  • SINKHOLES IN THE VILLAGES
    The Marion County Sheriff's Office and Marion County Emergency Management are currently on scene at 17092 SE 79th McLawren Terrace in The Villages in reference to several sinkholes that have opened up and are threatening two residences. The largest of the three holes is about 35 foot deep by 18 feet across. Utilities to the four homes closest to the hole have been disconnected for the safety of emergency management officials. It appears to be isolated to these two homes with one of the sinkholes reaching far underneath the home. Golf course officials are now trying to drain the man-made lake to help the situation. Utilities officials tell us that should a water main break during this incident, they will be able to handle that...however, 20 homes could potentially lose water service if that happens. We will continue to keep you updated on this incident as it develops.

    For those thinking about moving to Florida: CENTRAL Florida (the area The Villages is smack dab in the center of) is known for sinkholes. Oddly, NO ONE has to/is obligated to tell you that when you buy property in Florida. (Apparently?) It falls into the same sort of classification as any other natural phenomenon. You can, however, go to local/county offices (I forget exactly which one) and they can furnish you with a "map" detailing areas where sinkholes are likely to appear. Just as you should look to see if the property you are considering is in a flood plain, so too check for propensity for sinkholes in Florida....but most definitely in Central Florida.
    If you buy/have bought property in Florida, there are insurance companies that will cover your home....if it is LESS than 20 years old. I have no idea what the premiums might be, but homeowners insurance can be quite expensive.
    BTW, if you are buying a home anywhere in Florida try and buy the newest home you can as building codes are almost constantly updated and a home that might have been insurable 5 years ago may be next to impossible to insure today.
    Another tip: look at homes near the one you are considering. The slope/pitch of the roof severely impacts insurability. A home with a roof that is NOT severely peaked is older and more expensive to insure.

      Happened up here in Duluth Minnesota. Someone built an entire development of condos with improper foundations and, yep, you got it. You couldn't pay me to live in either Hermantown or on Park Point in Duluth. Hermantown is a swamp and Park Point lost several inches of beach just in December because of rising water levels on Lake Superior and horrific storms. This has been going on now for about 8 years. I used to live down there and my former house washed away in 2012.

      The substrate in Fl is limestone, which is very porous. These owners ended up suing the Developer because they believe the sinkholes were started by a water main break, if I remember correctly. They were upset because a year went by and nothing was being done. I don't know if this has been resolved yet.

      A sinkhole is actually LESS prevalent than home fires. However, if you don't have insurance that covers sinkholes (I doubt if a "regular" homeowners policy covers it) well, you are S.O.L.
      And, as I stated in a different comment: counties in Florida have maps outlining areas where sinkholes are likely to appear....your realtor is under no obligation to tell you that you are buying in a sinkhole prone area.
      The Villages is an area where you are likely to encounter a sinkhole.

    • @barbrn
      @barbrn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're talking about the condemned homes, they can't until the holes are filled up with truckloads & truckloads of cement. They can't do that until the reason for the sinkhole in this case, is fixed. For all the rest of us, you just can't think about it. Homeowners' insurance covers catastrophic sinkholes like these, where the house is condemned. You have to buy sinkhole insurance to cover smaller sinkholes that might occur elsewhere on your property--an inspector comes to the house & checks inside & outside for cracks, doors not closing, floor not level, etc. It's expensive.

    35 foot deep? I don't think I'll go to the villages. Imagine sleeping your bed and wake up in a hole that deep, where you can't get out? That's scary. or your car gets sucked up in a sinkhole?

    Does homeowners insurance typically cover sinkholes?

    • @vkreeger
      @vkreeger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are two types of insurance. The mandatory that comes with every policy is for catastrophic sinkholes and must meet 3 conditions. It isn't that good because there are situations where your house may be condemned to live in but the insurance doesn't kick in. There is optional insurance with a lower threshold but is sometimes hard to obtain. It may require some shopping around for different agents. Ask your neighbors if they have it if you are interested.

    You all won't believe me but this is true years ago maybe even recent as well construction was filling in on top of Florida DIRT loose sand building new homes , yes water near by can n make the dirt around or under your home become unstable. This is nothing but swamp land in Florida. Some places never have sink holes. This is scary l live on a lake or part of st John's River haven't been told which haven't lived here very long.

    Crappy construction. Chicago is built on a swamp . You need to dig way down and have massive support . Not some crappy ranch houses on a slab. I would never sleep at night there . By the way , that is not a lake . That is water drainage built out during construction .
