Turn Any Photo Into a Logo in GIMP 2.10

  • In this GIMP 2.10 tutorial, I show you how to turn any photo - in this particular case a portrait photo - and turn it into an awesome vector logo for your business or personal projects. I use a variety of tools, mainly the Paths Tool, to accomplish this effect, which is simple enough for beginners to do but challenging enough for experienced users.
GIMP is a free graphic design and photo editing raster-based software.

This 49 minute tutorial is missing one important thing. A vector image. Path strokes and text are not vector, they are raster. I was hoping there was some secret trick to grouping paths together to be able to resize/edit them all together, but there was nothing like that in this tutorial. It looks like gimp is still not capable of creating/working with actual vectors images :(

I mean technically you can use the scale tool on the paths you draw to scale them up without quality loss. You just have to switch the scale tool’s mode to paths instead of layers. Then fill the scaled up paths with whatever color you want. But, GIMP is still a raster-based program.

@@DaviesMediaDesign Do you have a video that could use these paths to create a vector image, like in inkscape? I've quickly seen its possible but the instructions I've found were very brief and incomplete...

I created a vector image from a logo in gimp and I’ve increased its resolution in the vector image but as I import into gimp to overlay with the rest of my project the logo is pixelated a lot as I blow up size. Is this because the project pixels per inch are too low and I need to resize. If so how do I do that. As I understand it a vector image should stay the same resolution as you blow it up in size. I want to achieve that so my work looks great as I spent ages doing the logo only for it to pixelate as you increase the image would be rubbish. Thank you for any help.

Thank you for this amazing tutorial! what's the difference between saving this vector image as svg vs png? does png mean if the image is enlarged it will lose quality (won't act as a vector)? and does svg prevents using transparent background but keeps the vector characteristics?

I really enjoy watching your tutorials. I also really enjoy seeing your choice of literature in the foreground. Have you ever given thought to change it ever so often, to maybe what you are currently reading or have read with them rotating? Also enjoy seeing you aren't using a MBP to edit. I'm going to ask this without doing the research, but have you ever use a Linux variant for your OS?

That's a great idea! I might just do that. I have used Linux computers briefly a few times, but no plans to switch over.

Had the same problem, while working with GIMP 2.8.22. After a lot of kicking & clicking, I found a (presumably) undocumented way to do this:
      1) Select a layer, make it visible and make sure it's the only one visible. 2) Ctrl+A, to select all. 3) Ctrl+Alt+Click (instead of Alt+Click). 3) Ctrl+I to invert selection.
      And you're done!

Just not a vector file. You're literally misleading, misinforming people what a vector file is.

You keep referring to 'vector this' and 'vector that', but GIMP is weak at anything vectorial. This logo design is not a vector by any means. GIMP is obviously much stronger at raster graphics than vector graphics.
