I want to see a timeline tracing the origin of the text, when a manuscript was written, and when that manuscript was discovered. Preferably with all ten of these examples in parallel (and, heck, alongside the McDowells' examples).
Can we have a general religious chart/video as they developed over time? Would be cool to see religions other then the big 3 and have a general timeline
Wow, I had never heard that Billy Graham quote before and my first thought was that it was bunk. I’ve been a Christian my whole life and never would have thought such a thing.
I grew up on that quote. I actually paused the video so I could post it on my FB right then and there because it was gospel to my life as a teenager and the source of many of the elitist snobby attitudes we were encouraged to have. I love seeing it debunked so thoroughly. Billy wasn't a bad man, but ugh some of these things make you wonder.
It is not really bunk. If you select a chart and say that is the basis of his statement and the chart is misleading, then that doesn't prove that he used the chart, only used the chart or just said it off the cuff. It might have been a better analogy for Socrates, but it still holds water Having apostolic text claiming 1st witness testimony and epistles of 1st generation churches appearing in found print only 100 years after the ministry and only 180 years post ministry, 150 years post apostles to have a complete manuscript found of all of it and the LXX, along with Jewish-Roman scholars mentioning the ministry with a century of crucifixion is much more compelling... than to have dozens of Julius Caesars own historic literature, "written by him" but earliest dated 850 years after his death....so there is no comparative proof he wrote it or a series of scholars got together at some point before 800AD to craft a tale written by a General and Emperor in 55BC. His argument kind of contradicts itself, working backward from what he chooses to believe. That is a problem with self edited vanity press that You Tube is. He can say anything. However like the author here, both are very well established figures in history. One might expect much more writings of the first modern emperor of Rome and much quicker than one might find of a religious leader considered blasphemous in Judea that was conquered and burned with the population dispersed violently just 47 years after the ministry.
@@STho205 There is zero - Z E R O evidence that Jesus rose from the dead. Because miracles by nature have no proof. So yes, Billy Graham was 100% wrong. And he definitely used that graphic in his teachings. I say this as a former devotee of him.

@@STho205 Resurrection of the dead is a matter of faith. So no, unless it was a person I personally knew had died and I witnessed them alive again, I would not take 'evidence'. The argument here was that there was proof of it. There isn't, never has been, never could be.
I’d love to get a video on the Shapira Scroll. Originally denounced as a forgery, it seems to be seeing renewed interest among scholars. And if it’s authentic would be the earliest known biblical manuscript by a long shot.

