I enjoyed the review and the anecdotes, but a point of order: it's completely possible to play ECO in singleplayer. Just tweak the settings to gain stars faster, and to require less material for crafting. It's a huge timesink and you have to be committed to doing literally every task and profession in the game, since all the tech is interconnected, but if you like progressing up an enormous tech tree and can keep all of the many crafting chains straight in your head, it is quite enjoyable even solo.
@@cavejohnson982 There's presets for different kinds of servers, including a solo-style game. If you start the dedicated server, you have full control over the parameters of the simulation through a simple GUI. The solo preset is fine, though if you want a faster game, there's definitely things you can do - but don't worry about it too much, since you can change those at any time. If you find yourself waiting too much or doing too much grind for your fun, just make crafting faster or yield more. There's quite a range of options :)
@@cavejohnson982 You can change the settings in an ongoing game, so I would start with the "no collaboration" preset. Then as you play and get a sense for how the progression feels, depending on how challenging/grindy you want the game to be, you can use admin commands to adjust the settings so you can get stars faster (needed to take on new professions), and/or increase XP rate (or edit the Difficulty.eco file directly, if you prefer).
This is the most scariest game that I still want to get; I got no friends that has that amount of time to invest into this, amongst other games. This might honestly convince me to buy it for the solo experience or the occasional friends
I was one of the major kickstarter backers for Eco way back in the day, I remember playing it for a few hours at launch and immediately getting overwhelmed by my social anxiety when it came to just dropping into a server and playing. Sadly it had ballooned in scope more than I was comfortable with. In the end I watched a few videos about the game, felt my money was well spent for others enjoyment, and then proceeded to forget the game ever existed until this popped up on my feed. I am really glad the law system they implemented turned out to be this compelling though, I remember the early feedback stage and hype when it was first revealed and developed.
sounds kinda like civcraft, I like it edit: One of the best features of CivCraft (multiplayer minecraft mod) was PrisonPearl. This mod made it so that if you killed a player while an Ender Pearl was on your hotbar, that player would respawn in the End, and their 'soul' would be stored in your Ender Pearl, kinda like a Pokémon ball. The victim could only be released by someone having access to their Pearl. Since there was no server-banning (apart from if you were a cheater), it was up to players themselves to police the gameworld and maintain enormous obsidian vaults for storing criminals' Pearls. Occasionally, prisoners would be freed if their comrades launched a raid on a vault, managing to steal the Pearls back.
Oh my god, you just awoke a long buried memory. I remember trying that server out wanting to just explore and learn about each place, but was too noobish to get enough money for food and eventually gave up. It's been a good decade, i shouls check back in.
If anyone wants to play CivCraft again, there is a spiritual successor of it called CivMC. Its pretty active, and it has many nations. Me personally, i have a dual citizenship in Pavia and Northfort.
I kinda remember hearing the concept for this game a long long time ago. It’s kinds hard to forget because the whole meteor thing is kinda iconic. This was not what I imagined it was though, but this is definitely very interesting.
2:06 also, on that comparison, have you heard of One Hour One life? The way you explained the complexities of crafting is the same way you would explain the crafting in that game too.
The fact that there was corruption between the rich occupations and the government is actually mesmerising. This game threads the line between simulation of reality and social experiment. Are people inclined to act corrupt because of the modern influence of power or does the corruption come from a “natural” tendency, from which modern corruption evolved? It would be so cool to study this tbh
Or does it come from the in-game environmental factors? For instance, the ability to get rich and be relied upon making people like their newfound power and want to hold onto it. Like the age-old saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely". Though in reality, I think it's clearly a complex combination of all of these factors, and many more.
ECO has been such a fun game over the years. I really wish we had some game like Minecraft take some features from it and play up the need to form a community online. Having land deeds, stores, actually needing to rely on other players and so on would be so welcomed... If you want some ECO experience like no other, try the White Tiger server at some point. It's the hardest official server, you can do politics all day every day and still be only a tiny part in a giant machine of some of the best ECO players...
