The word, “Genius,” is used way too often, and usually undeservingly... But this scene, with the metaphors, and slow build up (lemon, to honey and way up), great writing, brilliant acting and timing, is nothing short of “genius.”
Frank, I think that it is *so* unfortunate that they named this movie "Fatso" because you can't even say the name of this movie without people wincing. This movie is a GREAT dark comedy, and it is very resonant for someone like me that struggles with controlling their appetite for food.
One movie to go down in history with any Italian/Italian-American family. I still use quotes from this movie. I relate to this movie. I will take this movie with me beyond the grave. Number one comedy of all time in my book. Non-stop laughing and too many similarities with my own upbringing. What made this movie even better was its locations. Bravo to Ann Bancroft, Dom Deluise, Candace Azzara and Ron Carey and the complete cast.
“That’s nothing. Did you ever suck the jelly out of a jelly donut and fill it with chocolate swirl ice cream?” LMAO!! I nearly fell off the couch over that line!
This isn’t just beautifully directed written, it’s almost supernaturally well-performed by Dom and the cast; the pacing and tone should be studied by anyone considering making a comedy.
i love it when his cousin sal gave him the candy bar and dom says, your my favorite cousin hehe..... REST IN PEACE DOM.... you were a great and funny actor.....
LOL! Oh yes Eddie. That was during the movie's opening credits. In that scene, did you notice how all the boys were dressed to a T in their white First Communion suits? :D
It’s such a funny scene but also so real when you see how fast anyone with an addiction can fall off the wagon and just fall down that path again. They went from water to the whole bakery 😂 just like I used to go from one beer to coke 😂
The topics on filling donuts with ice cream or other sweeties are true today at any Dunkin Donuts locations. There's donuts with fillings such as Bavarian cream, boston creme, cookie dough and brownie batter filling, cupids choice, and fudge crossant donuts. I wonder if Dunkin donuts got the idea from the film.
The "morning after" scene in this movie also fits this analogy. The awkwardness and even shock of bottled passions and repressions set loose and the subsequent resulting guilt and regret. Great movie...
The best is when Sonny rips the cabinet doors off chains ⛓ n all ! Nothing and I mean NOTHING is gonna stand in between Sonny and his growling stomach! 🤣🤣
This movie came to mind when watching The Golden Girls recently, where they started with cheesecake and ended up taking almost everything out of the fridge and freezer!
This makes me cry so bad. I know it's acting but as someone that has struggled with an eating disorder, there are so many people out there for whom food is like crack. And it sucks that girls will always have to be a size 0 to be gorgeous and guys will always have to have washboard abs. It sucks. I want to reach in the screen and hug him.
So do I Leanne, because personally I see myself In the late Dom DeLuise's character in this movie, i.e. a character with VERY LOW SELF-ESTEEM. When I was a senior in high school (fall 1980), I STRUGGLED LIKE HELL with emotional stress eating, primarily because I wore dark rimmed outdated glasses (which naturally led to me getting turned down repeatedly for dates with the pretty young women in my high school) AND because I was struggling like hell to keep my grades from tanking, especially pre-college calculus. My teacher in this subject was a nun with VERY, VERY LIMITED PATIENCE, primarily because my older brother had her as his pre-college calculus teacher seven years earlier. Unlike me, he was an honor society student which naturally led to this teacher CONSTANTLY expecting me to follow in my brother's footsteps. These two stressful conditions resulted in me GAINING AT LEAST 30 POUNDS from November 1980 to March 1981. Naturally this led to me GETTING CUT from the lacrosse team that month because I was so out of shape -- and it also led to my chances of getting a date for the senior prom GETTING FLUSHED DOWN THE DRAIN. ;-(
