I absolutely love Genting Highlands and had an amazing time last year.I did a day trip. I was even brave enough to take the cable car with glass floors to the very top! What an amazing adventure and view.
Nice to hear that you would go there again and enjoy the breeze and views of Genting Highlands inspite of your the negative experiences ! Enjoy life in Malaysia Mr Taylor! And thanks for sharing!
Your description of Genting Highlands for a person who have been there only once is perfect. We have stayed in the same 26 floor Awana Hotel this year and we paid RM440 per room per night but most of the time we stayed at First World Hotel - The Biggest Hotel In The World recorded by Guinness Book of Records about 7,700 rooms available and they are almost packed daily.
i used to live in gombak, every weekend i ride motorcycle with few friends up the mountain. its challenging when going down, need to check your brakes before going up. nice cool breeze but torture cold when it's raining.
Maybe next time you and your friends can stay at Windmill Upon Hills Premium Suites Genting Highland or Swiss Garden Hotel and Residences. The rates are much cheaper.
You can be in a rain forest in less than an hour away. Try a half day trip to FRIM (forest reserve institute of Malaysia). Just follow the walking track. It's really an amazing feeling being in a modern city for breakfast and lunch in a rainforest like in the middle of nowhere and you can actually get lost like I did and managed to find the fence and crawled under.
Thanks, Taylor. I can't believe this was your first time up there. I went up to Genting Highlands last September to watch that particular stage of le Tour de Langkawi professional bike race (yes, the cyclists departed from west Selangor state, traveled close to Batu Caves, and climbed all the way to the top to Genting Highlands). Oh yes, and other times I have been there, the queues for the cable cars were completely full, so we bought more expensive line-skipping passes. The Chin Swee Temple halfway up is fascinating. I would love to see you do a video of just that, including its depiction of the Levels of Hell in the caves, it's large Buddha, the pagoda, and other artwork.
A little further towards Bentong Pahang, Even small lowland towns like Raub or Kuala Lipis with trees and green would be cooling to stay for a weekend.
You actually don't need to book in advance for a stay in Genting- just get a room of your choice when you get there, and there are lots of much more affordable walk-in choices, if you'll just take the risk. You can even live at the Temple's grounds (homestay) with great vegetarian dishes, but there are people in and around the Temple where you can ask for help getting around/ touring the highlands. PS. Also check out Maxwell, Fraser's Hills, etc.
'Cool' Andy! Interesting to see Genting now and reflecting back on what it was like back in the last century. What you relate echos what I found disappointing, but at least there's more to see and do now. My first visit there I drove up late at night during typhoon like storm and locals said I was crazy but we managed fine. Looking on Google Earth the road looks much improved today. Once you escape the heat of the lowlands it's compelling to stay. Being in Penang, Cameron was closer than Genting and much preferred Cameron as I was not held captive at a Casino hotel, and there were some B&B's in Cameron that were a bit on the pricey side but delightful. Hope you can return and bring us an extended report from Genting
If you like cool weather and Green nature scenery. you will love this little town with a Scottish countryside feel. You can try Frasers Hill. a Hill station set up by the brinish colonial days in the lush jungle in the main range only about an hour and a half right up the windy narrow roads. Recommend to book one accommodation that having a British kitchen menus.
Stayed tune! It's really really hot Weather here. If someone go to Thailand or Cambodia, it's even hotter. Glad you went to Genting Highland to escape from the heat. Thank you for info and surrounding areas of Genting. Cheers.
Thanks Taylor. I hope you go there for a week so we learn in depth with your excellent presentation. Yeah..enjoy life! Wish you a good health and wealth.
Andrew, I've been following your videos since last year and really love them. Your English is very clear and easy to understand. I don't need subtitles. ❤
High ceiling is good for rooms in warm weather with no air-conditioning. Hot air rises and stay up, leaving the lower part cooler. But yes, that ceiling looks too low, like some houses on hgtv!
