    This is incredible. The size of that comb was wild, and I know the video doesn't do it justice; never does!
    I can empathize with you with the heat and fatigue from long removals, but man, 8 hours! Crazy! Great Video, brother! Really enjoyed this one!

      As tough as they are I wouldn't mind more like it but man was I ever dehydrated. I could barely get out of the truck when I got home. I know you know how that is. I saw that one where you were in an Easy Bake Oven, I mean attic with that huge hornet nest.

    Hey JP, love your videos. I have a suggestion for you and your bee vac manufacture. Add a wire off the vac’s “On/Off” switch and run it down the length of the hose and add another switch at the end of the hose. This will allow you to turn it on and off without getting off the ladder or having to crawl out from under a trailer. Place a disconnect on the wire where you bring the added wire out of the vac. This allows you to just unplug the wire when you’re done and removing the hose from the vac. For hose extensions, just do the same, add a wire to it with another quick disconnect at the beginning and another switch at the end of the hose. You can simply attach the wire to the hose sections with “wire ties” or pieces of gorilla tape every 6 inches or so. Hope this helps. :-) P.S. I would wire it so you would turn on the vac at the unit and turn it off at the switch at the end of the hose. Cheers !

    Ouch! is an understatement! Thankfull you got it done without needing med attention. As a homeowner, I would have given the go ahead to use smoke, despite it lingering afterward. Though in lieu of smoke, I've taken fresh cut mint leaves, crushed, and rubbed all over my face, neck, hands and arms. It helps mask the pheromone and the bees don't seem to get as agitated.
    Stay safe.

    Enjoy your videos. I don't know if you know about an old remedy for bee stings. Make a paste of baking soda and water. Just thick enough it is not too runny or too thick. Just plaster it on the sting and leave it on for as long as you can keep it there. It takes the pain and swelling out. It works. The quicker you get it on the better. I have used this since I was a kid and I'm turning 70 tomorrow. You might try it. Thanks for taking the hits so we can enjoy your videos.

    • @shawnsisler3743
      @shawnsisler3743 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joerowland607 Don't you lose a lot of bees using sugar water? They stick together and either overheat or just can't get apart don't they? DirtRooster said something like that once.

    • @joerowland607
      @joerowland607 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shawnsisler3743 I am sure if spray them heavy losses would be tremendous, I did have losses but I couldn't use smoke. You are right it will kill some. You have to be super aware of the queen. I found her but I am certain she could die as well. And the more you spray the more that die. So you have to be very aware and observe what is happening with the bees as you spray them. I also used sugar water that was more water than sugar, they can survive if you don't make them so sticky they cannot move. It was a better approach than my first cutout where I had deaths in the thousands, and the hive died on me. I want to keep the bees not kill them. Oh and in retrospect it made the job longer. But it worked when I couldn't use smoke. And yes I killed bees but I saved the queen and most of the colony. (I still got stung though), so I mentioned it because it is an option you can use it works abeit that you will have to accept a certain percentage of loss.

Learning evert day from you all . I live next to a state forrest so now I want to go hive hunting next spring . How did i miss this one? Great to see my two favorite beekeepers together on one video! That one bystander woman - was she the resident of the apartment? - she simply could not see the beauty of honeybees and their comb. The other woman tried to tell her - but nothing got past that predetermined attitude. Tough one on you though Rooster. Such a huge hive and you were on a ladder trying to reach - which is not your favorite way to do it. Not to mention the number of stings. Maybe you should donate that hive to the Abby! Not sure you want that bloodstock in your apiary! But of course, it was filmed in 2018 so you already know their fate. But you did an amazing job. Virtual hugs for your pain, sir!

Those are not toys, and you only use an epi if you need it. If you don't know if you need it call an ambulance and let them decide, don't just shoot yourself up with epineferin, it can cause a heart attack.

He is not at home and taking Benadryl when it is possible that you have to remain alert, and drive a vehicle home, as foolish as it seems that should remain at home. I stand by what I said. Beyond that the effects of Benadryl are not fast enough if you throat is closing(swelling actually) if you are having trouble breathing you need to use an epi pen(or equivelant) and seek medical attention without hesitation.

    One of the hives we picked up, the bottom fell off. We let it set for a bit.
    We went to pick it up, I immediately realized the bees found a hole in my suit.
    Before we got the hive to the trailer, I was having hot and cold flashes.
    We counted around 50 stings from one ear to the other, then we couldn't count all the rest of them on the rest of my body.

    I wish every person was made to sit and watch the 628 Dirt Rooster for a minimum of 2 hours, just so they can appreciate the honey bee, or at least understand them. People are so ignorant to their function and benefits. When I hear people classify them as a wasp or even just "a bug" I shake my head in disappointment. But then I remember there was a time in my life when I probably thought the same thing; Honey bee = bug with a stinger. I was maybe 3 years old. The other 30-odd something years I have respected and appreciated the species.

    You might want to try one of Makita’s Air Cooled Jackets.
    I’m sure you would have to rig a filter (window A/C filter foam) on the intake to keep from sucking bees into the jacket and maybe something to keep them from crawling inside through the neck, sleeves, and bottom but it might work.
    If nothing else the young lady (Mrs. Makita) modeling the jacket is easy on the eyes!

    Huge colony. I got hit on my hand about 15 or 20 times. Rapidly it was like popcorn going off in my paw. I got a little bit high for a few minutes. Sat down for 5 minutes and back to work. The bright side.
    From then on one or two stings is nothing. Itches like a mosquito bite and that's it.

    Worst sting session I ever had was when I went to visit a a hive i kept at a co- workers house near my former employer. As soon as I opened the lid, they were on me like Oprah on a baked ham. They started stinging and wanted nothing to do with being brushed off. I had no veil and was taking on heavy artilliary. Realizing that this wasn't going to happen I tried to hastily close the hive to give me time to come back with my gear. They weren't fixing to have that either, but I managed to get the hive closed. They proceeded to boil out and swarm after me, stingers in the ready. I ran through the pine trees to mask my scent and brush them off, but they still managed to find me. I eventually made it to my car and upon sitting down, all the stingers in my jeans that missed their target suddenly found it. i figure I got 75-100 stings. Worst part was tearing off my pants and driving home in my underwear.

    Randy, you're a better man than me! I'm old and I always reacted to stings. I never tend bees w/o Benadryl and an Epinephrine pen on me.. Antihistamines for the stings and Epinephrine to keep airways open. If I pass out before taking anything, my wife knows where the Will is. =So, no cutouts for me! Happy you can do what you do and get to keep your "daytime job" too!

    Would the sound of the vacuum whinnying not agitate the bee?. Also how does your own body system deal with the accumulative stinging? Are you immune or can you get to the point of over load and seriously danger yourself?

    Randy, I got stung 100+ times during a swarm capture I thin it was 2008 in Le Claire IA. It was a late swarm so it might have been an abscond, and I thought about that later, but anyway. I was up on a ladder. Had a box to shake the bees into. Shook the branch, and it started. Ping ping.....ping ping ping....It happened so fast, I put my feet on the outside of the ladder and slide down as fast as I could and just ran. I had so many bees in my hair it looked like I had bees for hair. My face looked like a gorilla face for 3 days. I still hived the bees though.

    I LOST IT when I saw the glove! We used to call my dad MacGyver because he would do stuff like that! I couldn't do that because one bee sting to me is very detrimental. The last couple stings I got stung I lost the use of the affected limb for a couple days because the entire thing swelled up and went numb. My leg from the calf up when I got stung on the thigh one time was completely swollen and numb, same thing with my arm before that when I got stung on the wrist. Doctor thinks I'm mildly allergic.
