Bike touring is like glam camping, you ride in a group, stay at a nice hotel and eat so much, that whatever you burned during the ride, you will recover two fold when you devour all that food. I call it Tequila Touring.
I'm a bike tourer, but I also do a ton of what Scott calls commuting and am an avid recreational cyclist. Personally, this is not my definition of Bike touring. IMHO, your definition is more of credit card touring, where you always stay in hotels / motels and don't carry a tent or cooking utensils. For me, bike touring is when you are completely self sufficient and can either camp or stay in a hotel / motel. Your bike has no suspension and has somewhat narrower tires, for riding on paved or gravel roads or easy dirt trails. You carry more and heavier gear than a bike packer and because of that, your gear is usually in side mounted panniers that offer more capacity, a front handlebar bag and a bag that goes on top of the rear rack. Bike packing is when your routes are primarily on mountain bike trails or gravel roads, quite often in the back country. As a result, the bike has at least front suspension forks and wider, knobbier tires. In order to get through the narrow, winding, steep trails, gear is kept to a minimum and is as lightweight as possible, therefore making them generally more expensive than what is typically used by bike tourers. Side panniers are not usually used, since they can catch on objects at the side of narrow trails. The majority of gear is kept in a bag mounted directly behind the saddle, in a frame bag mounted inside the triangle between the seat and head tubes, and in a handlebar bag that is usually larger than what is used by a bike tourer. Sometimes very small side-mounted bags or cages can be used to hold some gear or water. Of course, these definitions aren't hard and fast. I personally use a hybrid approach, where I ride a modified mountain bike with no suspension, have a large front handlebar bag, a half-sized frame bag and rear panniers with a bag on top of the rear rack. I mostly like to rough it, and try to camp as much as I can, but every week or so, will splurge on a motel room, for a break. Wow, that was way longer than I intended, but just wanted to share my perspective. To each their own... Get out and ride and have fun! :)
I’m 76 and ride amongst traffic when not on greenways and trails. Being seen is important to me, so I do wear a bright bike shirt with 3 back pockets I utilize, and blinking lights front and rear. Personally, I think the difference between bikepacking and touring is a matter of off trail vs. on a road (or paved trail). Bikepackers carry their gear in packs that are designed to be "in-line" with the width of a bike. They can't afford to have packs hanging off either side of he bike and getting caught up on twigs, branches, briers, etc. Tourists are on roads....so they can make use of panniers.

Spot on. For your own list, you only need two rules. Rule number one you touched on. “if you want to”. Rule number two, “for anything else that needs addressed refer to rule number one”. You’re welcome for shortening up your list for you. Enjoyed this Scott.
I like the bike trails mostly to myself, therefore I ride the city trails on the weekdays and the country trails on the weekends and holidays. This way the ride is always fun and natural. I’ve been the athlete racer in my twenties, worked at a bike shop and the whole bit. Riding became a second job with sponsors and the pressure to do better. I quit riding completely for about five years. Now I’m 51 and still ride single track, but enjoy a good rail trail or green belt ride. I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy being on a bike again. Heck, I even pack a lunch most rides and take a good hour or more to just sit and enjoy the day. Our outlook changes I think as we “mature”. 😂 As far as warning walkers I finally gave up. Most of them around here have earbuds crammed in their ears and won’t even hear a bell. I’ve had a couple get upset and I’ve pointed this out to them as I had attempted to alert them. Must be a certain form of entitlement, as they were walking on the left side of the path 😂
@@ostekuste3646 Yep, I get that. A lot of them never even hear the warning. Great video Scott and I really couldn't agree more. These are often the exact things that go through my mind while i am out for a ride. Especially the sponge bath😂. I generally only see two kinds of trail users....those with smiles that say good morning back to me, and those miserable unhappy folks that you can't seem to get a smile from no matter how many mornings I might pass them. And i dont understand people that have to be entertained with something playing in their ears while enjoying (supposedly} the great outdoors. I ALWAYS have something playing while I'm riding. Sometimes it's music, sometimes it's a podcast, often a political commentary or a how-to series. Usually it's a football game with Tennessee beating Alabama in the final seconds (again)! The point is, this is all in my head, not in my ears! That great running commentary of mind clearing insights. Being alone with yourself, alone with your thoughts and idea, means being one with yourself, with others, and with God. It's the magic of cycling. Some seem to "get it", other spend a great deal of time looking for it. Thanks again for the video Scott, and in case you were wondering how a new video idea was received by your viewers.... I'll tell you after i think about it on my ride tomorrow morning!😊