Haven and Hearth is a brilliant game in just this way. Unfortunately, _extremely_ unfriendly (there's plenty of friendly players, but it only takes one bastard to ruin your game, and there's plenty of those too :D ), and you can't make a private server to play in a more moderated environment :'( It has quite a few features you don't see in games often, and really builds on the persistent MMO world. Minecraft and Eco are still the best options for more chill play, though. It's lovely at least the indies try to keep the UO/SWG vibe alive :)
I’m developing a Minecraft TFC mod pack heavily inspired by this game, there will be classes and only certain classes will be able to perform actions(loggers are the only one chosen can chop wood, miners are the only one who can mine, etc) packs called “Terra Firma:RPG” and is still I. Alpha development.
Yeah, and a whole lot more including dozens of origins all whithe their specialties,Dwards being excellent miners, masons, blacksmiths etc while elves are more agricultural.Oh and my favourite mod? Epic fight.
I think everyone should be able to "chop wood", at the very minimum level. Say, "survival skills" as a subclass? That way someone could at least make a log cabin, chop fire wood. But not as a profession. Means some old hermit could go live at a lake or river and live off the land, and sell what little abundance he creates.
Hey there CygnusMC. Well done with the review. why have i never heard of this game? this is amazing! i can see some improvements to make it feel more like a "game" you want to play instead of a "chore you have to do" but the concept is awsome!
Social aspect sounds fun. gameplay itself sounds tedious af if all you're doing is harvesting/mining, and building, it really seems like you need alot of friends on this to make it fun. Since you mentioned the comparison to RUST, I'd like to say the big difference is RUST has combat. not saying ECO needs that, but thats what certainly makes RUST engaging.
It's for people who like working. It's all pretty chill and relaxing, while you slowly transform the world around you (while progressively increasing your ability to affect the world). It's a lot more like Euro Truck Simulator than a typical Minecraft server, and it's built a lot about having a community on a persistent server (with relatively frequent resets - the default gives you just 30 days to destroy the Meteor, but there's hundreds of configuration options to tweak the simulation your way). Making a game engaging by building it around PvP combat (especially "hardcore", with item loss or permadeath) is a cheap copout, IMO. Fake gameplay, built on having the players provide the gameplay... without really giving them anything interesting to do beyond being awful to each other :D And it's very rare to see such a game do anything interesting to the formula, because the fun tends to come from the rush of fighting other players, rather than interesting gameplay itself). I've been bored with combat games for more than a decade now. They focus too much on immediate satisfaction (or frustration), rather than a slow climb, building up, taking your time, finding friends...
I really, really loved Eco's concept, it's just very tedious and overwhelming to play. I wish they focused on letting you play with a handful of players or even have a good singleplayer experience. It's meant to be played with dozens of people, it just isn't for me.
As an avid Eco player, I am happy to see it more on youtube. If you do want a long-running server where all settlements and laws and currency are setup only by players, then I would recommend Dadspeed server.
I remember seeing this game many years ago, and wanting to play it badly, but it does appear to be made specifically for a classroom, where you can get a large number of people working together for a dedicated time each week. Good to see that server play is possible, albeit cutthroat lol. Reminiscent of Wurm Online but with less magic.
Game worlds are far too small imo. That and the reason why not many people play is because it requires you to work together, and theres no built in cap to how many people can take a job. Like, if there was a cap on 4 farmers, 4 chefs, etc, then your jobs cant be taken away and you will be able to log on and do something. Maybe that should be a server side setting.
I absolutely love Eco! Alter the settings and you can play it in single player. I have had several worlds where I turned off the meteor where I could just vibe. I learned everything when playing on a community server and its discord. Had people help me through the game and understand the mechanics. Definitely helpful to get a head start, but I do love to return to the single payer life.
Its more than possible to play the game solo. I've done it myself and shot the meteor down with 19 days left before impact, starting with 30 days. The neat thing about single player is that time only runs while you are playing, unlike a multiplayer server.
"We of the blue nation admire America" *two seconds later* "let's print tons of money and tax everything to death to build this giant town hall and add tons of control and fixed prices". huh I do wonder how homesteading vs communes would behave within the game's engine. Genuinely what would be the effect on player behavior and what the prices would settle on.
it's crazy to see how Minecraft essentially became the peak of gaming, with all these other games years and years later coming out all using the same basic premises and design points, building from that first initial release.
