Why is it that people that come into money always do the exact same thing. They buy a massive but empty house, fill it with empty meaningless trinkets and 'party' with people they don't give a shit about. And then they wonder why they're depressed.
It's almost as if they feel completely obligated to throw everything from their past lives away.
Tellin' you now, if I ever came into money, I'd still be living the way I live now, just with some beast gaming equipment.

+matt4045 Well, I'd buy the highest tech house money can buy, though. (Not a mansion, just a house, but I'll control the fucking thermostat WITH CORTANA! FUCK YES!) And a personal coach... Gotta stay fit between the gaming sessions.

    • @dooplon5083
      @dooplon5083 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'd either do the same, or build the mansion of my dreams that has sections specifically tailored to my interests (libraries, movies, maybe a music section, etc.), but it would just be common sense for me not to just make it the "trinket storage that I happen to live in". Bitchin' gaming system's a must though, mansion or not.

I feel bad for him, he is so rich that all he has left in his life is money.
the joy of the being rich only last for about a year, once you get ''used'' to it, you start to understand that there really is something more valuable than money, and once you lose them, you can not purchase them back......

I guess the reason why Notch is depressed is because all his life has been dedicated to programming and making games, he has sacrificed his social life for this. Now when he finally has time to do anything he wants he surrounds himself with fake people at parties. How many parties did he go to before now? None! Going to parties is straining for an introvert and you put on a mask where you pretend to be someone you're not. I recommend Notch to just start experimenting and working on games, maybe when he feels like he has a good idea he could get together a couple of guys and start working more seriously.

crestfallenllama I feel like its less this, moreso that he never aspired to reach this wealth and fame: A good day to him was hanging out with his friends and just making/playing stuff because he wanted to. Now he has no friends, and a whole world of fake upper class stuff is available to him that he doesn't want because he never wanted it: He is a lower to middle class guy with the wealth if the upper class, he doesn't fit in either world and can't be himself.

It really annoys me that people think that huge sums of money = happiness and any problems a rich person faces are not serious because "they have it so much better"
Money is not the defining factor of happiness and making fun of them because they have more money than you is just really obtuse and idiotic.

FelixG Exactly. The thing is depression can affect anyone. Rich or poor. I could definitely see a guy like notch getting depressed with his current life. He is a guy that came from nothing who just likes videogames & never set out to achieve the kind of wealth he has amassed. He feels more at home with his buddies than being with stuck up rich people & other people that set out to use him now.

Not having to think about "should i get gas in my car or food in my stomach" is being happy enough. Not having to work until your spine wont hold you anymore just to get a couple of bucks is being happy enough. Being able to pay every single medical bill you have to pay is being happy enough.
Sure, money anlone wont make you happy BUT it is an solid foundation to work with. Some ppl dont even have homes man. I couldnt ever imagine to be depressed. Wealthy or poor. Being happy is everything you make it to be. And clearly those rich ppl are just attention whores. Not every depressed person is scream it out loudly into the world so everyone can hear it.
Sorry for my bad english. Its not my native language.

people are trained to think that money=happiness. well, apparently not. of course it makes material life much easier, in a system where anything has to be aquired through money (a shitty system of you ask me), but happiness is a different thing. some people will find happiness in the simplest things.

There are a lot of good comments here and a lot of bad ones. As many point out, money does not automatically lead to happiness. I find this video highly distasteful and insensitive. Your primary argument here is that he is rich, he is better off than all of us, therefore he has no right to complain.
Yeah, unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Depression doesn't give a flying fuck who you are or where you are in life. You are saying his suffering is invalid. Pain isn't a contest, though.
    Pain. Is not. A contest.

According to your video, he should absolutely feel amazing with his life only because he became rich? Well, let me tell you, my fellow human, that you are the one who didn't actually understand how life works. If the world was like you're describing it, nobody would ever understand or care about the feelings of someone who owns more than us. The world would be such a sadder place than it is now and oh boy I wouldn't like to live in it. Money cannot buy happiness, being poor also doesn't make you enjoy the little things more. Happiness is an individual concept based on your journey, not your luggages. /drop the mic/

You can't buy your way out of feelings with money, and neither can you buy solutions to all your problems.
There's an awful lot of things money can't buy, if you're a happy man with nothing to your name that's a better life than sitting in a pool of money feeling depressed because you don't have a genuine connection with another person, or because you're feeling like you have no goals in life, etc.