It'd be great to see a similar video about all the non-canonical gospels & apocalypses (etc.) which are extant and were widely read even though they weren't included in the Canon. Works such as the Gospel of Nicodemus, the Acts of Peter, the Infancy narratives.
Hi Matt, nice video as always. As Purim approaches could you make a video about the book of Esther, Its origins and the story behind the controversy between the scholars on whether it should be included in the bible. (And is there a chance you would make a video about גניזת קהיר - "Cairo Geniza")?
It is in my Old Testament Bible, the book of Ester (Hadasa) not sure of spelling, but she was used to save her people from slaughter. I saw a movie a few years back that took creative license and produced One Night with the King portrayal of Ester, I enjoyed it, they stayed basically true to the writings, great movie.
@@lorebay2593 It is part of the Biblical cannon in rabbinic judaism, there was a debate recorded in the gemara(oral law) where the legitimacy of the story is debated
@@manetho5134 In judaism, there is a practice in regards to holy books/paper where you place it all in a "Geniza" and the proceed to bury it befitting of its status instead of just throwing it out. Sometime ago, they found one of these collection in the basement of a synagogue in cairo. In it was a lot of historical artifacts that shed some light on jewish practice from hundreds of years ago
@@nachocheese2823 ah so they like don't want to desecrate the holy text so they bury it? In Islam we have kinda of a similar thing, when we want to throw out an old Quran or a paper that has Quran text written on it, we either burn it or shred it into very small pieces
Once again you give a very good, succinct and informative video without bias. Well done. One thing I might add is that one reason why we might not have very many early versions of the Bible is because the Romans likely went around destroying texts whenever they discovered them between the time of Nero and Constantine (superstition is such a wonderful thing). That, and the impermanent nature of papyrus and paper go a long way to explaining why many ancient texts were lost (the dry climate of Egypt explains why so many early texts from that region survive).
I've studied the history of that time and have never heard this. All the writings of the time indicate that Christianity was not considered very important - certainly not enough to track down their manuscripts. At Constantine's death about 12% of the empire was Christian. Many texts were denounced and some destroyed in rivalries among the dozens of competing Christianities (or heresies according to Orthodoxy) that continued until only one view was allowed. Marcion used nothing but a version of Luke, some used only Gospel, declaring the others false, etc
@@smb123211 Well, it is only logical. After all, if you are persecuting a people you would also destroy their texts. If you are arresting someone for being a Christian, it is hardly that much of an extra step to arrest their family and relatives to see if they are Christian, and raid their houses for proof. Happens all the time nowadays, so why not back then? People haven't really changed over the centuries, and so will have the same modus operandi when persecuting people. And indeed, we have the whole Donatist controversy that arose in the early 300s because some people handed texts over to the authorities while others did not. One should also remember that Hadrian tried to erase Judaism from the Middle East, going so far as to cut down the olive grove at Gethsemane. Other emperors were just as zealous in their persecutions. Their approach would have been like that of the Nazis, persecute and kill the adherents, then burn their writings.
@@nicholasconder4703 It didn't happen back for two reasons - 1) Christians were a tiny minority and 2) Rome didn't care what god you worshipped - one reason for the longevity of their empire. What changed was the idea of a divine human - emperor, Jewish rabbi - something Jews rejected as blasphemous.
A marvelous video! Your thorough, steady approach to research and evidence always remind me why I love this channel so much. I really enjoyed your breakdown of manuscripts at the end of the video. It was a step above what I expected when I clicked the video, and I think it's a very useful analysis of how historians actually approach the written word.
A note regarding the reliability of the Old Testament: Although there is little variation between the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Masoretic, it doesn't mean we have the original text. The video was correct in saying its the same text that Jesus had, but not necessarily the same text say Isaiah wrote down. Ancient texts like the OT and NT are most fluid right after they are created and become standardised later. Both the OT and NT show dozens of signs of editing, interpolations, omissions and such. And the septuagint has traces of the fluidity of the text still in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE as for ex. Jeremiah and Ezra differ quite a bit from the Masoretic. Sadly, we don't have manuscripts from the most volatile period of these books. If we had, our Bibles would probably look wholly different. So the old fundamentalist trope that the Bible hasn't changed is misleading.
Matt Baker ... another excellent job (along with the early images of Jesus video) of keeping straight a myriad of facts with details and then weaving it all together to clearly convey the material to others. Despite how clear you do it, I have stop and repeat parts of these videos to take it all in. I can only imagine what a task you have in deciding what to leave in and what to leave out to stay focused and relevant to the story you're telling.
