    My grandfather designed a fold-up ping pong table that I used to play on as a child. Now that my son has found an appreciation for the game, I wanted to recreate his design. After much trial and error, I figured out how my grandfather had done it! It's a regulation size ping pong table that folds up to a width of 18" for easy storing and can be deployed and folded up in seconds. This is a fantastic design! So if you're a fan of the game like me, you'll definitely enjoy building this project AND playing on it once you're done!

      I absolutely agree. I watch tons of videos concerning wood working, metal works, DIY'ers doing plumbing or electrical work and it's a rarity anyone mentions who they "learned" how to do this or that. My father would notice a neighbor building something in the backyard and he'd grab me and say we're going over to Mr. Smith's house o watch him build a dog house. When I asked why, he'd say you can ALWAYS learn from any tradesman. It's free education. I learned a lot from their skill as well as their mistakes; but most of all I learned about life.

    This brought back so many memories for me.
    My grandparents had a ping pong table when I was a little kid. We played on that all the time, either in the back yard, on the lanai (as my grandma used to call it) by the pool or in the garage if it was raining.
    As the youngest, I got beat by my older brothers all the time, Even my grandma wouldn't just let us win, we had to earn it. My grandpa on the other hand, was more forgiving.
    So, so many wonderful memories from my childhood playing ping pong.
    You did an incredible job designing this table and putting it together. The maiden voyage, as it were, of folding it out put a huge smile on my face. I love your style, Drew. I wish I could be your neighbor. I'd buy a bunch of wood just to see what you'd make next.

    This is an ingeniously constructed ping pong table. Truly. Your humor, honesty, and straightforward descriptions of what you're doing help the viewers connect with you and see themselves in your shoes, building this themselves and likely making the same or similar "oh crap" mistakes. I am going to get these plans, and revel in the looks of anguish and defeat as I crush, err instruct my children, in ping pong. Hehehe. Thank you for yet another informative and creative project that we can enjoy with our friends and family.

But we could be identical twins separated at birth, I have been wanting to build a ping pong table for the new dream home game room. You have done this before… put out a video when I’m searching for plans or ideas for a project. If we aren’t brothers we are at least Kindred Spirits. And the Brass Flathead screw… that was incredible, as I add a little of my Grumps to every wood project I do because he started my passion and taught me all of my beginning skills that has been an almost 55 year affair with wood and steel!

    This Thanksgiving when your family comes, you can show your kids how you “annihilated” you siblings as a kid (haha Yea right).

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weight of the table sections and the outer legs holds the center up because the inner legs act as a fulcrum. You can add a locking mechanism if you want to use the table for something else but for ping pong, it's not necessary.

    Great build replicating the folding mechanism. Just an fyi for anyone trying to make a regulation table for training: table top material and top surface paint have regulation specs for density of material (creates a regulation bounce) and final surface matte (creates a regulation 'grab' on the ball surface for standard spin response). Finally, in about 2 years when that young man is cleaning your clock, please post a video of that to complete the cycle, cuz it's coming!

Per the ITTF regulation handbook, "The racket may be of any size, shape or weight but the blade shall be flat

    Hello. Quick question. Printing differences so the plan doesn't quite print to scale. The inner leg holes center to center are 3" less than final dimension listed on your plans. With this, when the table is folded up it would seem that the top doesn't quite bottom out in the base sides notch. It's close, but the folded top might have a little daylight between it and the notch bottom. Am I interpreting this right? Also when the table is folded open, the table side supports meet at the joint and stop the table joint from going past 180 degrees. Nice design.

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends how you fold the table up. If one side gets pushed more than the other, it WILL bottom out on the side. If both are equally pushed the same amount, it'll come close but shouldn't hit.

    Before I go on with all the compliments . . . what are the dimensions of the surface? Regulation 5x9 feet? And . . . which type of plywood did you use, it seems rather attractive, my guess is 'apple ply' (birch?). Hope someone can supply me these answers. (FANTASTIC base design, your granddad was a genius! And you're not so bad yourself : ) )

      @@FishersShop Ok, SAVING this video for sure. As I was not hunting for woodworking videos, but specifically ping pong table ideas - and yours is brilliant. Seems I must go to your website to get specific plans? But saving this video will keep all of that 'filed' for me, here on the great YT! Thank you again for sharing with us.
      Oh, and how I don't long for all of those labor saving tools you've acquired... it would be SO cool if you had a lay-person's version, for those who own hand tools, a skill saw, a draw saw, etc. Oh, yes, a handheld electric sander : )

    I love this. The mechanics of the whole thing are great. And who needs testing, anyway? My only suggestion would have been to go with a darker stain instead of the poly, because when I'm playing Pong I need the color difference of a dark table to make the ball stand out and be easier to see. I'd always imagined that's why darker colored surfaces and lighter colored projectiles were traditionally chosen for various incarnations of tennis. 😸

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. It's definitely more difficult if we use a white ball. We just switched to orange and it's easy again.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case you’ll probably want to use a light-coloured wood for the trim, and stain the plywood before adding the trim, so that the lines are still easy to see.

    Just bought the plans for this so I can modify it to make an outfeed table for my tiny shop. I just have to make it so that the top is higher when open and it does not need to be as big. I have been trying to figure out how to give myself plenty of outfeed table space without taking up most of the one car garage (which I have to share with my wife's car). Now I can break down full sized sheets of plywood a lot safer.

One of these days we are going to witness the fishing hat wearing, double eye staring, neighbor of yours giving you a life lesson over your neighborly fence. It probably be about the pesky squirrels who often carry off his surplus lumber staged for projects he has around his house.
