    Great gear load-out Christine! I gotta admit that I was shocked to hear the final weight on all of that... surprisingly low! You are the undisputed master of getting the most comfort out of every ounce! ;-)
    Thanks for taking the time to share your equipment choices for the trip (you've got me thinking about some new gear purchases now though, lol).
    All the best!

    Very nice vid Christine! You have super ninja powers for making 30lbs with all that wonderful gear. Isn't it fun to sit amidst your pile of gear and plan, organize and dream? I think so. Have a wonderful trip!

    Great stuff Christine! This is one of my favorite kinds of videos to watch. I love seeing what other folks carry in their packs or stuff into kits. I guess you could say I'm a real busy body when it comes to people's gear. One things for sure, you have made some quality choices in equipment, and from this angle it looks like you take very good care of it. Kudos to you for protecting your investments. This stuff isn't cheap, and as we all know, money doesn't grow on trees lol. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks Steve! I also find that I always get new ideas when I watch these kind of videos, plus I just like looking at gear. For me, these videos are like moving catalogues. Lol! I have purchased a lot of equipment, many times "just to try it out". Sometimes my excuse is that I'll have enough that I can lend out. However, you're right! I do take very good care of my gear and am apprehensive about lending it out. Nice to see you around again! :-)

    Nice set up Thanks for taking the time to share it with us.
    A Tip i would give you, Attach a knife like an Orange Mora or similar to you life preserver same again with an orange Strikeforce, pop a Wetfire cube inside it and your set.
    If you get tipped out and loose your kit, you'll have the ability to make a fire to get dry, and make a signal fire for rescue

    Nice video! When on a canoe trip or a trip where's lots of lakes and streams (or wetlands) I usually carry flipflops. To sit on during the trip and to wear when you are drying your shoes and socks by the fire. I use bio-degradeble soap so I can wash in the lake or stream. Hope you enjoy your trip

    I went on 2 X, 4 day 3 night portages in Algonquin this past summer. I brought along my MSR Autoflow gravity filter and was easily able to sustain 8 peoples hydration needs. They brought pump filters and shortly after seeing mine, stopped using the pumps style. Should look into it.

    Wow, great stuff! 30lbs is actually pretty good, sometimes my daypack weighs the same. A lot of nice gear you have, most of which I never knew existed. Good luck with all the new products you've bought, sometimes testing new gear on a trip is a gamble. Is that shower a 'solar' shower or is it ice cold? I have a coleman solar, but sometimes I heat up water on the fire and pour in the bag to have a nice hot morning shower. Thanks so much for showing and explaining your awesome gear!!!!!!

    Thanks Paul! The trip was great! Very relaxing! I got as much footage as my batteries allowed me. :-) Mostly reviews of some gear that I got recently and that I hadn't had a chance to review yet. I'm slowly editing videos and uploading them. Thanks for stopping by! Always nice to hear from you!

    Enjoyed your video, very informative.. Though i couldnt stop looking at, nor get the thought out my head of, in a SHTF situation, id be crying that i couldnt get that Les Paul Cherry Sunburst in a compression sack and be forced to leave it behind. Enjoy your wilderness, sounds like a cool trip : )

    Hi Sara, thanks for stopping by to watch my video. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love my Gossamer Gear G4 backpack! The maximum recommended weight for it is 30lbs, but I have gone slightly over before and it still behaved beautifully. I love the mesh pockets on the outside. I stuff them so much that my pack looks like a chipmunk! If you're good with the sewing machine, go for it! If you buy it, it's quite reasonably priced! We had a great trip! Keep an eye out for the next vids!

    Hi Christine, so great to see you again. Thanks a bunch for sharing your gear, you sure have put together a wonderful light system with out sacrificing some fun stuff too. How do you like that G4 pack? I've been really looking at them and have even thought about making one. I'm just not sure yet if I'm ready to go light all the way so the bottom doesn't fall out.. : o)
    Hope you have a wonderful trip and can bring back a few clips for us too!
    Take care.. : o)

    Thanks John! I'm really trying to bring down the weight of my pack without giving up the stuff that I really love. I'll never be able to reach ultralight weights, but as long as I get to below 15 lbs, I'll be happy. Now I just need to win the lottery to finance my wishlist! What was it that struck your fancy?

    You can cut off the top of a disposable water bottle or use one of your ziplock bags to scoop up water to pour into the Sawyer bag. I crush my bottle and roll it up with the bag. It pops into shape when needed and weighs nothing.

    I don't even want to think about that! Lol! I could have been on several very nice vacations already. Ha ha! I prefer to remember that I have been on some very nice vacations thanks to my gear, and that I still have the gear to hopefully go on many more. I try to take very good care of all of it so that it will last. Not bored? Amazing :-) Merci!

    Canoeing really is a great way of travelling. I really enjoy hiking, but I feel that I see a lot more when canoeing. Of course what happens is that I end up not paying too much attention to how I'm paddling, which is why I always end up going in the front ;-) I really like my little lantern too. I wish it weren't so heavy. Did you see my Vargo Ti Wood Stove? I barely used it so I didn't make any videos on it and I'll need to watch your videos again for pointers. Thank you for watching Bill!

    Must be nice to be able to find water as you go, I have to figure in water for the entire trip, gotta love the desert. but at least my pack gets about 8 pounds lighter each day...lol too bad it start out at almost 60 pounds.

