  • This is the first time EVER Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach has let a member of the public walk the Roller Coaster! and its an amazing and weird experience all at the same time
Come Walk With Me on a Wooden Roller Coaster!
Bit of history The Roller Coaster - also known as Scenic Railway is a wooden roller coaster and built in 1932 and has remained operational since. It is one of only two scenic railways still in operation in the UK (the other being the Scenic Railway at Dreamland Amusement Park, Margate) and one of only seven in the world. In common with most scenic railways, a 'brakeman' is required to ride with the train to control its speed and to stop it at the end of the ride, as there are no brakes on the track. It is the second tallest and second fastest wooden roller coaster in the UK.
It is also a Grade II listed building. The ride is the most popular attraction at the Pleasure Beach
Part of the music video for the 1982 single House of Fun by Madness was filmed at the Pleasure Beach with the band seen riding on the Roller Coaster.

I went on this rollercoaster for the first time in 1981 age 15 whilst on holiday with my mum, siblings and my best friend. It was on that coaster that my mum met a brake man and they ended up together and produced my youngest brother. As a grandmother myself now, I took my grandson to Yarmouth to ride it again!

Well, I've just been on an emotional roller coaster ride myself watching this. My father Ted Wadbrook and my uncle Harry Wadbrook managed the construction of the scenic railway under the guidance of the German engineer and original designer, Erik Heidrich. John Collins (the owner at the time in the 1930's) instructed Heidrich to train Ted and Harry in the management and construction. This was essential as WWII was looming. Ted and Harry already had fair ground ride building skills, but now they could build and maintain the scenic and construct their own rides for the Pleasure Beach (Fun House, Veteran cars, Alpine Chair Lift and others).
Mum and Dad used to 'walk the track' of the scenic together on inspections (how romantic !). Dad continued to help manage and maintain the scenic (he was also a brake man when needed).
In later years (70's) the original imitation rock cladding was replaced by metal sheeting and Ted did all the scenic painting, as can be seen in the clip in this video and Madness video for 'House of Fun'. He maintained this up until he died in 1982.
Many thanks to Tim and the Pleasure Beach management for making this video.

Thank you so much for posting this fascinating piece of historical knowledge. I wonder if you know how and when the Botton brothers became involved in the ownership of this unique and marvellous piece of fairground engineering construction, only ask through interest when as a young boy (5or 6years old) I with my parents and grandparents used to have our fortnight's holiday in Great Yarmouth and would watch the speeding roller coaster in awe and wonderment, thank you again.

My father designed and made the light installation at the top of the first incline. I think it must have been in the 60's so it's been up there a while! I remember him telling me how he had climbed to the top when they installed it. I had no idea it had a name! He used to get lots of free tickets for rides at the Pleasure Beach and some of his apprentices had jobs there, so in the summer I and my friends would spend Friday nights going round and round on the roller coaster. Happy days!

@ Pamela Batley, Thank you Pamela, I think it is fascinating to learn how many people have such truly fond memories of this fairground ride and how much it means to them. Your information contains yet another piece of wonderful fact about this structure. I wonder if there are enough people who would perhaps be interested in forming a "Pleasure Beach Great Yarmouth appreciation society"? Tim what do you think?

I have been riding this since about 1972 when I was 6 with my then older sister.
Missed a few years in the 80s but have never missed a year since about 1990. Always have to go on at least once when we are there yearly. My daughter who is now 13 has ridden this since she was 4 years old. I remember her first time.

Happy new year to you and the family and all the best for the upcoming happy event.
Yesterday as part of an activity at the care home I work at, I got talking to a guy and the conversation turned to Great Yarmouth. It turns out he built fairground rides back in the day . You video hit the spot with him. The memories came flooding back. Turns out he was part of the group that built the snail part attached to the ride in your video.
Watching that I know made his day.

Wonderful - this was my first ever roller coaster ride (number 1 of my current total of 1247) and it's a park with so many fond memories - was last there in May for a friend's birthday celebration (I live 10 miles from the park)

Absolutely fabulous video. I've loved this coaster ever since I first saw it in the 60s. Was gutted when the mountain scenery was removed. It was so beautiful compared to how plain it looks now. There used to be a castle on the top as well. One thing I always wanted to know, is the Brakeman necessary? Surely the coaster wouldn't be allowed to run if there was any possibility of it flying off the track? What if the Brakeman fell ill and failed to apply the brakes. If the train flew off the track it would be absolute carnage. For this reason I can't believe that the Brakeman is absolutely necessary.