Note on the economic systems of Read and Blue. Red seems to be more of a socialist state rather than a communist one, more akin to many places in modern Europe (could be argued its an oligarchy as well, with the unions setting their own price). While Blue is a failed Libertarian state, not American. The US irl has welfare and regulations lol
Had this on my wishlist for 2+ years... well, just realised what year it is so it's probably 4-5 years now. This is the most comprehensive video that I have seen about this and it definitely sent this game up to the very top of my wishlist. The only issue why I haven't bought it yet is because I got no friends who has that amount of time to invest into this. Not only that, we also do have clashing schedules on top of our limited free time. I really wish I could play this, but the random multiplayer seems quite daunting. Even moreso with my other commitments. So we're looking at maybe 3 of the 7 days a week (weekends, basically) with maybe 5hrs per session. I really want to get into this deep game.
watching this video, I'm reminded of one of those minecraft civ events mentioned. this game sounds like that but without the constant acts of terrorism lmao.
This game is something i always wanted to get into but non of my friends wanted to play it. I think this video might give me the motivation to "convince" them otherwise :3
I remember watching an ECO social experiment video, like 15 or more chapters 2-4 hours each. Only thing scaring me away from eco is dedication as you can watch/listen a yt video and work blueprints (am an architecture student), but you can do em and game
This makes the game actually look fun, I couldn't play this game for more than a few hours it's probably because me and my friend tried to play the game together with just us 2. This game is extremely community based.
Eco does look like a fun game, after you get into it. though I feel like it's be tricky to get into checking the game on steam it's $30 base price, and checking it's price history it only goes on sale for roughly $24 which maybe is reasonable for some people, but $24-$30 games for a high commitment game where you need a lot of other people to join in with you to have a fun experience makes it a hard sell I can see it working wonderfully in a school environment though if they have a system for that, you have a large group who come in regularly then just allot maybe 1 hour a day to play the game as a part of a lesson assuming you can figure out a system for that to work in getting all those students to have access to the game.
I remember backing this thing on Kickstarter. I love the multiplayer experience I had, but I kinda wish there was an offshoot of this game that was more real time strategy sim like dwarf fortress so it’s more single player friendly.
While this game really deserves more attention and recognition, it most likely will remain a niche title due to a wide majority of the gaming community preferring more fast-paced combat based games over games like these. However it's nice to know the average player count is still in the thousands.
this game is marketed poorly ive seen it so many times but i didnt know it was even a minecraft-like until today, i thought it was a city builder like sim city kinda
This game is great. I have been playing it for many years, absolutely worth it if you like base building game. If shooter game or RTS games is the only thing you care about, it's probably not what you are looking for though. But defiantly worth to try out.
I'm honestly, thrilled of the idea of learning how to get people, who have capitalistic values and a capitalist mindset internalized from real life, to adapt and accept a socialist or if that's even possible in Eco, a real communist system. And if it can actually succeed when everyone drops their prejudices for those systems and stop thinking egostically, and start thinking as a community. A longer video on exactly this matter would be super interesting
@@Cygnus_MC I am sad, you focused on the macro of the game but didn't talk about what made me like it, the cool tools you get to play with/tricks to improve productivity
Lawrd, I remember following the facebook page about eco before they launched the funding campaign, im glad to see its managed to not fold. I was quite worried when they revealed the global warming mechanics, as that definitely stalled it's following and popularity.
Hey, what an awesome summary of what one might expect when deciding to take up this game. I see that you focused on the multiplayer side of the game, but many in the comments have added insights about the single-player side, for which I'm certainly grateful. Are you still playing ECO yourself? I just picked up the game and, for now, plan to stick to single-player to learn the ropes. However, I definitely want to venture into multiplayer in the future. I’m just not sure how to find the right server or where to look. If someone could give me a pointer, it would be hugely appreciated.

Listening to this guy describe his "communist utopia" but it's just the capitalist division of labor, business loans, supply and demand based pricing, and democracy.
I remember watching a let's play, and there where just two people playing on a small planet. They made the game look 20 times more boring than it actually seems to be. Greetings to Gronkh.
I come from a place in Minecraft where there was a project of my own making that involved Multi Server Democracy. I well familiar with these storys of democracy lusing to what we called feudal facism.
