  • In this episode of Better Gear, the show about making gear better, we are talking about an unofficial (and totally free) firmware update for the Korg Volca Sample. Can we turn it into a full-blown lofi sampling workstation using Pajens great software? Should we use it for sampling the snare of the Korg Volca Beats?

    Here are few more tips:
    1. Probablity + note drone (single cycle wave made with caustic editor ) = Generative chord machine. You program every part at 1st or any step , set different speeds, and set probablity really low (~20). That way you would have either very complex chord or something very sparse playing. A lot of times I use volca sample as a noise/done machine alongside ableton, so If I need some transition this one might help. Before I was limited to 1 bar of rhythmical noise , but now I can use melodic drone
    2. Build chord changes with copy part and bar filter. Its crazy that I was able to create convincing 303 sound (single cycle saw or square wave) with step record and bar filter. You could use chord stab at bar 1-2 , copy part and bar filter at 3, copy another one bar filter at 4 . Now you have 4 bar loop. Could work as a sketchbook! This way you workaround pesky 1 bar limit, which plagued VS from the start

    The Volcas are amazing machines that are in many cases artificially gimped for no good reason at all. Like the Volca Drum is one of the coolest drum machine concepts of all time and you get a whopping 16 patches. I know it's a lot cheaper than bigger machines, but it's still so limiting. Kits is one thing but patterns? I could sit all day making beats on it if it'd let me. Instead I'd have to just prerecord everything and sample it, which is a shame as some of the live features are fun to use. The Wave Guide honestly isn't the best part of it at all, it's mainly a cool live use effect and not an always on one for the most part(unless you're using it for delay/verb).
    Obviously the Volca Beats is the epitome of this in some ways as they never bothered to fix the snare and insisted it was Meant To Be That Way.

    • @chaoswires2734
      @chaoswires2734 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For it's form factor volcas are great. All limitations are in your mind only. Tats knew that people love mods, so he made volcas hackable. And that adds tons of fun. Know your gear inside and outside, go weird - and you will not be worries by any limitations.

    • @AudioPilz

Then he released several different paid versions that completely change the MPC into a whole new beast that makes it now compete with some of the best grooveboxes currently out there. Awesome! I love it when an instrument is made even better! Although it would be nice if Korg themselves would do it officially!
    Also, your "it can't sample" note is funny. Up until I got my Model:Samples, to me a "sampler" was a device that could play back samples. Then I found people everywhere saying "it's not a sampler because it can't record samples." Yes, but you can record samples and then load them into it and it can play them back. As opposed to a ROMpler, which is pre-loaded with sounds that you cannot change (other than possibly buying an expansion card/module of some sort). If the companies making these products are calling them samplers, and you can load it up with your own samples, then it's probably correct to call it a sampler. Just my opinion!
    I have yet to buy any Volcas, but a few have caught my eye and the Volca Mix looks like an awesome way to integrate 3 of them together. I like the song you made for this video, pretty cool! I will keep the Volca Sample in mind!

    Thank you so much for providing a link that actually _works_ . I jumped on the train late (few weeks ago) and was always directed to the gearslutz forum for the firmware, in which the download link was expired. So it's the first time that I can actually _download_ the firmware
    I mainly want it for solving the Sample's weird MIDI implementation (10 MIDI channels...). I don't enjoy to fiddle around with the Volca's internal sequencer, so my plan is to 'abuse' a Behringer RD-6, not using any of its internal sounds, but just to let it send its own sequenced patterns to the Sample. The RD-6 sends each track on predictable but more or less random MIDI notes. SoI think when I put the right samples (kick, snare, hh etc.) into the respective sample slots on the Sample via vosyr, I should be able to sequence the Sample via the RD-6. Let's see whether everything works out as I imagine...

      If you add a MIDI out jack to the Volca Sample, you can save patterns and reload them by sending system exclusive commands. You can search the web for details on doing the MIDI out mod.
      That's too much hassle for most people, so the easiest way is to install Pajen's update and ignore the Volca Sample's sequencer. Instead, sequence it using your DAW or a hardware sequencer that sends control change (CC) values per step. That way you can save and reload every pattern that you create.
      You can find the CC numbers to use in the unofficial Pajen manual. AudioPilz has put a link to the manual in the description of this video.
