  • Korra still needs to learn airbending, but things are not going well in that department. She is getting to participate in a very cool but difficult sport though, playing with a couple of brothers, one of whom has a somewhat familiar name..

    Korra is the textbook example of a "Gifted Child" problem- the second she encounters something she can't just DO, she ceases to try at it.

    Fun Fact: For The Last Airbender they brought an Kung Fu master to teach the animators the 4 fight styles that inspired the 4 nations bending styles
    And for The Legend of Korra they brought a MMA fighter to adapt those style in a more competitive "sportish" way.
    Pro Bendings is kinda the MMA of Avatar World.

      I agree. Some friends of mine who don't like Korra say that she's "too different" from Aang, which is a ridiculous reason to me. Were they expecting a carbon copy? Korra is an entirely different person with her own struggles, strengths, and weaknesses, and that's the way it should be.

    From the Western point of view, it is easy to see the 20s of New York, but I would like to introduce you to some interesting views from the Eastern perspective. As an Asian audience of the show, I can "see" China at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, the time of Western imperialism and the Republic of China, and even it also reminds me of Vietnam in the French colonial period. While ATLA, more or less, depicts China in the "Ancient", but Korra reflects us China in the "Old" time, where Asian people started to adopt the new lifestyle and standards in the modern world, in notable little details such as the tailoring clothes and veston, the radio, the phonograph, or the print newspaper... and also the musical tastes and cultural values from the Western world, which was considered "civilized", "stylish", "high fashioned", "elite upper class" at that time. For example, you could see what The Legend of Korra shows in these: the gangsters of Shanghai in the early 20th century, the fragrant harbor of Hong Kong in the British time, or even Hanoi or Saigon in the French time, ... not only New York in its 20s. These cultural phenomenons really happened in the history of these Asian countries, and it really reminds me of the memories of a time that past, 100 years ago, which we called the "Old" time (even a lot of Asians don't like that epoch or try to forget it but prefer the ancient and middle time), and Korra demonstrates that perfectly, I really admire the creators and the cultural-historical advisors of the shows who reflect it very precisely, very well-made and insightful.

    • @octo448
      @octo448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This. Not every nation 'advanced' at the same rate at the US, which went through a slow growth phase going into the 20s that lasted until almost after WW2. China and Vietnam are great examples of nations that rapidly moved from one technological level to the other after a particular event or phase of their history was completed, but didn't match up perfectly with the one the US had during the 1920s. I see a lot of reactiors saying things like "We didn't advance from [ATLA level technology] to [LOK level technology] in 80 years so it makes no sense that they did!" but that's not taking into account that it absolutely WAS that sudden for many people outside the US.

    • @soumyadeepmondal6130
      @soumyadeepmondal6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This
      But then there are some haters who are all like ATLA was all inspired by Eastern countries but in LOK they just westernised everything and ruined the show. Like Wtf? Those people should get some history lessons before talking shit about the writers

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a mixture of New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and various places in early 20th century British India I would say. The arena building is obviously inspired by the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and the city hall resembles several buildings in both colonial Delhi and Bombay.

    I think Bolin and Mako are an interesting example of how things have changed in the world of Avatar. They're brothers with the same parents but since one of their parents was from the Fire Nation Mako is a fire bender and since the other parent was from the Earth Kingdom Bolin is an earth bender. I'm sure things like that already happened in their world but the existence of Republic City must have made it much more common. I've seen a lot of reactors become confused by it and think that maybe Mako and Bolin aren't really related and just call themselves brothers, when to me it was obvious from the start that they were being literal since the characters' designs evidently tried to both make them look sufficiently enough alike and different at the same time, so that the audience could tell they were related but also always knew which one was which even from afar or while wearing concealing clothes like their Pro Bending uniforms.

    I like how Korra and Aang are so similar in such different ways. Aangs mischief was usually caused by him being super easy going and at peace, while Korra is mischievous and independent as well, but for like the opposite reasons.

    So for the music, I'm just gonna copy and paste what's in the Avatar wiki page because it's interesting to me: "The soundtrack has been described as jazz, but as if it were stylized in 1920s-era China. Its tone has been described as being more mature and unique from the soundtrack of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Track Team wanted a more in-depth exploration of instruments and as a result, the music is a little more sparse in the number of instruments playing at once. The new soundtrack takes advantage of Eastern and Western live instruments, digital sound design, and Chinese instrumentalist Wang Hong, who is proficient in over twenty ethnic instruments."
    Jazz in general is a hit or miss for me lol, but my boyfriend loves jazz that gets crazy so to each their own.

    Korra is more like Zuko, more rash and impulsive like his younger self. Someone else in the series carries more of Aang’s legacy in my opinion.
    FYI, unrelated but the instrument they use a lot in korra is the erhu, the Chinese violin.

  • @khyrinj9950

    I’d say the reason why the world seems so drastically advanced is because it takes places in Republic City which is the peak of industrialization due to it comprising of people from all nations. With that people can combine their knowledge and talents to accomplish much more than they could before! No spoilers, but later on in the show you’ll see the ways in which other areas of the world have or have not advanced after the events of ATLA.

  • @NotMakada

  • @chitoge7816

    Oh korra is very different than aang. Complete opposite of him.
    Korra's most issues stemmed from her not having any freedom. That made her less spiritual. Air is the element of freedom like tenzin and uncle iroh once said. But she had none of it. She was in the compound for 13 years where she wouldn't be out of the guards eyes. And with tenzin it was even less. He wouldn't even let her leave the island. She didn't have the luxury to have any amount of fun at all. Being impatient, head on only makes this even harder. But she took one step so far, she learned how to move like an airbender.
    You guys are right, a teacher has to meet their student halfway.
    "A student is only as good as their teacher." You guys literally quoted a season 3 dialogue here.

    The amount of technological/architectural change in the 70 years between shows is similar to that amount of time in our world too. Especially when the show explores more outside the city in later seasons. Plus, construction for them would be much easier with benders, especially earth/metalbenders being less reliant on machinery.

    I definitely think the creators made a deliberate choice to make Korra basically the exact opposite of Aang personality-wise, because it was inevitable that any avatar character they made was going to be compared to Aang because he was such a beloved character. I personally think it was a smart move, it makes her feel like her own unique character!

    Jazz was a big thing in some Shanghai clubs in the 1920s-30s as a result of colonialization and western embassies coming, so some of the soundscapes reflect that western influence on Chinese culture/music

    Aang is definitely more likeable, Korra is definitely more relatable. Aand is more what we aspire to be whilst Korra is more who most of us would actually be, imo. Love em both, and Korra definitely gets unnecessary hate. Aang is still my favorite, however that doesn't mean that Korra is a bad character and I'd argue she's actually a GREAT character(specially because of how unlikable she was in the beginning and the beautiful/painful journey that made her who she was. S4 Korra is entirely different from S1 Korra and that's the point. Aang just had the benefit of being a likeable goofball starting out whilst Korra started out a bit too abrasive for some people but the journey is definitely worth it.)

    Republic city is its own thing. Yeah you may find 1 or 2 cities close to how things are here but not everything im this world is like republic city. Republic city came about cus of the displaced fire nation n earth kingdom citizens that that mixed during the 100 year war. They had kids with each other n not everyone there was stricken earth or fire any more. When aang n zuko ended the war, they went there and conflict started n ended up having an agreement with the earth king to give that land over the the people there and then water benders moved in and thats how republic city came about.

      Ethnically speaking republic city is the only place in the world as a melting pot. In terms or tech, it is the place currently that surpasses all the 4 other nations.