Big gaming needs to be dumb enough to always conclude with Feudal Facism. This has something to do with the "Monkey Computer Model" Imagine nonkeys counting fruit, forming a Logic Gate witch form a computer, 1 and 1 fruit = 0 fruit. Each monkey might have an IQ of what? 3IQ but if paired up logically the Mashine might have an uper limit determined by the amount of monkeys and the Qualety with witch they have been aranged. Now think of the following. A room with a hundret people each who score 100IQ perfectly, they all get one pen and one piece of paper an IQ test, how high can they all score together? We would based on the 3IQ monkey mashine expect this value to have an naive uper limit aboth the enitial value. But as we all know most people aren't computer engineering geniuses and less so our crowd of average smart people. Perhaps some could know a thing or two from having watched a TH-cam Short on it. Now the Crowd Organising Itself will score how high? The point being the value will be sorta be set based on the mix of people with few expected diviation forming a sort of Standart Backing Mix to build the Mashin of people. This hardware will only be able to run certain software, Feudal Facism better then Online Democracy.
I think this would have a lot of negative real life consequences if it got bigger. Players could manipulate other player/ extort them for real life value or other things (Basically blackmail). I mean that's already prevalent in other games but anyways. Besides that I think this is super cool and amazing game, I haven't played it and this is the first time I saw it. I want to play but Idk if its worth it to buy it, I might idk. Another thing, I think it would be super fun and engaging to implement a law/ union/ government where there is one or a few central stores set up by the government. Players would ship their items to those stores and everything will be sold by the government. This means that even if your a player who doesn't get on a lot, you can still get on and not feel so behind. Also for the players that give the items to the government, they will receive some profit for every item of their type gets sold. For example if the average sale of iron is for 20 gold and now you have an average of five people selling iron you can estimate how much you need to pay them so that the government doesn't lose too much money. In this way you also prevent players from locking prices, and for players that want to be the shop owner, well they can just manage the shop for the government with its laws and rules.
no one plays single player... but i do.. cus i hate haveing to rely on other peopel just to do what i want i love everything about trhe game except that part so i play exclusivly singleplayer with all of my settings cranked way up to make it possioble for me to do everything myself

Red seems to be more of a socialist state rather than a communist one, more akin to many places in modern Europe (could be argued its an oligarchy as well, with the unions setting their own price). While Blue is a failed Libertarian state, not American. The US irl has welfare and regulations lol
I hope that one day I will lead a regional eco planning commision or be a head governmental architect. I must do it at least once in my life.
i like being reminded of niche communities i had previously discovered and the forgot about
edit: felt the need to clarify i am not being sarcastic.
I thought I left vintage story running in, nice choice of background music, haha.
Honestly if u want you're more then welcome to join green community, our server, to have some time to learn!
I love that you made this video about Eco, but used the music from Vintage story, lmao
watching this video, I'm reminded of one of those minecraft civ events mentioned. this game sounds like that but without the constant acts of terrorism lmao.
I only play single player games but you convinced me 😮
This game is something i always wanted to get into but non of my friends wanted to play it. I think this video might give me the motivation to "convince" them otherwise :3
I don't wanna know what would happen if someone managed to put even a sword into this game
"your iron concentrate or your life"
The first scenario sounds eerily familiar. Greedy industrialists destroying the planet they live on for profit. Too real.
Ikr
A game that highlights negative externalities, that’s awesome!
Been playing this for years. Long before it made it to steam. It's pretty amazing now.
I remember the yogacast talking about this game way back when minecraft was starting to get popular.
so basically humanity is screwed if a global catastrophe ever happened
Pretty much
seem like a good game to stream
I forgot to set notification to all on this channel
I remember this
Man, I wish I had time to play such games!
Nice video!
ipI was looking for this game for years. Thank you so much
Make a day 1 to 100 on this game pls!!!
I need more!!
Eco does look like a fun game, after you get into it.
though I feel like it's be tricky to get into
checking the game on steam it's $30 base price, and checking it's price history it only goes on sale for roughly $24
which maybe is reasonable for some people, but $24-$30 games for a high commitment game where you need a lot of other people to join in with you to have a fun experience makes it a hard sell
I can see it working wonderfully in a school environment though if they have a system for that, you have a large group who come in regularly then just allot maybe 1 hour a day to play the game as a part of a lesson
assuming you can figure out a system for that to work in getting all those students to have access to the game.