    Before buying the Sawyer Squeeze Filter I was looking at gravity filters. I was mostly interested in the Sawyer gravity system, but Stick spoke so highly of this system that I had to try it out. I have to say that I wasn't crazy about the bag it comes with, because it is so hard to fill in the lake. Perhaps it would be easier in a stream. I'm trying to adapt it into a gravity system like Jeep over at EconoChallenge did. Thanks for watching and for the heads up. I'll check out the MSR one.

    Thanks Stick! We had a great relaxing weekend! We didn't do any hiking and very little canoeing. We mostly just relaxed and enjoyed camp!
    I had to mention you at least once. You've been influencing a lot of my purchases, present and future. You can probably guess a few others from the video.
    I'll probably do a review on the filter soon, so I won't spoil it now.
    The NeoAir is still somewhat new, so I'm treating it extra carefully :-)
    Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you! That's funny you should say that your daypack sometimes weighs that much, because so does mine. I find that I'm not so conservative with what I carry on a day hike. I'll take a lot of things "just in case" I need them. The shower is not really a solar shower, but because it is black it does help to warm up the water (slightly). I'm fine with taking a cooler shower, but I have on occasion heated up water to put in it. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Paul! It's not super ninja powers, it's hours spent analyzing a list and hundreds of $ buying lighter gear. But I do enjoy playing with my gear. I love organizing things and gear is not an exception. Right after making this video I packed my pack and then spread out all of Dave's gear in the same way for him. I get to play with my gear and his :-) We went on the trip already (I pack the day before). It was wonderful! Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm so excited for you! How old are your kids? I still enjoy car camping, but it's really nice to get to the backcountry! You seem to have figured out how to save money (I'm terrible at that! I'm easily seduced by new gear!). My advice to anyone transitioning is: 1) Rethink the way you sleep/shelter; 2) Rethink the way you eat; and 3) Make a detailed list of all your gear and analyse the weights. Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it :-)

    i would question wearing brand new footwear because you never know,if you get a blister on your foot it would put a serious damper on your trip.i'd try them out at least 1 time prior to your trip.as far as everything else,it look's like you coverd all the bases very well,have fun.....

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol! Me too, which is why I thought it would be fun to do one of these. The Bahco Laplander is really nice! It goes with me every time now. I have the Trail Blazer Sawwvivor which is what I carried last year and my boyfriend has the Sierra Saw. I definitely prefer the Laplander. It's just so much better to carry and it cuts beautifully! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!

    Ha ha! It's my boyfriend's guitar! He'd be the one crying! Lol! I've moved several times in my life (usually between two continents), and one thing I've learned is that you can't always take everything that you own and what you think you can't live without today is easily forgotten tomorrow. It was a short trip but it was wonderfully relaxing! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!

    Me too! I'm aiming for a backpack with a base weight below 15lbs. It's a work in progress. It's slow progress because the lighter stuff is heavier on your wallet. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for watching the video. It sure is a long one, lol! I try to keep my knife handy the whole time I'm outdoors. Sometimes that means on my belt, sometimes on a carabiner attached to my belt loop, but sometimes I do loop it on to my backpack waistbelt or attach it to my backpack instead. I did end up putting all the contents of my altoids tin survival kit in to the waterproof case and clipping that on to my PFD. Unfortunately I can't fit a Wetfire in there, just a tampon.

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, it was 3 lunches, 3 days worth of snacks, 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners, all for 2 people. I need to get another one of those cuben fiber food bags so I can divide the food between Dave's pack and mine. Or then, carry the tent and let him carry the food! Lol!

  • @CampSmarts
    @CampSmarts  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will usually carry "camp shoes" that I can also swim in. I'm too scared of stepping on a rock or stick in the water and cutting myself, especially if I'm backpacking where my feet are the most important. What soap do you use? I have Camp Suds but they say to keep away from any water source because it is only biodegradable in the soil. They even suggest that you make a hole for the sudsy water. I just bought some Oneka shampoo which they say is water safe but I'm skeptical.

    Thanks Todd! I don't know what happened to Maddy the Goose! I think we should sign a petition and get him to make some new videos. It seems there are too many of us missing him. He played a really big part in my planning and preparing for my first canoe trips last year. I thoroughly enjoy his videos! Thanks for watching!

    Lol! This was filmed just before the Labour Day long weekend! I haven't downloaded Power director yet. I used Video Browser which is what my camera came with. I think I'm going to use Movie Maker until I find something I like better, otherwise it might be another 4 months before my next video ;-) I'm not sure what's going on with Troy & the Goose but I hope they're just taking a break and will be back soon. Thanks for watching!

    (Blush!) Yeah! I debated posting it! I even had a little conversation going on my Facebook Camp Smarts page about ideal video length. It's a hard video to make though, because there are so many things to pack, and once I get started on gear, I like to talk, Lol! This was just before I packed for my trip. I had just put all my gear out on the floor and figured it was a good time to film it, so I didn't have much time to plan it.

    Am I serious? Yeah! Of course! I'm a firm believer that I can look and smell as good out in the backcountry as I do at home. It doesn't weigh much, doesn't occupy much space in my pack and makes me feel much more comfortable.

    Video a bit long. Lots of hesitation and filler.
    Suggest shorter videos with clear messages for easier viewing. You'll get more hits.
    I can always use advice on gear, but I can pack in less than 35 minutes, so I wouldn't want to view this the day of, or day before camping.