Boo to size zero. Why can’t young women see how beautiful they are no matter what size. How sad that they can’t enjoy hot apple pie with vanilla and chocolate chip ice cream..... and ring dings.....💛
@@cfpl2375 let’s not put people down for being naturally skinny. I know people who would want to. Be 170 pounds rather then 90 pounds, just as much as they try they can’t gain weight.
@@autumnmorgan525 Didn’t mean to offend in any way. So sorry. I understand that weight issues can be difficult for those that want to lose as much as those that want to gain.
Siskel and Ebert gave this a thumbs down somehow. This is a GREAT film and Anne Bancroft was perfect in her only directorial assignment! The cast was exquisite!
I love the scene where he was supposed to get the Chinese food, but ATE THE WHOLE THING!!! And he was caught! there was no lie that'd cover it! I'm not sure if was intended to be funny, but I laughed my ass off!
Just amazing writing and acting. A self help group that really helped themselves! You go from tragedy contained by the good intentions of restraint to unrestrained, hedonistic celebration that you know will sadly just end up leading right back to…tragedy.
This was one of my favorite scenes. It was kinda funny the way they were talking about food the way most guys talk about women...by the time they got to the chocolate-covered orange wedges, they might as well have been lighting cigarettes! XD I'll miss Dom so much...I have the tape of this movie and will watch it tonight in his memory.
Did people not know about the importance of cheat days back in those days? Couldn't his brother have told him that he'll get to have the food and drink that he loves once every 5 days, and tell him to just hang in there with his diet on all of the other days?
Yesterday I saw a guy that looks exactly like Oscar in this movie. Same hat, same jewfro, same size exactly and I was trying hard to figure out where I saw this guy before but realized he's just a character from this movie. LOL
The faces of addiction. Most people wouldn't see that, since it's such a hilarious scene, but it just shows that vices and addictions come in many forms. They start with just Hot Water, but soon that is not enough. They need to move to something stronger. Then something stronger than that! ... Reckless, uncivilized behavior like ripping cabinets off their hinges, threatening someone, just to get their hands on more... Replace the food with drugs and this becomes a very different scene. Just goes to show, we all have our demons. Anne Bancroft directed this film, and she did an outstanding job. In the end, it is only love that allows Dom to overcome his addiction. We could all learn a valuable lesson from this film.
Have you seen the 2008 Norwegian movie called Fatso? That's my favourite "fatso" titled movie. Even though it is incredibly funny, it has a little more truth to it and sexual humiliation which made it funnier for my tastes. It can be tough to find the English audio version, though. I saw it on Netflix a few times.
One of the best scenes in any movie. Impossible to find 4 actors like this again. Rip Dom
yes great synchronicity and feeling between them.
They don't make 'em like this anymore. The Corningware 10-cup stovetop percolator they used to boil the water was perfect!!
CLASSIC!!
Absolutely Classic 🎭🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely. Dom is such a natural here. He describes food with passion.
I just remembered this from out of NOWHERE. wow. it's been years. I am in love with this scene. "GET THE HONEYYY" 😭
It never gets old. Laugh every time I watch it.
Comedic geniuses.
Thank you for posting this clip. I need to rewatch this, again :-)
Love this movie so much. My mom and I used to quote it to each other all the time! RIP mom. Have all the honey you want!
My late father was a huge Dom fan. No one made him laugh like him
Dom & Burt Reynolds became good buddies! "Smokey & The Bandit 2 ", Cannonball Run , & Cannonball Run 2
R.I.P. Dom DeLuise. He was an awesome American actor, an amazing author, a good cook and a great comedian. Plus, he was super hilarious.
I own this film on DVD and it's always a pleasure to show it to somebody who never saw it.
You might like Eating Raoul
I can really appreciate this movie as I got older.