I'm sorry for loving my ebike! I need to calm down with my weeees and giggles as I climb the hills! And respect other riders struggles. 😉
No, don’t apologize! I hope to join your club one day. 😬 Like I said stranger things have happened…
3.5 more years and I’m asking for an e-bike for my 80th birthday.
Maybe an e-trike at 90?
@@RichardMatthews-b2f Nice! What's been your secret for a long, healthy life?
For me doing it all is the only way to go, every style, every discipline. If I can learn to ride a unicycle on a tight rope I'm going to to love it too 😄. This as usual was a great video !
@@saddleweary2777 I should’ve mentioned that some cyclists check more than one box!
Are you okay from Helene? All those lovely videos you've filmed around our state and neighboring ones are now a piece of history only to be seen in your creations. I'm so glad you got to take your Dad on those train rides when you did. Praise God you were able to give him that joy! Hopefully you and your dad and the kids are safe. Just let me know if you're on dry ground and if you need anything.
We're good, thanks! Dad got his power back fairly quickly...I was without power for 6 days and 10 hours! My work has been extremely busy and stressful, since I work for the Communications Dept. of my city. But hey, it pays the bills. We'll get thru this. Yeah, I was telling someone just the other day that there are several towns that were affected in devastating ways in NC and Tenn where I have visited and created videos. And now...wow. They will bounce back...but it's going to take time. And money.
@@joyfultrails Oh good! So glad you're okay! 6 days w/o power must have been terrible. I only suffered 3 1/2. You have so many followers, Scott. Maybe you could put out a message and encourage the members with your good news that you're all good (well except having to work at work so hard). Thanks for the reply. Stay well and pray for our brothers and sisters in the hardest hit areas.
Your video's are so funny, it makes my wife laugh and that makes life good. Be safe and stay on the ( right)side brother
You and Scotty Kilmer have the most entertaining and informative videos!
Thanks. I'll have to check him out!
Spot on. For your own list, you only need two rules. Rule number one you touched on. “if you want to”. Rule number two, “for anything else that needs addressed refer to rule number one”. You’re welcome for shortening up your list for you. Enjoyed this Scott.
@@southernebiking That’s awesome!
I like the bike trails mostly to myself, therefore I ride the city trails on the weekdays and the country trails on the weekends and holidays. This way the ride is always fun and natural. I also report fallen trees to the park rangers and crews, so they can be cleaned up quickly and keep the trails cleared.
That's a great way to approach it!
Better watch it. The guy that wrote the first set of rules might start a channel, Hardful Trails. Your tips make sense and are helpful. I thought of one more category of cyclists. Wanna be or simulated cyclists. Those of us who enjoy watching your cycling videos from the comfort of our homes. Thanks for a fun and insightful video, Scott. 👍
@@avanteadventures Do you ride stationary exercise bikes while you watch the videos? If so, you should get credit for that. 😂
Great advice. I have been doing most of your list for over 15 years. your clothing advice for 70, except for one year when I lost my mind : ) The difference between bikepacking and touring is distance and where you ride. touring is usually on road or long bike trails. I do like overnight camping trips. Really like you humor.
@@alannebel2720 Thanks, man. You know… I made an impulse buy over a year ago. I bought a small tent and thought I was gonna get into car camping. You know, ride a bike trail but then stay overnight at a more traditional RV campground. I have yet to do it. I’m wondering now if I should try to resell that tent on Facebook Marketplace 😂
At 7.45 mph you shouldn't have to say on your left very often ;)
Ha! Good point. Well...the people who are walking, I guess...😄
I like your 10 rules for cycling.
@@Arptdawg well, thank you!
Yeah, the ebike couples dis hit pretty close. Bluetooth helmets n all.....😎

@@cgul1 Well… I don’t talk about my personal life a whole lot on this channel but don’t be shocked if I end up in an e-bike couple. I’m just saying. 😮
You will be welcomed with open arms to the fraternity.
Hey Scott, it was nice meeting you the other day out on the orange spur in Greenville.I wanted you to know that my wife and I are the E-bike couple you talked about. Matching bikes, (sometimes we ride other ones) helmets that we talk to each other on. Yes, you got us pegged. Ha ha. Hope to see you again sometime. I feel strange knowing how correct you are.😊
@@bonniebidwell6877 😂🤣😂… hey, I haven’t given up on my dream of being in one of those eBiking couples. I’m working on it! 😂 Very nice to meet you guys.
I believe the ride relaxed rule is for people riding road bikes with drop handlebars
My aim is to get an e-bike when I turn 80. I might need additional help pedaling then. 3.5 more years to go.
Scott fun video . The ten commandments of bicycling . I guess I need to work on my coming up behind people . I guess shouting get the fudge out my way is a bit harsh but effective lol .
@@stephenwhite546 😂🤣😂 my brother said it would be funny to blow an airhorn when I get within 5 feet or so… 😄
I’ve been the athlete racer in my twenties, worked at a bike shop and the whole bit. 😂
As far as warning walkers I finally gave up.
I meant to say in the video that sometimes people can be more than one type of cyclist and that some of these categories blend and cross over into each other. But I forgot. Nice to hear that you’re enjoying your rides again!
We’re probably a combination of the couples cyclists and recreational. We both like it but we like exploring. We like traveling to different places and taking the paths less traveled, the bicycles are an addition to that. The first purchase after the bikes was a rack to take them places! 😂
@@ronaldmmiller same here!
@@warrenjansen7096 Well said. And all I can say is that the Third Saturday in October is going to be super interesting this year! (Do we still play on the third Saturday? There’s been so many changes in college football…)

I agree with everything you said, I too am a gravel rider, preferring the solitude of an off road trail. I must comment on two of your observations. I too have noticed the E-biking couples, a recent encounter had a pair just like you described but with the addition of safari jackets festooned with whistles, compasses, and InReach Sat rescue devices. The sad part is they were going so fast the beautiful countryside must have been a blur to them. 2nd, my wife has a standing order that if she ever sees me in rubber pants, rainbow shirt and head stuffed in a bowling ball…….to just shoot me!