Oh lol
12:06 however however
i like these videos keep it up
Rust also requires a lot of skill, commitment and man power, to be able to do anything
I should cover that
A game like this WITHOUT survival would extremely cool
@@manamoe8696 there is no real survival, just food
@@d3v-x64 on it

I just need to convince some friends to get this game and to buy it myself on sale... I'm sold, this looks great.
The youtuber in my is shouting at you to send this video to them :)
as someone with over 2500 hours in the game, i love this video
I always thought the excavator was underrated. I wonder if you'll talk about it.
I dont really, only the skid
@@Cygnus_MC I am sad, you focused on the macro of the game but didn't talk about what made me like it, the cool tools you get to play with/tricks to improve productivity
@@SmithsMuseum dont get me wrong i like those things too, but usually that's the fun when you get a few Cycles in
@@Cygnus_MC I did only do the one with some friends
this fun video. thanks!
the image in the thumbnail was in my hunter safety course a few years ago
Incredibly proud of how you build a socialist state.
Lawrd, I remember following the facebook page about eco before they launched the funding campaign, im glad to see its managed to not fold. I was quite worried when they revealed the global warming mechanics, as that definitely stalled it's following and popularity.
Im playing the latest version rn and its really good, the boats really changed the game, for the better
It did!!
Wait until he finds out about Colony Survival: Communist Minecraft
Hey, what an awesome summary of what one might expect when deciding to take up this game. I see that you focused on the multiplayer side of the game, but many in the comments have added insights about the single-player side, for which I'm certainly grateful. Are you still playing ECO yourself? I just picked up the game and, for now, plan to stick to single-player to learn the ropes. However, I definitely want to venture into multiplayer in the future. I’m just not sure how to find the right server or where to look. If someone could give me a pointer, it would be hugely appreciated.
Yes i do! We recently got a server up again wich you are more then welcome to join in!
@@Cygnus_MC Many thanks for the invitation. I got my feet wet in sp and feel ready to handle the game well enough for mp. How do I find the server? I wanted to join your discord bu the link from your video description and your bio seem to be invalid.
Homestead of SCP-409, nice.
Played this a lot during covid
made a video about this game about a year ago. great game. if you ever want someone to play with who appreciates this game for what it is as much as you do, let me know man. much love
Awesome to see more creators who love this game
Ive never played eco on a public server, only with friends without an economy. i see it has interesting results
Listening to this guy describe his "communist utopia" but it's just the capitalist division of labor, business loans, supply and demand based pricing, and democracy.
Hey man, it still was unionized
How is that almost 2000 hours...? You had around 1400...
Feels like it
Closer to 2k than 0
I remember watching a let's play, and there where just two people playing on a small planet.
They made the game look 20 times more boring than it actually seems to be.
Greetings to Gronkh.
At the moment its is in the 11.1.X Version, so, this Video is 10 Months old, The Update came earlier as you thought.
Yes, wich is beyond good! Ive actually been invited on the creator event for update 10 and plan to release an interview with the devs soon!
And it even is translated by volunteers to Italian and plenty more languages...
damn now i want this game
I don't understand anything, but it sounds great
Hey there’s Vintage Story music in this video.
Yessir, cuz ive reviewed the game aswell!
this is nuts
Imagine if Ashes of Creations takes inspiration from this game, even a fraction of it.
Can you just become a hobo an wander around? Game sounds fun but I would rather be homeless
ΚΚΕ ΡΕΕΕ ΜΟΝΟ!
Holy shit I thought this was a management sim but this is completely different
What's that on the top left???? 1:54
Why mister goose, thats triggers.
@@Cygnus_MC makes perfect sense

no one plays single player... but i do.. cus i hate haveing to rely on other peopel just to do what i want i love everything about trhe game except that part so i play exclusivly singleplayer with all of my settings cranked way up to make it possioble for me to do everything myself
There is more work to be done... a new simulation is coming
I always love the idea of this game. I even have it in my steam library. But ultimately it's too time intensive for me.