Couldn’t have said it better
Funny movie and alot of heart. ❤
Absolutely 💯
🧑🍳 very touching and hysterical 🎭 Anne Bancroft 🎥🌟
Saw this when I was a kid and this scene still comes into my head at the most random times. So good!
Man, the world is sadder without Dom in it. Another childhood comedy hero I miss
One movie to go down in history with any Italian/Italian-American family.

You can thank Ann Bancroft for that. She wrote and directed it 😊

"Didn't he love his corn June?" My favorite line!
Big luther That was a classy moment.
"I love cold corn". Eww!
Same.
You don't like a nice cold apple?
This scene might be the most realistic yet funniest scene ever in cinema history!!!!
one of the funniest and most underrated movies ever with a little dramatic flair
That black-and-white picture of Cousin Sal with his sousaphone was priceless!
This isn’t just beautifully directed written, it’s almost supernaturally well-performed by Dom and the cast; the pacing and tone should be studied by anyone considering making a comedy.
Absolutely!!
Love how his brother Junior is trying to join in the food conversation not having any idea the train wreck that's about to happen...lol.
"The only thing he could get involved with, I mean really involved with, was a meal."
And he didnt go 2 Dr Swartsman, he went 2 Ninos & had a larje pizza insted!!!

Junior’s face when he realizes he’s slipped into the fattest layer of hell... fucking hilarious.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
R.I.P Dom...look at it this way. Now you get to hang out with old friends you missed. Anne Bancroft, Dean Martin, Ron Carey, Marty Feldman.
richiebear1969 Don’t forget about Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Judith Barsi. They passed away too.
I have thought about this scene many times over the years.
I could ask her out if I didn’t like her so much.
This is so true and relatable.
Such a fat kid thing to say
I died at that part. Lol.
"Did you ever suck the jelly out a jelly doughnut and then fill it with chocolate swirl ice cream?" XD classic!
That's not classic. Its just a random fatty line.

No a recess peanut butter cup.
Calling Chubby Checkers for help is like asking the elephant to pass the peanuts
Never a big Star, but one of the greatest American comediants ever.
thank you Dom.
The grunting every time they mention food is hilarious.
I crack up when they moan when they describe the food lol.
Lol I know right?!
During the holidays when I eat dessert I make those sounds

Love how he goes from that happy face then sad

Underrated movie! Farewell Dom, you made us laugh, really hard.
Classic movie 🎥 sad and hysterical! 🌟❤️
Joe Renzetti's score was amazing, even though it was mostly variations of the "Fatso Waltz" and "Sweet Georgia Brown".
Believe it or not, The Sopranos brought me here. Season 6 episode 1. Members Only. Vito says "Can I get some hot water with lemon?"
Very underrated movie. Funny thing, Dom here was way thinner than he was in later years.
He later became like those Chubby Checker guys that were so called helping him
So freaking hilarious, a pure classic scene!
"With thin layers of bananer on top."
Hey everybody! Don't forget, Anne Bancroft wrote and directed this film. We'll miss her too.
Yesss
She was brilliant
Sorry man Her Husband Mel Brooks did this film.
"I make choorwwclate chip cookies with M&Ms instead of choorwwclate chips."
"Thay dawn't melt in ya hannnnnnds!!"
The way you spell it out in their accents is hilarious!
Lmao!!! Yeah that too was a funny line

They stole their entire menu from Big Sonny.

Lonniepics is right, I had to have watched this at least 70 times. Dom was made for this film. He's also good in all the Mel Brooks films!
D Taron dom deluise would have loved to meet Jennifer Lawrence cause she too is funny and loves food.
The best is when Sonny rips the cabinet doors off chains ⛓ n all !
Nothing and I mean NOTHING is gonna stand in between Sonny and his growling stomach! 🤣🤣
Its cause JOUNIOR DID NOT GET THE HONEY!!!!

The donut with Reeses PB cup and you let it melt sounds amazing. On the flip side I did try chocolate chip ice cream with apple pie and wasn't a fan.
yeah I do..I do like a cold apple but apple pie I like hot!

@SgtBaker16 Absolutely. Things go south the minute Dom lights up about the cold apple.
The ultra fat one with the mustache is epic! That voice, lmao!!
