One of railway history's oddities is how the class 56s have survived - give or take - pretty much intact whilst the 58s that were built later and designed to replace them have more or less been erased from the scene. Those 50s look magnificent. It just shows the impact a new coat of paint can have, when you realise the 50s are around 25 years older than the 58.
Yes. And when you add the inefficiencies which must have existed when 56 build was transferred from Donny to Crewe to allow the 58s to be built!?!?. Surely BR would have been better off to forget 58 altogether and to extend the Donny 56 build by another 50 units.
@brianwillson9567 Yeah, in hindsight that's the logical answer. But I guess at the time the 56 was seen as a busted flush, and building any more of them would have seemed like chucking good money after bad, especially when Foster Yeoman cited them as the reason they went overseas for the 59.

And to further the point reading a comment by a Freight loco driver elsewhere on TH-cam recently he was saying (in his opinion) what an good loco the 56 is/was even compared to the supposedly more technologically advanced 66s. Let alone the problematic 58s. One last comment arent the 58s bloomin ugly!!
Class 58023 was once named Peterborough Depot and when it moved in position between the two class 50s it was nice to see a bit of clag from the days when the class 58s grace the British railways all those years ago.

I never knew the 58s at all having lost the railway mojo a bit - I do love the 50s for all their eccentricities - they were (in pairs) the first locos to level Shap, and I enjoyed many good runs (and a few not so good ones) between Crewe and Glasgow behind them. But this is a very interesting working indeed and thanks for posting

I’ve only ever seen one Class 58 and that was around 30 years ago. Great to see one up and running. Does anyone know if there’s a possibility for any other 58s to be restored or were the remaining ones all scrapped in France?

Class 58s used to do the Furzebrook to Micheldever LPG tank trains, before they were replaced by class 60s, which in turn were replaced by class 66s
So that’s where Edna is! (56098)…Did my 56 Traction on her last year and drove her up and down the bootle branch a few times.
Hopefully 58016 can be returned to the mainline eventually

There is only one left in France in Metz however it’s unlikely to survive unfortunately.