I spent some time flipping through the dead seas scrolls translation website. And I have to say, this makes me think that scribes took their work incredibly seriously. Errors were not permitted in their manuscripts. One thing I've come to realize while studying history is how little the human experience has changed. And part of that is the rigorous expectations we have for our duties. In any trade, long, grueling apprenticeships were pretty common throughout history. Learning to perform a task to the highest degree being important in many cultures as well. So it would not surprise me in the slightest if the scribe masters reviewed every copy they left their studio(?) against the original for accuracy, making corrections as needed, or even requiring the entire page to be redone. I also wouldn't be surprised if the oral tradition held quite strongly as well. With apprentices being required to recite, verbatim, the stories they were taught, and could not become a "journeyman" storyteller until they could do it X amount of times without mistake. Of course, that's not to say that errors wouldn't enter as people aged. But I think the general public at least thinks that oral tradition would have radically changed a story over just a few short years, as the storytellers took liberties with the details. But, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually quite rare. And that it was more simple errors. While modern life and ancient life are quite different in terms of our world-views, I think I have a helpful comparison. I do some amateur theater, and part of how I make it interesting for me is to memorize parts *exactly* with no errors or additions from the written script. I do this with quite large roles that have me on stage for nearly the entire play, handling probably close to half the total lines in a show (in fact, the smaller roles are the ones I care less about exactness! ha! doesn't cause as much chaos if the minor role drops a line). Anyways, the point is that the errors I find myself making are not complete fabrications or intentional changes, but little things like using the same word in two spots where it's supposed to be the same, such as "Listen here" and "Look here" or "quite sure" and "yes" or "anyways" versus "anyway" ... and so on. Things that don't change the meaning, but aren't exact either.
Unfortunately, the evidence shows otherwise. Dr. Gerd Ludemann, New Testament scholar at the University of Göttingen: "Demonstrating the degree of authorial invention uncovers the considerable amount of forgery to be found in the texts of the New Testament, and thus undermines the almost unlimited authority that is commonly accorded them. In doing gospel studies we should always be suspicious, remembering that the text in front of us has gone through the hands of 'Christian authors' who, supposedly inspired by the Holy Spirit, edited and falsified large parts of the four gospels." What Jesus Didn’t Say
Dr. David Brakke, Professor in the History of Christianity, Ohio State University, wrote an article in the Journal of Religion entitled, “Early Christian Lies and the Lying Liars Who Wrote Them”, which reflects the consensus view that the anonymous early Christian scribes who wrote all of your references were blatant liars, forgers and frauds: “Of the twenty-seven writings that make up the Christian New Testament, *at least ten are almost certainly forgeries* , that is, writings whose authors falsely claim to be someone else. They are six of the letters that purport to be from Paul…plus the letters attributed to James, Peter (two), and Jude. This number climbs to thirteen if one includes the Acts of the Apostles, whose author falsely presents himself as a companion to Paul on his sea voyage to Rome (27:1, etc.); 1 John, whose author misleadingly claims to have been an eyewitness to the life of Jesus (1:1-3); and Hebrews, which may not bear the name of Paul but whose author drops hints that he is in fact that apostle (13:23-24). These forgeries claim attention in part because they are now sacred scripture to Christians, but they are only the large tip of a vast iceberg of early Christian forgery…Such *literary deceit* was not uncommon in the ancient Mediterranean world, but Christians seem to have embraced the practice with special enthusiasm.” - Early Christian Lies and the Lying Liars Who Wrote Them, The Journal of Religion, Volume 96, Number 3
@@IanZainea1990 It has everything to do with it. You have no evidence that the earliest complete manuscripts of the gospel tales---which date hundreds of years after the supposed events---bear any resemblance to the content in lost originals that we DON'T have. But we DO have lots of evidence that the anonymous, biased scribes who wrote all your references were proven liars, forgers and frauds. For instance, just compare the empty tomb stories in Mark and Matthew. What did the women allegedly see at the tomb in the Gospel of Mark? "They were saying to each other, Who’s going to roll the stone away from the entrance for us? When they looked up, they saw that the STONE HAD BEEN ROLLED AWAY...Going INTO THE TOMB , they saw a YOUNG MAN in a white robe seated on the right side; and they were startled. But he said to them, Don’t be alarmed! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised. He isn’t here" (Mark 16:3-6). Compare this with the same story in the Gospel of Matthew, when the women arrive at a SEALED TOMB that was GUARDED BY SOLDIERS! "There was a violent earthquake, for AN ANGEL of the Lord CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN and, going to the tomb, ROLLED BACK THE STONE AND SAT ON IT. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen" (Matt. 28:2-6). LOL! Wow---how did Mark get his story so wrong? Now we have an earthquake, Roman guards and instead of the women finding an OPEN TOMB and speaking with a YOUNG MAN INSIDE it, the tomb is SEALED when they arrive and they watch an ANGEL COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN WITH LIGHTING as he pops the freshness seal on the tomb (proving that no one could’ve stolen the body!) and sits on top of the massive stone and talks to the women OUTSIDE THE TOMB!!! LOL! That's a completely different story! If the story in Matthew is true, the story told by Mark is false, and vice versa. The bible disproves itself. And if the author of Matthew was so willing to lie and twist a story he plagiarized, why should I trust anything in his book? The author of Matthew must’ve thought Christians were complete morons. Oh…right.
@@IanZainea1990 Dr. Bart Ehrman, Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina: "At least 11 of the 27 New Testament books are forgeries...Many of the New Testament’s forgeries were manufactured by early Christian leaders trying to settle theological feuds...only about half of the New Testament letters attributed to Paul - 7 of 13 - were actually written by him. Paul's remaining books are forgeries...there were about 100 forgeries created in the name of Jesus’ inner-circle during the first four centuries of the church." - Half of New Testament forged, Bible scholar says, CNN
No Christian apologists actually question the content of other historical documents as you supposed, it's just points to the authenticity of the bible. The bible and its contents are (I believe unfairly) scrutinized much more than the other historical texts in an effort to dismiss them theologically.