    "Notch it lonely & depressed"
    *Nobody care's*
He came up with a great concept, fine, he implemented a basic version of it, fine.
After that it was pretty much all other people doing the actual coding, jebb i believe one of them was called?
And pretty much ran it from after release as 'lets slowly leech the code from people who have coded in amazing mods, optimize them and then go HEY GUYS LOOK AT THIS AWESOME THING WE MADE'
Everything that can be found in the game today post release, was something that previously existed in a mod form.
Plus, he sold out, a community of players, to big corporation's, putting the entire game in jeopardy of random corporate bullshit like DLC paywalls and such. The man get's no room for pity sitting on a pile of money that if EVEN IF HE ONLY USED HALF OF IT FOR THIS. Could literally change the lives, if sent as donation gifts to people, could change MILLIONS OF LIVES FOR THE BETTER.

+FLLN He _did_ try some other ideas, and apparently had workable demos for some, but he didn't think anything he could make after Minecraft would live up to what people expected of him. He made a game that will forever be associated with him and trying to match the success of a game like that was something he found fruitless so he just stopped. Personally, I can understand some of his problems right now (even without his billions) and I don't see it as him being a man-child. I see him more as someone who doesn't quite know his direction in life yet. I'm sure that when he figures something out he'll start to shape up a bit more, but it may take a while.

He's being a big baby for sure. If I was him and felt down, I would just go travel the world, and not ALWAYS staying in luxury and high end. Try things that are more based, down to earth. Meet locals in every single country he went to, and no, not just millionaires. Normal people, someone you meet in a cafe or bar. Meet people who get to know him for who he is, and not just his money (which is probably the problem when staying in Beverley Hills).

Being able to buy everything life loses it's meaning, for there are no challenges left, nothing to work for.
The human being needs to work in order to function properly, just try to lock yourself in an isolated room for one week and you will probably become crazy.
Compare it to being max level in every game that you will ever play for now on, with every unlock etc.
You will become bored eventually, the progress system in games were made for a reason, to make us feel progress.
You can't progress if you're already done, humans need progression in order to stay healthy.

He started from not much to a billionaire by hard work and innovation so i can understand where his sadness comes from. Also he got very much pressured into selling minecraft because there was so much drama revolving around minecraft at the time, and that followed up by so much hate ill death treats and everything because he sold minecraft to Microsoft.

How many people worked for him? 200? 300? He could have given everyone one or two million dollar and still be a billionaire who doesn't know what to do with the rest.
And why is he waiting for his friends to "come back from work"? I know one thing, If I would be that filthy rich, no one who is important to me would have to work a single day.

I've known him a bit in the game development scene, and he's a straight up guy. Besides very talented, I enjoyed discussing with him about game design and technical challenges. And he always seemed to be able to put his success in proper context and being respectful.
If Minecraft didn't happen, there's not doubt in my mind that he'd be successful with some other game. Maybe not billionaire-successful, but successful nonetheless.
But he struck gold with Minecraft.
Now you be 'The Minecraft Guy', becoming an indie sensation like that, becoming a billionaire all of a sudden. You'd be shocked and confused like him.
Instead you choose to make a click-whoring video about him. "Trollol Notch is not happy, haha trollol please subscribe". Too easy, and not cool.

+PhazonSouffle I don't see how that would solve his problem. The problem isn't about the money but about how he has no objectives in life and no real friends to hang out with because all of them have their own jobs and/or families. Sharing the money would not solve any of those things.
Everyone being judgemental as you are just don't get it. The worst thing that can happen to any living [and half-way intelligent] person is having no objectives. At least having to worry about bills gives you the goal of fighting to pay for them. People have a job not only for the money but for self-realization -- a sense of progression and construction.
Anyone mature enough will understand this struggle. If you can't now, I assure you, you will.

Huge amounts of money only bring depression when they come all of a sudden and they completely release you from the work. What Markuss feels right now is the lack of purpose. He should hang out with friendly youtubers like Markiplier, Jack, hell maybe even Overwatch youtubers. It would do good to Notch as a social person and to the youtuber's rating. I mean, I personally would love to see notch in a normal youtube video. Or, in the best case, with his own channel.

  • @DEFkon001
    @DEFkon001 7 ปีที่แล้ว

This is a fairly well known issue with individuals that achieve financial success. The financial and lifestyle differences isolate them from their existing social networks. Trying to socialize with old friends becomes awkward if not impossible.
My suggestion would be for him to focus on something he feels strongly about. It could be the environment, health, the arts, the humanities, aiding the under privileged, exploring space, etc etc. Something he can "work" on that will lead to other social networks where he will be able to build common bonds with people not based on wealth but on goals, and passions.

Rich people have no right to complain apparently. It's really stupid and typical for people to mock a rich person for having emotions and getting upset. Why are they all of a sudden not allowed to be human? Notch's problem isn't an uncommon one either. Sudden wealth can be quite scary at first and a lot of people have trouble adjusting to the life style change. Is he a bad person because of this? No, he's just uncomfortable. Don't let jealousy or your own childish perceptions of what a happy life looks like dictate how you judge other peoples situations. Notch wasn't born rich. He knows what being a normal person feels like. It's you who've never had to deal with his problems.