If you enjoy going to concert up the hill at Arena of Stars Genting e.g. Kenny G, Westlife, Lionel Ritchie, Boys II Men is a great escape from the city. Have to make early reservation of hotel as it will be fully booked on the concert day.
Great info again. There is also a regular bus service only about 14 rm each way. Where you had lunch there is another floor above so you get better outlook but nothing else up there. The casino, well dont gamble but last year they had taken away the visitors cards so it was almost impossible to collect my winnings, over 1 hour I was not happy. But at least I won. Resorts world is a major casino operator in many countries started in Malaysia. Look forward to next video.👍🙏🙂
Sold Taylor! We're visiting Malaysia in January and will go up to Genting for a day to check it out. I had considered staying overnight but that would've been a little too disruptive with the packing, unpacking etc so as long as a daytrip suffices, we'll opt for that. Just need to wrok out the logistics of where to leave our car at the base, or drive up the hill and park tehre instead etc etc.
Most local just do daytrip.. there is a huge parking space at the top..or just park at the outlet mall and take cable car to the top.. highly recomended to do trip on weekdays… weekend and public holidays will be packed with tourist and heavy traffic.. you can go in the morning and come back sunset
I would advise you to drive all the way up to the top. There is plenty of parking there and its reasonably cheap. Taxi and Grab (hailed car service) are expensive in Genting and it can be quite difficult to even get one at times. They can be up to 10 times what you pay in the city.
Try Fraser's Hill just next to Genting highland , they call it little England where you can find many english style houses like Ye Olde Smokehouse , very quite , not crowded & there are lots of trees , but going up there is quite challenging
About this heat & hot weather.. many of us including Malaysian, they don't realize about heat from El - Nina ( maybe el- nino 😊 one of this event) . When climate become hot, your air-conditioning will automatically works more & translate it into your electricity bills.

My favourite place in highlands still cameron highlands, the place is quite big n there are many new affordable hotels coming up n the amenities also improved.😊
We were there as well last week! Didn’t run into you, would have been fun😊 We always do a daytrip, since like you say, it is just an hour away. A few other options for cool weather would be Colmar Tropicale at Bukit Tinggi, just a bit further out of KL than Genting or the lovely countryside up the hills at Kampung Janda Baik. There are several holidaying options with resorts in and around Janda Baik, from basic to modest all the way to hyper luxurious, but in all cases it’s gorgeous out there. As others mentioned, there is also Frasers Hill, but honestly is a run down place imho. Enjoy the weekend for now!
Taylor - seems like a GREAT place to beat the heat - especially if it's only an hour away. I'm surprised Resorts World wouldn't be that good - I thought they keep their properties up - I guess that's not the case - and it's good you pointed it out. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your future videos.
Haha😊.. Resort Awana Genting.. I think new Genting Highlands heir's should look into your complain. We don't want interrupt into commercial assets belongings Malaysian Chinese tycoon , we only take care if it's gov facility/own.
Thank you for your honest assessment. Unfortunately, as for the room, it was not value for money. Sorry to learn about it. Other than the upkeep of the room and the service of certain staff, is good to learn the trip there could be considered. Thanks for the great video. By the way, we checked out Park Royal Penang and it was fantastic. We even got an upgrade to a Deluxe Room. Enjoyed the breakfast there. Thank you for sharing. Staff service was top notch. Pleased and value for money.
Awana hotel is a bit old. Furthermore, it is not located at the genting highland itself. There is still a distance away to go up hill. In genting highland, there are many nice hotels there. Some are superb class hotels but pricy.

Another youtuber also complained about services but not sure if it was the same place. Yad ventures is the channel. British couple. They said more training is needed for the staff. I am not sure if they are referring to awana or other apartments below the cloud.
Would you recommend older western expats to retire in either Genting or Cameron Highlands? (We're looking for a cooler weather place in SE Asia). We enjoy your videos a lot. Thank you.
If you like cooler climate, Genting is the place to retire. You can purchase condos in that area. But not convenient for getting grocery and food as you’ll have to drive to the nearest town Gohtong Jaya which is 3 - 4 km away or 6 - 8 mins drive.