This video did a great job explaining why the Dead Sea Scrolls are so important. I got to see them in an exhibit once but didn’t appreciate it at the time. I wonder if there are still any undiscovered scrolls or manuscripts out there of the Old or New Testament 🤔
Origen wrote his 'hexapla', collecting the various translations of the old testament in his time (sometime before the 240's). He did a detailed comparison of various Greek translations to the Hebrew texts he had avaiable, sadly it was lost (like much of Origens work)

AFAIK _some_ of them are, it just doesn't happen to include any of the specific examples in the video. Wikipedia says that Oxyrhynchus p15, a 3rd century fragment of Corinthians 1, is in fact displayed in Cairo, Egypt. Overall I suspect that there's not been much interest in returning those manuscripts to Egypt because Egypt is (currently) not a Christian country. I'm not confident that this is the _main_ reason, though.

Billy Graham’s statement was not just based on New Testament manuscript evidence. There are significant extra-biblical references to Jesus and the teachings of early Christians. We also should make note of things such as how the Apostles went from depressed and scared followers after the death of Christ, to bold, outspoken teachers of the Gospel, who not only all taught the same message but were all willing to (and most did) die torturous deaths for those things they believed and taught. Nearly all historians, even the atheistic ones agree the evidence that Jesus was a historical figure is beyond doubt.

@UsefulCharts I'd love to see you dig into the Khaboris Codex. It is an Aramaic manuscript of the new testament that has pages which are very old indeed.
I went to a private Christian highschool and was taught that the dead sea scrolls had complete copies of the gospels lol. It wasn't until I took biblical Greek in college that I learned that the oldest fragments of the gospels are incomplete. Also some parts were almost certainly added later like Mark chapter 16 is not in Codex Vaticanus or any older fragments of Mark.
From an agnostic: Thank you for your post. I learned something new. But a quick and shallow dive suggests that it is a bit more complex. Here is a view copied from a web site: “Mark 16:9-20 has been called a later addition to the Gospel of Mark by most New Testament scholars in the past century. The main reason for doubting the authenticity of the ending is that it does not appear in some of the oldest existing witnesses, and it is reported to be absent from many others in ancient times by early writers of the Church. Moreover, the ending has some stylistic features which also suggest that it came from another hand. The Gospel is obviously incomplete without these verses, and so most scholars believe that the final leaf of the original manuscript was lost, and that the ending which appears in English versions today (verses 9-20) was supplied during the second century. Below are some excerpts from various scholarly sources that conclude that the verses are a later addition. Nevertheless, some scholars have not been impressed with the evidence against these verses, and have maintained that they are original. These scholars have pointed out that the witnesses which bring the verses into question are few, and that the verses are quoted by church Fathers very early, even in the second century. To represent this point of view we give below a long excerpt from F.H.A. Scrivener, together with its footnotes.” But, that being said, Thanks for adding to my journey.
Love it. Excellent work. In defence of Billy Graham, he never specified that 5000 manuscripts were from the time of Jesus Christ. There is also a good chunk of secondary references to the Gospels from The Letter to Diognetus, for example. Don't forget graffiti from Pompeii regarding Christians, which date the presence of Christians in Pompeii before the volcanic eruption! Add to this the intriguing presence of type AB+ blood on the Shroud of Turin, the Suderion of Oviedo and the Holy Tunic of Argenteuil, which also shares identical pollen with the Shroud of Turin. These are all fascinating rabbit holes grad students can lose themselves in and, well, nothing like this exists for any ancient figure, Caesar, author, philosopher or other. There is a signiture of Cleopatra, but she was not on the list.
FANTASIC! I always had difficulty pointing out when different manuscripts were written. Thanks for clearing up the Time line. Will you do a Family Tree for where the King James Translation Comes from? Or even a Christian Denomination Family tree? Perhaps starting with Canaanite Religions, going into the cult of YHW and early Judaism till you get to our modern Great awakenings and such......but let me not tell you how to do your job. Great stuff!
Never thought of tracing the parts of the Bible like this. It's fantastic. It reminded me of how I always wanted to see a timeline of Nordic religion specifically regarding Odin/ Woden. From the little I've gathered the figure is much older than commonly associated "viking" era.
Thank you so much! Walter veith has a Bible chronos too. Yours was awesome. consider like Paul splintered religions/sects of denominations of churches, how many versions are available today niv, standard, catholic, etc, pretty much write whatever nowadays. How about chart of pictographs in caves all over realm, in chronos, there’s a chart! starting at the Picts, I would imagine... maybe gobekli tepe? thank you for your consideration if only I found you before I covered my wall in charts already, ohh! The elements chart goes to 160, only elements 120 printed and placed out of order! Why? Good question. That’s the histery of chronos. Thank you
For some of the papyri (like P52) it seems you prefer the earlier dates that are proposed for the origination. There is considerable debate over some of the papyri (e.g., P52 could be several decades later than the date you put on the graph.)

Ich habe eine Frage: Ich habe den Baum am 18. Januar nach Russland bestellt, aber er ist noch nicht angekommen, wird er kommen, oder ist er wegen des Krieges mit der Ukraine nicht mehr da?
I have a question: I ordered the tree to Russia on January 18, but it has not yet arrived, will it come, or because of the war with Ukraine it is no longer there?
I really hope that it will come
In the video you say that there is "good evidence" for the existence of Jesus, without backing up that claim with any evidence.

(This example is a little unwieldy but I promise it makes sense in Greek)
That's the big one.
Fascinating! Thanks.
Oh I love this! Thank you for taking the time. ♥️

Jesus is the only way. We have all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins that may seem small in our eyes are big in God's and are worthy of Hell, such as lying lusting and stealing. But if we repent and trust only in Jesus, he is faithful and will save us from Hell and give us eternal life in Heaven. Trust in Jesus!

@@christianweatherbroadcasting Thats what i think man
I can watch Useful Charts talking about genealogy charts, timelines, and then pivot to talking about ancient manuscripts for hours!
Such a fascinating topic and I think more people (esp people who read the Bible) need to watch this video!!
Copies of the bible are not '"evidence of god",please read a definition of "evidence", you have none , the more the bible is checked against archaeology the more it debunks itself. The Bible was never meant to be a litersl history.
@@jamestcatcato7132 nope archaeological digs prove the Bible stories were not made up and the piles and piles of manuscript evidence is also corroborative evidence showing that we can get back to the originals; because of the statistic probability of 40 writers not contradicting, Proves Gods hand was involved in it because of the thematic nature of the subjects not contradicting themselves!
Did you Google British Museum and the Bible yet you need to do that!
You’ll instantly see pictures of these!
27% of the Bible is prophecy! that’s future history written in advance! God is sticking his neck out there to get a cut off if he’s wrong, but he hasn’t been wrong, so the end of the world will happen just like the Bible says!
You cannot out psychologize the Bible for God not to throw you into hell for all eternity. In other words, you cannot come up with a good enough excuse here & now, so you won’t on judgment day. If you say you did not ask to be born God‘s gonna say you should’ve been born again, that means become a Christian, so that’s not gonna work!
So disprove the Bible psychologically it’s smarter than you!
If you can’t the Bible’s winning!
We have better science in the Bible of how everything got here than evolutionists because the first law of thermodynamics and DNA both point to a creator; they’re closed ended arguments saying they didn’t create themselves and nothing within the material universe created them!
Again, mic drop

Not that it is missing from this video, but a separate video on the Nag Hammadi library would be very interesting. As always great video 👍
This was literally what I was going to suggest. That and other apocrypha.
I agree! That would be very interesting!
That was the first one that came to mind for me too. I imagine it's just a little bit too young to fit on the list. We'll call it number 11. And, yes, I second the call for a video about it.
Nag Hammadi ??? look up simony or Simon Magus followers "yes the one from ACTS". Gone over through Justin Myrter 100ad literature from the early church "pre Constintine and against heresies by irenaeus 100ad. Both wrote heavily about the false doctrines known at the time as Simony. Never before proven doctrine untill they found the Nag Hammadi scrolls
This was my feeling as well!
Update on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Book of Esther.
They used psychedelics to "see more clearly". Yeah, and I bet being stoned on something even like LSD can really Really REALLY help you see things you want to see.
Esther is a book that should be suspect as to whether it belongs in the Bible. It reads more like an allegory rather than actual history with Mordecai being some sort of Savior figure. Esther had sex with a pagan king! How is that honorable?
Where did you find this info!! I’m doing a little history report and need to cite a source

Yes, my church is also Lutheran (evangelized by a German called Nommensen) and still used the Priestly Blessing for the service.
Our cogic church also quote this verse and sing a song quoting this verse

Regarding the 'existence of Julius Caesar' tangent: we also have roman coins bearing the portrait of Julius Caesar, with his name written on them. Struck while he was alive, and, pretty obviously, in charge, or he wouldn't have gotten his face and name on these coins. You know, in case any one still has any doubt after that masterful video :)
No coins with Jesus, King of Kings?
Shocking.

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(A)(B)(C)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(D) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[a]?(E) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”(F)
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(G) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(H)
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[c] went out of the city.(I)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(J) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.

An interesting presentation of biblical documents and useful discussion. thanks for posting it.
Dr. Bart Ehrman, “The Martyrdom of Polycarp was long believed to be an eyewitness report produced not long after the event itself, often dated to 155 or 156 CE. Recent scholarship, however, has argued that the narrative is a forgery produced sometime in the early third century.” - The Triumph of Christianity, 2018.
Dr. Candida Moss, professor of early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame: “the earliest martyrdom account [Martyrdom of Polycarp]…is a pious fraud. It pretends to be written by eyewitnesses, but in fact it was not…It is a theological narrative written perhaps as late as a hundred years after the events it describes…At this point, we have to ask ourselves, what can we trust about Polycarp himself?…we have to face the possibility that the martyr we admire is the invention of the author. He is a pious, appreciative, and earnest invention, but an invention nonetheless.” - The Myth of Persecution: How Early Christians Invented a Story of Martyrdom

UsefulCharts channel is, indeed, useful.
I was going to request this and here I found you already made it on the same day! That's it, I'm recommending you to my family members who are historians.

I think what you’ve commented comes across as stripping them of their dignity as a person by assuming that simply stating something will convince them it is true, versus engaging with them in a way that acknowledges their ability to reason and discern. You could do a video about the oldest documentation that we have about Ancient Israel. An interesting document is the Hezekiah inscription found at Silwan in Jerusalem.

Wow, thanks . . . This series of Bible When, How, Who, Where's has turned the lights on in my head ! Especially your introduction to DATING the texts.
It might have been a better analogy for Socrates, but it still holds water
Having apostolic text claiming 1st witness testimony and epistles of 1st generation churches appearing in found print only 100 years after the ministry and only 180 years post ministry, 150 years post apostles to have a complete manuscript found of all of it and the LXX, along with Jewish-Roman scholars mentioning the ministry with a century of crucifixion is much more compelling...
than to have dozens of Julius Caesars own historic literature, "written by him" but earliest dated 850 years after his death....so there is no comparative proof he wrote it or a series of scholars got together at some point before 800AD to craft a tale written by a General and Emperor in 55BC.

Thank you for all.
May you be well.
Not to mention the many wars throughout the history of the Middle East, sometimes resulting in entire towns and cities being burned to the ground.
Would love to see a video on the apocryphal texts.
PLEASE do a deep dive on more of these!
This was a phenomenally useful video. I wish this had been available back when I was researching all this stuff myself. 🖖

Thanks so much for your kind effort to show all of this wonderful information... Shalom..
No Christian apologists actually question the content of other historical documents as you supposed, it's just points to the authenticity of the bible. The bible and its contents are (I believe unfairly) scrutinized much more than the other historical texts in an effort to dismiss them theologically.
Totally. Regardless of how much evidence there is, people just want to find reasons to completely dismiss it.
@@pianoatthirty if you look purely at the archaeological evidence, it actually proves biblical claims

As an Egyptian it breaks my heart that non of the manuscripts found in Egypt is in display in Egypt

Matthew 27:46
New International Version
46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](A)
Mark 11:12-25
New International Version
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(A)(B)(C)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(D) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
A hungry God doesn't know about the Fig when it comes.
You doesn't understand you're Bible you're telling jokes.

May the grace of the Lord surround you as you watch this video. May His love fill your heart, and His wisdom guide your path.

You know, I'm Lutheran and I still hear the Priestly Blessing whenever a sermon is about to end. So knowing that it dates so far back (it's closer to the building of the Great Pyramids, than Cleopatra VII is to the modern day!) is pretty cool.

Here is a view copied from a web site:
“Mark 16:9-20 has been called a later addition to the Gospel of Mark by most New Testament scholars in the past century.
Scrivener, together with its footnotes.”
But, that being said, Thanks for adding to my journey.
@@miguelservetus9534 and thank you for adding that. I'm no expert 😂, and it's been a while since college.

Will you do a Family Tree for where the King James Translation Comes from? Or even a Christian Denomination Family tree? For some of the papyri (like P52) it seems you prefer the earlier dates that are proposed for the origination. There is considerable debate over some of the papyri (e.g., P52 could be several decades later than the date you put on the graph.)
